2014-03-28 Thread Margaret Vicente
I back your pardon, it is Mosteiros.

My core family is from S. Jose and other nearby towns and I find
interesting that one of the witness was Jacinto Jose, same name as my 5th
ggfather who had a daughter also named Luisa.

You also mentioned a passport. Was it a PT passport? Aand if yes what was
the date of issuance? You might be able to trace it to the online passport
records.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Luiza de Jesus of Pais incognito

2014-03-28 Thread Cheri Mello
Maria Elena,

Yeah, math teacher. With over 1200 readers, some experienced and know what
you meant and some are brand new to genealogy, well, I just don't want
people to take things as the gospel truth.

The information you provided is your husband's strict maternal line. All
women all the way back to the woman in question.

2 strategies for this line.
1) mtDNA testing. This focuses on this one line ONLY. HOWEVER, unless
there happens to be a rare mutation, the results are generally
anthropological in nature. By that, I mean you get a lot of the "out of
Africa" theory. I made an post earlier today about mtDNA testing in
regards to the current sale.

2) Autosomal DNA (Family Finder) testing. This focuses on ALL of your
husband's lines going back about 200 years from his birth. If you have
most of his lines documented except this Luzia de Jesus Correia line, then
this test will work for you. If your husband's mother or grandmother is
alive, it would be better to test the oldest one (test grandma if she is
alive. If not, test mom if she is alive. If not, test hubby).

You can do both. You can order the mtDNA with this current sale (but don't
hope for a genealogy match) and wait for the Sizzling Summer Sale around
June/July. Family Finder won't be on sale (price is $99 USD + postage),
but the last 2 sales they have offered a $100 gift card to
www.Restaurant.com (good for U.S. restaurants - smaller mom-and-pop types,
not big chain restaurants) with the purchase of a Family Finder test.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Luiza de Jesus of Pais incognito

2014-03-28 Thread Maria Lima
Thank you Cheri . I hope I'm answering what you want:

My husband is Paul Edwin Lima
Parents were:
Maria Luiza Machado X Fortunato Roosevelt Lima

Maria Luiza Machado: parents
Maria Georgina Almeida X Domingos Moniz Machado

Maria Georgina's parents:
Luiza de Jesus Coreira X Luiz Medeiros De Almeida ( I have not seen the
Medeiros name at all in Luiz lineage; I've just seen De Almeida in all the
records. I got that Medeiros name from my husband's mother but nothing to back
it up and I was thinking of leaving it out when I enter him in familysearch
because I have no Source.

I'm sorry I wasn't more exact when I misquoted you. I should have said many
expostos used their baptismal dates for birthdates. I didn't think it was a
hard and fast rule, but then, I had not really considered it before because
this is the first one I've found with Pais incognito. So thank you for
catching that . (You must be a math teacher?). I appreciate all the work you
do and apologize for getting sloppy and generalizing.

One thing you might be able to do, if she had any daughters, and if these
daughters had any daughters who are living to this day, is get the mt-DNA
test and maybe somehow, someone in the future will match and you can find
 that one maternal line.
Also, the Family Finder test will register her DNA, but as Cheri has
pointed out many times, it will take time to figure out relatives you are
 getting from her unknown parents.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Salt Lake City Genealogy Conference, Registration Deadline coming up on April 1st!

2014-03-28 Thread Cheri Mello
I need to know by Tuesday who is coming (and that you've put the
registration in the mail). Here's the original announcement for those new
to the list or who missed the previous announcements.

Our genealogy and research trip to Salt Lake City on April 15-18, 2014, is
quickly approaching!

I need a couple of weeks to work on things, so I've set the registration
deadline as April 1st (and for those dropping it in the mail on Apr 1st, I
won't get it for a few days).

For those thinking of attending, you can read more about the conference
from the Azores GenWeb page here:
goo.gl/E9FHvV

We will be able to help Madeirans, Cape Verdeans, and the continent too!

You can still book a room at the Plaza Hotel. Rooms are available, they
just are not holding them for us. Call the hotel and tell them you are
with the Azores group. If that doesn't work, tell them you want the
genealogy special. (It's the same as our deal - stay 3 nights get one
free). Also email me off list to let me know you've booked a room so I can
be sure they put you in our block!

We have people coming from Canada, Australia, and Joao Ventura coming from
Terceira!

