Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile power supply / conditioning

2009-03-09 Thread mudlark

I've just looked at the stereophile article regarding power supplies
and there is a sentence In short, AC provides the raw material used by
audio components to do their job.

What a load of old bollocks. It seems to read to me that the author is
suggesting that AC is required to power an amplifier to produce AC
signals.

Ac is produced at a power station for generation and transmission
reasons not to produce Ac signals.

An amplifier power supply is simple in most cases. It is there to
provide DC without imparting audible distortion on the output at the
cheapest price possible. Audiophile PSU are over designed to deal with
perceived issues with cheap power supplies.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter in 2009?

My niche product would be a transporter style half width box with no
wireless, no dac just spdif outlets. probably an AES outlet too. (I
don't use AES but it might help if the Transporter Mini had some
diversity!)

On board linear power supply of course. There could be an off board
power supply connector too for the lunatics (That includes me) that
want to connect a external 24V power supply to it.

Build this now, you know it makes sense.

Question: Direct to power amp?

- Yes
- No

I use a quad 405-2 direct, but it has had the input gain reduced to 1.5
volts.

The conversion works, but the reduction in gain should be described as
a reduction in sensitivity to 1.5 Volts for full output. The standard
is 500mV for full output.

When connecting my SB3 the standard volume setting seems to be 50%
which works very well with the small Mission speakers that I use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sound of Ripped CDs not good, what do I do?

2008-11-18 Thread mudlark

Radio signals which are playing pop type music are almost always
compressed, the quiet stuff is louder and the loud stuff quieter and
then the gain is turned up. This makes the dynamic range much less,
there are no quiet moments in the music. In the UK the most obvious
example of this is radio 3 and radio 1 on the internet. Radio 1 sounds
very exciting and immediate and in order to listen to it I would have
to turn the volume down. If I then tune to a concert on Radio 3 there
have been occasions when there has been no music audible until I turn
the volume up to the correct level

I feel that many people forget the masking effect of frequencies at
higher levels than these audiophile frequencies above 20Khz. In the
general course of a piece of music there are few occasions when there
is space in the overall sound to hear high frequency material. If the
high frequencies are more than 20dB down from the main noise level it
is unlikely that you would hear the high frequencies at all.

I would be interested to see copies of research about high frequency
event audiability in the run of a typical music program.

Dunno,

Most here might feel that posting in the audiophile section is a bit
rich.

On a positive side it appears that the Cambridges both have pre outs if

Use the cambridge with the arcam set to a suitable volume for the
fronts.

The DAC in the Squeezebox is probably better than that in the cambridge
so use the sb connected directly to the Arcam.

Surely the test of any improvements to any piece of equipment is if it
plays music well to produce a more enjoyable sound.

This assumes the modifications meet a basic measurable standard.

If the above were not true then nobody would buy any valve gear.

I believe that empirical work is very important to producing good
stuff.

I also believe that it is better to keep your more bizarre theories as
to why one scheme works better than another are best kept to yourself.
It is very easy to throw credibility through the window.

Surely impulse response is the same as wide bandwidth.

An impulse signal has a short rise time and the shape of the wave means
high frequency components.

if the equipment tests well with single frequencies up to say 40kHz
then it should deal with any audible impulse signal.

Hi folks,

Studio monitors are highly accurate machines which tend to be used in
the near field. Their bass response is often not what most consumers
want.

my understanding is that in the hands of experienced audio engineers
they can be used to set the balance of a recording.

As for filling a listening room with pleasant and easy sound and good
bass they leave alot to be desired.

With a lot of experience it is possible to integrate these near field
monitors with a low frequency unit. (I hate the term sub-woofer)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Have you tried Studio Monitors (Pro Audio gear...) at home?

2007-07-25 Thread mudlark

Phil,

I would certainly agree that my post was a generalisation. The point I
was trying to make is that consumers listening in rooms that have
absorbent decoration and can be quite large are not going to be filled
with pleasant sound if you use a small studio monitor type speaker. I
am sure there are full range studio monitors, but I an sure that the
listening experience is often very close to the speakers and in rooms
with high reverberation times.

T'other guy. I would assume that most speakers are put together in the
first place by a knowledgeable designer who uses a PC programme to
select drivers and cross overs and enclosure volume etc. They will
almost certainly put together many variations and test these in real
listening rooms of varying types to refine the design.

