Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Price of a 2nd-hand Transporter ?
Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated. I see the bidding for the Transporter on *Bay in the UK is now up to UKP 550. Still not a bad price, I think, but of course it may well go higher between now and the end of the auction. Thanks again for the helpful replies. -- Vereina Vereina's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87978 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Price of a 2nd-hand Transporter ?
I'd appreciate some advice on what is the going rate for second-hand Transporters. (I ask, because I have no real idea of what would be a reasonable figure. I see that there is one for sale at the moment on the well-known auction website, here in the UK; right now, the bidding is currently at what seems to me a pretty low level.) Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What outboard DAC do you use with Squeezebox?
Until recently, I was using: Transporter digital output connected to the digital input of my Mark Levinson 390S (but connecting directly to the pre-amp for higher resolution files); and Squeezebox Receiver connected to the digital input of my 5103 (in a different system). However, I have now purchased a Linn Akurate DS, and have moved the Transporter to the second system, and am now using its own DAC, connecting it to the line input of the 5103. My impressions have been that, for 44.1kHz / 16-bit files, the ML DAC is somewhat superior, but that the Transporter's own is materially better than the 5103's. (The ADS does not have a digital output, but in any of the comparisons I have done, it is significantly better than any of the other combinations I have tried in my main system.) -- Vereina Vereina's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72018 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Hard (probably so in the vast majority of cases), but not *always* so. -- Vereina Vereina's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64028 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64028 Question: To what is your Transporter connected - Preamp - Poweramp It's not an answer to your question, but I can give you a perspective that may be relevant. For about eighteen months, I had my CD player (which has a good quality volume control) directly connected to ATC active loudspeakers, using an XLR balanced connection. This was a nice, minimalist setup and, so I thought, sounded pretty good. However, when I purchased a Transporter and decided to move my LP12 to this system, I obviously needed a pre-amp, and was lucky enough to get a second-hand ATC SCA2. This was a major improvement! I can only conclude that the SCA2 is better (yes, better, not different) at driving the ATC power amps. Perhaps the input and output impedances are better matched? (They clearly should be a good match, being manufactured by the same company ...) Perhaps the SCA2 is easier for the CD player to drive? Perhaps the CD player's direct output (without volume control) is better? Clearly, there may be cases where no pre-amp is better but, in this particular instance, the pre-amp was very definitely an improvement. -- Vereina Vereina's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64028 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transportrer with high end DAC
I can give you one perspective on this, based on trying my Transporter with my Mark Levinson 390S CD player. (The 390S has digital inputs, so can also be used as a DAC, although without a word clock connection. I should also say that I have only just purchased the Transporter, so this is not based on long periods of listening.) My impression is that playing the digital output from the Transporter via the 390S was somewhat more detailed, compared going direct from the Transporter's balanced output to my pre-amp. It was hard, though, the get the volume levels exactly the same, so I could not claim that this was, in any sense, an objective comparison. And WSLam is quite right to make the point, that different is not necessarily better One other point: this comparison was only made with 44.1kHz / 16 bit recordings. It seems that the 390S only accepts CD-level resolution on its digital inputs (although it does then upsample). I must say that 88.2kHz / 24 bit FLAC files played direct through the Transporter sound fantastic! In any event, although some difference (improvement?) may be possible by connecting via an external DAC, I am inclined to say that it is probably not worth it. Whether with 44.1 / 16 or higher resolutions, the Transporter on its own sounds great! No need to experiment, in my opinion -- Vereina Vereina's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=59067 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] More Classical lossless FLAC downloads from DG
This is great! Well spotted! Let's hope that more of the back catalogue appears soon. And, what's more, DG currently have a 3 for the price of 2 offer at their web shop. Does anybody happen to know the spec of these recordings? (The display on my CD player, which I am using as the DAC for my SB Receiver, is showing 44hKz sampling rate, and I don't think my SqueezeCentre is downsampling, but I can't tell whether the word length is 16 or 24 bits. I suspect that these recordings are simply FLAC copies of the CDs.) -- Vereina Vereina's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55798 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
