Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] The Trip they took

2011-03-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Linda L,

The people who are more versed on history can answer.

When I looked at the passaportes (emigration out of the Azores), there were
a lot from the 1880s-1900 going to Hawaii. I saw a lot to America, and some
to Canada and Brazil. When World War 2 hit, there were much, much less
people leaving.

If I had to guess, by 1920, the economy was better after WWI and people
started emigrating again. But the historians in this group will chime in
and let you know. I like history, but was not a history major or read
extensively on it. Those who have read a lot or were history majors will
post, I'm sure.

2011-03-20 Thread Donna Moody

Hi Linda,

I've read Rick's response to this. It does get confusing. My
grandparents are Mary Constance (Pimentel) and John George Carvalho.
They had an arranged marriage. My Dad, John was their 2nd oldest
child, born in 1915. So Rick's grandmother and my grandfather are
siblings, and his grandfather and my grandmother are siblings. So it
looks like we three are very related, although I would guess you are
more our generation, yes?

Now it looks like we may have a common ancestor. My Carvalho's are from
Bretanha and I do have some Medeiros in my line from there. If your mother
remembered Bella then she definitely knew the family.
The Carvalho Family was very large does your mother remember my great uncle
Manuel J. Carvalho? He was an opera singer and recorded a number of records
from 1917 to 1925. I have been try to locate his records I have some but am
always looking for more they are all in Portuguese on the old 78 rpm format.
They were on Victor (RCA) and Columbia.

I never lived in Fall River. When my grandmother married she went to

I spoke with my Mom today and showed her the pictures you sent. She
remembers that her cousins were Carvalhos who lived on Pitman Street and she
thought the picture was of Bella (I didn't tell her who it was before I
showed it to her). She also mentioned her cousin Gloria possibly being in
that family - she still lives in Fall River and is about my Mom's age (89)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] The Trip they took

2011-03-20 Thread David Leitz
My grandmother arrived in Providence on Nov. 1, 1922, from Pico.
She said she then took a train from there to Chicago to Sacramento to
Hanford. The trip from Chicago to Sacramento took
2 days. My grandfather came in 1920 and I am assuming that he came the same
way. He came right after a child of theirs died from an accident. I've
always wondered if he already had plans to come or if he came because of the
accident.

Does anyone know if there was something else going on in 1920
since it looks like a few others were coming at the same time?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Death Records

2011-03-20 Thread Emacadi
Death Records.

I found death records the most difficult to read - easier as time went on.
There is wonderful information in these records. It is the best source
of information as to the social standing and wealth of a person in a
village. These records often state that a person left a will.

Until about the early 1800s people were buried in the church...not in
coffins; lime helped for faster decomposition. In many of the earlier records
the exact location of burial was given : in front of the pulpit, on the
gospel side near the gate of the chapel of St. Joseph, etc. One of my
ancestors was buried in the grave of his grandmother, Catarina Jacome. This
was
interesting. Her death record states that she was poor, and buried in the
grave of her ancestors..and yet she had a rather large funeral. Lots of
masses, etc. She died in 1617. Now her husband was wealthy, had orange
groves, etc, and when he died his two sons were executors of his will, and he
was buried near the pulpit. I wonder if these two were separated. .I've
tried to find out about orange groves around Santa Barbara, Terceira. This
in the late 1500-1600 period. Nothing

The death records give us a social idea of the parish...from the noble
class to the very poor. We can learn something about the status of our
ancestors. Such as "he was wrapped in a sheet, as he had no proper clothes
for
burial" Often the record will note the amount paid for the burial, "such as
120 Reis paid for burial ". "Or he made no testament for being very poor
and was buried gratis."

And then something like the following: My ancestor, Joana Gonsalves, died
on 16 Sept 1730, in Sao Bento, Terceira, and was buried in her brother's
private grave, next to the screen on the Epistle side. Her brother, Manuel
Simoes in his will , had provided 50,000 reis for the costs of his funeral.

