Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
Andy, I agree. I did notice the noise floor(I think I may have mentioned this earlier) of the TP being marginally better than my SB3. Again it was very minimal. This along with maybe a bit of better instrument seperation, was about rhe only differences I could hear. In reality, its pretty amazing what the little $300 SB can do! Who knows someday, I may try another TP in my system as it evolves and becomes even more revealing. Thanks guys for letting me be honest about my findings. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
m1abrams, I have used TrueRTA from trueaudio.com which is a spectrum analyser with sweep generator. A great bit of software, runs on a normal PC and can be set to normalise out any uneven response in PC soundcard to give very good measurement results. You need to buy a reference mike (I bought the behringer) and some type of mixer to provide phantom power for the mike. Having done this, you can drive your system with a sweep, and monitor the room response. It doesn't offer any correction or optimisation features - you have to do all that yourself and see what difference it makes. The krell has a limited set of filters - high pass, low pass, shelf and notch - you can set centre frequency and filter slope. You can have multiple filters on each channel, and each of the 6 channels can have different filters. It is a nightmare to set up, but does make a significant improvement in killing my room boom. The inguz plug in looks very interesting. I will certainly give it a try and report back. Thanks for the link. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
For those who are interested, I tried a little A/B comparison myself over the weekend with the transporter. I have a Krell Showcase / Martin Logan system which uses balanced connections throughout, so it is (relatively) easy to swap bits in and out of the chain - well at least the plugs all fit. Impossible to do a blind A/B as the Mrs wasn't willing to play. In summary, I could tell the difference between the transporter, the SB3 and the Krell DACs, but it was very subtle. I couldn't identify any difference between the digital output of the transporter and the SB3 (wired, not toslink - I dont have a fibre long enough) driving the Krell. Most noticable difference was removing the Krell processor completely and driving the Krell poweramps directly from the transporter. A bit scary with 250W per channel - I had visions of picking bass driver out of my hair. In this configuration, the noise floor was noticably lower - so much so that I thought long and hard about keeping it that way. The Krell processor has an analogue passthrough mode where it shuts down most of the digital innards to minimise noise - using this and the analogue output of the transporter still had noticably more noise than the transporter direct. Guess that is more do do with the analogue stages after the DAC than the DAC itself. So I would rank the DACs in order of my preference - Transporter, Krell, SB3 and I would say the main difference between the Krell and the Transporter was the noise floor. I ended up with my original setup - transporter into Krell processor into Krell poweramp - this was because the Krell has some limited room equalisation capabilities (switched off for the A/B tests), and my room a dreadfull resonance at around 130Hz. So I have the choice of transporter direct into the Krell with its amazingly quiet noise floor (but the room booms) or through the Krell which is doing goodness knows what to the orginal data but does notch out the resonance. -- Andy8421 Andy8421's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16846 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58311 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I tried A/B comparisons between a Naim CD5 and my Transporter a while back and found exactly the same thing - could not hear any difference. However after a period of extended listening over a few weeks I became sure that I just enjoyed the music more through the Transporter. Having discussed this on the Naim forum, most people agree that you need a period of time to mentally adjust to a new source, then see how it emotionally grabs you. I run a Transporter as my only source through a decent Naim pre/power and am very happy. It compares well with far more expensive sources such as the HDX. If you are happy with the SB3, then great, spend the money elsewhere, but a few hours of A/B switching is not enough to really put it through its paces. -- DaveBk DaveBk... My Sony MD deck is an MDS-JB940. Not sure if they all work the same way, but it's very simple to use as a DAC; connect the digital out of your Squeezebox to one of the digital inputs (my deck has two optical and one RCA digital in, so plenty of choice). Eject any MD. Press the record button and select the correct digital input. Hey presto, it is functioning as a DAC. The only other MD deck I owned was an early Sony one, which I lost in a burglary about 11 years ago, so I can't remember if it did the same thing. Easy enough to check though, simply eject disk and press record, see what happens. -- SJobson Mac Mini - Squeezebox 3 - MF X-Dac V8 - MF XT-100 - Spendor S5e SJobson's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58311 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If your experience is like mine, the Transporter stopped my endless upgrade itch. In the past 2 years I have bought 3 different DACs to mate with my SB2, including Benchmark, Lavry and beresford. All left me want for more. To me the Transporter sounds more open and more detailed than all of the above. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
