I also want to congratulate Cheri on her many years of hard work and her common
sense. She is always willing to help with questions.
I have been on this list from the beginning and know about Doug and his
reputation
I did a lot of genealogy for people over the years and at no cost for most. Now
I mostly lurk and am amazed at the growth of the group and how many people help
others.
Keep up the wonderful job!

[AZORES-Genealogy] List of Properties on Pico in 1517 owned by Jos Dutra Captain of Faial and Pico

2014-05-20 Thread Antonio Faria

Good morning,

I found this interesting link I want to share written in Portuguese I
found on the Nucleo Cultural da Horta site which lists the properties owned
on Pico by Jos Dutra. You really get a sense that he was in a business
partnership with Pero Anes do Canto who was also a big shot in the island
of Terceira. Why is this important you are wondering? Well these two guys
were very instrumental in the peopling of Pico island sending settlers from
Faial and Terceira to develop the island, and it was no small feat
considering that the island was hilly, rocky with shallow soil and had few
accessible ports.

it should read* suburb of this Villa. *Please excuse - it was late, yada,

I believe it's a girl. Look at all the "a's" (they all have tails). The

Looks like you will have to find a marriage... if possible.

Sam, thanks for starting this regarding Arline.

Arline, when you and "E" first helped me in 2006, I was a totally displaced
culturally starved newbie. I had no idea what my great grandfather and
grandmother's real names even were..you both freely gave me not only your
time and knowledge, but you gave me "connection" to my roots that has enriched
my life so much that I could never thank you enough. Suffice it to say you both
will always hold a very special place in my heart as will Cheri for her vision

2014-05-20 Thread bsei2816
I agree that it looks like a "filho" and wonder if the name might be
Mario. It seems every capital M on the record has the same large loops and
ends with a thick crescent at the lower right. This can be seen on the
third line where Sam Miguel is written, but the best example is in the
Cura's (Manuel?) signature at the end where the first letter looks nearly
identical to the first letter of the record. I'm usually just a lurker,
but this is the first time I think I see something different than what
others have posted so I thought I'd chime in.

Maria de Jesus de Bcor (Bettencourt?)

Hi Lee, you have done a lot of work on your cousin's family. Is this from
the Silva or De Mello line?

Anyway, my wife says this is a title "Alferes" which is low ranking
military officer. My dictionary translates it a 2nd Lieutenant and google
translates it as ensign.

Hi Herb,

Jose de Mendonca Pereira is the brother of my ancestor Dona Maria de
Mendonca. Our common ancestor is Miguel de Mendonca and Dona Catarina
Pereira, married in S. Jorge, Vila do Nordeste around November 1670.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Child of Anacleto de Arruda and Maria da Natividad SM Vila Franca do Campo

2014-05-20 Thread bsei2816
I see the point with the "a" and now agree that is probably is filha. I
still think it starts with an M like in the priests name at the end. Also
the mother's name "Maria" is just below the child's name and really looks
similar except that the "I" is not evident and the "a" is very
heavy-handed. Manoel might have it correctly with Maria.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Comparison of the Ethnic Percentages

2014-05-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Roberta Estes, genetic genealogist, blogged about the ethnic percentages
from the main DNA companies. She also delves into the Third Party
Admixture tools.

The article is long and can be perceived technical for some.

Towards the end, she (Roberta) says a couple of things to keep in mind:
* I look forward to the day when the reference populations are in the tens
of thousands, not hundreds. All of the tools will be far more accurate as
the data base is built, refined and utilized.

* ...I’ll personally feel a lot better about these kinds of results when
the underlying technology, data bases and different vendors’ tools mature
to the point where there the differences between their results are minor.

Back to me, Cheri. I think she summed it up well. It's getting better,
but it's not entirely there yet.

Roberta Estes' full article on the comparison of ethnic percentages can be
accessed here:

2014-05-20 Thread Lee
Hi Bill,,

The Graciosa line I'm working on for another of my cousins, whose direct male
of Mendonca's (later Mendence) settled in Calfornia. My cousins father is
still living at 90 plus years, he new very little about his family and now Ve
traced the one to the 1600's, and having fun doing it with the help of several
of list members.

Still working on the Silva/ De Mello family as well. The Silva direct one has
come a dead end at about 1837 though, he was ne of the many children who were
abandoned/given up, as for his wife's family though, they're all over the place.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Need help to solve a mystery for my uncle.

2014-05-20 Thread Helda Pritchard
Hello Everyone,

I am trying to help my Uncle find his aunt. As my mom and I have been doing
our family tree my Uncle who is in his 80's has asked if I could help find
his missing aunt. My Uncle's father and Grandfather had always talked about
"Tia Laura". His grandfather had her before he married so she was older
then the half brother. All we know is that Laura had gone to the states she
was born several years before her younger half brother. She was living in
California in the early 1920's as her half brother had visited her and sent
his father photos, one of them had two men and it said on the back these
are Laura's two oldest sons the boys were close to the their Uncles age.
Another clue we have is the year 1943 that was written on my uncles
grandfathers records but with no correspondence to why.
Doing research I found a Laura Moniz/Mitchell that is about the right age
and did live in California at about the right time. She had sons that would
be about the right age and she did die in 1943. These could all be
coincidences. I am hoping that maybe one of her family members is doing
family research and stumbles upon this. As Laura was a illegitimate then
her father would be listed as incongnito on her birth certificate. I would
be able to provide Laura's family with 5 generations back on the fathers
side. The woman I think could be the missing Laura is in some records
listed as Laura Moniz sometimes she is listed as Laura Mitchell. She was
married to a Frank P Mitchell they lived in Glouchester Mass and had
several children Joseph, Leonora (Nora), John, Anthony, Aurthur and Manuel.
She died on March 4th, 1943 in Alameda California.
Again I would happily scan the photo online to prove that this Laura is the
right one.

I know this is a long shot but you never know unless you ask.
Helda

Good morning,I found this interesting link I want to share written  in Portuguese I found on the Nucleo Cultural da Horta site which lists the properties owned on Pico by Jos Dutra. You really get a sense that he was in a business partnership with Pero Anes do Canto who was also a big shot in the island of Terceira. Why is this important you are wondering? Well these two guys were very instrumental in the peopling of Pico island sending settlers from Faial and Terceira to develop the island, and it was no small feat considering that the island was hilly, rocky with shallow soil and had few accessible ports. http://www.nch.pt/biblioteca-virtual/bol-nch15/n15-11.htmlAntonio --
