Karen, I probably could answer your question of why your grandmother came a year after her parents. The cost of the voyage. She traveled with 2 aunts and an uncle. Her parents were already here. I wish I had asked her way back when as to why her parents came almost a whole year ahead of her when she was so young. They all came in through Rhode Island and settled in New Bedford. Some stayed there for a while. Others left right away for Mendocino County in California. [AZORES-Genealogy] Women traveling from Acores
My grandmother traveled alone to New York and then by train to Hanford, CA. She was going to her cousin (Joaquin Valine) who owned the California Saloon. She was sponsored by him or maybe one of her two brothers who were already here. Upon arrival in Hanford she went right to the saloon which was very near the train station. She walked right in the front door. Her cousin was very happy to see her, but he told her Virginia, you never come in the front door of a saloon. Ladies don't do that! She didn't know. Her cousin had told her he knew a nice man for her to marry and had told my grandfather that he had a nice girl coming that he might like to marry. And they did marry the next year. Sorry I can't find the email where this was posted, I want to thank the person who sent this. Very interesting, I also have to admit that I have never heard anyone speak Portuguese. So it was nice, but odd at the same time. Since I know how to speak Spanish a little and read it better, and as I have gone through records thinking its was very similar to Spanish. BUT after hearing it sounds alot different.Anyways just wanted to say thanks, it was neat to finally hear it. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams
Pam,Although my father speaks Portuguese, which he learned while the family lived in Brazil before I was born, I also never heard it spoken until my first trip to Portugal in 1992.My cousins in Lisboa also know English, so it worked great for me. My impression was and is still that Portuguese sounds similar to Spanish and French. Then I found that all my cousins also know French and they felt it was a very easy language for them to learn.I have since confirmed with many native Portuguese speakers that most also know French. My grandfather from Terceira was a salesman in Tulare, Oakland, Sacramento and many places in between. He was reportedly fluent in Spanish, which must have helped him make sales to a broader public.I remember none of this myself, since I was pretty young and my grandfather already retired by the time I knew him, but there are Sacramento families who knew him as the linguiça man, since he distributed linguiça throughout these areas of California. I would not be surprised if some of the older readers of this list also remember him for that.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams From: Pam Santos pamsanto...@gmail.com Date: Thu, January 31, 2013 12:53 pm To: azores@googlegroups.com Sorry I can't find the email where this was posted, I want to thank the person who sent this. That is exactly what I was thinking it sounded French!!! I could still understand some words, but I am glad I heard it because when I finally do go to the Azores, I know now that I will not be able to understand them. Compared to what I thought it being similar to Spanish. Thanks Sonia I will keep that in mind. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams
When I used to teach in the public schools, we had to give out the state tests. I was supposed to pace up and down the aisles while my students were testing. So I used to listen to the Portuguese language tapes while walking up and down the aisles. After the testing was done, my Spanish speaking students (13 14 year olds) wanted to hear the tapes. They listened and said it sounded like Spanish with a French accent. One student told me that she thought if she were left in Portugal, she could probably start to get by after about 2 weeks (she was a native Spanish speaker). I've been told that Portuguese is supposed to be the closest to Romanian. I've never heard that spoken, so I really don't know. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams
*Although I was born in California, I speak and understand Portuguese reasonably well and even read and write enough Portuguese, both Azorean and Brazilian (including some slang), to write letters to friends and relatives in both the Azores and Brazil (my late wife was Brazilian and we were married almost 21 years). I was born 4 years after my mother immigrated to the US, so I didn't speak much English until I started school. By the time I started high school, I had forgotten most of my Portuguese, but a whole family of cousins immigrated from the Azores and I started speaking it again. After grad school, I got a chance to work in Brazil where I met my wife and the rest is history. Now when I go to the Azores, I am sometimes asked what part of Brazil I'm from. Similarly, some Brazillians will say that I have an Island accent. I went to all this preamble to say that I absolutely am hopeless with French,.. can't begin to understand it. I took Spanish in High School and get along reasonably well. I can even get along in Italian, but French is a big ZERO. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams
My Spanish friends tell me that Italian is easier for them to understand than Portuguese. My Italian friends tell me the same. I had a cousin (Azorean by birth) who worked for Varig Airlines in Brazil and when she came home to visit and used Brazilian Portuguese her mom kept telling her to speak Portuguese because she didn't understand her with all the new sounds. The thing to know is that Portuguese/Spanish/French/Italian/Romanian are all Romance languages and Latin is their link. I have been to Romania in 1991 and on the tours that were only given in Romanian I did understand quite a bit. What I didn't understand I asked them to say it in French then I got by. I did the same in Romanian restaurants. helen cunha kerner From: Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com To: azores@googlegroups.com Sent: Thu, January 31, 2013 1:50:31 PM Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Island of my dreams When I used to teach in the public schools, we had to give out the state tests.
