Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] S-Booster

2011-01-17 Thread c3p0

Hi,
at the low cost end a Smps can out perform a linear Psu. Linear isn't
always better, the Smps with the Touch is very good. A lot of Hi end
Hifi manufacturers are using Smps Inc Linn. So don't write Smps off, a
bit of specification Research will find you one at low cost.

I agree with you that there is a point where spending money on Cables
and Psu's becomes pointless when your Speakers / Amp aren't good enough
to resolve differences. Luckily I haven't reached that point yet but if
your speakers are towards the lower cost end and are physically smaller
you will hit that resolution limit sooner. I know if I had a few grand
extra to spend on hifi, it would be on Speakers as that would have the
greater sonic impact than spending it on an Amp, or cable.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is a Transporter SE?

2011-01-17 Thread Mnyb

Stock clearance it is ?

Logitech EU does not know what to do with it :) I've got mail from
them.

"The Transporter SE is not available in Europe, and warranty would
officially be limited to US customers, as we would have no way to RMA"

"In regards to the faulty products after their warranty period,
unfortunately we do not have a fixing policy for the faulty devices,
but we will still try and help you to the best possible extent that
will be available in regards to the actual case."

That is more or less the expected answer so no mystery.

I forgot to return the obvious follow up Q about spare parts ?
Logitech EU would not know as they don't plan to have the product.

Not many brands repair their own stuff , but your friendly neighborhood
electronics repair shop do if they can get can get spares.
Most components are standard issue stuff that you can find in a catalog
somewhere, but it's probably good style to offer specially made
components as spares and complete boards .

So if the aluminum knob is missing and logi don't want to order
2000pc's I supose a handy person could fit another one or cnc mill one.

I have one of the first production Transporters. I was not in the beta
program.

I played with the knob the first days I had it. Its a cool technical
tour-de-force, dynamically programmable force feedback.

I've never touched the knob in the years since.

More likely explanations are:

a) The price was lowered significantly because of the loss of front
panel functionality.

b) It's a short-lived clearance item just to sell some leftover
components.

It's also a product that is a number of years old and whose market has
been significantly reduced by the Touch's 24/96 capability and the rave
reviews that it's received for sound quality. Probably would be
difficult to sell any more for $2k even if they had knobs.

> What about functionality of the front panel buttons ?

>From Andy's answer above, they're still there and they still function.
Many of them have no use without having the knob to scroll through
menus, though.

(I never use the knob either. I was just playing with it and the front
panel buttons to see what they do and completely locked up the
Transporter. I suspect that the front panel functionality hasn't gotten
a lot of use or testing over the years.)

What about functionality of the front panel buttons ?

The second definition is always most important, especially when your

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is a Transporter SE?

2011-01-17 Thread Claudius

Thanks for the info. I saw the special offer expiring today for the
Squeezebox SE for $1199.

Unfortunately after years of squeezebox classics, boombox and a
disaster with the duet, I wanted to try the direct manual control of
the magical knob they touted and talked about for years.

I applaud Logitech for trying to deliver technology that everyone loves
without having the parts, personally I am afraid I think the big round
flat plug in place of the knob looks a little gimmicky and odd for a
beautiful unit priced over $1000. Somehow I think I would look at that
plug and wish. That's not to say some may be content without the knob
and never ever use it. I think it would be the plug that bothered me.
And remote controls don't last forever either.

Guess I'll pass on the special. Thanks though...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] S-Booster

2011-01-17 Thread evdplancke

Thanks for the advice, but I am not sure to understand your logic: on
one hand, you are using a low cost SMPS for your V-DAC allthough I
would expect this type of PSU being in every aspects worse than a
linear PSU. On the other hand, you are using a power plant premier of
about 2k€... for sure I believe for that cost you will have a huge
impact on quality!

Personally, I am looking for a budget solution, since my budget is
quite limited. I have tried a linear PSU of 25€ but did not notice any
audible difference between analog and digital outputs of my SBT. Maybe
the system behind my V-DAC is not discriminant enough: ampli NAD C315
and pretty old PEL AT-1 speakers of 1993. I am using a low cost toslink
cable that may also be a weakness.

Other suggestions for improvement? What about system grounding? I
suspect this may also have an impact.

2) I have done the DTS and HDCD tests (and other tests) that prove
"bit-perfect" streams.

3) The SBS bitrate display is meaningless because of transcoding and/or
native handling. It only ever worked for fixed rate streams such as MP3
CBR or PCM. It doesn't have any meaning for FLAC. Let me try one last
time: the server reports the bit rate as implied by the file on disk.
It does not report what actually streams to the player because it
doesn't know happens to the file during that process - it doesn't know
if the file passes through lame, sox, etc etc and it doesn't know what
those processes do to the sample rate/bit depth/compression ratios
etc.

PS the "attitude" comes from the fact that you asked a question and got
replies from people who really know what they are talking about, but you
don't believe them? - you even question the developer (Andy Grundman)!!!

of little or no practical value or meaning; purely academic.

(In other words, knowing how to prevent reflections in SPDIF signals is
of no practical value when it's not possible to actually achieve it in
most cases. This was the sense in which I used the word).

Hi,
My Vdac ran very warm (hot) with the supplied wall wart, i measured
output at 19 volts (not good). I changed to a Strontronics low ripple
higher current SMPS, Vdac now cool and sounds better; cost about £10.

I am using a Power Plant Premier to supply my HiFI (Moon i1/cd1 and
Sonus Faber Domus, Touch, Vdac) and this has reduced a lot of anomalies
on my system. Prior to fitting this, i tried swapping cables but
couldn't really here any difference, but after fitting it the
difference to the system wasnt subtle. Everything seemed clearer, louder
at my standard volume setting. swapping cables now become noticable.

I too have been experimenting with Soundchecks Mods and havent come to
a clear conclusion yet as any changes on my system are very subtle. I
believe that because i have a very clean (pure regenerated supply) that
any effect of switching on and off parts of the Touch is much reduced.

I also know that my system is low jitter already. I tried out a Digital
Lens and because I could by-pass it via a click on the remote I was able
to do direct A/B comparison very quickly.
Touch - Vovox cable -Digital lens- Qed Cable(using the jitter meter i
could see that it was already low and not reduced further by the lens).
I also couldn't hear any difference. But when i tried the Vovox directly
between the Touch and the Vdac the change was pronounced. Digital lens
was returned but cable was purchased.

So this brings me to my theory on Soundchecks mods and why its subtle
and almost non existant on some but huge and pronounced on others. I
believe that with a dirty supply the effect of Jitter is increased,
switching off parts of the touch reduce the electrical pathways and
interference by dirty power, this will reduce jitter and other
interferences. If,like me, you have a regenerated clean sinewave power
supply (filtering and going linear is not enough) it will reduce
spurious emissions. If you have a jitter sensitive system of Dac and
cable then any reduction in jitter will be noticable. However if your
system is already Low Jitter and your cable and Dac are Jitter robust
the effect will be very slight to not noticable. This may help explain
and reduce the arguments about Soundchecks mods especially in regard to
On board/ off board Flac to PCM conversion (theory says there should be
no difference). To test my theory (easy) we need someone who notices
Soundchecks mods making a big difference to measure the Jitter before
and after (that's difficult and expensive)
