Re: [Axapta-Knowledge-Village] Split SQL table into multi drive partition

2005-06-06 Thread SAS

Dear Madhur,
thank you very much for your response , I wan to do
this it's because , we want to add more disk on database sql server , since our
sql database running on windows cluster environtment , so we can not just add
that new disk into old array , because on cluster environtment the disk should
be basic can not dynamic disk , on the other hand if we want to add disk , the
disk type configuration should dynamic disk , otherwise we have to scratch
existing disk and the create a new partition .
thx

Split SQL table into multi drive partition

  Hi SAS,

This is possible. But please confirm why you want to do this. Normally
partitioning is done to improve database performance. The tables you want to
place on the newly created X Drive what purpose will they serve.

Anyways, after confirming please follow the steps:

The first thing you will have to do is create filegroups. That means you
will have to create secondary files within the database. The file extention
  will be .ndf by default.

You can do this in Enterprise Manager. Go to the properties of the
database and in the data files tab add a new entry just below the primary
  filegroup row.

  For eg:
  1. FileName (This can be anything but follow a naming convention)2.
Location (Give the location on your new X Drive)3. Space Allocated (as per
your requirements)4. Filegroup (Give a new name to this filegroup. Again
  follow a naming convention)

Clicking on ok will create a filegroup on your new X Drive. You can cross
check by looking for the file you just created on the X Drive.

Now select the table that you want to move to this filegroup, i.e. on X
Drive. Right Click on this table and select Design Table.
Right Click any cloumn and click on properties from the context
  menu.
On the tables tab, select the newly created filegroup in the Table
  Filegroup combo box.

This will move the table to the newly created filegroup on X Drive.
Try this out first on a temporary database and then apply on the live
  Axapta database.

Revert in case you need any clarifications.

  Thanks and RegardsMadhurSAS

We have 198000 transactions on InventTrans for the calculated month.

  Hi Sas

  The hardware
looks good to me, away from the RAID 5 for the database. RAID 5 does not
give good performance for writing since it involves the calculation of
parity. I made a mistake in my first email to you. We do not use RAID 15
but RAID 10. RAID 15 also involves parity. It is a combination of RAID 10
and RAID 5. RAID 10 is a combination of RAID 1 (mirror) and RAID 0
  (striped). You
only use 50% of your storage but you get good performance for
  writing.

  Did you configure windows and
SQL to see 3G of memory and over? There are some tools that you can use to
find the exact problem. They are costly but they work. Spotlight for SQL
and windows work well. It shows up all the flaws. Our consultant used it
to solve our problems and we are currently in the process of purchasing
the software. Sometimes the log file disk could be running out of space
and you dont know and this slows down the entire system. The problems are
  endless and many.

The code could very well be a
problem too. Have you done a lot of customization? If this is the case you
may have code that is inefficient. SAS

  Hi
  Rocco

  If disk queue and swapping
are acceptable for the object server during peak periods this should
be an indication that the object server(s)is ok. We had 1G of
memory and two Pentium III processors in two object servers. The disk
queue was high as a result of the processors not being able to
adequately manage the requests from the clients. Also, there was a lot
of swapping resulting from the memory not being enough. For some
reason this resulted in the database locking

AOS on SQL server Cluster problem

  Hi Sas,

We had the same problem. This results from a timeout of the Axapta
application. The application has a limited timeout period to wait on the
database and when that period is exceeded the application will fail. The time
that the resources take to switch from one server to the next is a function of
the load on the server at the time of failure. The smaller the load is the
  quicker the switch.

The only way you may get around this problem is to use the
active-active mode of the clustering for SQL. At the moment you are using
active-passive. From the materials I have read for SQL I understand that the
active-active mode is more complicated. The overall performance will be better
because the resources are shared across both servers and if one server goes
down the other will carry the load provided that the resources being used at
the time of failure are less than or equal to the resources available on the
up server. Performance will degrade after failure since one server will be
  carrying the load.