Looking forward to meeting many of you soon!
 Cheri, Rosemarie, and João

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Luiza de Jesus of Pais incognito

2014-03-28 Thread pico
Maybe the reason expostos used the baptism date as the birth is that when abandoned, it would be no more than a day before they were baptized. If abandoned in the dark or after midnight, the following morning they would be baptized.Of course, if the baby was kept for a few days before abandonment, that will throw off the birth vs. baptism date. Sometimes they say how old the baby looked. I guess they could tell. I'm not sure I would be able to pick out a baby born today verses yesterday or two days before.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Margaret:  thank you.  After I wrote the list I kept looking and it was right there.  Sorry.  You did confirm what I found.   She used February 5- her baptismal date as her birthday.   Cheri just confirmed that expostos did use their baptismal date as their birthday.  So sad I can't go further until we get DNA and I really don't know how that helps (yet) because I don't understand the DNA vocabulary.  I'm going to have to grow and learn about DNA now.  - from the emails I see here- it seems confusing.  I see some people make connections and others are unsure of the info they get.  So it's time to grow and learn!  Maria Elena

That Pechejo must be some kind of alcunha (nickname).

I've got those surnames in Ribeira Quente (RQ), but not as direct

Maria,

There's a window into Luisa's past through the people who raised her. Were
you to research the couple in Feteiras you may get new insights into her
life.

I did NOT say ALL expostos do this. I said MANY people. I don't want
people think that it's some type of rule. Many people just did (and maybe

2014-03-28 Thread Maria Lima
Margaret: thank you. After I wrote the list I kept looking and it was right
there. Sorry. You did confirm what I found. She used February 5- her
baptismal date as her birthday. Cheri just confirmed that expostos did use
their baptismal date as their birthday. So sad I can't go further until we get
DNA and I really don't know how that helps (yet) because I don't understand the
DNA vocabulary.

I'm going to have to grow and learn about DNA now. - from the emails I see
here- it seems confusing. I see some people make connections and others are
unsure of the info they get. So it's time to grow and learn!

Bob O,

Everything is organized by church level (at least back then).

Faial has about 13 freguesias. That's not too many to research, but you
have really common names.

The CITCEM (used to be called NEPS) is here:
http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/genealogias.html

Warning though: This database was created by humans and therefore has some
human error in it. Once you find your people, cross check with the actual
records on the CCA site.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: FTDA MTdna sale

2014-03-28 Thread Cheri Mello
And here's my take on mtDNA:

It's best use is anthropology. We'll get a lot of the Out of Africa theory
stuff from it. I'd have to find my notes, but the mtDNA Plus test covers
something like 1500 base pairs. The mtDNA Full Sequence or Mega covers the
entire 16,000+ base pair molecule. The WHOLE thing.

To use mtDNA for genealogy, it would be best to use it in conjunction with
another researcher. Let's say you and I had a theory that our mother's
mother's mother's mother's were sisters, but be couldn't prove it because
the church books were lost or don't go back that far. However, we are in
the same freguesia and our ancestor are the godmother's for each other's
kids. So if we both take an mtDNA test and we match perfectly, then yes,
we can be pretty sure that we are cousins.

With that being said, the first DNA match ever made in the Azores project
was with an mtDNA match, off of the mtDNA Basic test (which they don't
offer anymore - too ambiguous). A man in Brazil matched a woman in
California. They both had are fairly rare mutation. With a little more
paper trail research they proved it too.

When the mtDNA Full Sequence/Mega test first came out, it was about $500
USD! Things have sure changed since then. I did test my mom on the Full
Sequence/Mega, only because we were having a few too many hospitalizations
at that time. I didn't expect to get anything out of it and to date, have
not got any matches out of it. But it will be there for me when the day
comes.

I never tested my dad's mtDNA. That line is a bit of a dead end, but I
haven't quite exhausted the paper trail yet. But knowing that it was $500
at one time and this is the best price on the Full Sequence/Mega, I went
ahead and ordered it on him. However, I know full well NOT to expect any
genealogical matches unless I get lucky and he has a rare mutation. I
might as well go place a bet on who is going to win the World Series in
American baseball this fall. I wouldn't win money on that and I don't
expect to hit pay dirt with my dad's mtDNA either. But it is a good deal
and then I'll have his DNA there when I need it.

Thank you so much for that information.

My husband is descended from Luiza's daughter, Maria Georgina. And Ma Georgina

would it help to get HIS DNA?

If so, I do not know what to ask him to get. Sorry, I'm really ignorant on

[AZORES-Genealogy] Luiza de Jesus, Pais incognito-

2014-03-28 Thread Maria Lima
I found the Sao Jose expostos book and I found a Luiza baptized 5 February1838.
That is the date she used as her birth date!

Does any one know if with expostos they used the date of their baptism as their
date of birth ? They probably didn't know what date they were born. What is
that occupation campomex- a farmer?

Thanks. I'm inclined to think this could be her because the date is the date
she said she was born. Any thoughts?

