Oddly, I use the knob all the time, often going for something in New

wasn't there I'd adjust.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Mac Mini as server?

2011-04-01 Thread dizzysnakepilot

Unclear on some of the details discussed in this thread, but I use a Mac
Mini serving primarily ripped FLACs from an external Iomega drive to my
Transporter over wifi and into my Linn Aktiv bi-amped stereo. It
sounds spectacular, even in comparison to my (previously considered
excellent) Linn CD player.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Active Crossover as plugin or otherwise

2011-04-01 Thread dizzysnakepilot

If I'm understanding this thread correctly- proposed is the idea of
doing a software crossover and then independently amplifying the
results? Sound promising.

I switched from a mono-amped Linn setup to a active bi-amped some years
ago. I have two amplifiers which are modded with hardware cards
specific to the particular model of speaker I have. Each amp drives
one of the types of speaker cones in the speaker. It works great, and
is different as well as better than the mono-amped system.

What the software version would be missing, it seems, is the correct
and precise crossover profile that is matched exactly to each physical
speaker cone in the speaker (as Linn can do since it's all a matched
system)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What are you feeding your Transporter?

2010-08-01 Thread dizzysnakepilot

Actually, I saw a post by Sean here telling that WiFi may leak some RF
noise into signal...
at least in theory, wired connection has an advantage

Theory is reality for me- Sean replied to my thread about hearing a
clicking noise in my speakers with this explanation. If the RCA cords
from the Transporter to my pre-amp pass near enough the WiFi antennae,
I hear a faint clicking. I still get this from time to time and have
to push the cords around till it stops.

My pre-amp is higher on my rack than the Transporter, so the cords go
up past the antennae.

The sound is loud enough I would imagine it would be easy for anyone to
duplicate. It's easier to hear if you turn the Transporter digital
volume down and the pre-amp volume up.

2010-01-02 Thread dizzysnakepilot

i noticed a faint ticking sound a few weeks ago. by reducing the

i traced the problem to some wires near the transporters antennas.

moving the wires away cured the ticking problem

the linked threads does not address this issue so i am adding it to
this thread.

so the upshot for me is the transporter antennas can pick up
interference.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] s/w tube emulation with transporter- stuck on just one thing

2009-08-31 Thread dizzysnakepilot

i can listen to my tube preamp software emulated file on my computer but
not the transporter.

here is what ive done:

1. started with a ripped flac on my mac mini.
2. moved the file to the shared folder with my vmware virtualized
windows xp machine
3. converted the flac to a wav file in xp
4. downloaded an impulse response file for a preamp i want to try from
the internet
5. use foobar2000 to convert the mono impulse response file to a stereo
file
6. used ConvolverCMD with 0 partitions, 0 tuningrigour (sic) and 0
attenuation, the stereo ir file, and my input wav file and it convolves
to a wav output file
7. took the resulting wav file and moved back to the mac
8. put the file in a music folder and had squeeze center rescan for new
music
9. tried to play the file on the transporter- it wont play and just
skips to the next track
10. also tried using Max to convert the wav file to a flac, no good

what i think is wrong is the convolved wav file is 32 bit and the
transporter doesnt like that?

can i convert it to 16bit? how? i believe the convolver expects a 32
bit input file for some reason- it does give a warning that the wav
input and the filter are different bit rates. however, itunes can play
the resulting 32 bit wav file.

ideas?

finally, if anyone has an easier what to accomplish this (software
emulation through squeezecenter to the transporter, i am all ears!)

thanks!

james

2009-08-05 Thread dizzysnakepilot

thanks for the replies.

after 15 minutes it started to sound better. that first 5 minutes was
brutal.

i am not using the crossovers in the speakers. the amplifiers are
modified with speaker-specific cards that cause them to amplify the
tweeter and other drivers separately. supposedly this is more efficient
because the speaker crossovers arent absorbing the amp's power.

i got a sense of the attraction of the precision of the transporter-
clean, detailed, controlled.

but the treble sounds buzzy and my wife pointed out the whole sound is
much more 2D where the genki creates an illusion of depth.

i will keep playing and listening. its strange to me that solid state
devices would be affected by burn-in.

i found a transporter review that described the startup sound as very
hot and harsh treble, which matches my experience.

the transporter is using a basic quality interconnect, while the cd
player (and everything else) has 100% linn to the speakers.

i like the idea of using the transporter DAC with the cd player.

anyone wants to loan me a klimax ds, i wont refuse :)

someone mentioned max for osx. the same developer has a new program
called 'rip' which is supposed to be better for just ripping.

i found out i have to manually refresh the music scanning for it to see
the FLAC files. these play fine.

looking forward to trying a 24/96khz file too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] just got new transporter, very disappointed with sound

2009-08-05 Thread dizzysnakepilot

If that is the case, you are most probably overloading your Linn
pre-amp!

excellent thought! the reason i set it to max is because digital
attentuation is supposed to reduce the bit resolution. several sources
suggest setting the transporter to max and

also, with the transporter set to max, the apparent loudness is still a
little softer than the genki. that means i am probably ok.

however, i can try two things:

1. reduce the transporter volume
2. set the internal transporter attenuation

thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DAC reccomendations...Looking for some warmth

2009-08-05 Thread dizzysnakepilot

i just got my transporter yesterday. its very accurate, and i am coming
from an all-linn system! i never thought my linn cd player would sound
warm!

i have heard there are software tube emulation applications- does
anyone know of a way to play a flac through one of these? would be fun
to try.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] anyone use a software emulated tube stage with their transporter?

2009-08-05 Thread dizzysnakepilot

if so, how did you do it and which emulator did you use?

just curious to try different noise makers in the signal path.

thanks,

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] just got new transporter, very disappointed with sound

2009-08-04 Thread dizzysnakepilot

just hooked up a new transporter, playing an apple lossless file, and
even without an a-b comparison with the cd player, the sound is small,
compressed and without nuance. using the rca outputs.

i have the transporter volume set to max.

the rest of my system is: linn kolector to 2 aktive bi-amped lk140s and
linn ninkas. the comparison cd player is the bottom of the line linn
genki.

could i just not be used to the sound? even my wife walked by and said
it didnt sound that good.

my question is: what can i do to make it sound better?

thanks!
