Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2011-09-23 Thread artintampa

There are several reasons for the Transporter. One of which is that I
own a system that most would consider a bit above average. I want a
piece of equipment that is flexible and yet sounds well/true. I have a
duet that has never satisfied me. The right speaker seems to sound a
bit richer. It will be used for my outdoor sound system. It is much
more conveneint to entertain during the holidays and parties with
Pandora (set it and forget it). As not everyone shares my particular
musical taste (especially very large crowd), it renders my HTPC/music
not practical. I have an HTPC my son built that is hooked up to the TV
and to my stereo system. I have an extensive collection of CD's that I
do not use nearly as much as I'd like to simply because it is easier to
turn on Pandora. Ripping the CD's (which will be FLAC enocded) into my
HTPC would allow me to easily access the music (which now I have to dig
for). The transporter would make changing from CD to CD or Artist to
Artist etc much easier. For convenience reasons, it will be running
Pandora quite a bit of the time (as I do now) but when I want to
sit/relax 'one on one' with my stereo I will be using the HTPC and
Transporter. I previously had issues with my original Transporter I
purchased but Logitech made good on it. I have been reluctant to
purchase any of the alternatives because what I have stated above.

Hello All

My name is Steve, been an audiophile since the ripe ol age of 11 (1973)
when I was bit by the bug. Have had many systems, alot of different
equipment through the years. My current system consist of:

- CEC CD-3300 CD transport
- Benchmark DAC/PRE preamp and DAC
- Parasound HCA-1500A power amp
- Energy Connoisseur C-9 speakers
- Kimber Hero/8TC cabling; Belden 1694A digital cables

I'm a 2-channel fan, and the system above acts as both my music/HT
system. I have a Panny BluRay player and Samsung 50 DLP HDTV.

Though I'm a traditionalist by nature, I also like to stay on top of
emerging technologies. I have been researching for quite awhile the
Squeezebox lineup, but being a very picky listener, I'm skeptical.

The new SQb Touch has peaked my interest lately. I'm lurking/reading
with GREAT interest the developments of the Touch, and it looks
promising. I have begun ripping my cd's with EAC to flac files in
preparation for dipping my toes in the streaming waters.

I look forward to learning alot from you!

2009-10-12 Thread Panotaker

Name is Ralph. I have only really owned one receiver. I bought a Pioneer
SX-1250 brand new back in 1976 and loved the sound then and still love
it now. I sold it in the late 80's and tried different stuff, but bought
another one about 10 years ago and have since recapped it and it plays
and sounds just like new. I have a nice 5.1 system in the living room
(NHT 2.9's), but that old 1250 weighs more by itself than everything in
the 5.1 system put together. I thought about getting something newer,
but I like the looks and sound of the old silver Pioneer. I do have
modern speakers hooked up to it. I have a pair of Onix Mini Stratas,
that are 4 feet tall. I don't know why they named them minis since they
are huge and sound fantastic. I have had a SB3 for a while with a power
supply from an old Zip drive.

Today I decided to order one of the refurbished Transporters. If it
sounds better than the SB3, I will be in heaven. I also have a PS3 for
playing my SACD's and bluray concerts and dvd's. For a CD player, I use
an old Sony DVP-S7000 dvd player which was a reference standard back
when it came out. My turntable is an old Technics SL-1100A.

I don't know how my old gear sounds compared to new modern gear, but I
think I would have to spend a crap load of money to improve it.

