[AZORES-Genealogy] Port of Departure
Good afternoon. I have been trying for sometime to find my grandfather, Jose Teixeira Luiz, on a passenger list. According to family tradition, he and his brother Manuel left Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge to come to the US together. This would have occurred sometime between 1898 - 1903. Where would be the logical port of departure for residents of Sao Jorge? Sao Miguel? -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Port of Departure
Karen, I think Horta on Faial is the closest port. Either that or Angra on Terceira. Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel is definitely the furthest port from Sao Jorge island. I would guess the port closest to home would be where an ancestor would leave. But if they had to leave soon, they may have gone to any port to get out the soonest. I've seen a few Sao Jorge people leaving from Sao Miguel, but the vast majority are from Sao Miguel and Santa Maria islands. Sam, the files are too small, did you get those, that size, or are you shrinking them before you send ? At least double the resolution would make them readable. 1600 pixels of height would do! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Traveling to Sao Miguel and looking for family history
Hi Charles, after reading a little better, looks like you were planning to come here just for the research. Dano is quite right, if you are coming here with the single purpose of researching, than its very important that you bring as much information you can, because you will save and need time. Also it seams you don't know which Island your relatives are from? Cabral is a common name in Santa Maria, but also in Sao Miguel. I actually have this name in my mother's lineage, its in my research plans too. Hi E (E for what?) Thank you again for the information, yes its a nice book, I have it, There are a few nice stories in it. Actually, I know quite a few people from the book, but until now, all the research i managed to make, tells me these Chaves aren't ours. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] introduction myself to the group
Repost for Ricardo, chaves74 at gmail.com: (8 messages, each individually addressed, so read all the way down. Separated by lines) Message 1: Hi John, thank you a lot for the information, I'm still at the beginning, hopefully I someday I'll ask for your help. Yes its good to be here, have access to the books, but its a lot of work and time consumption doing it, but as I said before, I'm 37 so I have a long way to go. The family name of my Santo Antonio's (Its not Alem Capelas no more ;-)) rib is ROCHA, I managed to go up to my 4th Grandfather's name. Still have to go a lot, if i'm lucky! Take care, and tanx for the feedback. = Message 2: Hi Judi thanks for the feedback, its funny, since I moved to Sao Miguel, I've met a few Chaves, and I always ask the same thing, are yo from Sta. Maria. Some say they don't know ;-). Yes I'm aware of those Chaves in Capelas, I ride my bicycle often into Capelas and I remember seeing a house somewhere with a Vivenda Chaves door plaque. I don't know where the Chaves (and they are very few, I can see it in the phone book list) from Sao Miguel, come from, maybe you are rigth, they are from Sta. Maria.Thank you for reading my blog, my wife's maternal side is Furtado and Arruda and they are from Santana, next to Achada. Pedreira is the last Parish towards NE. Wow, 1460, that's practically when the Islands where unpopulated!. I'm still a beginner, I hope I reach at least 1700. Take care = Message 3: Hi Ricardo, thank you for feedback, I still have a lot to go, my main streams are Chaves and Ponte, I'm dedicating my time to these, but always having an eye on the others! I still don't have much about my Ribeira Grande's side, will let you know more as soon I get it. take care! = Message 4: Hi Jorge, thank you for welcome, My Resendes, as far as I went, is from Ribeira Grande. From Santa Maria I have Chaves, Cabral and Freitas, these are the ones I have notes about it, I'm still at the beginning. Cheers === Message 5: Hi Jacki, that is one of my biggest fears, is to find gaps along the way and have no clues to keep going. I met once a great man, who went up to 1700 on his family, he passed away, and he told me that he gave up because around 1700 he found out the child was from what they use to write down (pai incognito) and that made him stop. I know how hard it can be, up to today I have been lucky, my dearest father, only with 64, has a memory of an elephant and every-time I find something new I get confirmations from him. I keep crossing information from relatives, friends or even people that use to know him or her. Good luck Message 6: Hi Linda, Thank you for the feedback, I live in Sao Miguel, for 17 years now, I am from Sta. Maria. I don't know these relatives of yours, it is very possible that I have crossed with some, but still, in Sao Miguel, there is over 150,000 people, even being an Island is quite big. I'm still not in the TAVARES research, I can tell you my Great Grand Father was Jose Resendes Tavares, maybe we are connected. Could you please mention the Book's name? thank you, take care === Message 7: Hi Sammy, no, as far as I reached, the only name I have is TAVARES but its origins seam to be from Ribeira Grande. Take care === Message 8 (last one): Hi Nancy, hope you are enjoying Pico, I've been there twice, beautiful Island. I already had that feeling in the group, I am quite surprised with the feedback. I hope we connect it would save me a lot of time. My Cabral is from Sao Pedro. Safe trip back home. Take care -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please
Sam, I don't know why it reads sem impedimento but then goes on below to say it's the 4th degree of consanguinity (3rd cousins by blood). The occupation of the groom's father is the same of the groom. It says he is native and baptized of the referenced freguesia. I think the mother of groom's occupation says occupation governo something. Governs the household, I think, so she's a housewife. I think it says desta for in this freguesia of Santa Barbara. Father of the bride: Campaneo. Farmer or small farmer as you call it. Mother of the bride: occupation governo sua casa, or governs the house (housewife), but maybe if you're a kid and don't behave, maybe she will get in your face! (LOL) Witnesses: Bettencourt is a (small) farmer and married, living in the referenced place of Feteira. The witness, Andrade is also married. I think it says he is the treasurer of the church. Sam, you did extract all the genealogy info. Now, you get to wait for Joao Ventura to put the dispensations online and hope that this one is there. I don't think all 100% of dispensations still exist to this day. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please
Cheri; Thank you for looking this document over for me.Ricardo said he was unable to enlarge it, did you have the same problem? I used a program I recently downloaded on the recommendation of a list member, sorry I don't remember the person's name but; I do thank her for the recommendation. I thought the program was pretty neat but; if it doesn't allow the recipient of an email to enlarge the attachment, maybe I'll stop using it. Anyway, am I right in thinking that lavrador, campaneo and seareiro all mean farmer or small farmer? I would have guessed that governo sua casa meant housewife but; what I saw was governo sua cara, duh, my mind didn't make the leap! LOL! I have long suspected that my paternal grandparents were to some degree related, though I have no proof as I haven't been able to get my hands on their marriage document yet. Perhaps the tradition was passed down.. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Translation Help Please
Sam, The file was a little small. I aim to save them at 250-300Kb. I was able to enlarge it, but it was a little pixelated. It was sort of dark in spots, though. It seems like the program is doing the trick. Give yourself more time to learn it. Lavrador, campaneo, etc are farmers or day workers. I think that the women of the house being in your face is pretty funny!
