Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Posible bug in built-in MP3 decoder - please verify

2008-06-13 Thread pablolie

For the record, my carefully ripped MP3 files sound awesome on the SB, I
have not encountered the described issue and kind of doubt I would
encounter a scenario like that.

Most people, upon playing good burn-in and test CDs (such as Sheffleid
Labs) discover that their systems have frequency areas that are
non-linear, and sometimes even extremely good speakers show borderline
resonance during a slow sweep.

So while at this point it seems established the SB is not entirely
linear in its frequency response, I wonder if it's really such a
scandal given its marginal significance and the fact the rest of the
music reproduction chain is bound to also show occasional non-linear
response.

@Eric:
thanks for mentioning other DAC candidates, I've read about them but
I'm not willing to spend the necessary 1000€s. Then I'd rather go with

The RME-DAC was just a test to what extend a midprice external DAC can
contribute to the sound.

Maybe you're right. Maybe I'm just adding more and more devices to take

Transcoding workaround(mp3 decoding in full 24-bit,):

mp3 flc * *
[madplay] --output=wave:- --replay-gain=audiophile --attenuate=-0
--very-quiet --bit-depth=24 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent

normal listening levels I can't hear the -75dB track at all above the
normal noise from my amp and I can barely hear the -45dB track let
 alone the artefacts.

Most of my music is in MP3 ~200kbps VBR at the moment and I have never
heard these artefacts in normal listening. They are quite distinctive
when you can hear them, but I never have heard them.

I'm guessing that if you listened to a lot of classical music with very
quiet but not silent sections then you would have more chance of hearing
it in real life, but you'd have to have a much quieter amp than mine for

I have the duet receiver and found the sound to be acceptable using the
built in DAC but nowhere near as good as that of my 8 year old
cambridge audio cd player.

After much debate between getting either the benchmark, ps audio or for
something completely different, the cambridge audio 840c cd player (it
has 2 digital inputs so you can use it as a DAC), I went for the
Cambridge.

Now, I haven't heard the others, but I can tell you that using the
Cambridge Audio is a huge improvement over the built in DAC of the
duet. More detail, more control, less noise. The list goes on. My
wife could hear the difference when she was one floor away in the
house. There simply is no comparison.

one...at which point I could hear what was left of the music and the
artefacts. But I'm running the system so loud (with over 500 watts of
active amplification) that normal music would be at the pain barrier!.

Anyway - I stand by my point. In normal usage i can't see how this
would ever get heard. How did you manage to hear it?

I can only imagine you were listening on headphones with the gain wide
open to a track recorded at a very low level?

Anyway as I keep saying, I converted the files to FLAC (using Switch
Plus) and the artefacts disappeared.

So there is a perfect workaround for the one file out of 100,000 that

It would be easy to dismiss your story as hyperbole but I believe you.

Sources shouldn't sound that different but sometimes they do have a
different character to the sound. When that happens the difference can
sometimes be in quantity i.e. frequency response rather than
quality and yet then it is easy for the difference to be misconstrued
as better quality (especially in the context of a particular
rest-of-system which necessarily has its own balance).

Could your experience fall into that category, given especially that
the listener is on a different floor? Perhaps more or less bass or
treble (for example) would be audible...but not, surely, sound quality
itself.

Going further, perhaps there are no major differences and pyschology
alone is causing you to hear a difference, given especially that the
listener is on a different floor.

Actually there's an old studio trick. Sometime when you've sat listening
to a mix next to the nearfields for hours you get a bit...jaded - and
you kind of lose the plot in terms of eq, balance etc etc. However,
leaving the studio for a break and then returning a while later while
the track is still playing, from the hallway outside you can often hear
exactly what is wrong with the track (eg drums too loud, vocal eq
wrong).
It's like you reboot that aural memory part of your brain...and the odd
sound from outside is enough to cause that reboot...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Posible bug in built-in MP3 decoder - please verify

2008-06-13 Thread sikahr

First, about the workaround, there are no need for conversion,
transcoding workaround works superb.

Second, You didn't say anything about first file (-45db).

