I thought about that, but considering that speakers are not just home
decor items :), but also a part of the audio system, I'm concerned that
DIY wide wooden base may introduce resonance problems - unless I put it
on spikes, but then the base has to be strong enough to keep that
enormous weight... not sure it's doable.

You could probably design some sort of wide spaced base using PVC pipe
in about 10 minutes. The pipe could then be filled with concrete,
gravel, sand, lead shot, water, whatever you want to add some weight.
A pair of stands might cost all of $20 to build and take all of an hour
to measure, cut, and glue the pipe. Use schedule 40 PVC water pipe and
there will be no worries about the strength of the structure- I built
my son's loft bed from 2 schedule 40 about 5 years ago and he still
uses it. See it here:

Ahhh... speaker stands. That's what you're going with after all
those great suggestions! (especially liked the cage). Oh well, nice job
NOT missing the forest for the tree :-)

What about, as some suggested, bolting them to the floor/something
heavy. I bet some of the physics guys here could tell us how many ft
lbs/inch it would require to tumble a 45 pound speaker sitting on a
sand filled pillar, but I'll guess not much. A heavier weight and
larger diameter actual base will probably increase the stability
exponentially compared to the filled pillar.

BTW, I won the toothpick bridge building contest in high school physics
class.

Good point about knocking over, I had not thought of that yet. I was
thinking more along the lines of protecting the drivers from fingers,
pencils, food etc.

My cat was sitting listening and obviously noticed the bass driver
moving, sat right up close, watching and listening, and then up came a
paw and 'luckly' gently tapped the center dome (claws in, thank
heavens) Oh there bas a bit of shouting to say the least, and luckly
enough he has not even thought of doing it again.

Screw/clamp them down with wire mesh driver grills ?

I like the monster idea :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help: speakers and kid's safety

2007-05-16 Thread ceejay

My floor standers, like many others, came with a fairly broad base - you
would need to deflect the speakers through a large angle (sorry, not
measured it) before they fell over.

However this will,as you say, entail lots of listening and expense and
even then will only reduce the risk somewhat.

If it were me, I'd be looking for ways to tie down the back of the
stand to the floor (somewhat like the way we tie the top of bookcases
to the wall for much the same reasons). Screw into the floor, a short
strap, and then (the tricky bit) some attachment to the back of the
stand.

You can also reduce the risk of toppling sideways just by placing
objects (eg equipment racks, TVs, CD racks...) beside the speakers.

Whatever, its a compromise. True audio nirvana will only reappear when
the kids are big enough that you don't have to worry about this sort of
thing anymore!

Get a pair of stupidly heavy stands (Target did some), the kind you
can't even pick up - lead shot and so on.

Blu-tac on those would mean kid would need to push the top half of the
speaker very hard indeed, and it would fall away from him.

If you're still unhappy about this, try getting some sort of D-clamp
that you can put underneath, or just bite the bullet and screw some
short fat screws into the bottom of the speakers!

2 suggestions:

Get some concrete stands from a garden supply place. I've got a pair I
used for several years that were extremely heavy, totally inert, and
actually didn't look too bad. Then couple the speakers to the stands
with museum putty or blu-tac. Of course, if he manages to pull these
over, he could be seriously injured.

The safer suggestion (and it might be the best-sounding solution, too)
would be to hang the speakers from the ceiling. Several ways of doing
this, even with a 36-lb speaker. One of the best-sounding systems I've
had used 4 fairly heavy bookshelf speakers hung from the ceiling.

Aren't the M20s already tapped with threaded mounts to allow them to be
mounted on the dedicated Revel stands? The Revel stands are too tippy
for your situation, but a pair of stands that could be bottom weighted
by filling the bottom 1/4 - 1/3 with lead would work well. You could
even bolt the stands to a large wood or stone plinth to further
increase their stability.

safety, and not mere protecting speakers from possible damage, I can't
take a risk to rely on verbal or psychological barriers.

I hope some heavy stands will do the job... Can you advise who's making
suitable stands (large base, sand/lead fillable, etc)? Give me few
names, I'll try to find if they are available here in Canada.

Thanks!!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help: speakers and kid's safety

2007-05-16 Thread GlennT

Our son will be 2 in July, and we haven't had any problems with my
floorstanders (Paradigm Monitor 7). They're pretty heavy though, very
deep, and rather wide, as well as sitting on carpet spikes. My rear
speakers are bookshelves on very tall stands, and those were a big
problem. I never did find a good solution, but he eventually learned
not to touch them. It helped a lot that they are up against the wall,
unlike when they were my fronts.

I'd either buy, or build, hollow stands, and fill them with gravel or
perhaps kitty litter. For shorter stands, I'd probably also fasten the
speakers to the stands. In my case, the speakers themselves were never
an issue, other than stability when shaking the stands, since the
stands are so tall (IOW, he never touched the speakers). I came pretty
close to just shooting some screws through the base of the stands, but
wanted to avoid damaging the hardwood floors hidden under the carpet.
Struts, attached to the wall, were the next option, but he stopped
messing with them.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help: speakers and kid's safety

2007-05-15 Thread 325xi

This is not strictly related to SB, but I'll try anyways...

My system sits in the closet for a while, mainly due to
incompatibility problems between my speakers and my 2 years old kid.
The speakers are nice little monitors Revel m20. Little, but heavy - 45
lbs each, normally sitting on stands. The kid is tall and strong for his
age, and we believe he can push the speaker so it can fall, which would
be very dangerous, for both parties involved.

I'm looking for an idea how to make speakers stable enough so my kid
won't be able to make it fall.

I see two ways to resolve this:
- get large full-range speakers instead of monitors. Cool idea, but
large speaker of similar quality would cost an arm and leg. I also feel
totally unprepared for this - for me it would take months to do all the
listening required to make a decision on such an investment.
- get especially well balanced stands that also allow Revels to be
mounted permanently (screws, or the like - not Blu Tac). I never heard
of such a stands off he shelf; and I don't know if/where such a thing
can be custom made here in Montreal... :(

Please, give me ideas, I want my system back!

Most floor standing speakers don't take too much to knock over either.
My Meridian DSP-5500's weight 180lbs each and it wouldn't take to much
to knock them over. I used to have BW N803 and they were even more
tippy. You'd have to go to some pretty large floor standers to make
them tip proof. Like 802 or DSP-7000's. DSP-7000's are only $29,000.00
a pair :-) Or perhaps some Ariel 10T's.

Do you listen with the kids around or do you have your own space. I
certainly understand you may wish to listen to music and enjoy the kids
in the same space. You may want to have your own space where the kids
are not allowed, but that's not always the right thing either.

I can teach my dogs to stay off the rug. You should be able to teach
a the kids to stay away from the speakers. No don't touch daddies toys
:). Bad dog.

If all else fails bolt them to stands and bolt stands to the floor.

How old are the kids?
