Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Travel

2010-08-14 Thread Besotes

Hello Delores,

You may want to look back on postings last year on this topic.

Our family took a trip to Terceira and Sao Jorge - five of us in all. My
parents, husband and at the time our recently graduated high school son.
Even though my Mother had traveled to all the islands prior with her
parents, I was appointed the person to handle the travel arrangements and
such.

I'm more of a B & B person so we stayed in three different type of lodging
accommodations. We too stay at the Angra Hotel in Terceira but only for the
Sao Joaninas celebration, so we could view the parade and festivities from
our hotel room overlooking the town square.
http://festas2010.sanjoaninas.com/ (Download the Google translator to your
computer and you can view to translate this page in English).

One of our favorite places to stay was the Quinta do Martel
http://www.quintadomartelo.com/eng/index.htm - It was our most favorite
place to stay in Terceria. Do to the size of our family we were able to
stay in one large living quarters - it had a gourmet kitchen (even though
the outside of the home looked very rural) though we didn't cook in it.
Here's a link with photos' of our living quarters where we stayed (the
gourmet kitchen isn't shown) - not sure why they have two different names
(of the links) but it's all the same place:
http://www.casadoquinteiro.com/pt/index.html. In addition, it had three
bedrooms and two bathrooms. Plenty for all of use to enjoy a relaxing
nights sleep and be in the same house. You can tell from their website they
have a large amount of property with historic buildings of yesteryear to
tour. Their daily breakfast is to die for! Island breads, cheese, meats
and jams - in addition to cereal and beverages. Keycou was our daily host.
I can't remember the husband and wife who own the Quinta do Martel, but they
speak good English and the wife is from the US - their in their late 30's or
40's.

Our stay in Sao Jorge was at the Quinta de Sao Pedros
(http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g189133-d110-Reviews-Quinta_de_Sao_Pedro-Velas_Sao_Jorge_Azores.html).
Now, I love a B & B but didn't realize my parents weren't keen on one until
we arrived. What's nice is in addition to the accommodations in the house
where my husband and I stayed, they also have out door accommodations where
my parents and son stayed (which they liked). The photos on the attached
link don't do the Quinta justice. It's a beautiful place to stay. The room
we stayed in had a view from our bed right to the ocean. What more could
you ask for. They too offered breakfast daily and it was just as nice as
the Quinta do Martel. You won't be sorry staying here.

Regardless of where you stay, be prepared to walk. Due to our size of five
people, we rented a van (which they don't have many of them). We drove
ourselves and since my husband was stationed overseas back in the 80's
driving in another country was easy for him. Cars driven on the island are
small.

We traveled in June. Bring a light wind breaker and small umbrella. It's
not uncommon to have a beautiful day and then an afternoon shower. Oh, one
other piece of great advice I was given was to bring ziplock type gallon
bags. If you rinse out a garment it's likely it may not be dry the next
morning, so a bag to put your item in until you arrive at your next lodging
place will save on getting other garments wet.

Cell phones - this can be costly! We only made calls between the five of us
and came home to a $900 phone bill! These were small calls such as, "I'm
here where are you?" You can add to your phone bill for a small fee an
international plan, but if I had to do it over again, others suggested to
purchase a phone while you're there and us it, so I'm sure two new cell
phones would have been cheaper than $900!

Travel between islands - ok, you have one set of luggage guidelines from the
US to the Azores. But, different guidelines between islands, so keep this
in mind. I can't remember the specifics, but could have two pieces of
luggage from the US to the Azores, but only one piece between the islands
(without incurring an additional fee).

On my mother's first trip, she and her parents went thru Ginny and her
husband when they toured all the islands. Everything is on a time schedule
with the tours. Since she had been prior, we decided to handle everything
ourselves and book directly thru SATA and individual lodging. If I had to
do it all over again, we'd handle our own arrangements like we did - not
that a tour isn't nice. Since my husband is with the fire service, he and
our son toured the local fire department. We made friends with a fire
person there - On his day off, he and his son took us on a 4 x 4 ride up
into the Terceira mountains (I didn't even know they had mountains!) and
then on a tour of a indoor cavern that's open to the public. Something we'd
never been able to do or know about. Then my husband and son went on a day
hike in Sao Jorge while m