Also interesting in the death records is to read: Emilia Vieira left her
terca to her daughter , Joanna Sousa.
So one wonders where this terca came from - what morgado? From what I
remember about morgados is that this is an entailment, and that one who
inherited the morgado could leave a third to a cousin, sister, etc.
I noted several of my ancestors (women) who left terca's to their
daughters. I am not a good enough genealogist to figure out from what morgado

that terca came from. Maybe it is not possible.

So remember, it isn't only baptism and marriage records. Learn to read
the death records.

2011-03-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Elaine,

I don't remember how many years ago it was that FTM had a really big
revamp. I really didn't like that look of the older versions of FTM. Too
cluttered for my taste. The newer ones (FTM 2010 or 2011 or whatever) is
still cluttered but has a lot of bells and whistles to assist in helping us
as researchers with our genealogy. I did a review of it for the SLC
conference last year. It does take some time in getting over the learning
curve, but it can be done. And there are those that are good at FTM on this
list that can help you off list. I know that the So. Calif. Gen. Society
used to have a FTM user group too. You might check and see if there's one
in your area. So. Cal also has a Legacy, RootsMagic, and The Master
Genealogy User groups (PAF disbanded). It's an hour to an hour an half
drive for me, but I do it so I can learn more about my genealogy program.

Hi Shirley,

You are an Angel. Thank you for offering to help.

The info I have is from USA documents. My paternal Great-
Grandfather's name is Jose Faustina/o Moraes, b. abt. 1856 in Velas,
Sao Jorge. The only firm dates I have for him are his marriage (30
Dec 1880) and his death (31 Jan 1922) here in the USA.
I believe his parents names are Antonio F. Moraes and Maria Rita. I
don't have dates for them. Dates for him and his parents would be
most appreciated.

My maternal Great-Grandmother's name was Maria Santa de Jesus. She
was born abt. 1853 in Velas (I think in the village of Rosaes), and
was also married there abt. 1878-1879. If you can find her
father's name for me, it would help. I believe her mother's name was
Maria Bettencourt. Dates for her are unknown.

I'm sorry that is all I have for you to work with, but anything you
can find would be of help.

God Bless and thanks again.

2011-03-20 Thread Altino DeMelo
Hi Celeste,

My Maria de Benevides was born about 1683 and was married to Manuel de
Oliveira on April 5, 1704. I remember seeing a conversation a while
ago that you had about this with another member, but at the time i
didn't know my mother's paternal side had a line going back to
Bretanha or any of the people on that side for that matter. George was
also instrumental in helping me with this too.

The Maria de Benevides that I have is an ancestor of my husband's paternal

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need Computer Guru's Help Win XP vs Win 7 Family Tree Maker Question

2011-03-20 Thread "E" Sharp
Hi Eric,

My son bought this computer for himself a couple of months ago and is
now buying the new ipad and he knows I have been wanting and needing a
smaller computer so he gave it to me. He is a software engineer in
management and I am sure this computer has all the bells and whistles
possible. You have to know my son...only buys the best. He told me
it is a the Professional model. This computer has more memory, etc.
than my older, larger laptop which is getting TOO heavy for me to
carry along anymore.

I do not want to change from FTM because I like it and as I said
before, I do not like change and learning new thingsgoing to the
latest edition of FTM will be a big deal for me. But he bypassed the
"you have to update" message so I will not be bothered by this and I
am seriously considering updating to FTM 11 or whatever the newest
version is today. You know tomorrow it will be obsolete!! You are
dealing with a 74 year old woman here ..need I say more. But
then, I am the most computer "literate" of all my sisters.I am
also the youngest.

I'm going to call Ancestry and talk to them about all of this. They
are pretty nice people, especially since I have been a member since
its inception.

Getting too old, too soon.

