Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Posible bug in built-in MP3 decoder - please verify
For the record, my carefully ripped MP3 files sound awesome on the SB, I have not encountered the described issue and kind of doubt I would encounter a scenario like that. Most people, upon playing good burn-in and test CDs (such as Sheffleid Labs) discover that their systems have frequency areas that are non-linear, and sometimes even extremely good speakers show borderline resonance during a slow sweep. So while at this point it seems established the SB is not entirely linear in its frequency response, I wonder if it's really such a scandal given its marginal significance and the fact the rest of the music reproduction chain is bound to also show occasional non-linear response. -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40409 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Hi EricM, hi Nonreality, @Eric: thanks for mentioning other DAC candidates, I've read about them but I'm not willing to spend the necessary 1000s. Then I'd rather go with the Transporter. Most of my music is in MP3 ~200kbps VBR at the moment and I have never heard these artefacts in normal listening. They are quite distinctive when you can hear them, but I never have heard them. I'm guessing that if you listened to a lot of classical music with very quiet but not silent sections then you would have more chance of hearing it in real life, but you'd have to have a much quieter amp than mine for it to be noticable. I have the duet receiver and found the sound to be acceptable using the built in DAC but nowhere near as good as that of my 8 year old cambridge audio cd player. After much debate between getting either the benchmark, ps audio or for something completely different, the cambridge audio 840c cd player (it has 2 digital inputs so you can use it as a DAC), I went for the Cambridge. Now, I haven't heard the others, but I can tell you that using the Cambridge Audio is a huge improvement over the built in DAC of the duet. More detail, more control, less noise. The list goes on. Well I had to wind my system up gain 99 (out of 100) to hear the -75dB one...at which point I could hear what was left of the music and the artefacts. But I'm running the system so loud (with over 500 watts of active amplification) that normal music would be at the pain barrier!. Anyway - I stand by my point. In normal usage i can't see how this would ever get heard. How did you manage to hear it? I can only imagine you were listening on headphones with the gain wide open to a track recorded at a very low level? It would be easy to dismiss your story as hyperbole but I believe you. Sources shouldn't sound that different but sometimes they do have a different character to the sound. When that happens the difference can sometimes be in quantity i.e. frequency response rather than quality and yet then it is easy for the difference to be misconstrued as better quality (especially in the context of a particular rest-of-system which necessarily has its own balance). Could your experience fall into that category, given especially that the listener is on a different floor? Actually there's an old studio trick. Sometime when you've sat listening to a mix next to the nearfields for hours you get a bit...jaded - and you kind of lose the plot in terms of eq, balance etc etc. However, leaving the studio for a break and then returning a while later while the track is still playing, from the hallway outside you can often hear exactly what is wrong with the track (eg drums too loud, vocal eq wrong). It's like you reboot that aural memory part of your brain...and the odd sound from outside is enough to cause that reboot... -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1 system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Kimber Chord cables Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48792 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Hence the shield is not grounded and is therefore useless. And for that much money, one would think that the RJ45 would have both an accidental release protector and an anti-snag protector. Denon really took the cheap route! One last point, IT'S DIGITAL, the cable can have no influence over any of the audio whatsoever! Because there is no audio, its all ones and zeros! Are they claiming that their Zeros and Ones are bigger and fuller with this cable. Oh I get it, with this cable there are less packet collisions so the music sounds better. Yeah, right! What a load of crap! I can only hope nobody is foolish enough to ever buy one. Then again, I think I will wait until none of them sell and get one for $9.95 in the blow-out cable bin at Best Buy. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is there a way to eek out a little more detail...
Hi Howard, I would be very interested in what you finally decide on. Comparing my SB3 analog out with my Apollo CD player, the SB3 seems a little less 3-dimensional. I love the convenience of the SB3, but I don't want to give up any sound quality. I'm a little hesitant in buying a DAC without hearing it first. The only one I auditioned so far was a used Mark Levinson 36s. It sounded weak in the mid-range and upper bass. Not as warm as the Apollo. So, the search is still on. I like to ask the question, but I need the proof before I spend the $$. Tis why I don't have a Transport. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on possible set-ups
I thinking of installing the following and would really appreciate feedback on these set-ups: 1) Great room This install is really for background music / listening to the radio with breakfast. The room is already pre-wired for in-ceiling speakers 4 X Martin-Logan Helos 100 Pioneer VSX-918V-K Receiver Duet 2) Headphone set-up I already have a pair of AKG K701 headphones. So was thinking about one of the following combinations: a)headphone amp such as an HeadRoom Ultra Micro plus a Transport b)Benchmark DAC plus Duet c)CI Audio headphone amp (VHP 2) plus DAC (VDA 2) plus Duet Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. The OP keeps ignoring the fact that: the issue is buried in the noisefloor of most systems there is no evidence that anyone else has ever noticed the issue there is a simple workaround (convert mp3 to flac) that fixes the problem. What is the replaygain problem? Actually I wasn't talking about you in that post. I would hate for one program to make me have to convert all my mp3's to flac, it's simple but a hassle. But like you said it doesn't affect me. The replay gain problem is if you happen to have had Itunes do it's soundcheck (which I was using for my 2 Ipods) then for some unknown reason they decided that the sb should add track gain and soundcheck together. So if you have a track replaygain of -8dB's it will now be somewhere around -16 dBs. Gets pretty quiet if your listening to various tracks with smartgain going. The fix is to not use any track gain or delete all the soundcheck tags. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40409 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