Please listen additional file:
http://www.driveway.com/v8x5g1b3p9

this is -60db file, it maybe gives best picture because music and
artefacts are about same level.

My point is:
if noise of about -60 db mixed with music is not important, then I
agree with You. But I think this is important and I clearly can hear
this on my system on audiophile recordings as additional noise which
disappeare when I use trancoding.

The -45dB file was...louder.

Maybe I'm missing something here.

Can you post the mp3 fragment without any normalisation or changes in
level? so I can hear it exactly as it would be ripped?

Unfortunatrelly, I don't have original rip (six months passed), but I
have wav (normalised to -45db) decoded from mp3 on PC. Compare this wav

I have not handled this cable and the pictures are not very detailed,
but from the pictures it does appear that the shield cable is doing
anything because the RJ45 does not have a metal incased head. Hence the
shield is not grounded and is therefore useless.

And for that much money, one would think that the RJ45 would have both
an accidental release protector and an anti-snag protector. Denon
really took the cheap route!

One last point, IT'S DIGITAL, the cable can have no influence over any
of the audio whatsoever! Because there is no audio, it’s all ones and
zeros! Are they claiming that their Zeros and Ones are bigger and
fuller with this cable. Oh I get it, with this cable there are less
packet collisions so the music sounds better. Yeah, right!

What a load of crap! I can only hope nobody is foolish enough to ever
buy one. Then again, I think I will wait until none of them sell and
get one for $9.95 in the blow-out cable bin at Best Buy. The cable
would look pretty between my Linksys Router and Transporter since my
router is blue.

Hi Howard,

I would be very interested in what you finally decide on. Comparing my
SB3 analog out with my Apollo CD player, the SB3 seems a little less
3-dimensional. I love the convenience of the SB3, but I don't want to
give up any sound quality. I'm a little hesitant in buying a DAC
without hearing it first. The only one I auditioned so far was a used
Mark Levinson 36s. It sounded weak in the mid-range and upper bass. Not
as warm as the Apollo. So, the search is still on.

He he, we'll see. I like to ask the question, but I need the proof
before I spend the $$. Tis why I don't have a Transport. When I
bought my stereo there were several places around here that would allow
you to audition in your home. I guess the 30 day trial is the same
thing, but I feel bad if I take a new unit for trial.

How about sharing that popcorn? :-)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on possible set-ups

2008-06-13 Thread nicholasg

I thinking of installing the following and would really appreciate
feedback on these set-ups:

1) Great room

This install is really for background music / listening to the radio
with breakfast. The room is already pre-wired for in-ceiling speakers

4 X Martin-Logan Helos 100
Pioneer VSX-918V-K Receiver
Duet

2) Headphone set-up

I already have a pair of AKG K701 headphones. So was thinking about one
of the following combinations:

a)headphone amp such as an HeadRoom Ultra Micro plus a Transport

b)Benchmark DAC plus Duet

c)CI Audio headphone amp (VHP 2) plus DAC (VDA 2) plus Duet

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nicholas

 problem.

 What is the replaygain problem?
Actually I wasn't talking about you in that post. I would hate for one
program to make me have to convert all my mp3's to flac, it's simple but
a hassle. But like you said it doesn't affect me. The replay gain
problem is if you happen to have had Itunes do it's soundcheck (which I
was using for my 2 Ipods) then for some unknown reason they decided that
the sb should add track gain and soundcheck together. So if you have a
track replaygain of -8dB's it will now be somewhere around -16 dBs.
Gets pretty quiet if your listening to various tracks with smartgain
going. The fix is to not use any track gain or delete all the
soundcheck tags.

The Benchmark is a great DAC and can more than drive headphones. I have
one, altho I've not used it since I got my Transporter.

You may want to check out the http://www.headamp.com/ Pico
I think its really in production, but the web page says pre orders
I know the engineer who designed it, and its first rate, worthy of

No one has to convert any files from MP3 to FLAC to work around it, as
long as their server has enough CPU power to transcode their MP3s to
FLACs on the fly.