How these designs can be represented by over complex measurement i
don't know. There are so many variables that I wonder which information
is relevant for any particular listening experience. At the end of the
day, IMHO, the only way to get a good speaker is to try it in the
listening room at home. So in short, no.

regards,
mike.

I am surprised to hear that studios and mixing rooms go to the effort of
using a listening room that even slightly behaves like a consumer living
room. I consider my self to be admonished.

It is obvious that some music is produced in studios that like to
over-emphasise bass levels and even the higher frequencies to make the
cr*p they produce sound good on poor home equipment. If your home gear
is good such poorly mastered stuff can sound desperate.

Make a nuisance of yourself by visiting audiodphile dealers and
listening to their advice.

Try to buy something from them as its an expensive business being an
audiophile dealer.

Read lots of magazines.

To be a real audiophile try listening to your music rather than your
system.

Visit lots of websites,

After a couple of months you can either

1. Listen to some music.

2. Drive yourself mad trying to make your system turn the listening
experience into a mind changing delight.

Please note there are lots of nice people in the audiophile world, but
also a lot of nutters. (respect to normal nutters) who are annoying
little bores who should have a spiky audiophile amplifier shuvved where
the sun don't shine.

Maintain a sense of reality and keep a sense of humour.

PS Don't mention power supplies, DACs, in any posts.

2007-06-19 Thread mudlark

Hi Folks,

And on the eighth day Slim Devices were able to tune the radio
transmitter on their SB3 to make the tea and toast the bread.

Even then the mortals were unhappy and did request the provider to
ensure the SB3 could also help folks to travel back in time and hear
Robert Johnson play live.

Mr Adams let his head drop in dismay and did think that the buggers
will never be happy.

Come on chaps give Mr Adams a break

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] external DAC for Squeezebox

2007-03-07 Thread mudlark

I didn't post last time this came up. I have a Cyrus DACX and PSX-R
which does the digital bits of my SB3. I bought the DACX because it got
good reviews, and because I have a Cyrus Preamp system which i like. Due
to being slightly crippled I need a remote system for best enjoyment.
The DACX is able to collect sound digits from a Cd player, a cd
recorder, a dab tuner and a DVD6 player. This gives me much enjoyment.
I now have a reduced number of interconnects and a very balanced
system. Power amps are Avondale and Quad 303. my speakers are Kef and
wilmslow audio (british kit manufacturer)

The SB3 holds it's own and is now my preferred method of listening to
audio.

A couple of quick questions - slightly OT
 1) Do you find that the PSX-R improves the quality of the DAC-X? I have
2 PSX-R units, but 3 pieces of Cyrus gear that can be used with the
power supplies. I felt the most audible benefit could be obtained while
connecting the PSX-Rs to the CD player and Amp, but couldn't recognize
any appreciable benefit when a PSX-R was connected to the DAC.
 2) Did your DAC-X come with a remote control to switch digital sources?
If not, what do you use as a remote control? I know the RC5 codes are
provided in the manual, but I've never figured how to use them.

 Cheers

1) I have to admit laziness. I haven't gone overboard testing things. I
bought the PSX-Rs because of recommendation. My system is rather
difficult to get to to change cables etc quickly. I am also not very
good at testing as i don't claim to have golden ears. Lots of folks
suggest better power supplies are good even some of those that
think cables can be snake oil. The DAC-X isn't wildly better than my
Arcam 93T. The SB3 and dac is fantastic. My speakers have been an issue
for while, but these current KEFs work well.

2) The DAC-X doesn't come with a remote. I use a programmable philips
device. I can help with how to set the thing up if you wish.

I feel that driving the speakers and type of speaker are important and
of course the technique doesn't work for this part of the system.

I fundamentally worry about the overuse of measurement. I have used pro

certain sounds. Unless you use very sophisticated equipment not
available to the man in the street then ears are always best.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HDCD ripping

2007-02-21 Thread mudlark

Hi,
I don't think you have it correct about HDCD. My understanding is the
tracks are identical, but an area of the disc is used to store extra
info that can be decoded with the correct hardware.

check the Wiki for HDCD

HDCD is a proprietary process, and no accurate technical description
has been released to the public. Hence, none of its claims have any
evidence. In fact, since the technology does not involve compression,
and still allows an audio CD to hold the normal 80 minutes of audio
within 700MB, the additional 4 bits of bit depth it claims to add to
the recording cannot physically exist.

