[AZORES-Genealogy] AZORES BOOK THROUGH DENNIS BORGES

2009-03-30 Thread Family History

I have talked with Dennis Borges. He has been out of town all weekend
and got in late last night. He has about six copies of the book. He
said that U C Berkeley should be making the book available and he can
talk with them about online ordering for those interested.

I will talk with him more about making the copies he has available
first come first served. NO PROMISE ON THESE AS YET. I am guessing
that it would be $20 plus shipping and insurance, maybe add another
five dollars to the $20. This is a GUESS as I have never done this
before but want to help. I will talk with Dennis more as we were both
in a hurry. I will try to get one copy and post online the table of
contents and the index if people say via the list they want to see
that.

I had asked people to respond to my private email and maybe there is
confusion about doing that, so Cheri I hope that it is okay about
peole just sending to the list if they are not sure how to email me
privately.

If you want one copy or more, let me know how many copies you want. Or
if you want to wait to see the info from the book, that is fine. If I
get the copies Dennis has, it will be first come, first served to who
has already emailed me, with one book only to the first responders I
have already received.

It does not seem to be a problem to get one, so do not be concerned it
you were not among the first five. I have no idea when UC Berkeley
will have copies as Dennis was not sure.

Again, I know nothing about this book and am doing this as a help to
the list. I do not live in Tulare and it is a hike from where I live.

I WILL BE GONE ALL DAY BUT WILL CHECK THE LIST LATER TODAY ABOUT 5 PM
PACIFIC TIME.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Luiz (Lewis) Family from Faial and research trip

2009-03-30 Thread Deanna Fenton

Hello! I am new to this group and am looking for some information in
preparation to a long anticipated trip to the Azores!

My maternal grandfather was Jose Duarte Luiz (Joseph D. Lewis) who was
born in Flamengos, Faial on May 5, 1889. His father's name was Antone
Duarte Luiz. They came to the US through Ellis Island on April 13,
1903. The rest of the family (mother and 5 sibilings) arrived a few
years later. They lived in the Centerville area of Fremont.

I will be visiting the island of Faial at the end of April and would
like to see if I could find out any more about the family, especially
about his mother. I have almost no information about her, other than
her name was Maria. I do not know her maiden name. I was hoping to see
if I could find any church records of my grandfather's birth or his
parent's marriage.

I have found out that the Family History Center has microfilmed the
records for a church in Flamengos. I called the local center and they
were very helpful in trying to assist me in finding some of the
information through their portal, but I wasn't too successful in
finding out anything new. I am going to call them again to order the
records, but I am not sure how quickly they will come.

I would also like to find out information about my maternal
grandmother's family, the Perreira's (Perry). Mary Perry Lewis was
born in California on August 20, 1896, but family lore implies that
her parents and my grandfather's parents were friends in the Azores
and when the Luiz family came to the US, they were "sponsored" by Jao
and Mariana (Marian) Perriera. Marian's maiden name is recorded as
Lewis on my grandmother's death certificate and both her and Jao's
birthplace is listed as the Azores.

If anyone has any information on these surnames or suggestions about
researching in Faial, I would greatly appreciate it!

Yes, Carolyn, the Madeiran ones were filmed.

They can be ordered through your local Family History Center (FHC). It covers
7 rolls of film. You'll want to order the film that covers your year(s) only.

You'll have to copy and paste this link together:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=38186&disp=Documentos+civis+do+Distrito+de+Funchal++

Or try the TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/ch687s

There is a partial index, however it doesn't cover all the years, nor was it
filmed.
Cut and paste again:

Or try the TinyURL: http://tinyurl.com/dzrm2s

For those who are grumbling about "copy, cut and paste", here's some URLs to
help you:

Yes, I am researching the Mattos family form Sao Jorge.

