Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps
Ok, that must be why my portable radio sounds identical to my main hifi then!!! Personally I tend to go with what my ears tell me but it is based on an intermediate level of electronics knowledge. I don't use spice modelling and I've never chosen anything based on quoted distortion levels. What I can tell you is that there most definitely is an audible difference between cap type and or no cap in the signal path. What's being discussed is attempting to overcome the known short comings of electrolytic caps in the signal path. -- UV101 Touch,Linear Low Noise PSU,2 Regs,2 direct Clocks,Caps.. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps
If you are going to perform surgery on the Touch you are much better off getting rid of or bypassing the output caps all together. The DAC chip already has a circuit which provides a signal that has no DC bias, there is no need for a cap on the output. I really have no idea why there is one in the first place. The only thing I can think of is that the engineer that added the caps thought the DAC had a DC bias on its output since it just uses a single 5V supply. (BTW the DAC chip has a switching DC-DC converter inside to make the negative voltage) Because the cap has its + terminal connected to the DAC chip you want to apply a negative voltage to the other side to properly bias it. 6V should be about right. An easy way to do this is a 6V alkaline lantern battery. Connect the + lead of the battery to GND of the interconnect, then run a resistor from the - terminal to each signal wire. (that's two resistors, one for each channel, the other ends connected to the negative 6V) IF the amp has a film cap (or bipolar electrolytic) on its input, that's all you need. IF the AMP is DC coupled you will need to add a film cap to each signal channel. If you don't know what is on the input of the amp the safest bet is to use the caps as well as the resistors, but if you know the amp already has one, there is no reason to add another. You can play around with the resistor value. I'm going to say somewhere between 10K and 50K. The higher the value the less current will flow through the battery, which means a longer battery life. Higher values have a little more noise so there is a tradeoff here. You can use inexpensive resistors or expensive resistors, that's up to you. If you need the cap, that starts getting a bit more complicated. The bottom end of the range is probably .5uf but you could also go up to several uf depending on the amp input impedance etc. There is also a huge range in price for different caps, from 20 cents to several hundred dollars. Again I am not going to make ANY recommendation on that. Just remember that there is already a cheap electrolytic coupling cap in the chain. I was specifically looking at an article that was analyzing what happens with an unbiased polarized electrolytic while varying the input voltage from .1V RMS to 2V RMS. I don't remember exactly where it is, I can't find it right now. Still confusing, how are you running the network when you get 3000Kps? A lot of factors are in play here. Where is the LMS server located from the Transporter? How far is your wireless router from the Transporter and Server? A network test as I understand it, is the systems ability to stream music at different Kps rate (someone chime in if I have it wrong), so your 3000Kps vs. 35% is throwing everyone off. Normally the percent repercent the signal strengh of the wireless signal. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FUD, intellectual honesty, digital facts, and the TAS articles...
Where is MCR when you need him? Both sides of the debate need to be taken to task. On the digital side, those who claim converting lossless formats, copying files, transfer over a computer network and so on, cause differences are misinformed. The way digital computers and networks work is absolute fact, more fact than the earth not being flat, for example. To question it is more than wrong - it is literally nonsense. In this context, asking for proof in this context including DBTs is also nonsense. No proof is required, just understanding. We created that world. Outside of the digital arena, analogue-land, we are in the area of empirical science. Test data must be gathered from the real world, theories developed, and a search for contrary data starts. So for DACs, the effect of power supplies and electrical noise (EMI or RFI), amp distortion, etc, DBTs are valid. Of course a raft of measurements are also available which provide excellent guidance for people deciding what to listen to. As as been said, you can't follow up every crazy audiofool idea (nearly lapsed into Mr T!) As to which aspects of a computer's configuration could affect, even theoretically, electrical noise in a consistent, qualitatively better or worse way - there is also a lot misunderstanding about that too. And the whole concept is probably moot given the number of electrical devices, including computer hardware, installed in and around the typical home. I use a wifi Touch with an optical cable into Benchmark DAC1. This means I don't have to worry about interconnect borne noise or jitter. End of story. Obviously, the digital side is perfect. All that leaves is power supply borne EMI, and RFI. I am of the impression that DACs can sound subtly different even when they're not supposed to. However, my impression is the differences are unimportant compared to differences in room acoustics and loudspeakers. For those of you that use an iGadget to control your SBT, do you use the ssh app that Klaus recommends? Is it hard to use? I only want to do very simple things, like turn the display on/off say, or tt -s to see how things are. Does it work sort of like the command window in WinSCP (what I use now)? Basically an ssh app for my iPod will only save me a trip up/down the stairs to my desktop occasionally, so it's not a big deal functionally, just don't want to buy something I can't really use without a steep learning curve (like some of these progs have). ^ Some people may have really cruddy/noisy AC power. A better linear PS could help, typically just the isolation from the transformer itself could be the main factor. I noticed the diff between the stock PS and my custom one, but actually just using a decent *linear* wall-wart (most unavailable in the U.S. now due to the efficiency law) gave me most of the benefit that I could hear for very little cost. For all I know, perhaps in Europe the typically higher housing density than here (Canada), and the associated increase in noise from all the household electrical/electronic gear could make a fancier PS more worthwhile there. -- cfraser cfraser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48869 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93549 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps
