Closer examination reveals it to be an ES-56 Nymph. It looks like it's in reasonable condition, when viewed from outside the glass frontage. Looks like a bit of water has dripped onto the port wing near the root, but other than that it looks kinda pristine. I mention this because the furniture shop has a RELOCATION SALE - 50% OFF! banner in the window, and I wonder whether the new location is equipped for aircraft storage. If it isn't, what's going to happen to the Nymph? In the interval, there have been some very considered responses from other members of this forum. In your initial response I think you really missed the point that Derek made, and which I fully supported. Derek basically said that very useful X/C training can be done in a K13 performance type glider, even in this day when Duo's and DG 1000's are available in an increasing number of clubs. Please note exactly what Derek added (but don't go too far : ) And that is the very crux of the matter. The training has to be conducted within the performance envelope of the glider being used, and the conditions on the day. You seem to be saying that conditions are so bad at your home airfield - Bacchus Marsh - that (most times), you fully expect to be in a paddock if you attempt a X/C flight in a K13 from your airfield. ?? Most clubs have a milk run 100 k triangle that early X/C pilots can attempt. Usually the pilot is never more than 20 or 30 km from base. I suggest to you that on an average Oz day at Bacchus Marsh, not even a K13 is going to be out of range of the home base for very long on such a task. BTW, I know that 750 k flights have been done out of BM. Maybe the first or second ever done in Australia? Useful X/C training does NOT require the use of State of the Art gliders. Question: Does anybody have an idea as to the max distance a K13/Blanik has flown in Australia? I seem to recall that a Blanik once held a World Record with a distance flight of over 800 k. Richard Frawley, I am staggered after reading your post. Just as Derek covered the early training situation in a low (by current standards), performance glider in one line , you seem to have covered in a very few words, the entire guts of the situation. Well done indeed. I suggest to the GFA Board that your post is incorporated (spelling aside), into the relevant GFA manual. On a lazy Sunday afternoon I'm happy to embark on a cross country coaching flight in our Duo as I expect to be back in time for a refreshing drink and still return to my home at a christian time. With an ASK 13 and an crappy old trailer I expect to outland, spend three hours in a fly blown paddock and then 2 hour in the dark to put the glider into a crappy old trailer, return to the airfield around mid night and be in my bed earliest 1 am Monday. Besides all that I inflict the same fate on at least 3 other fellow club members. N.B. - a flight within gliding range of an ASK 13 to the aerodrome does not qualify as a x-country coaching flight. At best it represents some thermalling practice. To conclude a couple of personal questions, which you don't have to answer if you prefer not to: How many cross country coaching flights have you conducted over the last 24 months? How many of those were in an ASK 13 or similar performance glider? How many of these gliders had a crappy old trailer? How many ended in an out landing? Come to think of it - how many out landings did you do last 24 months? To out myself - I have done 4 or 5 pre-arranged training ones and none in anger. I'm hopeful that this afternoons NSW RASP automated run will be successful; should be complete by 1815. I have manually run regions NEWSOUTHWALES, CAMDEN and JWGC and they seem OK now. Re: [Aus-soaring] Contact lenses, laser surgery etc
Hi DMcD, thanks for the comments. However, as stated in the first sentence of my original post, I already have bifocal sunglasses, and they work very well. I am always acutely aware of the fact that should I lose them, break them, drop them in the drink, etc. etc. I am up for an expensive replacement and a long wait for same. The conversation with my friend re laser surgery prompted me to investigate contact lenses as my thinking was that perhaps I could wear multifocal contacts (or even bifocal contacts) and use off the shelf sunglasses when flying, driving and fishing. Thus should any of the afore mentioned misfortunes occur, I could simply buy/borrow/beg/steal another set of sunglasses at short notice. I have an appointment with a local optometrist who is a member of the Cornea and Contact lens Society of Australia so maybe they can assess my vision and come up with a suitable product, we will see. As far as laser surgery goes, the option most suitable for me (monovision) is apparently not suitable for pilots as it reduces depth perception so I have ruled that out. Re: [Aus-soaring] Contact lenses, laser surgery etc
Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated. Like Niall I have used reading glasses since my early 40's but only in the last year felt I needed help with long distance as well. I also used to use regular sunglasses with stick-on lenses for close up work (tying knots when fishing, reading PDA's etc when flying). I'd be happy to return to that scenario if I could. I'll have a chat with my optometrist. One further complication is that I swim shower or cycle shower nearly every lunchtime. Contacts don't sound so good in that case. Can o' worms. [Aus-soaring] Contact lenses, laser surgery etc
