I did enable SSH in the Advanced Touch menu. I've gone through those

I'm using WinSCP version 4.3.4. I get the 2 error messages you mention
but then WinSCP starts the connection and works fine.

If it still won't work you might want to see if there are firewall

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks dynaudiorules for this very interesting mod.

Interesting observations. I'd think that it would depend on one's
particular configuration. For example, I'm not experiencing any
fatiguing at 53. The sound is gorgeous, analog-like, and not harsh at
all, while remaining very laser-sharp at the same time.

I'm listening through planar speakers (Magnepan, or Maggies), so maybe
that explains it. My Maggies are very open and natural sounding to
begin with, and it gets very hard to make them sound harsh and
fatiguing, even with lousy CD players. Any improvements at the source,
such as Dyno's, just make these speakers sound even more gorgeous.

I'll try lower values and will report back...

*Handle is subjective. FLAC 5.1 ignores all channels except FL and FR.
WMA Lossless 5.1 mixes all the other channels into FL and FR, but

It really doesn't handle them at all in any sense that requires the

I completely agree with mcr on that point.

I played around quite a bit last night with values between 40 and 59.
Below 44 sounded a bit muted/muffled/bassy and above 48 got a bit
shrill/scratchy on the treble---particularly heard w/female voices.
So, I've now got it set at 47---obviously trying to get the best of

There is no one best setting for everyone. It's all system dependent,
meaning your amp, speakers, your cables, your room, your ears :)

Still, I think it'd be hard to imagine any kind of system, other than a
very uneven and bright sounding one, where not at least one of the
priority changes improves the sound and clarity.

IMO, this mod is a very useful mod that allows users to fine-tune their
system. At the same time, can this be considered as a non-audiophile
modification, similar to using the treble button as it modifies the
sound output from the touch than merely reproducing the recording.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Squeezebox Touch Mod

2011-08-15 Thread JohnSwenson

I got this up and running on my main system this weekend, I set spdif to
59 and was shocked, it was so harsh, and the bass seemed to almost
disappear. I thought I had broken the DAC.

Then I set it back down to 44 and the bass was back and the harshness
went away. I was not prepared for the amount of change this caused.

44 is an interesting number because the jive-alsa thread has a default
priority of 45. So by setting spdif to 45 or above you are now putting
it at a higher priority than the jive_alsa thread, which is what
actually might be causing the sound changes. It might be an interesting
test to try running jive_alsa at a higher priority (say 55) and then try
running s/pdif in the 50 to 60 range.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0

2011-08-15 Thread JohnSwenson

Whats going on here is that in the Touch are two DACs, one connected to
the RCA jacks (the hi-fi DAC) and one connected to the internal
speaker which produces the bleeps and blurps ect, (the effects DAC).
Normally there is a separate jive-alsa process just for the effects
channel, this is a rather big waste of resources and interrupts etc, so
TT2.0 disables that separate process, but that means there is no place
for the effects noises to go, so they wind up getting routed to the
main system along with the music. The problem is that the effects
noises are at a lower sample rate so when they get played on the main
channel they cause all kinds of crackling etc because they are at a
different sample rate than the music.

As has been mentioned the solution is just to turn off all effect
sounds.

I might be wrong but I found the process id with ps -e which was 704

then executed chrt -f -p 55 704

If you want this in your rcs file then put the new command at the end

If you do it after a clean boot (with an untampered rcs file), I think
the process id may need to be specified as 700

Would appreciate some clarity myself for some John or Dynobot.