About the RootsMagic (for those who want to know).
Yes, RootsMagic has a neat little thing called RootsMagic To-Go. It can run
the entire program off of your flash/thumb/travel/USB drive (the little
thing that people wear around their neck that's about the size of a stick of
gum, but they are making them smaller now).

Here's a little bit on their To-Go feature:

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need Computer Guru's Help Win XP vs Win 7 Family Tree Maker Question

2011-03-20 Thread Eric Gomes
I know this string is relatively mature on the board but I will add my 2
cents...

First, you have referred to the computer on several occasions as a netbook.
Historically, netbooks are less powerful computers that have limited memory
and limited processing speed. Adding those two together gives you a
computer that has an overall lower level of performance. While the price
level is very affordable, this category of computers was introduced at CES
two to three years ago to serve the people that wanted a computer that they
can email and do their other word processing needs. They are not meant for
running programs such as the FTM and the like, because of the resources
needed to run the programs. I would look into running RootsMagic or the
mobile version of Roots Magic. Legacy may work on the computer as well...
(Legacy Note: I have no knowledge of whether it will work, I am basing this
on the fact that Celeste won a copy of the software with the netbook that
she won in the drawing at the Family History Expo last year in Pleasanton,
CA)

Second, Cheri mentioned in an earlier post that there is a way to run older
programs in Windows 7... and the answer is yes there is... she also
correctly said that it is in the higher versions of Windows 7...
Professional and Ultimate. Unfortunately, if your computer is a true
netbook... it likely does not have the power and performance ability to run
Windows 7. I would visit a local Best Buy and ask the geek squad or ask a
tech savvy relative or neighbor that you trust before you spend the $199.00
minimum for the upgrade.

So there you have my two cents... if you have any questions Elaine, please
feel free to email me your questions or I can send you my phone number off
the board to talk directly. It also sounds like you are in good hands with
your son...

2011-03-20 Thread Cheri Mello
The Carlos Machado work (for Sao Miguel island only):
That manuscript is on the CCA Web site. However, Fr. Joe Viveiros of
Swansea, Massachusetts indexed all 660 pages (and they are HUGE pages, not 8
x 11 or even 8 x 14). He worked on this for a period of 4 - 6 years (I
can't remember, but George and John Raposo probably remember). He has the
index in a Gedcom that you can import into your genealogy program. Then you
can reference the actual page if you want to verify against the original
work. I don't remember the cost of the index (maybe $50-60) for this 660+
pages. I'm sure George or John can tell you where to mail the check (I know
it is to be made out to Fr. Joseph Viveiros).

This is where years of experience in genealogical research pays off. Let me
give a personal example. The microfilmed records of Bretanha marriages go back
to 1703 and Canto's index only goes back only to 1736. But the archives has the
mauscript of the late father Luís Octávio dos Reis of Bretanha, whose hobby was
the genealogy of the people of Bretanha. His births go back to 1606! And then
there if the manuscript of André de Sousa Dias. He was Vicar in Bretanha in
1727 and discovered the remnants of a much decayed parish register. Fearing
that the remaining records in that book would eventually deteriorate completely
he copied out what was left in that old rotting book. Thus we have baptisms
from 1606 to 1679 (with many gaps) and marriages going back from 1569 (also
with many gaps) to 1677. That still leave a space of about 25 years before the
available microfilmed marriage records begin.

And then once you've exhasuted those non-microfilmed sources you can then turn
to other sources. There are published records of wills and entailments. There
are also the geenalogies of Carlos Machado (available for view of the CCA site)
and the genealogies of Rodrigo Rodrigues. There is Frutuoso, Cordeiro and Diogo
de Chagas.

When I started my research, all of my known ancestors were peasants although
like so many other families, we had our legends about nobles and royals.
Eventually I was able to connect back to King Fernando I.