Hi, My name is Phoenix and I've been in the high end audio racket since
the 1970's. My musical tastes run to the soft rock groups of that era
(Buffalo Springfield, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Stones, Jackson Brown,
Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, CSNY, Joni Mitcell, as well as classical and in
the last ten years, Jazz.
Over the 30 years I've had this hobby I've owned a number of Classic
components: Large Advents, Bose 901's (the originals and a real
disappointment), Rodgers LS3/5A's, Martin Logan CLS's, and Aerial
Accoustic 10t's (my current speaker. Originally a vinyl freak, I've
owned some true analogue classics as well including the Fidelity
Research FR64s tonearm w' B60 Stabilizer which cost over $1200 in 1979
(ouch), but it's still my current analogue tomearm. Phone cartridges
included the Classic ADC XSM, The Fidelity Research FR-1 Mk 3f, the
Talisman Virtuoso DTi, and the Cardas Heart Ruby (My Current).
Turntables included the original Accoustic Research turntable (still a
great table for someone who wants a cheap analogue rig which will play
well) and a VPI HW-19 Mk 4 with a 20 lb platter, a speed control and a
Vibraplane. I also own a number of tube preanps including the Audible
Illusions Mk 3, and the Harmon Kardon Citation I. My power ams are the
inimitalbe Bel 1001, Mk 5 (two bridged to deliver a rock solit 200 wpc
to anything) with all Nordost SPM cabling.

I got into the Squeezebox because it offered tmy 1000+ albums (cd's)
on a hard drive the size of a small book and playing them back perfectly
to my Benchmark DAC1. It seems like and is the perfect way to listen to
digital audio whic I believe has caught up with analogue audio. I also
use a TACT RCS 2.0 to deliver room and speaker correction. All in all
it sounds great, offers the ultimate in convenience and if I ever decide
to get rid of the analogue side of things, I'm convinced I could live
with a Squuzebox into a Tact into a Benchmark into the Audible Illusion
into the Bel's and the Aerials quite happily.

I know this isn't audiophile but for now it will have to do for me. The
SB3 into a RX v1800 AV Receiver. That goes into a fairly old pair of P5
BW Speakers. All in all I think its a fairly good setup that of course
doesn't quite go into the audiophile range but does give me much
pleasure. My upgrading of my receiver was one of the best things that
I have done. I used to have a Kyrocera audiophile receiver which at
the time was a great receiver. The real difference between it and the
new one was that it didn't have the punch that this new Yamaha has with
the BW's. They really seem to need just a bit more power than the
Kyrocera had. I love music and I'm trying to improve as my pocket book
will allow, which isn't a lot lately. I also like making fun of myself
and others as we embrace the windmills in our own way. Isn't it fun.

Hi!

I was born in 1976.
I am now based in Italy after spending almost 8 years in London, UK.
I am a product designer, but I am currently working in the vehicles'
security field.
For some reasons a I am very often with too little money to fund my
hobbies which include motorcycles (I had a Sì Piaggio, then I rode my
older brother's Gilera RV 125, then had and destroyed a Ducati 900 SS,
now ride a Suzuki DRZ400E through Umbria's and Tuscany's hillside).

I have always had small and micro systems.

I just recently managed to finish off my new systems which I started to
assemble about 18 months ago...

I now listen to:
SqueezeBox 3
Trends Audio TA 10.1 Amp
Klipsch Synergy F2 floorstanding speakers
Chord Company Crimson Interconnect cable
QED XT Silver Anniversary Speaker Cable.

As you will be able to spot, I am always in search for the best
quality/price ratio.
I think I managed to build myself a reasonably decent system for a
decent sum.
Should one day money not be an issue anymore, then yoy'll find me in
Hi-Fi stores more often. ;)

Since playing my SB3, I fould I loved to phisically browse through my
CD collection and now the only thing I see are letters and numbers.
I have to find a solution to this...

This is all for now.

Hi there,

since last weekend I enjoy playing around with my new favourite toy,

Hello everyone.
Although I've only just registered on the forum I've owned a SB3 for
just over a year. My SB3 replaced a PC with a Teratec sound card
connected to a Yamaha AV amp. Then began lots of equipment purchases
including a Musical Fidelity X-DAC v3, X-CAN v3 and X-PSU followed by a
pair of Sennheiser HD600 headphones, Edmund ESI 10 amplifier and most
recently a pair of BW 685 speakers that replaced my 14 year old BW
DM601s then there was various PC components while I attempted to build
a quiet music server.
Thanks to this forum I've managed to rip my CD's using EAC to FLAC and
have a music source that's reliable and easy to use.

Hi, I'm David Ayers and I've just joined the forum.

