Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Which headphones?

2009-05-27 Thread BlueScreenJunky

ok thanx a lot =)
I'll just get an official replacement cable for my 600s I guess, I
don't really believe in cables improving sound quality and the
aftermarket ones I saw were ridiculously expensive.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Which headphones?

2009-05-26 Thread BlueScreenJunky

Hi Rodney, since you have both HD600 and 650, I was hoping you could
help me with two things :
1- can you use the cord of the 650 on the 600 ? I need to replace the
one on my HD600 and for some reason the HD650 cord is much cheaper (and
it has a regular jack).
2- Would you say it's worth upgrading from 600 to 650 ?

Damn ! I was hoping i'd be able to do that in order to so the same kind
of testings (A friend of mine will bring his Zhaolu DAC to compare it
with SB3's DAC).
So, is there any other way to level the volumes ? (which does not
involve buying some expensive hardware)

Nope, only an integrated amp. I'll see what I can do with squeezeslave
and the digital output of my PC :-/

I'll check passive attenuation too, thanx.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Burn in time?

2009-02-09 Thread BlueScreenJunky

Hahaha !
Best post I've read in a while Gandt ! That's exactly what happens to
me too ^^
And I'm convinced that burn-in has a very limited effect (there might
be one or not, I don't know), but it sure takes some time to get used
to new hardware and enjoy it fully.

By the way, something that might help with stage i) is to switch back
to your old equipment once you got used to the new one. Two Months ago
I upgraded my speakers (Elipson Horus 2 - Elipson Horus 5) and was a
little disappointed by the difference considering the Horus 5 are three
time as big and three time as expensive...
However, last week I sold the old ones, so the buyer came over to
listen to them and I was like Wow, they sound so flat, I'm glad I
switched (except I didn't say it aloud of course ^^)

How is a washing machine not frivolous ? Who needs clean clothes when
you can have $2000+ RCA cables ? :-P

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use replaygain ?

2009-01-16 Thread BlueScreenJunky

Oh, this issue is actually discussed in the replaygain FAQ :
http://replaygain.hydrogenaudio.org/faq_noise.html

(And the conclusion is exactly what you said : if you process a 16-bit
recording through a 24-bit device, it shouldn't be a problem.)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use replaygain ?

2009-01-15 Thread BlueScreenJunky

I have never read anything about it, but isn't replaygain a bad thing as
far as sound quality is concerned ? Since it involves reducing the
volume, there is necessarily some loss of information somewhere, so I
guess it would be a better idea to always play at the maximum volume
and adjust your amp...

So, what do you guys (and girls) think ? Does replaygain reduce sound
quality ? if so, is it noticeable ?

Thanx !

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I use replaygain ?

2009-01-15 Thread BlueScreenJunky

thanx for the advice ^^

I'll probably test it out once I receive my SB3. I just wanted to make
sure it wasn't too harmful for the sound quality before spending the
night scanning my collection (well I won't sit in front of the
computer, but still ^^), And you're right, I didn't think about the
fact that I could turn it on or off very easily from the SB itself =)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Squeezebox vs Xbox 360?

2009-01-09 Thread BlueScreenJunky

Thanx, you both pretty much answered my question (and another question
which was should I get a DAC with the SB3 ?), so I'll get a SB3 and
just enjoy the music, and I'll see next year if I can get even more out
of it =)

As a 40+yr old, my hearing is supposedly sucky. (The irony of
audiophilia is that the majority of people suffering from this disease
are in the declining years of their hearing...)
Your ear is getting less sensitive, especially in higher frequencies,
but it doesn't mean you'll be less likely to tell the difference
between High quality sound and lower quality : It's actually your brain
that does most of the job. Some people can't hear the difference between
128kbps mp3 and lossless, but it's probably not because of their ears,
just that they don't know how to listen ^^
