Ok, that must be why my portable radio sounds identical to my main hifi
then!!!

Personally I tend to go with what my ears tell me but it is based on an
intermediate level of electronics knowledge. I don't use spice modelling
and I've never chosen anything based on quoted distortion levels. What I
can tell you is that there most definitely is an audible difference
between cap type and or no cap in the signal path. What's being
discussed is attempting to overcome the known short comings of
electrolytic caps in the signal path.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps

2012-02-29 Thread JohnSwenson

If you are going to perform surgery on the Touch you are much better off
getting rid of or bypassing the output caps all together. The DAC chip
already has a circuit which provides a signal that has no DC bias,
there is no need for a cap on the output. I really have no idea why
there is one in the first place. The only thing I can think of is that
the engineer that added the caps thought the DAC had a DC bias on its
output since it just uses a single 5V supply. (BTW the DAC chip has a
switching DC-DC converter inside to make the negative voltage)

Because the cap has its + terminal connected to the DAC chip you want
to apply a negative voltage to the other side to properly bias it. 6V
should be about right. An easy way to do this is a 6V alkaline lantern
battery. Connect the + lead of the battery to GND of the interconnect,
then run a resistor from the - terminal to each signal wire. (that's
two resistors, one for each channel, the other ends connected to the
negative 6V) IF the amp has a film cap (or bipolar electrolytic) on its
input, that's all you need. IF the AMP is DC coupled you will need to
add a film cap to each signal channel.

If you don't know what is on the input of the amp the safest bet is to
use the caps as well as the resistors, but if you know the amp already
has one, there is no reason to add another.

You can play around with the resistor value. I'm going to say somewhere
between 10K and 50K. The higher the value the less current will flow
through the battery, which means a longer battery life. Higher values
have a little more noise so there is a tradeoff here. You can use
inexpensive resistors or expensive resistors, that's up to you.

If you need the cap, that starts getting a bit more complicated. The
bottom end of the range is probably .5uf but you could also go up to
several uf depending on the amp input impedance etc. There is also a
huge range in price for different caps, from 20 cents to several
hundred dollars. Again I am not going to make ANY recommendation on
that. Just remember that there is already a cheap electrolytic coupling
cap in the chain.

I was specifically looking at an article that was analyzing what
happens with an unbiased polarized electrolytic while varying the input
voltage from .1V RMS to 2V RMS. I don't remember exactly where it is, I
can't find it right now.

How do you explain that? Does it mean that there is a loss in

Not sure what you mean... what files? - INGUZ runs in real-time and
takes input data (not files) and sends that data out to the player.
All data is piped through .exe processes in real-time - there are no
files involved.

How/where are you seeing these file sizes?

There is no loss of resolution in the Inguz process. The sample
rate/bitrate is unchanged (unless you use a special custom_convert.conf
like I do - in which case the data rate is increased!).

two components of the same cabinet (which it is!) There's no substitute

period of time, not just a 'flash' audition: very often, your opinion
of/acclimation to a piece of equipment changes considerably in the
first weekI agree, but I know of no dealer that will let you take home new,
 boxed,
equipment to try. Most are loathe to loan demonstration equipment out to
customers as they may need it in the meantime. However, a few will let
you buy and then return second hand kit that would otherwise sit on
their shelves. The main thing is to build up a decent relationship
with a dealer. Far better than saving a few quid by buying discounted
stuff on the internet and ending up disappointed.

Personally I found that my own speakers in the dealer's listening room
was a reasonable compromise. Better than listening to the amp via a
different brand or model in any case.

 1. Is it worth it to spend on a better DAC than the one you already
have?He is going to be listening to compressed formats streamed by Spotify. I
would be very surprised if any DAC made an appreciable improvement.
Different maybe, but better in any really obvious way? I doubt it.
However, if he finds a decent dealer he should be able to find that out
for himself and not rely on the unreliable opinions of the likes of me!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Data Rate Kbps

2012-02-29 Thread Recoveryone

Still confusing, how are you running the network when you get 3000Kps?
A lot of factors are in play here. Where is the LMS server located
from the Transporter? How far is your wireless router from the
Transporter and Server?

A network test as I understand it, is the systems ability to stream
music at different Kps rate (someone chime in if I have it wrong), so
your 3000Kps vs. 35% is throwing everyone off. Normally the percent
repercent the signal strengh of the wireless signal. And at 35% is
very low and could cause issues streaming Flac files or other Hi res
music.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Pink Triangle Ordinal with 24/96

Currently feeding my PT Ordinal (with 24 bit Filter module) with both
16/44 (from CD Transport SB3) and 24/48 (from SB3) - however does
anyone use this DAC with a SBT or Transporter with a 24/96 stream?
Does it work?