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Travel

2010-08-14 Thread "E" Sharp
Dolores,

First of all, do not be afraid of going to the Azores. The people are
wonderful and most helpful. I do not read/write/speak Portuguese and
my husband even less so and we had a wonderful week in Terceira and 2
days in Ponta Delgada (much too short a time but I was researching an
Orphange there). Our hotel served breakfast so we only ate a late
lunch/early dinner most days and walked to the local cafes for this.
We picked up cokes, water at the stores and brought them back to our
hotel which has a very nice restaurant also. My husband loved the big
donuts at a small cafe on the way to the Archives. The Archives where
they have the records you are looking for is a 10 minute walk, some
uphill, from the hotel I noted. The town square is right in front of
the hotel and they had various small events during the week. We
walked to some beautiful churches, walked to the Jewish Cemetery and
they have a beautiful walk that goes around the ocean - can't remember
the name of it. At night, most everything in Terceira closes down so
a wonderful friend who took us sightseeing and we went out to dinner a
couple of nights. But I noticed a lady at our hotel had them arrange
a taxi tour for her. There is a large American military base in Lajes
and that is where your plane would land. These inter-island planes
are small but I imagine the ones going from the US are larger.

If you want a free genealogy program, go to familysearch.org and
download their PAF. If you have a Mac computer, you will have to ask
others on this site what program they use. I believe the Archives
charged me something like 10 cents to make copies of the records I
wanted and they are very friendly there, but it seems you already
have records to go on. How lucky for you!! Most of us would die to
have these records so readily available to us. I will look and see if
I still have the map we used when we went there. What other islands
are you thinking about visiting?

I, too, thought I would do genealogy all day but we had such fun just
walking around Angra that I did not do as much as I probably should
have.

You can contact me at my personal email address if you would like.

"E"
PS: Don't forget to buy some Euros from your US bank before you go so
you have enough to pay cab, etc. You can then use your ATM card at
the local banks to get a better exchange rate when you are there.
There was one just outside our hotel.

Delores,

Some people may chose to email you privately. Hitting reply sends the
message to all 760+ people on this list.

Archives: http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/genresources.html

Records for baptisms and deaths - no, not the churches. It depends on when
the event happened. It'll be at the archive or the civil registry. See the
email link above.

Cemeteries: Most cemeteries are not perpetual care like in America. After
a certain number of years, the grave is reused for another person. You
probably won't find a headstone there.

Angra: It's not too big to walk. I think Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel was a
little larger, but I walked that too. I don't mind walking, though.

When I toured Terceira (with a band) we did it over 2 days and stopped in
every freguesia (village). You can see some ruins from earthquakes and
stuff. If you stop at the Casa de Povo and ask, someone will tell your taxi
driver where to go or if someone with that name still lives there. Almost
every freguesia has a Casa de Povo.

Yes, cars are small. The taxis all seem to be Mercedes Benz, though.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Travel

2010-08-14 Thread Cheri Mello
Delores,

It depends on the time period of the record.

The archives has certified and simple photocopies only. I don't remember
the cost of certified (haven't ordered any in awhile). Maybe it was $12-$15
last time I checked. Others who have ordered recently can give you the
exact cost. I think photocopies are under a dollar, more like 50 cents.
You can of course write all the stuff down on paper and organize it
yourself. You can enter it into a genealogy program on the computer.

Many taxi drivers double as guides. There are people on this list that can
recommend some. Basically you ask what they make in a day and you pay them
that. Maybe the last time I did this, we paid $100? Shirley A, do you
remember?

In the summer at night I saw some folklore dancing and some bands playing.

Yes, you hit reply at the bottom if you are still talking about "Azores
Travel" (the subject of this email/thread).

[AZORES-Genealogy] Questions About Research on Terceira

2010-08-14 Thread Delores F
I may have made a mistake when I tried to send an email to the list. I
believe some emailed me privately and maybe I sent a list response to
those who sent email private? I apologize if that is so.

Someone mentioned the "Archives" what is that, where is it located and
what is there? Can I read about it somewhere online?

I will bring the information I already have about my family. Should I
go to the Catholic Church to get Baptised records? What about records
when someone died?

I would like to go to the cemetery and read headstones. Are there lots
of cemeteries on Terceira?

I guess the big city on Terceira is Angra. Are there other cities that
large? How long does it take to drive around Terceira? I have a map
that someone gave me that has homes of some of my relatives from years
ago, but no addresses. Could I find them with a map? Would the homes
still be there? I read that there have been natural disasters but I am
not sure how to find out what was lost in those. Were records lost?
Would houses be gone?

This shows my ignorance, but there may be five people traveling, If we
rent a car are the cars real small? One of our relatives said that
they are.

Wow, it sounds as though there are lots of people who know a lot about
genealogy and I am feeling intimidated.

Thanks to all who responded! How exciting.

If someone has not started their genealogy, how does one start. I have the
villages and the islands. I have marriage records, baptismal of my parents

cost to get started and where does one go to do this?

