Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] psycho acoustics: the nightmare of listening tests
I remember a user named iPhone doing ADM measurements on the analog out of the old SB3 using stock or linear psu and the output signal was identical in either case. No one done that for Touch but I suspect similar results . Some thinker suspect that audibility of PSU is down to it's interaction with the rest of your hifi if your switcher is disturbing amps or DAC for example ? So it's hard to get universal results here, add many cult designers affection for design principles that makes equipment more susceptible to these kinds of problems that would not bother normal equipment ? OT: I think modding here and there does not accomplish as much, the device must be correctly designed from the ground up improve one detail and you face the next bottleneck, Hence the external DAC route :) I have an 3rd party PSU I bought to my SB3 it fits the Touch too , SB3 in Eu came with a really shoddy PSU , I suspected it did not even conformed to standards ? The late logitech SB3 and Touch comes with an much better switcher ( if you can believe that ). -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best way of getting from SB to speakers
Back to the original poster's question, it would be good if Jaime could tell us a little more about which Tannoy speakers he has, what size room they are being used in, and what type of music he listens to. Classical typically has much greater dynamic range than pop or rock, and given that there is little need to provide huge dynamic headroom to cope with peaks. IMO it is better to optimise the system around the volume level required in the room with the typical programme material to be used. My recommendation for the Rogue Chronus is based on it being a good sonic match for the SBT and Tannoys, as well as being a simple to use solution, but I suggest that the OP listens to a few amps before making a decision on integrated, pre/power or power amp only set ups for his system. Personally I think the SBT analogue outputs sound a little thin and two dimensional compared to my DAC so I think the preamp isn't going to be holding the sound back. Best Bang for buck is integrated Amps , nowadays preamps are not doing much once they had phono section mm and mc tone controls and stuff . Input selector and volume can reside in the amp , you may optimise the amp for this and for modest power this can actually be better ! separate pre and power only becomes necessary these days when it's start to outgrow the box with powerful amps. Box and PSU cost more than one thinks to do. That's very wise, it is usually hard to convince youngsters that you should where earplugs at work etc and you never ever pull them out in a noisy environment. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] speaker placement
12 inches is a lot to move them all at once. But, really, the only one that can answer your question is you. Move the speakers too far apart and you may (I repeat, may) lose imaging---or you may improve it. Most folks use certain tracks---especially ones with a clear center voice---a la Diana Krall, etc.) so that you can relatively easily determine whether a voice that's supposed to be hovering in mid-air/centered between your speakers actually does. I've certainly found that an inch or so will make a definite and noticeable difference in pulling a voice off to one side or another (assuming the listening position is also centered). The other variable here is that not all recordings put the main instrument or voice dead-center, so you have to watch that so you don't precisely and lovingly place your speakers using a recording that's not centered and then have the other 90% of your recordings sound off. Best thing to do, if you can, is start with your listening position at an equal distance from each speaker if possible. There are mathematical computations you can do to set speaker and listening distance separation if you prefer something more empirical. I believe Cardas has a computational method out there on the web somewhere if you search. However, rooms are different and even the mathmatical models may only provide you a starting point. Having a laser measurment device or the cheap alterntive: string (but it's stretchy) helps in order to get some precision. If your chosen starting point isn't satisfactory, move the speakers inward or outward an inch at a time until the voice starts to move off-center and/or you start to feel the soundstage getting constricted. You can also experiment with toeing the speakers in--again in increments. Your particular speakers may have a wide or very narrow band of positioning in which they will project a nice spacious image with a voice remaining centered. Again, only experimentation will tell. Last thing I can say is that it can take a lot of time (and a bit of frustration) to get it right---definitely helps to have a willing partner. I find I get listening fatigue after an hour or two and, if you think you've got it right and aren't 100% convinced, sometimes it helps to wait overnight and come back to it the next morning after you're ears are refreshed. -- rgro Rg System information Main: PS Audio Quintet Vortexbox Teddy Pardo PS, Touch (wired) Toslink Rega DAC LFD LE IV Signature amp VA Mozart Grands REL Acoustics R305.
