Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] xlr pinout?

2008-06-14 Thread ratso

lots of people have cured ground loops with single ended xlr (and many
haven't either!). according to jensen transformers it may have to do
with the construction of the cable and they say a properly constructed
cable can have a pretty dramatic effect on hum (see fig. 2.1)

http://www.jensentransformers.com/an/an003.pdf

anyways it's a cheap fix if it works which is why i want to try it. as
for single ended vs. fully balanced i'm not even going to touch that
controversy.

Nice find. He can improve your sound quality over the phone lines. Even
if your system is turned off. It the Machina Dynamica's Teleportation

Using an XLR to RCA cable is not going to address that at all.
Balanced all the way may, but RCA is unbalenced, and can lead to ground
loops.

I just checked the usual documentation and don't see the answer to the
only important question for XLR, is pin 2 hot? So we'll have to have
Sean or someone more knowledgeable than me answer your specific question.

But why do a XLR to RCA conversion when there are RCA connectors right
there to use?

You lose the benefit of being balanced when you change to RCA.

The XLR output on the transporter is the common industry standard.
Unless there is something funky about the balanced input on your
pre-amp you shouldn't need anything special.

Edit: Oh, wait, the BC-21 you list in your sig doesn't have balanced.
You won't get anything fixed by using the XLR outputs on the TP.

2008-06-14 Thread alexdemaet

Please note that my HeadRoom Balanced Home has a built-in dac (I don't
know about the quality of the dac but I believe it's quite a good dac).

Thank you for your advice. Since the Transporter is a bit more
expensive.
I would try to ask some advice about "Emu 1212m pci" sound card
http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=505&subcategory=491&product=9872&nav=features
and
"Lynx L22" sound card http://lynxtwo.com/lynxl22.html .
I believe I would be able to connect the Lynx L22 to my HeadRoom
Balanced amp via XLR (balanced). I am not sure if that would be
possible with the Emu 1212m (though I can read it has balanced outputs
- not XLR but RCA I believe).

No need to upgrade, if you want XLR, just get a Transporter, as easy as
that!
by the way, SB3 means "squeeze box 3" the number 3 refers to the
version, which is the latest. an SB3 or Duet dont give you the balanced
option...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does the Transporter outperform SACD (2ch)?

2008-06-14 Thread jt25741

I think everything is converted to basically single bit DSDish quasi
Delta-Sigma format by the AKM and just about any other non-R2R ladder
based DAC on the market these days. This seems to be the modern
approach. D/A conversion of such 1 bit non PCM streams has some
linearity advantages over the older and sometimes preferred approaches
of the earlier DACs (venerable BB PCM1704 and other much more expensive
chips). There are trade-offs as well. Numerous posts have been on
this subject to learn much more. So when we listen to PCM sources
through most modern chips, we are really listening through a streaming
quai 1-bit conversion anyways through the SB and TP.

Lots of companies have done this over time. The business school term is
cash cow. They were making 20% markup on stuff, on this they make 3000%
markup. Quarterly numbers look great, managers get bonuses, and leave.