If not then the upgrade to 24/96 ( beyond) needs a new DAC as well as

If so, then I can just upgrade to a SBT.

The last years we had some real progress in the lytics materials. A
Panasonic FC or FM, Rubycon Z and several others have extremely low
inner resistance, ESR and very high SRF these days. So if any
meaurements hint to high distortion i´d like to see some measurements
done with these new generation caps. I even think that replacing a new
generation lytic with a film cap with much lower capacity leads to
weaker sound.

I'd also disable the UPnP/DLNA portion of LMS for a more accurate

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FUD, intellectual honesty, digital facts, and the TAS articles...

2012-02-29 Thread darrenyeats

Where is MCR when you need him?

Both sides of the debate need to be taken to task.

On the digital side, those who claim converting lossless formats,
copying files, transfer over a computer network and so on, cause
differences are misinformed. The way digital computers and networks
work is absolute fact, more fact than the earth not being flat, for
example. To question it is more than wrong - it is literally nonsense.
In this context, asking for proof in this context including DBTs is
also nonsense. No proof is required, just understanding. We created
that world.

Outside of the digital arena, analogue-land, we are in the area of
empirical science. Test data must be gathered from the real world,
theories developed, and a search for contrary data starts. So for DACs,
the effect of power supplies and electrical noise (EMI or RFI), amp
distortion, etc, DBTs are valid. Of course a raft of measurements are
also available which provide excellent guidance for people deciding
what to listen to. As as been said, you can't follow up every crazy
audiofool idea (nearly lapsed into Mr T!)

As to which aspects of a computer's configuration could affect, even
theoretically, electrical noise in a consistent, qualitatively better
or worse way - there is also a lot misunderstanding about that too. And
the whole concept is probably moot given the number of electrical
devices, including computer hardware, installed in and around the
typical home.

I use a wifi Touch with an optical cable into Benchmark DAC1. This
means I don't have to worry about interconnect borne noise or jitter.
End of story. Obviously, the digital side is perfect. All that leaves
is power supply borne EMI, and RFI.

I am of the impression that DACs can sound subtly different even when
they're not supposed to. However, my impression is the differences are
unimportant compared to differences in room acoustics and loudspeakers.

For those of you that use an iGadget to control your SBT, do you use the
ssh app that Klaus recommends? Is it hard to use? I only want to do very
simple things, like turn the display on/off say, or tt -s to see how
things are. Does it work sort of like the command window in WinSCP
(what I use now)? Basically an ssh app for my iPod will only save me a
trip up/down the stairs to my desktop occasionally, so it's not a big
deal functionally, just don't want to buy something I can't really use
without a steep learning curve (like some of these progs have).
Thanks.

[I often use the SBT for internet radio etc. and don't want to
necessarily have a computer on. iPod ssh would allow me to do config
changes in that case.]

^ Some people may have really cruddy/noisy AC power. A better linear PS
could help, typically just the isolation from the transformer itself
could be the main factor. I noticed the diff between the stock PS and
my custom one, but actually just using a decent *linear* wall-wart
(most unavailable in the U.S. now due to the efficiency law) gave me
most of the benefit that I could hear for very little cost. For all I
know, perhaps in Europe the typically higher housing density than here
(Canada), and the associated increase in noise from all the household
electrical/electronic gear could make a fancier PS more worthwhile
there.

2012-02-29 Thread item_audio

darrenyeats;693273 Wrote:
Where is MCR when you need him?

Both sides of the debate need to be taken to task.

On the digital side, those who claim converting lossless formats,
copying files, transfer over a computer network and so on, cause
differences are misinformed. The way digital computers and networks
work is absolute fact, more fact than the earth not being flat, for
example. To question it is more than wrong - it is literally nonsense.
Asking for proof in this context including DBTs is also nonsense. No
 proof is required, just understanding!

Outside of the digital arena, analogue-land, we are in the area of
empirical science. Test data must be gathered from the real world,
theories developed, and a search for contrary data starts. So the
audibility of power supplies and electrical noise (EMI or RFI) is a
valid subject of DBTs. Of course a raft of measurements are also
available which provide excellent guidance for people deciding what to
listen to. As as been said, you can't follow up every crazy audiofool
idea (nearly lapsed into Mr T!)

This
means I don't have to worry about interconnect borne noise or transport
jitter. End of story. Obviously, the digital side is perfect. All that
leaves is power supply borne EMI, and RFI.

I am of the impression that DACs can sound different even when they're
not supposed to. However, my impression is the differences are much
subtler than differences in room acoustics and loudspeakers.