Dacs are funny things. The qualitative change in the sound swapping around DACs is nowhere near as great as changing your speakers, or even repositoning them. Many causual hifi users cannot distinguish between dacs and many audiophiles could not distuinguish between dacs when used with anything but reasonably high end hifi equipment. That said, the apparently very small difference in sound exchanging a dac can make can determine whether the music sounds good or not, whether you tap your foot or not. It's almost more of an emotional thing. Whether this is due to jitter or not I have no idea. That said, the sound of the Tranporter is very removed from the sound of the sb3. The difference should be immediately obvious if the hifi gear you are using is good quality and transparent. It cannot be said whether this difference is solely due to the dac though (in fact, it's certain it is not). Whether you prefer the sound of the Transporter over the SB3 depends upon which device makes makes you tap your foot more vigorously. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
While I've not heard a Transporter, it is readily apparent that DACs do not all sound the same. My SB3 sounded better using my old Sony MD deck as a DAC, and really excellent through my current Musical Fidelity X-DAC V8. I'm sure it will be quite apparent whether the Transporter sounds better than the SB3. Interesting thoughts. I would have thought some of the replies would have been the opposite. Truly I do hope to notice a difference (hopefully improvement) when the transporter arrives. I just was more intimidated by all the folks who feel strongly that DAC's are all the same. Any more thoughts from either side of the fence:) Enjoy your weekend! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
DACs definately do not sound the same, and the transporter should be significantlty better than what you currently have. However, you should be aware that the differences between DACs can actually be quite subtle and something you tend to notice more over a period of time rather than something that jumps out at you immediatly. If there is a striking difference, then it is likely that one of them is doing something wrong. In my opinion though, a better source is definatly worth persuing, as although the differences can be much more subtle than something like a change in speakers, over time they seem to be just as, if not more important, in creating an enjoyable sound. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58311 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Considering which parts of the replay chain introduce the most distortion, a fairly decent DAC will not add very much at all compared to the rest. Anyone can form impressions of sources and of course I believe I've heard some genuine differences. But I have experienced my impressions suddenly changing when an accomplice withholds the identity of the source. Whether I listen short or long the ideal would be for me not to know what source I'm listening to, and to form impressions that way. This may sound tricky but I think it's possible - I have a few ideas! Any more thoughts from either side of the fence:) Depending on how much of a believer in Jitter you are, the DAC internal to the Transporter will have another advantage to an external DAC: you won't need all the transcievers. Taking a digital electrical output and converting it to optical, sending it down a wire, and then converting the light back into electricity is going to insert some level of jitter into things. LED's don't switch instantly: they switch fast, but not instant. You have the same problem with a coax connection, it isn't just about light, but about the need to use additional circuitry at both ends of the wire or fiber. Removing those components will certainly affect the DACs ability to avoid jitter. (And, yes, I know many high end dacs have jitter-reduction circuits..) Whether you hear it or not, well, that's another question. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58311 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Darren Good to know, thanks! If there is some measureable difference(in a good way), I will be very happy /impressed. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3
Hello all, I have been very happy with my current SB3 since i got it in the fall. I fell upon an opportunity to pick up a reasonably priced Transporter to replace the SB3. My situation is this, I read and read that one group of people believe a better DAC will be noticeable in a mid-upper level system, while others believe a DAC is a DAC, they all do the same and sound the same. I plan to test both while there in my setup but i am seeking some opinions. As a reference point my setup is this: Ascend Sierras for main speakers Proceed Amp3 for fronts Proceed Preamp Oppo 980 SB3 The oppo SB3 DAC's are in use due to the analog preamp. So ultimately I am wondering will the Transporter be an improvement over the DAC's in each of my current pieces being it can use its own for streaming files other digital inputs. I just wanted to hear some thoughts before it arrives. Thanks guys!