I suppose I'd better own up from day one, as being the former publisher

My system is basically the same as shown in:

with the following changes:

Speakers: Revel Salons
Interconnect and speaker cabling: Nordost Valhalla
Power cabling:Powersnakes from a mark 1 Hydra

I decided to stump up for a transporter, both for research and to use
in a second system based abroad, and I'm currently eagerly awaiting
it's arrival.

I will be especially interested in its performance stand-alone, and
also through my Trichord Pulsar One DAC (balance digital input).

I have a nasty feeling I may have to buy a second unit to use abroad -
as it has the potential to better my current CD transport. Let's see!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-10-31 Thread pablolie

been here since early 2006. i am an electrical engineer that works on
technology strategy these days, so the hands on stuff, other than
occasional programming, is long gone, and i could design a circuit if
my life depended on it. ;-) i live in the bay area in california, just
20 minutes away from Slim Devices HQ (California traffic permitting).

back in 2006, i added the SB3 to this Accuphase system...
http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=922stc=1d=1140415261

and then began the arduous task of ripping CDs once after the other. i
started off doing it as 256k MP3s, convinced i was just doing it for
convenience and that the subtle (but clearly detectable) differences in
sound between 256k MP3 and FLAC were just important if i truly wanted to
never listen to CDs again. of course, after you discover the utter and
total convenience and power of the method, you need to reconsider. it
took me a year to rip all my favorite jazz and classical CDs to FLACs,
and everything rb, pop or latin goes into a 320k MP3, which is more
than most recordings deserve, imho.

recently, i had to leave my home system behind and go somewhere
lightweight, you can see the little system here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817page=68

and now i have added another SB3 and a acoustic energy aego m system in
the bedroom that provides listening pleasure and also acts as a
fantastic wakeup alarm system.

you have to enjoy -unless you are a snob- how all these things are
truly bringing down the pricepoint at which it is thoroughly enjoyable
to listen to music.

i have been a music fanatic for many years - started collecting
classical and soft jazz and rb and salsa as a teen, taking painstaking
care of my LPs even then (i still have them). as a teenager i got a
little Technics system with small bookshelf speakers when everybody
else was looking for the most power for the least money. as a student
eventually i had Denon stuff around, and got my first good CD player (a
marked down Denon 1290 (seem to remember) eventually, eventually linked
to a Luxman amplifier (relatively entry level). finally i got the
accuphaxse setup pictured above, my dream system, with specially
tuned speakers by a university psychacoustic department. it sounds
great to me, even though it's nowhere near as esoteric as many systems
one sees around here.

at the end of the day, as a passionate (yet relatively mediocre)
percussion and flute player, to me it's about the music, and i will be
very critical when it comes to the sound of percussion instruments. i
own over 2,000 CDs and a couple of hundred LPs, and entered the
downloadable music era a few years ago - but still buymy favorites as
CDs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-10-04 Thread golfdane

Had an education that involved tons of live musical experiences. My
interest for HiFi was spawned when I tweaked my first turntable at the
age of 12 or 13. Had to make it less susceptible to vibrations, so I
made my own floating suspension using rubber bands.
At 14, did I got my first real amp. A set of Luxman C12 and M12. The
source came to be a STD 305M turntable, which I still have. The arm
then, was a SME 3009 Series II. Today it has a Series III arm instead
with an Ortofon MC20II. The amp drove a set of Kef Carlton for some
years, but a kit of Trapez speakers invaded the house. In between
experiences has included Linsley Hood class A DIY amps, and Apogee
DIY's.
The first CD was a Philips CD200.
They lived until the foam selfdestructed due to age. I used a fridge
size SUB containing a 15 JBL driver until my son killed the driver.
The Trapez were replaced by a set of Bowers Wilkins CD1's.
The old Luxman became a frequent guest at the kitchen table trying to
clean pot's and switches until replacing it with Holfi Pre8/Power8 amp
set.
The CD200 was replaced by a Musical Fidelity X-Ray 8 years ago, and has
now been replaced by SB3,X-DACv3,X-PSUv3.
Speakers were replaced by a set of Martin Logan Aerius i's about 6
years ago.

Cables has been a mix of DIY's and stuff. Currently, the interconnects
is Supra ISL's, and the speakercables are MIT's.