I've had the impression of differences in transports in the past, but
never with anything I've plugged into the Benchmark.
 Darren

Little disagreement between us: philosophically/scientifically entering
Gödel territory, I don't feel quite the certainty you do about 'possible
causes', but I agree the digital argument for asynchronous storage and
data transfer currently looks chinkless.

However there's a clear line to be drawn between literally asynchronous
'storage' and live, dynamic playback. The former is a two-dimensional,
linear, predictable system that's very easily quantified. The latter is
a chaotic, intermodulating 'four dimensional' system that's very hard to
quantify. Which is exactly how I draw the line between the credible and
the unlikely: storage is storage (ie, bits are bits), but any
modification of the realtime playback environment is likely to affect
performance and/or perception of it.

The distinction between digital and analog is also (generally)
misleadingly overstated, which promotes a number of urban myths.

And I joined the party some time ago that takes issue with Benchmark's
claims that their DAC is 'perfect'. “Obviously the digital side is
perfect” is a classic setup for a fall, and makes the average digital
designer weep into his beer with mirth. All manner of stuff prejudices
a DAC1's performance - but maybe we're in a position to have thrown
more toys at it than most.

But yes, definitely, all this transport malarkey is less influential
that gross aspects of the system such as transducers and room
interaction.

With value i mean replacing a 100µF cap with some audiophile 4,7µF film
is a no-no in my book. 10 years back it was really worth to get rid of
the caps in a CD player. Even the more expensive players had lousy

If I can Paxman you for a direct answer: do you believe it's possible
for a better PSU to improve an SB connected optically to a DAC?

No doubt you see the implication of the question, and why it relates so
directly to the less alarming conclusions reached by TAS. I've no
interest in discussing intangible claims to do with bit-rot or the
astral plane or chakra alignment of a given file format. I am
interested in real world performance and real world issues.

Here's another one: is it possible for a USB SPDIF converter to sound
different to a direct USB connection? Or to another USB SPDIF
converter? What about upgrading the power supply to a USB SPDIF
converter?

Bits-are-bits 'purists' feel that that nothing could be less useful
than a device that turns noughts and ones into exactly the same noughts
and ones traveling along a different wire.

Some here evidently feel that using an optical cable out of the
transport makes everything else about that device irrelevant, or that
'analog domain' modifications like power supplies have no effect on
digital signals.

Do you have the conceptual knowledge to see why/how these things could
- in theory - sound different?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps

2012-02-29 Thread Wombat

One thing i see for your Touch is that the evaluation Board from Asahi
themself uses no caps in the output of the 4420.
http://www.asahi-kasei.co.jp/akm/en/product/ak4420/ak4420.html

One more thing is that i saw you exchange the clocks with some mudules
that have several cm of wire. How does this wire alone influence the
clock quality? Never found some clear measurements for this on the
modding sides.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps

2012-02-29 Thread UV101

Its already been stated that the dc blocking caps on the touch are not
required by the AK dac chip as it already outputs 0v dc. Mine are
removed and the pads linked.

The clocks are low noise regulation powering quality oscillators.
Ideally they should be much closer to the mux chips they supply but
this unit is very much work in progress and ultimately I will get the
oscillators much closer to their original position. I've never had an
issue using short coax to distribute the clock. One of the things I
have achieved is to remove some of the logic from the circuit which
definitely had a significant positive effect.

The details are here
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91794
I don't sell anything clocks or regs so I'm not looking to convince
anyone that they need to buy them. They exist for my own amusement! ;)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FUD, intellectual honesty, digital facts, and the TAS articles...

2012-02-29 Thread Phil Leigh

item_audio;693322 Wrote:

Another question (this one a trick): do you believe that two components
can measure the same but sound different?
Oh God... Deep sigh...

Yes I'm sure i have plenty of conceptual knowledge whatever the hell
that is... I've been in this game for 35 years...

using TOSLINK to connect Touch to DAC eliminates any galvanic
connection between them. This means there is no electrical route for
certain types of noise to pass between the units IN EITHER DIRECTION.

The same would also be true for transformer isolated coax s/pdif
connection, but these have other issues - for example the insistence on
using unsuitable or badly screened/earthed transformers...

yes I'm sure a USB-spdif converter can sound very different from a USB
connection asynchronous) to a USB DAC.

S/pdif sucks compared to PROPERLY implemented asynchronous USB or i2s
because ofthe whole clock recovery/jitter issue. Not tha you can't
royally mess up an i2s or asynchronous USB connection, of course...-

As for your trick question, yes of course things can measure the same
but sound different... This simply means the wrong thing is being
measured.