Hello Joseph,

Unless you want to test a different family member. I would wait until you get
the results of the tests you have already ordered. The Full Sequence MtDNA
would be useful in some cases but I would see what your results are from the
MtDNA plus.

I am a Haplogroup “W” this haplogroup is not common and the total percentage
world is a small percentage. Many “W”s in this country can trace their ancestry
to a single French Canadian in the 1600’s. If you have a very common haplogroup
you may want to consider the Full Sequence to thin out the number of matches.

One thing you might be able to do, if she had any daughters, and if these daughters had any daughters who are living to this day, is get the mt-DNA test and maybe somehow, someone in the future will match and you can find that one maternal line. Also, the Family Finder test will register her DNA, but as Cheri has pointed out many times, it will take time to figure out relatives you are getting from her unknown parents.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Luiza de Jesus of Pais incognito

2014-03-28 Thread pico
One thing you might be able to do, if she had any daughters, and if these daughters had any daughters who are living to this day, is get the mt-DNA test and maybe somehow, someone in the future will match and you can find that one maternal line. Also, the Family Finder test will register her DNA, but as Cheri has pointed out many times, it will take time to figure out relatives you are getting from her unknown parents.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Luiza de Jesus Coreira is my husband's gr grandmother and lived in Boston so we have her birthdate as 5 February 1838. I even found her passport with her picture when my husband's mom died and I had to "dispose" of her belongings after she lived 40 years in the same house. It's a miracle how I came upon Luiza's passport. So I'm so sad that with her lineage I've come to the end.

Her passport, her marriage and even the birth records for her children state she was from Sao Jose parish in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. However, I could not find Expostos for Sao Jose parish. So I went to the Matrix, Sao Sebastao. There I found a baptismal record on 15 February 1838 for a Luiza, placed on the Roda, and given by order of the Camara to be raised to Angelica de Jesus, wife of Antonio Pacheco. (Interesting they tended to give the child to a woman, "wife of or widow of" and not the couple. Maybe there's a reason for that. Was the giving of the child to someone to raise a legal adoption?

I'd like your opinion: I feel like I'm grabbing at straws here assuming this is my Luiza. if she was really born on the 5 and baptized the 15th then that makes sense, right? The name of the lady who raised her also had the middle name of "de Jesus." So that's like "another clue" (?)

Luiza always used the surname Correia. Now I realize I have no leads to research her last name.

Maybe they learned more about their birth circumstances as they got older and there was a Coreira in her lineage?

Looks like they used the same 2 guys to be padrinhos for just about all the pages I read. So I discounted them from any familial ties.

Any insights would be so appreciated. It's sad when you get to the end of the line. :(
I've heard of miracles in dead ends but I just don't know where to go with this.
Any help would be so appreciated.

Hi,

I am looking for the marriage record for Philipe Marquez and Maria
Fernandez. They married between March 1703 and September 1704. Their
children are baptized in Agua de Pau and so are his children from his first
marriage. I have looked in Matriz de Santa Cruz and N.S. Rosario but they
are not there. Can anyone suggest some other nearby churches that they may
have gone to for their marriage?

Thank you,

Thanks for posting about the sale. I missed seeing anything else about it.
I ordered for my first cousin once removed (I think that is the correct
relationship). He is full Azorean so it will interesting to see his results.

I had his Y-DNA and Family Finder done but did not get any close results.
So here is hoping for closer results.

a 4th to remote cousin. In actuality They are third cousins. I guess the
amount of DNA that matched was not enough because one or the other did not
inherit enough DNA to predict a 3rd cousin match.

Doug,

Contact me offlist. My guess is that something's screwy with their dates.
I do have someone in the the project that joined 01/01/0001. Which is
impossible.

Hi Cheri,

Well, that's a surprise about matches for me and not my parents, but sure
makes sense.

About the "new" matches, here is what I noticed and you can explain it any
way you want.

Starting from about last summer, I always made it a point to check in once
or more each month and every match to me was then assigned a "distant
cousin" connection or closer if I could figure it out.

Then this week I log in and found maybe 5 or so new connections and most
were dated at least a year ago. They just never appeared as my connections
until now.

I know it sounds strange, but am willing to bet some others are getting
this, too. They might not be paying attention to it, but it happened
probably to many. Same thing happened for my father's connections.

Doug,

That change was made quite a while ago (last summer maybe?) Anyways, at the
time they changed the algorithm, I made a post. Nothing else has changed.

Yes, you can match someone your parent doesn't match. If your dad had 2
small slivers below the threshold but they both get passed onto you and land
adjacent to each other, it now looks like a larger block and it will be
reported in your DNA results. They do have an FAQ on that.
