Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Francis Joseph

2012-05-23 Thread Tony Matthews
Thanks Anita for your own interesting story.  Yes, I did try using the
Francisco Jose moniker but so far no luck with that even.  We suspect he
angliscised his name which
may make it harder to trace and even more so if he has dropped off the last
portion of his birth name or changed it completely as some did!. I haven't
been able to find which ship he supposedly jumped from either which doesn't
help.  I did read when scanning the shipping records, there were instances of
escaping sailors drowning in their attempt to jump ship.
Guess I'll just to be patient and apparently I am not, judging by the re-action
from my sister niece when we shopped for clothes for my mother yesterday.
I'll leave women to shop alone in future lol. Tony

Hi Tony,

My GG Grandfather was also from Flores, Azores (Ponta Delgada)... Left
as 14yr old jumped from a whaling ship in Wellington at about 18yrs.
Eventually became naturalised married an English Settlers' daughter
- they had 9 children in NZ.

We found that his name changed from the original, perhaps officially
when signing his naturalisation documents...The NZ family knew him as
Manuel Jose Bernard, yet he was Jose Bernardo de Almeida at birth. He
has a few relatives  also called Francisco Jose, but the DOB does not
match - could be a cousin!

We've pieced together much of Manuels tree re ancestors thanks to this
group 'Azores Nation' website... Still hoping to find some more of
his siblings their descendants.

Let us know how you get on,

Anita

Hello Jools, yes we did connect some time back and you were very helpful then.
Your Francis Joseph, definitely is not my man at all (even if the Archives did
try to tell me different!) and as we know his back ground is well
authenticated/documented which is really great for his descendants.  He was
also naturalised.  Thanks again for your comments. Tony

The only 2 cents I can think of for Tony is  at first  I thought hmm at least I
haven't seen that many  Francis Josephs.

I tried visualibg all the common names and then it hut me:  his name in the
records of the Azores  was probably FRANCISCO JOSE.- not Francis Joseph.   I
don't know if this sheds a sliver of  light  on anything.

I have spent hours pouring over shipping lists and did find a Francis Joseph

Nantuckett, Mass and later on
was perhaps the same man sailing the Atlantic Pacific showing up in
Australia.  Both the time frame and age of the individual fits at various

I haven't had much luck with either Ancestry.com or Mr Holmes' site.

Hi Tony

Cheri is correct about the documents that will lead you to know where in the
Azores he came from.

If you could find the wife's name then you could look on pioneer index for more
info.  That is how I discovered info that lex ne to uncover much about our 2
gold miner great grandfathers (actually my husband's). If ge married an English
girl, maybe she was Wesleyan.  I learned that they were dissenters fm the
Church of England, as was the case in one of our ancestors.  Your gr
grandfather was born a few year before our 2guys 1836 and 1838 but there were
several siblings born before them.  They were drawn to Australia by the
goldfields.  Any family stories that would give more of a clue?
I was able to get the marriage certificate for my husband's gr grandfather and
that's how I knew they were married by theWesleyan minister.

I alzo found them on unassisted passengers comment on the ship Water Lily in
1853.  Are there museums in the New Zealand area where they preserve names and
history like they have in Victoria.

Try cemetery where the family lived.  Sounds like stayed put in one area (?) so
if he was a carpenter maybe he made furniture- the old newspapers had many ads.
I learned slot about out guys from the Creswick and Clunes daily Register and
Advertiser.  Then I sent away to the public records office Victoria for each of
18 articles where their names are mentioned.  It is tedios but peopke in
Victoria were amazingly helpful as I live in the US.  I hope you keep looking
and you will find him.  My husband's gr grandfathers were J J DE LIMA and their
father was Antonio José.  Best of luck              Maria Elena

  Hi,

I need help with the translation of this record. I can read parts of it,
but the abbreviations are unfamiliar and it is very difficult to read. ***
 *

 ** **

I believe it is the record for Antonia Felicia, daughter of Domingos
Pereira Cardoso and Agada Da Conceicao (as shown in the NEPS database) with
a birthdate of November 22, 1762, but I can’t read much of the record. She
 is my fifth great-grandmother.