For a year or so now I have been using bi-focal glasses for driving at night, and the same prescription in sunglasses for flying, fly fishing and driving on sunny days. On a recent fishing trip to a remote Pacific atoll I spoke to a guy who had had laser eye surgery to correct his long sightedness who was very happy with the results. On my return, I did some research and noted that the laser surgeons reccommend using contact lenses before having the surgery to check how you will respond to having 'monovision'. I then did some more reading on contact lenses and was happy to read that they are available in various bifocal configurations (see http://www.allaboutvision.com/over40/multifocalcls.htm ) I am now interested in perhaps getting contact lenses (cheaper than laser surgery) and then being able to choose from a much bigger (and potentially cheaper) range of regular sunglasses. Has anyone taken this route? I would be interested to hear your comments. Thanks, Bernie. PS I also have 'reading glasses' for reading and computer, but can't see the TV properly with either those or the driving glasses. Not to mention my workshop glasses, and $2 knot tying glasses for fishing when I can't afford to drop my proper glasses. - No virus found in this message. Re: [Aus-soaring] New Hi-Res RASP for Temora and Narromine areas
Thanks to feedback from the contest director of the World Hang Gliding championships at Forbes, I have discovered an error I made when setting up these two new regions. Specifically, the Land Surface Model specified was incorrect and consequently the hi-res Temora and Narromine maps were significantly more conservative than the lo-res NSW maps. This has now been corrected; and this afternoons output is now more similar to the NSW maps. At least the Narromine run is; the Temora run wont be finished until after 7 PM. Run completion times are: Morning runs: NSW5 AM Narromine 6 AM Temora 7 AM Afternoon runs: NSW5 PM Narromine 6 PM Temora 7 PM Regards, Bernie. Hi all, I have added two new RASP areas to the NSW RASP ; Temora and Narromine. Still in the testing stage, and only work for the 'Current' forecast period but these maps are at 6Km resolution compared to the full NSW maps at 12Km. Takes a lot more computing time, hence they cover a smaller area but they overlap and cover most if not all of the typical tasking areas. They run twice daily so you get an evening forecast and an updated forecast in the morning. The colour scale on some maps differs from the NSW maps but that will be fixed after this afternoons run. Let me know how they go.Available on the Univiewer and RASPtable interfaces at: http://blipmap.walsys.net/TABLE/NEWSOUTHWALES/FCST/index.html If it doesn't work for you (especially RASPtable) it's possible you may need to delete any existing cookies for 'blipmap.walsys' then refesh your browser. My next step is to integrate it into the ASH. Mounting it is easy, getting a 5V power supply to it sounds easy, but what I'd like to do is to create an interface that takes power from the glider's 12V system, and the data output from the Flarm, and turns them into an input acceptable to the Nexus. Any advice? Re: [Aus-soaring] Nexus 7 Integration with Flarm, 12V supply
There is a device called a k6-mux that is programmable to do what you needThe K6-mux is a multiplexer which combines data streams from multiple devices (Flarm, vario). It still has serial output, OK for PDA's but not Android/USB devices. Some people use the K6 BT (Bluetooth) device but then you still need to power the Nexus/Android device somehow.http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/k6.htm ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

Re: [Aus-soaring] No RASP data?
The problem is that the plotting software needs an upgrade, the RASP administrator for Aus-RASP needs to download and install the latest NCL tarball from Dr Jack. If you are in NSW or SA you are sweet as those States still provide independent RASP instances: http://blipmap.walsys.net/TABLE/NEWSOUTHWALES/FCST/index.html http://www.users.on.net/~dsg/HG/UniViewer.html ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

[Aus-soaring] Small change to the NSW RASP Blipmaps
FYI: A small change to the NSW Blipmaps: A stipple (ie, dots) has been added to the Cu Cloudbase where CuPotential 0 blipmap to provide an indication of the variability of the cloud forecast instead of simply presenting a simple yes or no cloud forecast. It may be quite useful for us to be able to see the areas where the model says there is almost clouds (in the uncoloured regions) as well as where there is barely clouds (in the colored area). The OD Cloudbase where ODpotential0 map has also had this feature added. [Aus-soaring] Added features on NSW Blipmaps
I've added some new functionality to the NSW Blipmaps at http://blipmap.walsys.net/UNI/univiewer.html (Univiewer version only). You will see two new check boxes for 'popups', called SkewT and BlipSpot. (If you cant see them, hit 'Shift+Reload' to reload the page). Select one or the other, not both! Put the cursor anywhere on the map (any map), left click, and you will get a SkewT chart for that location, or Blipspot data which is the data for that point in tabular form. [Aus-soaring] Silicon free polishes?
