[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Searching for information on Francisco De Simas / Jose Francisco De Simas / Jose Silva De Simas
Just wondering where would be the best place to start searching for these records. I am a bit of a novice at this. My great great great grandfather came from Portugal. The region is unknown at present but could be somewhere around the Porto district or Azores region (this is second hand information from a relative). I think he was born approx 1814 - 1822 (Although family think it could be as late as 1836 but this doesn't match age on documents I have) and left Portugal on a whaling ship in which he jumped off in Australia. I think I have narrowed down the whaling ship to Jeannette which sailed from New Bedford in 1842 and he was listed as a boy (what does this mean?). He lived in Australia for a while then sailed on the Oliver Lang to New Zealand where I believed he changed his name from Jose Francisco de Simas to either Jose Leal de Simas or Jose Silva de Simas. I believe the Silva to be his mothers maiden name. I am seeking any information about his life but particularly information about his younger days. I dont have names for his parents or an exact location of his birth but would love to find this information out. Anyone out there that can help me : Thanks Amy -- -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. Some of the information in Ancestry, Roots Web, and Family Search seem to have various information but nothing consistant. The birthdates for Teresa Velho vary as well as the spelling of her last name and whether she remarried to Fernando Soares de Albergaria as I have found these records also. With Martim there is a reference to a Catarina so I don't know if he married her after Teresa or not. - Original Message - Geneva Altino: Martim de Oliveira Vasconcelos, filho de Rui Mendes Vasconcelos, casou com Tareja (Teresa) Velha, irma de Goncalo Velho, Capitao de Santa Maria e S. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Daniel R. Paiva
Hi, I suspected it was you Dano, but I was not sure. I am introducing, comparing and trying to verify the data you sent me... in some cases I have different wives. As an example, I have FRANCISCO VIEIRA HOMEM, Captain married to MARIA DA COSTA DE SOUSA, Dona and (another) FRANCISCO VIEIRA HOMEM, son of the above, married to MARIA MONIZ DE MEDEIROS. My source is Rodrigo Rodrigues, Genealogias de S. Miguel e Santa Maria. Your FRANCISCO BOTELHO DA MOTA married to MARIA DE MACEDO, Dona is the brother of MARIA DE MEDEIROS who is my 11th great grandmother. Do you know if you have any of your PAIVA going to Porto Formoso? Do you have acces to Rodrigo Rodrigues Book? Hopping to help you in some way, Eliseu Pacheco da Silva Researching S. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Cabral Family
That's very interesting but now throws off my family line. Thanks for the information - Original Message - Altino is correct. Most genealogits agree that Diogo is Martim's son by an unmarried woman, Catarina Afonso. Diogo was later legitimized by royal decree (published in the Arquivo dos Açores ) which is how we know Catarina's name. A careful reading of Frutuoso reveals that Martim came with his wife, Teresa Velho, and children to S. Miguel. They didn't like it and returned leaving Diogo behind. The assumption that all his children were were also Theresa's is merely an assumption. It is possible that Frutuoso thought (assumed) that they were, or his syntax was simply imprecise. The descendants of Diogo are not the descendants of Velho Cabral's sister.