HDCD encoding places a control signal in the least significant bit of
the 16-bit Red Book audio samples (a technique known as in-band
signaling). The HDCD decoder in the consumer's CD player, if present,
responds to the signal. If no decoder is present, the disc will be
played as a regular CD.

In itself, the use of the least significant bit does little to degrade
sound quality on a non-HDCD player (only decreasing the signal-to-noise
ratio by a minuscule amount).

Regards,
M.

The SB sits atop a TEAC dab and a Cyrus PSX-R.

The SB has a HUGE and fantastic linear 3A power supply, this goes to a
Cyrus DAC-X with PSX-R, to a Cyrus PreXvs with PSX-R.

The power amp is an Avondale 260A. The speakers are KEF iQ7s.

The cd player is an Arcam 93, Pioneer PDR509 and Yam tape deck.

The record player is a Rega 3 with Origin Live PSU and modified RB250
and Graham Slee Gram 2SE phono amplifier.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Very interesting article on power leads

2007-02-02 Thread mudlark

I am always interested to see the efforts of these so called expert
hi-fi professionals.

My interest in metal synergy came about when I discovered that it is
the spoon that makes all the difference. The spoon must be made by
specialist spoon craftsmen or women from welsh stainless steel. I found
Sheffield steels to be rather drab and watery in the results. (This has
no relation to the fact that i was born in Lancashire.)

It is also vital that the tea is mixed correctly with milk from Briish
cows and that the tea is stirred only in a clockwise direction in
sympathy with the natural Coriolis effect in the northern hemisphere.

Bloody amateurs.

P.S. I was explaining my ideas to a friend the other day and now I need
advice about how to remove my favorite spoon from where it is very
painfully lodged. Can anyone help?

Dear Adam slim,

I don't think that radio 3 from the web is any good I just mentioned
the fact that the thing was working. Alien BBC is very good for missed
programmes which don't play too well on a dab or via FM.

As far as radio goes my best signal comes from my TV tuner as the 3 FM
radio 3 signals where I live are none too sparkling. On the whole I
feel that i prefer the hills where i live to the joys of the south east
of the UK.

It's all very well for folks to be smug if they have a good FM signal.

As with all purchases, try before you buy.

Chilled,

Adam,

Sorry to be grumpy in my last post.

I used to live in greater manchester where my sugden r51 pulled in
great FM. Here I have great hills, coast, but at the far reaches of the
Manchester signal and between the local transmitters with trees and a
hill. I get cochannel nastiness reflections and weak signal. My dab
comes via a TEAC tuner which doesn't sound too bad for dab. The best
dab i get is via a Humax duovisio set top box with the digital output
running to my Cyrus AV8 and then to a PreXvs and avondale audio power
amp.

Best regards,
Mike.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: How to Improve Sound Quality?

2006-10-16 Thread mudlark

Hi all,

I have used several amps and an interesting check is to bi amp some
speakers. This approach doubles the power available and there are
definate benefits to the sound quality in my opinion but not twice as
good. I listen to the double power system at the same volume as I do
with half the power. I might hear transients better and sustained notes
might be more, well, sustained. There can be no increase in dynamics
unless you turn up the volume. Also I don't live in the middle of a
field and I value my hearing in any case!
enough is enough.

I recently purchased a slimserver for the convenience aspects. Just for

Any comments re my setup?

cheers, however, i was hoping for some comments regarding the sound
quality of my setup.

I currently have the music on the buffalo and copies of the software on
a windows machine and also a lan to a debian machine.

I've just discovered page 12 of the user manual and now i can use my
debian machine to use the server software on the windows machine. Radio
3 for ever. How the heck am i going to find enough time to listen to all
this good music!! I just have to work out how to get alien BBC working
on the Debian machine.

One of the points I was trying to make was that to my untutored ears
the squeezebox, a cheap buffalo and an old machine running debian can
hold its own against an £850 CD player. The hard disc system seems to
restore some timing back into the music,
Thanks,