My Great Grandmother was Mary Mattos (Borba) from Sao Jorge. He daughter,
Rose (Soares) Coehlo told me Mary had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. Four
brothers came to the USA and 3 stayed in Sao Jorge. The brothers who came
here were: Frank, Tony, John (who started the Festa in Gustine) and one
other who's name I don't have right now - possibly George.

In Sao Jorge, there were maybe two brother with the same first name of
Manual with two different initials she thought. The third brother was
Theodore Matos who was a Professor. I also have a note of Professor in
Calhetta?. Anyhow, one brother was disabled of sort with a huntched back -
they said from an accident playing a game like leap frog. He was the
Professor and when to Lisbon. He also married a Professor and I believe
they have a son who's a Professor or possible the brother who's the
professor is still alive. I received an email from a list person saying
that they knew this Professor, so maybe he's still alive.

Another brother was a police chief in Sao Jorge.

Back to the USA - My Great-Grandmother's brothers were also Tony and George
possibly of Gustine. Tony we believe had 6 boys and 1 girl. Then I have
notes of someone called "Peanuts" - meaning one of the brothers.

Other notes indicated: Three brothers married 3 sisters. Clarence, Jack
and Tony. Now these could be children of Mary's brothers I don't know
.. I
do know that Clarence lived in West Sacramento and was close to my
Grandfather Lawrence.

Hopefully some of this information may be of assistance. I have not had the

chance to research any of this information. Several weeks ago we went to
Newman and then stopped in Turlock and visited with Aunt Rose. This is
where I obtained all this information, but have yet to research any of it or

input it into Ancestry yet.

Let me know what you think.
Thank you,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Luiz (Lewis) Family from Faial and research trip

2009-03-30 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Deanna,

You'd have to check at your FHC, but a month for films to come in may be
cutting it close. The record you are after has been filmed.

To do research for Flamengos, you'd go to the Archive in Horta, on Faial.
They hold the records for Faial, Pico, Corvo, and Flores.

You'll need to request the book of baptisms for 1889, Flamengos. I haven't
been to the archives in Horta, but if it's like the other 2 archives, you
will fill out a slip of paper (your name, book requested, and year), and the
librarian will get it. (Kind of reminds me when you want a magazine from a
year or two ago in the American library systemyou fill out the paper and
the pages will go in the back and retrieve it). You'll have to scan the May
1889 ones looking for all Jose's being baptised. The first sentence (around
that 1889 time period) usually starts off by stating the BAPTISM date, not
the birth date. A sample of the records can be found here (scroll down):
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html

In the 1889 time period (kind of around 1850s onwards), you will find that
the baptisms say, Jose, son of Antonio Duart Luiz and Maria de Jesus (or
Maria religious middle name). Women didn't use surnames during that time
period. Many people get frustrated with this, especially if you are
researching records on this end, looking for the village (lucky you, you
have it!!) American death records (someone tell me if the Candian ones are
the same) ask for the name and birth place of the father. The informant
states this many times. But the next question asks for MAIDEN name of the
mother (and birth place). Since Portuguese women didn't use surnames, the
answer is "don't know" which gets recorded on the death record. The
informant knew (in many instances) the first and middle names of the mother,
but that's not what is being asked of them.

The 1889 record you will be seeking will give you the name of Jose's parents
(with the mother having only an first and middle name), where they married,
and the names of both sets of grandparents. I copy down the godparents and
witnesses too, just in case they turn out to be relatives.

Flamengos film for baptisms covers 1661-1892 (with gaps), marriages from
1705-1878, and deaths from 1649-1884. Once you find Jose's baptism, go back
in time looking for older siblings. Once you don't find any siblings for a
couple of years, request the book for marriages (as Jose's baptism will tell
you where they married) and start at the oldest kid's birth date and start
looking backwards for the marriage of Antonio Duarte Luiz and Maria. Yes, I
know it takes 9 months to make a baby. I also know our ancestors weren't
perfect either. I've seen a baby being born and the wedding take place only
a couple of months before the birth of the baby. I've even seen it take
place after the birth too (but the baptism will tell you that the baby is
illegitimate, so you'll know to look in a different time period for the
marriage).