How does one find a guide and what are their costs? (this is very important
as I am nervous of what it will be like there, but excited, too!)

What could we do at night, if we are sightseeing and I would be looking for
genealogy during the day.

How could I find relatives that are still living as I do not know who they
are? My parents and grandparents are all deceased.

Sorry if I do not reply correctly, I hit reply at the bottom of the last

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family History Centers and Ordering Films

2010-08-14 Thread Cheri Mello
Frequently, I get questions from list members about films and Family History
Centers. Since any genealogy list will always have people new to genealogy,
I will answer the questions here.

1) How do I find a Family History Center (FHC)?
FHCs are affiliated with the Church for Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
(LDS or Moroms). Not all LDS churches have FHCs. Their website,
www.familysearch.org has a searchable database to locate one near you. The
direct URL is here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp
However, if you are anywhere near North Dartmouth, MA, their FHC has all the
film for all 9 islands, and it has George Pacheco there too, who can give
you some pointers on how to use the film and get started. It's best to
email George first to find out what hours he's on duty, as the FHC is run by
volunteers and if a volunteer is absent, there is no substitute. George:
bretanha1...@yahoo.com

2) Do I have to be LDS/Mormon to use their facilities?
No, they are free and open to the public. There is a cost for ordering and
copying the film however.

3) How do I order the film/microfilm?
Go to your local FHC and one of the volunteers there will help you fill out
the form. You pay the ordering fee and wait for the film to come in.

4) Can I order the film/microfilm though my public library or local
university?
Some libraries are called FamilySearch Library Affiliates. These are mainly
public libraries and genealogy libraries. To see a list, go here:
https://devnet.familysearch.org/certification/affiliate-program/AffiliateCurrentLibraries
(I think New Bedford is an affiliate, although I don't see them on the
list).

5) I have the film and it's written in Portuguese. How come it's not in
English?
Because the vital records of Portugal are written in the official language
of Portugal, which is Portuguese.

6) I don't want to go to a library or a FHC. I want to find my family
online. Where do I find them?
Although some records are online, it is no where near complete and will take
many more years to finish. Some records can be found at the CCA site
(Center for Knowledge of the Azores) and some at the NEPS site (something
Population Studies).
CCA: http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/ (use Internet Explorer (IE),
Chrome, or Safari to access).
NEPS (aka University of Minho site): http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/

Hope this helps those who are new to the genealogy adventure!

of the gardens off the back ot it. It is an ideal location as it is
right in town so easy to walk to Archives, food, shopping. Be
prepared to go up hills...sidewalks are stones so wear low, very
comfortable shoes. We did not rent a car, my husband is no longer
inclined to drive in foreign countries anymore, and I believe the
hotel can make arrangements for you to have someone take you around
the island for a day. We took a cab to/from the airport. This is the
same for Sao Miguel and there we stayed at the Hotel Avenida, Rua Dr.
Jose Bruno Tavares Carreiro, Ponta Delgada. Again, we picked this
hotel for its location and there is a laundromat practically across
the street in a shopping mall. We wore jeans and dressy pants, if
needed (I only took 1 pair of black slacks. I did not take or need
any dresses. Most of us who go don't speak Portuguese, no problem.
Others can give you names of guides they have used for tours of the
islands.

Any other questions, just ask. Someone on this list should be able to
answer it. Lucky youI would love to go back and hope to in a
couple of years.

My family and I want to learn more about our heritage and are planning
to travel to the Azores. We don't know where to begin. Someone said
that this list would be a good place to learn about going to the
Azores. So we have lots of questions. We hope that it is okay to ask!
I am the genealogy person in our family and hope to see some of the
records that are there on Terceira.

When is a good time to go? (we are thinking Fall)

What is the best way to travel if you want to go to Terceira and one
other island?

What hotels are reasonable and have nice accomodations?

What clothes should we take? Casual, more dressy?

We don't speak Portuguese, can we travel there without problem?

Should we rent a car or is there reliable public transportation?

Are there guides available and what do they charge, how do we contact
them?

This is a lot, but hope that it is okay!

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joao R. Nicolau - Bretanha, Sao Miguel

Does anyone have anything of this Joao R. Nicolau and family who lived
in Fall River. His full name might be Joao do Rego Nicolau but I am not
sure. He married Maria Jose Sousa b. abt. 1878 - her father is listed as
Manuel Sousa Coelho, Bretanha. Her sister is Miquelina Coelho b. abt.
1886. I found an 1895 marriage record between Joao do Rego Nicolau and
Maria J. de Sousa. His parents are Jose R. and Maria I. Telles and her
parents are Manoel and Maria C. Carvathos (Carvalho?). All children were
born in USA.

Thanks