Hello folks, it's Form 2 time and we plan to give our LS1-f a bit of a buff and polish. A product called NuFinish was recommended, however a quick Google search finds that it contains silicon and I understand that this is not a good thing should any future repairs be required. Is this correct, or is silicon getting a bad rap? Our club has used a Meguiars marine product called M4516 High Gloss Polish, I am led to believe that this contains no silicon but have yet to confirm that. See http://www.meguiars.com.au/productdetail_2006.php?seq=9category=SPECIALTYsubcat=Marine%20Caresubsubcat=Polish%20and%20Protectshow=3 Can anyone speak with authority on this subject? Any other products that I should know about? The gel coat is in good condition, it was machine buffed last year and shows little if any oxidisation to my untrained eye. I imagine a quick polish followed by a wax would be sufficient, so the Meguiars marine products are looking good: http://www.meguiars.com.au/product_2006.php?category=SPECIALTYsubcat=Marine Caresubsubcat=Polish Thanks, Bernie. ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soaring@lists.internode.on.net To check or change subscription details, visit: http://lists.internode.on.net/mailman/listinfo/aus-soaring

[Aus-soaring] 2 day NSW RASP Blipmaps forecasts now available ......
I have implemented 'Current+1' processing on the NSW Blipmaps - which means that in the evening after, say, 1800 you can see a forecast for tomorrow AND the day after... great for planning your weekend away. Saturday is looking good at this stage! Temporarily (probably permanently) at http://blipmap.walsys.net/UNI/univiewer.html (and only available via the Univiewer interface). The 'Current+1' forecast utilises AVN (low res) data, rather than the usual GFS (high res) data. See http://www.drjack.info/twiki/bin/view/RASPop/GFSvsAVN for more details. Re: [Aus-soaring] New Australian gliding forum
Hi AJ, yes, the Darling Downs forum was the inspiration for this one, and I plagiarised their category headings. I hope they take that as a compliment and not an insult. I saw their site as aimed at DDSC members, not an Australian audience, and hope I didn't offend anyone. Headings can be easily changed. The new forum is intended to be an adjunct to existing forms of communication methods; it will sink or swim on it's merits like previous forums mentioned. [Aus-soaring] Dr Jacks blipmaps and RASP (Regional Atmospheric Soaring Predictions) for NSW
Hi Folks, I have just installed RASP (Dr Jacks blipmaps) for NSW : http://blipmap.walsys.net/NEWSOUTHWALES/ The installation is still in the testing stage but appears OK apart from the soundings. (The Camden sounding works, but Temora and Narromine don't yet). On the graphics, location 1 is Camden, 2 is Temora, and 3 is Narromine (the numbers are in white and hard to see, but they are there). RASP is installed on a server owned by a non-pilot friend; it chews up about 9GB of his download allowance every month, and utilises 100% CPU for about 4-5 hours per day. Consequently it could disappear at any time, should it impact his web server. My thanks to Johnny Wharington for his invaluable assistance, and Dr Jack Glendinning for the free distribution of RASP. [Aus-soaring] New Australian hang gliding distance record: 456 KM
With the World hang gliding championships about to begin at Hay, Rohan Holtkamp flies from Hay to Bathurst (456 KM) . With the World record at over 700 KM, seems it's only a matter of time before 500 Km falls in Australia. Not bad for performance less than a Grunau Baby. http://www.davisstraub.com/OZ/9.005#0 As we walk into the Worlds Headquarters (Wednesday evening) Rohan Holtkamp (Worlds organizer) on an Airborne Climax C2-13 is on the phone. He landed just before 8 PM having set the new Australian distance record of 456 kilometers. He launched at 11 AM on a very windy day here in Hay (it's been windy for the past three days - we wouldn't have held the contest on these days). When he launched the sky was dark with thick low clouds at about 2,000'. It didn't start breaking up here until about 1:30 PM. Launches were difficult due to the strong winds.Rohan was just short of 300 miles when he was stopped by forests and mountains to our east. He came back the next day.Jonny launched at 8:30 AM when he previously set the record from Beechmont in Queensland earlier this summer (http://ozreport.com/toc.php?8.221#0) .
