Is this more Trolling? USB cables don't carry analog or audio signals
so it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to sound different! USB stands for
Universal Serial Bus and USB Cables carry DATA, IE Ones and Zeros,
Digital. Not an analog signal in sight. No matter how one designs the
cable as long as its intact, serviceable, and built to the USB
specification, they are ALL the same especially where audio is
concerned because they don't have anything to do with audio.

And of course you don't use USB Cables for Audio because nobody does.
USB is for DATA. And Gordon Rankin is catering to himself and the
people that make money off this kind of tripe. I like his DAC. But
since DACs take a digital signal in (as all DACs do) it just needs any
USB cable.

This whole thread is bizarre.
The only issue here is whether or not your ethernet cable is
accidentally causing a ground loop (only possible with shielded cat -
which is why it should not be used) or if it is providing a pathway for
stray RFI/EMI to enter your DAC - again most likely with shielded cat
(via the ground plane).

The cat is a specification of transmission speed at a given length.
This involves the x-talk as well as the shielding. Most 1 gigabyte

The reason the cable is thicker is that there is a plastic divider down
the length of the cable, to keep the pairs separated.
Because the cable is stiffer as a result of the plastic divider running
down it the plugs have to be slightly heavier duty to cope with it.
The pairs are twisted in a tighter pattern for better RF rejection.
There is no more metal in the cable - the core diameters are the same
 as Cat5e.

Cat5e cable will happily support 1000Mbps over the distance you have
mentioned, and there will be no speed issues involved.
As your Touch will go up to 100Mbps max you have a built in bottleneck.

hey Chris,
no..not psychologically I'd say, I cant see behind my rack, dont really

Hey Chris,

Cat6a turned up, quite a bit thicker that cat5..

I run my Touch from an access point in the listening room which is
connected by 15m of cat5 to my server in the Study.
So the cat6a cable sits between the router and the Touch.*

*this is how the Audiophile mods suggest you have your Touch set up
for best effect, using unscreened cat6a.

Does it make a difference...?

Uhm, as I cant measure it I'm not putting my neck on the line
here...know what I mean?
But If your Touch is set up like mine, can I sugget you do what I did
and fit some UTP Cat6a between router and Touch.
Thats all I'm saying.

As you will see - I'm not as crazy as you may think!

Ok - so I got their digital cable - one the more affordable JPS
offerings. I did notice some improvement in focus and lack of what I
would say is background to the music. Not huge. But significant. I
still think it was a good investment in sound. I will say that the
Hi-Fi Tuning fuse I put in the Transporter had a much bigger bang for
the buck at $30 a pop.

The thing about a power cable is - you buy it once. Thats it. I dont
second guess the cable stuff. I still have the same old Audioquest
Granite speaker cables and I will never replace them. Still have the
same old Silver Audio interconnect. Not because they are that
fantastic. I just don't believe in focusing on cable unless you are
really certifiably crazy with a lot of dough! So - I'm not really THAT
crazy. I also dont have a lot of dough!

difference in sound as far as I could tell. I now use the 25 footers.
If cheap ethernet cable doesnt sound different over big length

think there would be a difference between WIFI and ethernet. At least

The best I've heard yet was some fool (apparently an audio engineer by
profession before dedicating himself to making hi-fi and speaker

system. This despite my protestations that the devices are networked
and the fact that the NAS and Transporter use my home electrical
circuit as a network and are located about 40m apart in entirely
different sections of my home. Needless to say the conversation ended
quickly and I never purchased a sound structure, not the rear wall
speaker mounts for my home theater that caused me to call him in the
first place.
