darren: unfortunately polority was set to normal. Changing it to
inverted didn't change anything either.

agentsmith: I did the factory reset and no change.

worth a try though.

thanks for your input.

Suggest you try to see if the audio signal is fine. Try outputting to a
DAC if you have one. Or try Balanced output Vs RCA or vice versa.

I forgot, have you tried different SqueezeCenter versions?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Direct Comparison TP vs SB3 - DAC

2009-06-01 Thread Rodney_Gold

I have a Graham Slee solo headphone amp , driving a set of Senheisser
650's.
The headphone amp has 2 inputs and they are switchable. I want to
compare the DAC in the SB3 and TP ...
Are both Analiog outputs the same in terms of loudness...to me on
initial listening it sounds that the TP at full output is louder than
the SB...??
I have both players set to max vol and am using the same interconnect
to both?

 From the website:

Transporter:

Balanced Analog Outputs

 * Connectors: XLR gold-plated
 * Level: 3Vrms (8.5Vpp)
 * Impedance: 100 Ohms
 * Attenuation: Fixed -0dB

Unbalanced Analog Outputs

 * Connectors: RCA gold-plated
 * Level: 2Vrms (5.7Vpp)
 * Impedance 100 Ohm (at -0dB)
 * Attenuation: Selectable -0, -10, -20, -30dB

SB3:

Analog RCA outputs

 * High fidelity Burr-Brown™ 24-bit DAC
 * Two dedicated linear power regulators for DAC and line-out stages
 * Full 6.0Vpp line-level signals
 * Signal-to-noise ratio: over 100dB
 * Total harmonic distortion (THD+N): less than -93.5dB (0.002%)

So, if you're using unbalanced out on the Transporter, then it is
slightly quieter than the SB3 (5.7Vpp vs. 6.0Vpp).

It was this kind of stuff which prompted me to start the thread asking
if Slimserver is bit perfect. If you have bit perfect software, you
can't get any better, if it's free, then all the better. And yes, I
think this another instance of an audiophile company attempting to
package something which is already perfect and free in another wrapping
and sell it at a stupifying price as a dramatic improvement. A lot of
audiophile gear made sense when we were in an analogue world and a $100
k turntable could indeed offer superior isolation, speed regulation, and
tracking of recordings when even the minutest traces of such things were
audible, but in a digital world? Not so much, if at all...

My TP is connected to my Pre-amp using the XLR Balanced outs. If I
didn't also use the system for other sources and Home Theater, I am sure
I would be directly connected. The reason I know is that I take the time
to do that on occasion. Transporter to 1.5M XLR to Ayre MX-R to
Vandersteen Quatro Speakers sounds very good. Hard to go wrong using the
minimum possible components!

Hence my calling it smoke and mirrors, albeit some rather expensive
and, dare I say, way over priced mirrors with cute multi-colored smoke.
Oh no, wait, they're using a playback engine that was used to master
about 70% of the CDs you own. But about 70% of most CDs sound like
garbage, so why would anyone want that playback engine?

I had thought about this, but then I read an interview with someone (who
I think was one of the original design people) state that the best sound
possible from TP is when it's at 0db. Could we mortals hear the
difference? Who knows .. ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help - distorted sounds!

2009-06-01 Thread jono338

Hi Agentsmith,

I am using balanced ... it's the only option as the unbalanced is
completely horrible. I mean you can barely hear the music through the
all the static.

The Balanced is much better, but produces distortion when the TP is set
to 0db that is particularly noticeable with certain music, especially
solo piano.

As to trying a previous version of SC ... shouldn't it work properly
with the current version like, I presume, everyone else's TP? What could
be in the current version that breaks (at least one) TP?

I'm currently communicating with the seller to do an exchange under
warrantee, and I'll have to wear the freight.

The frustration is not so much about the extra expense, but rather
about the weeks and weeks I'm going to be without music. And I still
haven't heard what everyone claims about the quality of the sound that
the TP produces. G.
