I'm using Touch with my Naim DAC. Anyway, we also tested 840c in my system and I know how it sounds. Naim DAC is more natural an relaxed, with wider imaging in all directions. -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87098 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

A friend of mine went from 840C to Naim DAC. He felt that it was a significant upgrade. Actually, we both upgraded our digital setups to nDACs at the same time. -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87098 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Soundcheck, Can this mod be separated in two mods? :) Plase? :) Why the Alsa plugin output mode tweak, had to go together with activating/deactivating spdif/analog outputs and USB? I would like to have only spdif output active, but at the same time, I would also like to be able to listen to some of my favorite internet radio stations, which are now suffering from the chipmunk effect. . -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84742 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I did't listen very long but *'is it dull?'* This initial observation of yours was interesting. It somewhat coincides with my some of my impressions. I installed (almost) all of the mods, including 100% volume mod. I only left the screen unmodified. Wireless, USB and analog outs are disabled, only the digital out is left on. Buffer is set to recommended value of 4000. Flac files are transcoded to PCM on the PC side. PC is running last version of SBServer on Win XP. Everything is wired through the Belkin N+ hub with Bandridge VL unshielded CAT 5e wire. I'm using my Touch with Naim DAC, which has an unique option to play PCM wav files stored on USB memory sticks. This is not USB DAC. There is no USB connection to computer - you just plug an USB memory stick in it and it starts playing. This way, we have an option of avoiding influence of transport quality, SPDIF interface, cabling, etc, thus having the closest thing to the pure sound of the DAC as the reference sound. ;) My SPDIF cable is Stereovox XV2, with BNC connection on DAC side. When I compare the sound of modded Touch / Naim DAC combination with the sound of Naim DAC alone (playing PCM wav directly from the USB memory stick), Touch/Naim combination sounds somewhat *duller*. Naim DAC alone, in memory stick mode, has greater dynamics, transients are sharper, there is more attack, bass has greater slam and kick, mids and highs are more detailed, treble is more extended, there is more air around instruments. Imaging is wider and deeper. Everything is more vivid. Difference is not (it never is :) ) night and day, but it is very obvious. Enough for me to worry about it, since I'm not using the full potential of this excellent DAC. :) BUT...!!! When I did put a SD card with the same music in the Touch, I was very surprised! The sound became much closer to the real sound of Naim DAC. Something I could live with. :) In this scenario all the mods are still present, but the internal Tiny SBS is running and FLAC decoding is done inside the Touch. This is supposed to be the bad thing, but the sound is better and it is very close to the "real" sound of the DAC. So, I guess that these mods might give you a *different* sound. Judging from this (still limited) experience, I'm not convinced that they will always bring sound quality improvement in absolute terms. They only may bring you the sound you will *like* more, depending on your personal preferences and/or the rest of your equipment. . -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84742 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Even coax cables can sound different. I can not agree with some of your observations. Touch's bass is not boomy over SPDIF. Quite the opposite! I got much better defined (and even leaner) bass with Touch. I have really big speakers (refurbished vintage Acoustic Research AR-90) and they can sound boomy if something is not set right. And inexistent stereo separation? I didn't notice anything like that. Together with some friends, we compared Touch and Audiolab 8000CDM dedicated CD transport. They were feeding an old Wadia Digimaster X-32 DAC. The Touch was much better in role of digital transport. Also, that Wadia is known to be very selective regarding quality of transport feeding it. If transport is not of the highest quality it completely refuses to lock to the signal: > > > http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/wadia_digimaster_x-32_digital_processor/ > > There have, however, been some problems in the field because of this > circuit. Wadia locked to its signal without any problems and this was not the case with some other transports that it's owner had tried previously. . -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79914 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Simple EQ plugin for SB? My music PC is not powerful enough for Inguz.
Hi, I'm running SqueezeCenter 7.3.3 on WinXP, on a miniature PC with a VIA C7 1.2GHz fanless integrated mini ITX board, fitted with 1 GB RAM. It is a low powered and silent machine, that is turned on 24/7. Unfortunately it is not powerful enough to run Inguz. :( Does anybody know if out there, some simple EQ plugin exists for SqueezeCenter? Something like EQ in Foobar? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 SPDIF out - the simplest mod that brings the biggest improvement?
Hello, I'm sorry for crossposting this... I also posted this in DIY forum, since I'm not sure if all DIY-ers come often to Audiophiles forum. I'm a happy SB3 owner for almost three years. I use it exclusively through its coax digital out, connected to Pedja Rogic's NOS TDA1541 DAC. http://www.hifi-forumi.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=4846&p=56506 My DAC has the optional reclocker board installed. Recently I tried Stereovox digital cable instead of my Bandridge Profigold digital IC. I've got noticeable improvements, especially in bass definition. For a long time now I had been toying with the idea of improving SPDIF out on my SB3. If I had such an improvement with a new cable, I might get more of the good thing by tweaking SB's digital out... Right? The problem is that when I started searching, I got swamped with numerous variations of similar soultions. It is hard to tell which solutions will actually improve things... Some of them could make them even worse? There is this (now legendary) thread on Audio Circle that I'm sure everybody knows about: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=45330 Pat (art) did a great job analyzing SB3's digital output with a scope. He proved that some non competent tweaking can make things worse. Also, he said that he did not listen to the results of his mods... There is a big difference on scope screen, but how this translate to actual sound? He suggested that a simplest and most effective mod is removing two inductors (L8 and L9) and adding a BNC instead of RCA socket. As I understood those inductors are there for reducing EMI, so that SB can meet some regulations (and that has nothing to do with sound quality). The big question is: if I remove them, is increased EMI going to do some harm to SPDIF signal going to my DAC? Osciloscope trace might look flatter, but the resulting sound coming out of my DAC could be worse? DID ANYBODY HERE MODDED SB3 BY ONLY REMOVING THOSE INDUCTORS? IF YES, CAN YOU DESCRIBE CHANGES IN SOUND IN DETAIL? Pat has suggested that this mod (together with adding BNC socket) might be all that average listener needs to do. The simplest mod that brings the biggest improvement! Exactly the thing I'm looking for. :) The next modding level would be adding a transformer... As I understood, the role of transformer is to galvanically isolate SB form DAC by separating their grounds? Can transformer protect my DAC from EMI polluted SPDIF signal (if there is such a thing) after those inductors are removed?! Or... the EMI had induced some garbage in a SPDIF signal... since the transformer does not "know" the difference between this garbage and the pure signal, it juss passes them together without any change to DAC, where some bad things happen? I'm sorry If I'm asking stupid questions!!! I'm not a modder/tweaker type of person. :) I just want get as good results as possible with the minimal ammount of modding. If removing inductors will bring 80% of improvement and adding transformer will bring additional 20%, I will be more than happy to live with those first 80%, since I'm not sure that in everyday listening I will be always able to appreciate the additional 20% of improvement. Thanks in advance, Aleksandar PS If this is important, my DAC is connected through Sansui AU-alpha 707DR integrated amplifier to restored vintage Acoustic Research AR-90 speakers. http://www.kujucev.com/ar90sansui/ar90-6-sistem.jpg . -- Kuja Kuja's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68192 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