For ideas on reseaching your Pereira's, use the link above to find the
freguesia/village they were from.

Hi All - My great grandfather, Antonio Nunes, immigrated from the island of
Pico in 1860.  He was born in Sao Matteus in 1840.  I am trying to find out his
date and port of entry.  He lived in San Benito County in CA after his death,
so I have no idea where he came into the UW in 1860.  Also, do you have any
idea on how long the trip took and average cost per person?  I am assuming many
immigrants were farmers or laborers without a lot of money, so do you think
most families saved up the cost of the passage in order to give their children
the chance to immigrate?

Thank you for any information or advice on how to research this.

other islands.  Just go to youtube, terceira, azores and on the right side will
give you several to choose from. Incidently my wife's family are from Sao
Sebastiao.  If you've ever heard of Maria Vieira, of Terceira she is a cousin
to my wife.

Robin; If you ever find that your Soares Coelho line goes back to Santa
Maria, we would most likely be connected as my grandfather was Jose Soares
Coelho from Santa Maria. He immigrated first to the east coast and then
ended up in CA. In CA he first settled in the Los Osos area and later in
the Milpitas, San Jose area. Just a thought, Sam

Clarence, Jack
and Tony. Now these could be children of Mary's brothers I don't know. I
do know that Clarence lived in West Sacramento and was close to my
Grandfather Lawrence.

Thank you,

.. Robin Borba Besotes .

[AZORES-Genealogy] Last Post Azores: Nine Islands...

2009-03-30 Thread Family History

List,

The order form is online and the books are available. Dennis Borges
did not have the six or so books after all. While I was with him, a
teacher who had gone on a tour of the Islands with him and some other
teachers, picked up two of the books, one for herself and one for a
sister. So the others became promised between the time I left home and
when I got there. That should not be a problem for anyone on the list,
as I talked with Deolinda at UC Berkeley and she is very happy to
provide books per the order from that she sent me.

I posted a small sample of pages and the Contents as it is difficult
to decide to buy without knowing what one is buying. If someone has
questions, please email me privately.

I hope my service to you has been helpful. I think of all the help
many of you have been to me so many times, and this is a small thing I
could do in return.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores/Mainland to Brazil

2009-03-30 Thread Chris Macedo

Hi Maria,
I would be most grateful if you could talk to your daughter in law for
me.

Also I noticed in one of your previous postings that you had
ancestors who went to the N.S.W. goldfields in Australia. My
G.Grandfather Jose Andrade Macedo also went to the N.S.W. goldfields
after visiting relatives in Brazil. I don't know exactly when, but I
could probably find out. He then went to New Zealand and after that to
Argentina. He left a son in N.Z. (my grandfather) but took his
granddaughter to Argentina along with his daughters. It is this family
in Argentina that I am going to visit, before going on to Rio.
At least some of the realitives in Brazil were from the Azores ( at
least one from Pico that I know of ) and some from Sao Miguel and a
descendant was Francisco Pereira Macedo 1806-1888, 1st Viscount of
Serro Formosa. His daughter was Maria Jose De Macedo Couto 1822 -1889
(from Sao Miguel I think). Maria married Joao Evangelista de Negreiros
Sayao Lobato, Viscount Sabara.
Their son was Francisco de Paulo Negrois Sayao Lobato, Cheif Justice
of Brazil. There is very little else I know, Does any of this tie in
with your daughter in law?.
Another ancestor is Nicolau Pereira do Campos Verugiro, died 1859, who
was born in Macedo de Cavaleiros in Portugal
and became a Brazilian senator.

Hello, I don't know your name but would love to hear about your
Macedos from Pico. Mine were from Candelaria and before that Sao

mainland in about 1750 but I'm sure that they already had relatives in
the Azores as some of the history goes back much much further there.