The room is about 4.30 cm wide and 6.30 cm long. Speakers are
positioned just about 1m from sidewalls and about 90 cm's from the wall
behind them. Behind speakers are some homemade absorbers.

My hope for the future is a new pair of ML Vantage, driven by an
integrated amp of some sort.

I focus on clarity and presence in sound. I feel the ML's delivers that
in spades, and I really can't see nothing but another set of ML's
replacing my Aerius's.

My Slimserver is an old IBM Intellistation M Pro, with a 500 GB drive.
It needs some more RAM, but works fine. To be replaced by something
with lower power consumption and more RAM.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-06-04 Thread RalphO

I guess that it is about time that I posted an introduction. My name is
Ralph which I supposed you have already guessed.

1. You post about your music experience, your audio experience, what
drives you in this hobby, what brings you to Slim Devices, etc.

I have been a music nutcase since I can remember. I have spent a lot
of time in folk clubs, concert halls etc and play Guitar, Mandolin and
Appelachian Dulcimer, all very badly. I have ripped about 600 CD's to
my PC and I am very slowly working my way through 200 vinyl albums. I
have been pretty into HiFi for years.

What brought me to Slimdevices is a little stranger. I am a Brit
living in the US and I still wanted to get radio from the UK and other
places. The internet and later a squeezebox turned out to be the route
I chose. I then discovered the benefits of storing my music on a hard
disc. Have not looked back since. In fact I am constantly suprprised
at what I can do these days. Tonight I am in a hotel in Mexico City
streaming from my music collection in South Carolina.

2. You post about your current, past, and future (hopefully!) rigs.
Discuss your room, speaker placement, cables, whatever.

As a student (early 80's) I had lots of secondhand gear. When I got a
job and had a few more pennies I wanted to get a better system and took
the opportunity of buying a whole system that a workmate was selling as
he upgraded to a Linn/Naim system. It was my first proper system. The
turntable I cannot remember the name but it had an SME arm, the amp was
a Cambridge A60 and I think the speakers were BW DRM4's. After that
my system went through a lot of changes as I tried different makes like
Tannoy, Tresham (anyone remember?), Audiolab. Todays system has a
Transporter which I prefer to play balanced to a Brystom ST4. The
speakers are Magneplanar MG1.6's, yes I am mosty definitely a
Magneplanar type of person. I still have an Adcom CD player and a
Thorens TD321 turntable. When I bought the Transporter I moved the SB3
to my garden system. That means that I can sit by my Koi pond and
listen to whatever I want.

3. Say something about your audio philosophy. For example, do you
believe in blind testing or not? Why?

Audio philosophy. Listen to more music, all types.

In truth I think that blind testing is just too contrived. Listening
to music is an emotional experience and you have to give it time to
come to conclusions.

4. Say something about what brings you to the forum and what you hope
to get out of it.

I first started coming to this forum just to learn about the device
and the software and I am grateful for all the help others have been to
me. Nowadays I visit the site most days just to see what is going on.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-06-04 Thread mswlogo

1 - Music Experience: I don't play an instrument or can sing a tune.
1 - Audio Experience: I#8217;m not recording engineer.
1 #8211; Hobby Drive: Laziness (tired of flipping CD's w.r.t
SqueezeBox). Home Theater/Enjoy Music (General Music system).
1 - Slim Devices: Heard about it on http://meridianunplugged.com,
figured if it was good enough for those guys it is good enough for me.
I#8217;m also interested in Sonos because of user friendliness (Wife
won#8217;t touch squeezebox).

2 #8211; Past: Lexicon, Krell, BW Nautilus, Matrix (I liked Matrix
Better, hard for me to admit that, but true)
2 #8211; Current: All Meridian, 861V4, DSP-5500 Left, Right, Center,
DSP-33 rears running #8220;Trifield#8221;
2 #8211; Future: Maybe add HDMI Card to 861 for SACD from PS3. Maybe
check out Sonos.
2 - Cables: All stock Meridian Digital Cables. Cables don#8217;t
matter in this setup. Really they don#8217;t.
2 #8211; Room: Untreated living room.
2 #8211; Placement: 3 in front and 2 at sides.

