I did enough LP/digital comparison toward the beginning of my ongoing
conversion project to satisfy myself that I was getting the results I
was after.

I tried a couple of different devices and settled on the M-Audio card.
Other people have obviously chosen differently. I also tried different
sample rates and found I was happy with the standard CD quality. I find
the vast majority of LPs have their own inherent limitations and I just
didn't find I was getting anything from the higher sampling rates that
justified the extra file size. Again, that is one of those points where
people need to reach their own conclusion.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter volume-control digital input

2010-04-04 Thread NewBuyer

To suggest the obvious: If you're listening at around half-volume level
on the Transporter, you might also consider getting an amp with much
less gain/power than your current 200W/ch one. More power isn't always
better! :)

Or even as a compromise, consider trying an amp like the Parasound A23
- you still probably won't need much of its power, but the A23 has XLR
inputs with level controls on the back of the amp to let you get the
right amount of attenuation. It also has an auto-on (signal sense)
feature that would work great with the Transporter...

When playing SACD discs, my Sony S9000ES mutes its digital outs.
I don't know what happens if one chooses the Redbook layer playback for

I submitted this as a bug and got a simple response that "This is not a
bug with the bug tracking system, so I'm changing the 'product'".

I am not sure what that means. I wrote back to ask whether they

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thoughts on Parasound Halo amp/preamp potential purchase

2010-04-04 Thread Ron Stewart

I have the P3 preamp, and I'm very happy with it. I'm feeding it with an
SB3 and Lavry DA10 DAC (via balanced connections) and it's driving an
NAD C272 amp.

In my case, I greatly preferred the P3 to two passives I tried: the
"preamp" section of a Creek 4330SE integrated, and the FT Audio LW1.
The NAD amp has a lowish input impedance, and that my explain why the
passives didn't work well for me.

I didn't compare it to other active preamps. When I dropped the P3 into
my system, I was satisfied, and I stopped looking.

I bought my P3 from Audio Advisor, and it's a refurbished unit. I don't
remember the exact amount, but that saved me a lot of money. It looks
like a new unit, and it's worked flawlessly for me.

There is also another TP/Naim user on these forums, that uses a DIN-RCA

If you peak around the n-forum, this is/was discussed regularly. And

Petter, you're current setup is fine.

That said, I did post exactly this question a while back on the
n-forum. The consensus seemed to be that a RCA-DIN cable could be
better - or at least as good as RCA-RCA. Why, is really beyond me.
Something about getting some of the properties (of DIN) that Naim uses
this type of connection for in the first place So I now use a Chord
Chameleon RCA-DIN cable that my dealer made for me.

Note that at the time I had both kinds of cables already lying around,
so it was simply a free choice. This was also reflected in my post on
the n-forum..

I do not compare my rips to CDs, I just do it and like what I get.

What was your ADC? Which resolution did you use to rip LPs? 96/24?

That's true.
I compared my A21 head to head to Octave and VAC, costing ~ 7000-8000$,
and Parasound came clear winner - detailed, quiet, controlled and more
dimensional bass.. First 10W are pure Class A (Simaudio some $ amps
have mere 5W)

I am driving with it speakers costing 22,000$, and the result is
absolutely fabulous.

Yes, I did the setup again to make sure the ethernet-connection is the
active one. I'll try the reset next, as the manual states that wireless

Though my turntable system is now setup only for transcription, in the
past I've had it in my main system and it wasn't too hard to use the
preamp input control to switch back and forth from the digital copy to
the LP. I was satisfied.

In fact, I was more than satisfied, as a completely pure LP (in terms

Audition's pop removal improved my listening experience.

As far as "resolution, separation and clarity" any difference for me
was more ephemeral. Perceived differences were so small that which I
preferred could change with my mood.

Perhaps I'm just displaying my rube ignorance of true audiophileness,

Other music sales are not down. According to the latest RIAA statistics
(on their web site) CDs are down about 25%, but download sales are up
27% for singles and 34% for albums. And those numbers make LP sales
look like a small ink drop on a sheet of white paper.

Keep in mind that the nature of music distribution has changed
constantly over the years. From 1880 until the 1940s, the primary
source of income for music companies was sheet music. 78 records didn't
break through that until their lifespan was almost over.

I have no doubt that the nature of the market will continue to change.

However, one has to be careful not to linearly extrapolate the current
growth rate of anything. Just because LPs have a current growth spurt
doesn't mean it will continue at that rate. That said, LP lovers should
enjoy their current moment in the sun.

Though you may think that poor sounding CDs outnumber poor sounding LPs
(and with some of the LPs I've encountered I'm not sure I agree), the
bigger point is that you acknowledge that some CDs do sound very good.

Right there you have the proof that it can be done. Good sounding CDs
have been made and they can be made anytime people at the record
company make quality a priority.

Bad sounding CDs are just like the hot teenage clothing fashion of the
moment. We may scratch our heads wondering what they're thinking, but
the clothing manufacturers make clothing in that style because they can
sell a ton of it.

Music is the same way. CDs don't have to sound hot, compressed and
aggressive. They sound that way because someone intentionally set out
to achieve that sound.

I can't speak as to the pre-amp, but the amp is some of the best money
spent under the $5000 and sometimes $10,000 comparable amps. It is a
high current amp with very stable operation making it able to drive

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Disabling Transporter wireless

2010-04-04 Thread jusisan

Hi everyone,

After connecting my Transporter with ethernet instead of wireless I
found a strange issue. Even tough the wired is connected and the unit
working fine, I still see it's connected (per the router's
admin-interface) via wireless as well. The signal's weak though, as the
antennas have been removed.

The reason I'm trying to disable wireless is to to lose every g-type
wireless-device from my network, leaving my two routers communicating
via the faster n-network most of the time. The network drops it's speed
whenever g-type devices are connected, and hence I'd like to disable the
Transporter's wireless for the time being.

I'm unable to find a way to do this, however. Does anybody know how
this is done, and is it possible?

Regards,

/jussi
