Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford St John's Cemetery Lookup Needed
Cheryl...well I'm now VERY sure this is my g-grandfather now that I've gotten some details. If you get a nice day, I sure would like a picture of the final resting place of my g-grandparents. He is in the St Anthony section, but I'll have to find the street for you. The stone apparently names someone else as his wifeso now my curiosity is fired up. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bretanha Connections
Dear Cousin Rick: Actually Rick, our common ancestors are the grandparents of José de Viveiros de Miranda, António Viveiros Travassos of Capelas, married on 10 May 1714 to Maria de Araújo, born 16 Oct 1682. My latest revision of my paper on the Mirandas of Bretanha runs 300pp. I do not think I will be revising it any further. The Pacheco Mirandas, Cordeiro Mirandas, Viveiros Mirandas, Mirandas de Araújo, Tavares Mirandas and the Mirandas from Santo António all have Afonso Ledo as their common ancestor. So anybody connected to any one of these Miranda branches is related to everybody else with a connection in any of these Miranda branches. The Viveiros Mirandas are nicknamed the barbeiros, i.e. barbers, which also means they were amateur surgeons. They pulled teeth, stitched up wounds, etc. They were near neighbors and worked closely with the Morgados da Lomba Grande. The house of José de Viveiros and Joana da Estrela still stands at the intersection of the Estrada Nacional and the Canada da Lomba Grande. In its time it was one of the best houses in Pilar. I remember visiting Mestre João Barbeiro in that house some 35 years ago. Just now I was looking through the genealogies of the island of Graciosa called:Livro de Genealogias da Ilha Graciosa - Mateus Machado Fagundes d'Azevedo It was there that I found mention of possibly the first person named Medeiros on Faial. Her name was Maria Afonso de Medeiros, wife of Diogo Afonso Picanço.It says they were the original settlers of Faial and lived in Praia do Almoxarife. While I thought there was a great chance the Medeiros of Faial and Pico were originally from São Miguel, the fact that Maria Afonso de Medeiros came from the city of Faro on the mainland leads me to now believe she could be the source of Medeiros for these islands. I don't know if he's on this list, but an old friend of mine in Brasil named Décio de Medeiros, whose Medeiros family came from Faial, might know more about this. Maybe he will chime in here. There could be more early Medeiros people who settled in Faial with other origins. I have an ancestor named Pedro Vieira de Medeiros living in São Roque do Pico. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Translation of Death Record for Miguel de Souza Ataide - Graciosa
Hi David, I have some Sousa Ataíde but I am not able to relate them to this one. This is the outline of the record: Captain Miguel de Sousa Ataíde died in the 2nd of March, 1764, N. Sra. da Luz. He was 86 going to 87. He was the widower of Dona (Lady) Maria de Melo. He left a will made by the official clerk (Escrivão) Alberto Correia Pestana where he stated the way he would be buried. His son the Alferes (Military rank above the Captain rank) Manuel de Sousa Ataíde was his official will executioner (we can assume that Manuel was the eldest male son in the island). Captain Miguel was buried in another grave because his own was occupied (may be with is wife…) Captain Miguel was born around 1678/1677. None of my Manuel de Sousa Ataíde (I have three with this same name) are his son… unless I have them with the wrong parents… I have a Miguel de Sousa Ataíde, born around 1695… but from a different father. Please let me know if you have any more info on this family. Eliseu Pacheco da Silva Researching S. [AZORES-Genealogy] military ranks
Hi Eliseu,It could just be a typo, but I wanted to point out that Alferes is the rank just below Capitão.The only ranks above Capitão are Sargento-mor and Capitão-mor.It's always interesting to document people as they move up the ranks. They might not have any rank when married, but if their father held some rank, often they might soon be Sargento. Then maybe 5 years later they reach Alferes. Maybe soon after that, or many years later, they finally reach Capitão. And if their ancestors were some of the most important in that village, they might be able to reach Sargento-mor or Capitão-mor, or both in succession, if those posts become available upon the death of someone already holding that rank, since there is only one of each for each concelho.Atenciosamente,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com Original Message Subject: RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with Translation of Death Record for Miguel de Souza Ataide - Graciosa From: "Eliseu Silva" eliseuman...@gmail.com Date: Thu, April 25, 2013 2:09 pm To: azores@googlegroups.com Hi David,I have some Sousa Ataíde but I am not able to relate them to this one. This is the outline of the record:Captain Miguel de Sousa Ataíde died in the 2nd of March, 1764, N. None of my Manuel de Sousa Ataíde (I have three with this same name) are his son… unless I have them with the wrong parents…I have a Miguel de Sousa Ataíde, born around 1695… but from a different father. Please let me know if you have any more info on this family. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bretanha Connections
Ok, after a little digging I figured out how to use the Relationship Calculator in the PAF. It says that I am the 4th great grand niece of Joana Maria da Estrela Viveiros with the common ancestors being Antão Soares and Maria Teresa Camara Aguiar. If anyone has any more information on these folks I could certainly use it. Thanks for giving me another branch to explore! Now if I could only find someone with more information on folks in Rabo de Peixe... Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bretanha Connections
John, I have many Viveiros from Capelas. I think your Antonio Viveiros Travassos is son of Francisco da Costa Travassos and Ana de Viveiros married in Capelas on 30 oct 1683 (CCA #27). Their son Antonio was born in Capelas on 17 oct 1685 - CCA #46, his godparent was the Priest Manuel de Sousa Aguiar. Am I right? Ana de Viveiros was a widow, but the priest didn´t mention her previous husband on the record. I found two Ana de Viveiros married in Capelas before 1683. Ana de Viveiros m. to Manuel de Oliveira (de Macedo) on 21 oct 1675 - CCA #17, and the other one m. to Miguel de Sousa Aguiar on 16 dec 1675 - CCA #26. The first one had the daughter Guiomar baptized in Capelas on 3 jun 1687 - CCA #50, so Ana de Viveiros who married Miguel de Sousa Aguiar on 1675 might be the one who married Francisco da Costa Travassos on 1683. And another clue is that the godparent of their son Antonio was the Pe. Manuel de Sousa Aguiar. Ana de Viveiros was daughter of the Alferes Gaspar de Viveiros and Ana de Oliveira, my ancestors too, and was born on 26 jul 1645 - CCA #94. I guess Ana de Viveiros married again in Capelas on 23 sep 1686 - CCA #30, to Manuel de Melo.