The image is from the Family History Library, Film No. 1330080. I am
hoping that by getting a translation of this record, I may be able to
decipher two more from the same film at about the same time.

Thanks for any help. I am always impressed by how members of the group can
read some of the records presented.

I haven't yet had time to examine them -- although I doubt I'll find
many surprises in my family, since I know where most of my relatives
in the US were by 1940. (Of course I might find some juicy stuff on
some of our old neighbors -- LOL!). Katharine.

2012-05-23 Thread Diane George
Thanks to all of you who translated. The info will help with some other
records I have located and gives me a lot more information that I had
before.

I am really stumped by the abbreviations, particularly those used on names.
Is it common for Silveira to be abbreviated as Silva? Is there a list of
common abbreviations anywhere?

Also, on NEPS, I have several relatives listed as “Ana,” but when I look at
the record, it looks like “Anna.” Which is likely to be the correct
spelling?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Vacation hold and mail settings for this list

2012-05-23 Thread Cheri Mello
With summer season quickly approaching (for the northern hemisphere reading
audience), some readers may not have access to email and may not want to
come home to hundreds of messages (although the months of June, July, and
August can be a bit slower, they are not always slower).

At the end of each email is a footer that says the following (depending on
your email provider, you may have to expand the rest of the email message
to read it):

To unsubscribe from this group, send email to
azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions

If you don't have access to email in your travels, you will want the No
Mail mode when you go on vacation. It is much easier than unsubscribing
and resubscribing (the old Rootsweb way). If you don't have a Google
account though, I don't think the above directions for No Mail Mode works.
I think you have to email me, Rosemarie, or Mel and have one of us change
your settings. When you return, you have to email one of us again and we
will restart you.

I looked at the obito for Joao de Sousa Cardoso today. This is how I read it:
This is on page 54 right

DOD: 13 August 1797, Velas, Sao Jorge, Azores
Joao de Sousa Cardoso
age 63
ate sacraments
Buried this Matriz
SPOUSE
Isabel do Rosario
Parochial of Santo Amaro, termo Velas
That is the best that I could do.

I found the following birth info:
DOB 1? June 1731
BAPT 3? June 1731, Velas, Sao Jorge, Azores ((page 15 RightCenter)
Isabel
(Joam Machado Costa, native N.S. Rosario -Rosais (Sao Jorge)
X Mecia da Rosario, native Velas)
GODPARENTS
Joam Manoel Teixeira de Betancurt
 Joanna de Resureicao
(Manoel Silveira de Sousa X Maria Camacha) both deceased
residents if Beira

Hope this helps.Shirley in CA

  Thank you, Shirley,

I appreciate your help on this.

I've been searching for the children of Joam and Isabel and also for Joam's
obit which I found. I could certainly use some help with the record. I think it
says he died August 13, 1797 and was 63 years old. I hope someone will confirm
that for me. Also, usually there's more information in the record regarding
occupation, number of children etc and I can't seem to see any of that. Could
someone tell me the other information held in the record? It can be found in
VELAS OBITS FOR 1790-1800, PG. #0072, jOAO DE SOUSA CARDOSO MARRIED TO ISABEL
DO ROSARIO.

  Thank you for any help,
  Nancy Jean

I find from the Naturalization Records when I receive them. You and

Not necessarely. Back then last names could vary. Isabel father was
Joao Machado Borba. Would be perfeclty normal if Isabel son,
Antonio, would have been Antonio Machado Borba

Thank you for the information, but the Antonio below born Nov. 5
would have the last name of Azevedo, not Borba, correct? I have no
other information about Antonio M. Borba’s parents or siblings.
Only that he married a woman named Emilia, and they had
approximately 6 children; 4 girls and 2 boys. Am I missing
something else in your data below?