The Azores was settled by successive small groups of people. Their surving
children and grandchildren had a small number of possible marriage partners and
thus there was frequent intermarriage. Once estates were entailed, there was
another reason for arranging advantageous marriages from a restricted social
class. Entailments almost assured that the children and grandchildren of
Morgados, who were not first sons, would soon decline into the peasant class
since they did not inherit very much and were not, therefore, considered good
marriage prospects. My research connected my peasants back to the original
settlers. And some of those settlers had well established lineages going back
to nobles and royals.

There are genealogists who will do your research for you for a fee. George
Pacheco is one of the most talented genealogists I know and his prices are more
than reasonable. However, if you have the time and access to a FHC, you can do
the work yourself for the cost of the microfilm rental. (The FHC in Dartmouth,
MA already has all of the Azorean microfilmed records on permanent loan, so
there would not even be a rental cost involved).
The more research you do, the further back you go, the less you will need to
spend with a researcher and the greater the likelihood you will be able pick up
in the nicely printed texts of Rodrigo Rodrigues. Once you connect to a noble
or a royal there are plenty of reliable print and on line sources that will
take you back to the Middle Ages!

Just about every Azorean descends from several of the settler families. But
you've got to have the patience and the time to work your way back to them, or
the money to engage a researcher.

By point A to point B you are asking how he got from Providence, RI to
Merced, CA? Probably train. I don't think train (choo choo train)
manifests exist. And the migration was within the country, not people from
outside the country. The government keeps track of the outsiders from other
countries. I know of a few Mormon wagon trail lists that exist, but 1920
was probably too late for the wagon.

Adobe Reader, Windows updates, when they ask (or demand) that you do so.
Some of them have have security fixes (yes, the hackers like to mess with
Adobe Reader and Java too). Not only are you safer, then you won't be
having technically difficulties later.

I thought his name was George Pacheco! LOL

(for those new to the reading audience - George is a native of Bretanha and
has also amassed quite a collection on his freguesia of Bretanha).

[AZORES-Genealogy] The Trip they took

2011-03-20 Thread BOBCAMSCPW
Hello group
I have question, and I am not sure if anyone has come across this. My
Grandfather came to the United States in 1920. He arrived at the port of
Providence R.I. on 09/28/1920 and it shows he travel from R.I to Merced CA.
My question is the following' what route would he have taken to go from
point A to point B and would there be any records of his travel. I know that
he was about 15 years old and came to the U.S. by himself base on the ship
manifest, I also was told he traveled by himself to Merced, CA. I have
other family members that have done the same thing. Any assistance or idea's
would be helpful.

I want to thank everyone for their replies. I have passed on all the
info on to my son. Here are the reasons I question it. Number 1 - I
dislike learning new things. Number 2 - I dislike when you are forced
to purchase an upgrade. Number 3 - I may have no
choiceas I know I will really like my new
netbook. It is an HP Professional, with many bells and whistles
including 2 batteries, case, a portable disk drive and a few other
nice features. I don't have it here at home yet as this decision about
FTM has been holding up it's delivery plus I have been out of town the
past 3 days.

Thank you all again. You never fail me.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Familia Faialenses access

2011-03-20 Thread rcapodc
Dear Group

I've thought of a possible solution to the problem that T Jesso was having
with opening the Familia documents. Make sure that your Java Script
program is updated!! I had this problem at work last year and once I
updated I could open the document I needed!

Good Luck,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: How long are records at The Bibliotecas and Arquivos kept

2011-03-20 Thread John Raposo

Thanks Cherri for the info.  So basically d biblioteca's records go
just as far back as what the fhlc has in their databases. So if. We
would like to go further back then what the fhlc's records what other
avenues are there for record keeping in the azores? Or are we simply
out of luck?

My father's family lived on Pitman Street around the same time. My
grandparents would be Manuel & Jorgina Mederios Grota and they would have had 7
children by 1927, my father being one of them (they eventually had 11). My Dad
is deceased but I will show my Mom the picture of the children and see if she
can identify anyone. Her family lived 2 streets over on Choate Street and they
all belonged to the same church so everyone knew everyone else.