What is not DEBATEABLE is that an ADM (null delta) test will show if
anything at all is different... Audible or not. If ADM says there is no
difference, then there is NO DIFFERENCE.

So bring on your esoteric tweaks to alter the output from the DAC by
changing what is happening in the SB player...and let ADM detect the
reality of such claims.

Don't fancy that? ... Don't blame you. So far a lot of things have
failed... Expensive digital cables being the first victim :-)

OK, ignoring that you can't quite bring yourself to say that the bits
are bits fact applies to their transfer, not just their storage, now I
have a definable term (realtime) to get my teeth into. My server
transfers data to the Squeezebox Touch using TCP/IP networking -
nothing realtime there. Next the SBT converts to an audio bitstream and
streams this to my DAC. Still not quite realtime, for two reasons - the
PCM stream interleaves the left and right channels, and anyway, my DAC
buffers this stream and reclocks it. So as far as I understand, there
is no realtime playback in my system until the output from my DAC.

+1

Thank you for actually replying sensible to items latest barrage of fud
straw men and trolling, the post you replied to is so bizarre that it's
hard to know where to start sorting it out :-/

If you expand your point 2 , removing all fud spread by TAS or similar
audio press and audiophile fora etc, this is anecdotal golden eared
listening and is not information in any way about the subject.

You will find very few evidence ( probably none ) that a reasonably
well made digital source is possible to tell from another such source
what I mean by reasonably well made includes almost every source you
can find today ( to paraphrase gödel there will be at least one source
bad enough... ;) )
I also assume that one have taken the trivial steps to ensure bit
perfectness before comparing sources.

So before we start discussing tiny details about digital sources ,
where is the real research on to which extent they really matter .

Let's recap where the source first fallacy comes from .

* ye olde days when analog sources available to customers could be
truly bad.

* This pow was strongly argued by an upstart Scottish brand that at the
beginning offered only an expensive source component *surprise* . 1)

By cargo cult this is now transferred to apply to digital sources ?

Another interesting set of straw men jitter recovery and the benchmark
DAC this falls to pieces in several ways. Does it's output measure/is
the same when feed inputs with different ( reasonable ) jitter levels
or does it not ? Does it matter if the residual jitter is low enough ,
Beside the obvious point that most sources have lower jitter than any
human can detect anyway.
Which gives that their approach is really overkill to ensure good
quality with even really bad sources and that is really not strictly
necessary .
Human beings will still be unable to detect different digital source
components even if the DAC did not use benchmarks proprietary solutions
or similar tech done by ess etc.
These designs are a nice insurance policy that it will work in the most
demanding settings.

But the cargo cult has it that there is no low enough jitter level
because they can still hear source differences in sighted golden
eared testing .

But what are our topics now re computer playback.

Computer to squeezebox via tcp/ip computer can not possible influence
given trivial steps to ensure bit perfectness .

Computer interfaced to DAC , can be some unlikely sources of trouble
but very improbable that they are audible given that some trivial stuff
are fixed bit perfectness galvanic isolation if applicable, toslink
maybe , as outlined by darell.

Maybe we can just come to the conclusion

a) the authors of the TAS article have found sensational results.
(if we believe them: their findings are really sensational and
groundbreaking
if we don't believe them: hey - we didn't ever believe one could come
up with such a lot bullshit)

b) when one has sensational results, one does need more profound
testing (either as a first step or hopefully at least as a second
step).
One needs to doubt its own findings and try to reduce possible errors
in the testing environment (like comparing, if the files compared
actual are bit identical, if fragmentation of a harddrive matters more
than the ripping program and of course also reduce placebo effects by
doing blind tests)

The authors miserably fail doing so.

It shouldn't be left to the more unskilled readers to come to further
conclusions if one is at least a little bit proud of ones own work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch output caps

This tiny layout is really hard to work with.
This I think is one of the reasons John is looking at alternatives to
opening up the unit. Most people just dont want to open the unit and
start removing / replacing components.

I saw real world measurememnts that made decoupling caps worse as a
cheap smd cap only becuse of the leads and 1mm already can hurt.

Again, its work in progress. Those lead lengths are far from ideal but
I wanted to get the unit back in it's case. Some are ok but the ones on
the mux chips are far too long. Happy to continue this discussion on the
other thread I linked too ;)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Pink Triangle Ordinal with 24/96

2012-02-29 Thread Mnyb

This DAC seems to be an really old design what does it's manual say ?

Even if it's filter is 24bit it seems to be an 18bit DAC and I supose
limited to 48kHZ

You can still use with a SBT untill you play 96 or 88.2 kHz content .

Otherwise an SB3 also outputs 24bit so it truncates to 18 probably ?
but manuals are hard to find ?