Its already been stated that the dc blocking caps on the touch are not required by the AK dac chip as it already outputs 0v dc. Mine are removed and the pads linked. The clocks are low noise regulation powering quality oscillators. Ideally they should be much closer to the mux chips they supply but this unit is very much work in progress and ultimately I will get the oscillators much closer to their original position. I've never had an issue using short coax to distribute the clock. One of the things I have achieved is to remove some of the logic from the circuit which definitely had a significant positive effect. Yes I'm sure i have plenty of conceptual knowledge whatever the hell that is... I've been in this game for 35 years... using TOSLINK to connect Touch to DAC eliminates any galvanic connection between them. This means there is no electrical route for certain types of noise to pass between the units IN EITHER DIRECTION. The same would also be true for transformer isolated coax s/pdif connection, but these have other issues - for example the insistence on using unsuitable or badly screened/earthed transformers... yes I'm sure a USB-spdif converter can sound very different from a USB connection asynchronous) to a USB DAC. S/pdif sucks compared to PROPERLY implemented asynchronous USB or i2s because ofthe whole clock recovery/jitter issue. Not tha you can't royally mess up an i2s or asynchronous USB connection, of course...- As for your trick question, yes of course things can measure the same but sound different... This simply means the wrong thing is being measured. What is not DEBATEABLE is that an ADM (null delta) test will show if anything at all is different... Audible or not. If ADM says there is no difference, then there is NO DIFFERENCE. My server transfers data to the Squeezebox Touch using TCP/IP networking - nothing realtime there. Next the SBT converts to an audio bitstream and streams this to my DAC. Still not quite realtime, for two reasons - the PCM stream interleaves the left and right channels, and anyway, my DAC buffers this stream and reclocks it. You will find very few evidence ( probably none ) that a reasonably well made digital source is possible to tell from another such source what I mean by reasonably well made includes almost every source you can find today ( to paraphrase gödel there will be at least one source bad enough... ;) ) I also assume that one have taken the trivial steps to ensure bit perfectness before comparing sources. So before we start discussing tiny details about digital sources , where is the real research on to which extent they really matter . Let's recap where the source first fallacy comes from . * ye olde days when analog sources available to customers could be truly bad. * This pow was strongly argued by an upstart Scottish brand that at the beginning offered only an expensive source component *surprise* . 1) By cargo cult this is now transferred to apply to digital sources ? Another interesting set of straw men jitter recovery and the benchmark DAC this falls to pieces in several ways. Does it's output measure/is the same when feed inputs with different ( reasonable ) jitter levels or does it not ? Does it matter if the residual jitter is low enough , Beside the obvious point that most sources have lower jitter than any human can detect anyway. Which gives that their approach is really overkill to ensure good quality with even really bad sources and that is really not strictly necessary . Human beings will still be unable to detect different digital source components even if the DAC did not use benchmarks proprietary solutions or similar tech done by ess etc. These designs are a nice insurance policy that it will work in the most demanding settings. But the cargo cult has it that there is no low enough jitter level because they can still hear source differences in sighted golden eared testing . But what are our topics now re computer playback. Computer to squeezebox via tcp/ip computer can not possible influence given trivial steps to ensure bit perfectness . Computer interfaced to DAC , can be some unlikely sources of trouble but very improbable that they are audible given that some trivial stuff are fixed bit perfectness galvanic isolation if applicable, toslink maybe , as outlined by darell. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FUD, intellectual honesty, digital facts, and the TAS articles...
Maybe we can just come to the conclusion a) the authors of the TAS article have found sensational results. (if we believe them: their findings are really sensational and groundbreaking if we don't believe them: hey - we didn't ever believe one could come up with such a lot bullshit) b) when one has sensational results, one does need more profound testing (either as a first step or hopefully at least as a second step). One needs to doubt its own findings and try to reduce possible errors in the testing environment (like comparing, if the files compared actual are bit identical, if fragmentation of a harddrive matters more than the ripping program and of course also reduce placebo effects by doing blind tests) The authors miserably fail doing so. It shouldn't be left to the more unskilled readers to come to further conclusions if one is at least a little bit proud of ones own work. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device.
