Re: [Aus-soaring] RASP issues

2015-01-19 Thread Bernie Baer

Hi Bernie,
I was wondering what has happened to the blipmap version developed by
Morgan Sandercock which animated the program. I found it useful and easy to
use, but it doesn't seem to be on the web any more.

Hi Glenn,
it's there, linked to from the NSW RASP home page:

You probably have the old URL bookmarked; NSW RASP moved to new servers a
year or so back.

We did the unthinkable by using the latest beta version of window.com and
whatever was left of BOM and NAIPS and we managed to fly this weekend -
even without computerised soaring weather predictions.

Excellent!

I went out to Bacchus Marsh yesterday, just thinking to do some maintenance.

I took a flight with Rob Hocking, which did not last very long, but was
quite interesting. In fact memorable in some ways. It is not just about
soaring but also learning about possibilities and new skills.

 Lucky buggers.

Many of our tech savvy club members went to the well known site…

 http://www.lookoutthewindow.com

which shows alpine conditions and snow prevailing… and they stayed
 home in droves.

Perhaps the .au version should be started to give locals a chance at
flying when all their other senses have decayed through lack of use.

It’s still using 0.5 degree data for the time being (but in the new

before switching to the 0.25 degree data.

Testing will be done on the JWGC region.

I am not sure if this is actually legal - but hey it was fun!
One of our club members was even able to give us a very precise predicted
soarable thermal top altitude - no animals where harmed in the process!
I am going to look on eBay for a sextant so I will be prepared when GPS
plays up.
What a lovely soaring weekend it was..

I understand part of the upgrades was increasing the resolution of the seed

That's correct, the change was from 0.5 degree grid to 0.25 degree grid
resolution. That should improve forecast accuracy, but may also increase
 computer run times significantly.
Some of the detail of the change was not distributed widely and early
enough; also many RASP admins were on holiday (maybe even flying!).

 NOAA changed the format.

Correct, NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) is part of