3 #8211; Philosophy: Blind testing, absolutely. Your head can play
more tricks on you than you might ever believe. I also believe in
instantaneous A/B testing (not just blind testing). If it takes more
the 3 seconds to switch, the comparison is a waste of time (not always
easy to do). This is critical for subtle differences (which most
differences are). Testing in the store is completely useless as well
(in home, in your room only, is all that matters).

4 #8211; Brings me here: Ripping tips, real upgrades that actually
help, have not read a one yet that convinced me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-05-28 Thread jbc

Jason - from Canada.

I have a Linn-based system with the emphasis on 2-channel but the
capability to do five. I'm still a fan of vinyl (around 1300 or so
albums) but want to introduce a convenient non-compressed digital
library - hence a USB drive full of flac files and a squeezebox!

Anyhow, here's the current set-up:

Sources:
Linn LP12 turntable (akito 2B/adikt - maple plinth); Graham Slee Era
Gold Mk V phono stage
Linn Unidisk SC universal player/preamp (acts as DAC for SB3)
Slim Devices Squeezebox (wireless)

Power:
Linn AV5125 5-channel amp - 4 channels for active mains
Linn LK85 2-channel amp (for surrounds)

Linn Ninka speakers (with active crossovers in amp)
Linn Trikan centre channel
Linn Classik Unik surrounds (on walls)
Linn Sizmik sub

Hitachi 42HDX99 Director's series Plasma TV

All housed in a BDI avion (highly recommended).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-05-09 Thread el_hefty

I have an insatiable love for music which i have had since i was a wee
tacker. Music is my escape my nirvana.

With a collection of around 3000 cd's and growing 3000 albums and
shrinking (but never to be lost) i was after a better way of playing my
music. The vinyl is a different kettle of fish and i love the ritual
involved, it was more the Cd's on the floor and the room they take up.
also i wanted good quality 'convenient' music i that makes sense.

Being an member of some audio group discussion in Australia the
Squeezebox has come up a few times and i thought it time to
investigate. On the recommendation of a friend and without listening to
one i bought a SB3 and had it modified at Bolder before shipping to
Australia where it has since blown me away.

I joined this forum i guess to keep up with what advancements are going
on and what my next step will be most likely will be guided at some
stage by this forum and the associated products.

My setup is in my signature, im a skeptic when it comes to 'snake oil'
which abounds in HiFi, but each to their own. I also understand that
for me nothing is more important than the music and my passion is
driven by that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2007-02-12 Thread Georgie

My name is Georg and I live in Switzerland. I like all kind of classical
music, jazz, folk and complex rock/pop music.
My cd collection grows and grows so I decided to build a music server,
with synology DS106x disk server, slimserver and sqeezeboxes 3.
After playing around with different file formats I found that the wave
format has still the best quality, followed by the flac format.
Therefore I have two directory structures on my server: one with flac
for the normal use and one with the same pieces in the wave format
for audiophile listening.
I also modified my squeezebox 3 with a new power supply (this is a
different story, I made a lot of experiences with it, please ask if you
are interested in) and a converter from S/Pdif to AES/EBU. From there I
use an Aqvox D/A-Converter and a symmetrical connection to the Stax
SRM-007t and the SR-007 (omega2)earspeaker.
I often got good ideas from this forum, so I decided to introduce
myself.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Personal Introductions: Please Make This a Sticky!

2006-11-29 Thread highdudgeon

This is by way of opening up a thread for personal introductions. Some
of us discussed as a fun method to get to know each other on a more
personal level and hopefully, to defuse some of the knee-jerk
reactions:

The rules so far:

1. You post about your music experience, your audio experience, what
drives you in this hobby, what brings you to Slim Devices, etc.
2. You post about your current, past, and future (hopefully!) rigs.
Discuss your room, speaker placement, cables, whatever.
3. Say something about your audio philosophy. For example, do you
believe in blind testing or not? Why?
4. Say something about what brings you to the forum and what you hope
to get out of it.
5.

highdudgeon

Relax. It's about the music.