The only form of clustering available for the application server is
load balancing which is also a part of the OS as in the case of SQL
clustering. In this case the application is central to both AOS. The AOS is
not the application as many people may believe. It is a windows service that
loads the application and makes the necessary connections to the database for
the client(s). With the application files in a central location you setup both
AOS to load the files from that location so that all clients will see the same
application. In the case of a failure of one of the AOS the client(s) on that
AOS will loose connection. All incomplete transactions will be rolled back and
the client(s) just need to restart the program to regain access. In order for
this kind of clustering to take place you have to type “-cluster=clutername”
in the advanced text box on both AOS and also type the same thing in the
advanced text box for each client’s configuration. When you have done this the
OS will and ensure that each AOS has half of the connections as users connect
and disconnect. In other words a new connection will always be made to the AOS
with the lease connections. If both AOS have the same number of connections I
do not know how the system decide which one should get the next
  connection.

Re: [Axapta-Knowledge-Village] how to minimize blocking on axapta ?

2005-03-06 Thread SAS

Dear Verden ,
In my opinion , as long as the disk performance is
not bottle neck ( ex. Avg disk queue lenght= 2 X number disk )
it is not necessary to modify raid configuration.
for memory , we already enabled AWE memory
.
thx

  Hi Sas

  The hardware looks
good to me, away from the RAID 5 for the database. RAID 5 does not give good
performance for writing since it involves the calculation of parity. I made a
mistake in my first email to you. We do not use RAID 15 but RAID 10. RAID 15
also involves parity. It is a combination of RAID 10 and RAID 5. RAID 10 is a
combination of RAID 1 (mirror) and RAID 0 (striped). You only use 50% of your
storage but you get good performance for writing.

Did you configure windows and SQL
to see 3G of memory and over? There are some tools that you can use to find
the exact problem. They are costly but they work. Spotlight for SQL and
windows work well. It shows up all the flaws. Our consultant used it to solve
our problems and we are currently in the process of purchasing the software.
Sometimes the log file disk could be running out of space and you don’t know
and this slows down the entire system. The problems are endless and
  many.

The code could very well be a
problem too. Have you done a lot of customization? If this is the case you may
have code that is inefficient. SAS

Dear Verden,
my Hadrware configuration , Database server , 4
Proccessor 3.0 Ghz , 8 GB RAM , Quorum : 2 Disk raid 1, Tempdb 2 Disk
raid 1 , database 7 Disk Raid 5 , all disk are Fibre channel 2 Gb disk
15K rpm. For application server 2 Proccessor 3.0 Ghz , 2 GB RAM
.Concurent user 70 users.
I tought my hardware configuration are enough
,So I suspect it's bacuse our coding .
my experience tuning hardware , OSand
SQL server only give 10% improvement, table indexing also improve the
performance . and now we are investigating our coding.
thx
sas

  Hi Rocco

If disk queue and swapping are
acceptable for the object server during peak periods this should be an
indication that the object server(s)is ok. We had 1G of memory and
two Pentium III processors in two object servers. The disk queue was high
as a result of the processors not being able to adequately manage the
requests from the clients. Also, there was a lot of swapping resulting
from the memory not being enough. For some reason this resulted in the
  database locking up.Rocco Giumelli

Hi Varden

Can I ask, We have recently upgraded our SQL
Server, But the application server we didn't becasue when I look at the
task manager the machine does not do much, systemidle is running
90% + , and the Networkwork interface runs at less than 10% on 100 link
most of the time. Has Scsi Hard Drive. It indicates to me that an
upgrade is not needed.. Would you agree?

The two main things I know can
affect blocking are hardware and code.

I have experienced major blocking as a
result of hardware. I understand the technical concept involved but I do
not have all the details at hand.

You can use one server as the application
and database server but this may not be ideal for your situation. The
best configuration for top performance is at least one database server
with a SAN unit for the data and an application server that may also be
the object server if you are going 3-Tier. You may optionally use a
different server for the object server. One object server should be
adequate for up to one hundred users. Over that you may use two in load
balancing mode.

Now blocking can be a result of the
existence of a bottle neck with your hardware. The client in a 2-tier
configuration and the object server in a 3-tier configuration
