RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Joe Silvey - Canada
Antonio,You might like to contact the author. He's a native of Ribeirinha, Pico and at one time was subscribed to this list. Maybe still is.Based on his research and the information he provided me, I found the baptism of this Portuguese Joe about 10 years ago, but I never saw this article. There are people on this list who are related to this family, I believe, including his descendants. As you see from his father, he is one of the Simas descendants.Best I can tell, he took the name Silva, changed it to Silvia or Silvey, but it comes from his maternal grandfather who was a Silveira and is also my distant cousin.Doug da Rocha HolmesPico & Terceira Genealogist=Get ready for NFL Fantasy Football and join me in the newly created Azores Genealogist League. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Benevides, Teves, Oliveira Pimentel (Sao Miguel island maybe; no time period)
Hi Shirley, To answer your question, the Teves/Teve that I have all come from Ajuda Bretanha. John provided me with the birthdate of Teresa de Teves who was married to Matias Benevides. Teresa's parents were Andre Teves and Leonor de Sousa. I estimate that their birthdates were in the 1640's range. I think Andre could descend from Simao de Teves who settled in the Bretanha area a few generations before. But that is just a theory :) On Tuesday, June 24, 2014 12:31:25 PM UTC-4, Cheri Mello wrote: > > Repost for John C, itisme740 at aol.com > > < Teve. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] How accurate is death record information
The information on a death record (Azores, American, Canadian, etc, etc) is as accurate as the person who is providing the information. The decedent is, well, deceased. So the information is not coming from that person. It is coming from a spouse or another relative. If the death was sudden or unexpected, the informant may be so upset that they give misinformation. If the person was in poor health and death was expected, the information could be more accurate. And then there are those who outlived everyone and no one knew who that person's parents or birth place was. Marilyn, I think most deaths were recorded. There is no Social Security Death Index or California Death Index, or censuses to give a clue as to when someone died. Sometimes it may be noted on someone's marriage, so you'd know to look before the marriage of their kid. Other than that, you just have to search through them. Since this thread is about death record information, I would like to ask a question. Could someone tell me about Obitos? [AZORES-Genealogy] How accurate is death record information
They seem to range in accuracy. For the most part they will get the name right and their spouses name correct if they were married or widowed. The amount of info also seems to depend on the priest, and the year. Death recs in the 1600's and 1700's sometimes contain less info. "Generally" i have seen that children and young unmarried people have relatively accurate info with age, names of parents etc., and where they were from. For middle age or older individuals age accuracy seems to vary from what I have have seen, from accurate within the correct year , or up to 4 or 5 years off. Sometimes spouses of the deceased are not listed for some reason, as well as ages. Other times the records may not list the original place the individual was from if they did not know. In any case, the Obitos can be very useful in filling in info and calculating their approximate birth. [AZORES-Genealogy] Soccer in Azores (1915-1921)
Hi Karen, my dad who was born in the Azores played in the mainland in Lisbon on a professional soccer team called Belenenses. He also played for a team called Micalense in Ponta Delgada in his late teens. Later on when he was in his early 30s he played for the Lomba da Fazenda team in Nordeste. I have spoken with older folks Sao Miguel from that generation. They all tell me the same thing, that my dad Nicolau was probably the greatest soccer player to ever come from the Azores. This Ronaldo guy has nothing on him, but it was a much different era. Professional soccer back then was nothing like it is today. Just thought I would share. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading passport entry (Raposo/Mosteiros) please
Hi Mel, I wouldn't sell family tradition totally down the river. Even where there may be nothing more than "bragging rights," there is usually a certain amount of truth tied to that tradition. While it is possible that family members have changed or exaggerated the relationship of two persons to be other than it was, it may have also been merely a misinterpretation of a statement in a family story that wasn't fully understood. I've come across a term in early historical documents that could account for this misinterpretation. The term is "primos com irmaos" which was intended to stress a very close relationship between two children - perhaps first cousins who were the sons or daughters of two brothers or sisters, or half brothers or half sisters. Sometimes, we need to read between the lines to figure out what the author was trying to describe. RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Age in Death Record for Maria de Avila?
Hi Diane, On my Pereira side from Velas my gggrandmother, Isabel de Jesus, had her last child when in her 50'sshe had 11 or 12 children. I don't have all my records with me now since I'm in Pico, but I remember being amazed at the time at how old she was when giving birth the final time. I have 2 friends who had their 1st and only babies at 42. My mom and I were pregnant at the same timeI was 19 and she was 43. My brother and my son could be twins! Many very fertile women! I am trying to decipher the age of Maria at the time of death and also any other names that appear in the death record. I can read the deceased husband's name and a daughter, Catarina Dutra, but I can't read most of the rest of the record. The reason I want the age is that the listing for Maria on the My Heritage tree has her birth in 1635, but her first child isn't born until 1673 and her last child is born in 1689. That makes her 38 at the first birth and 54 for the last birth which seems unlikely. The birth record cited for Maria de Avila is at http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-CASTELOBRANCO-B-1624-1706/FAL-HT-CASTELOBRANCO-B-1624-1706_item1/P22.htmlI am not sure how the owner of the tree concluded that this is her Maria since there are at least 4 Marias on the page. I also don't know how she decided to look at the records for that time period for Maria since she does have a record for the husband Pedro that indicates he was baptized in 1650. It seems more likely that Maria would have a birth date closer to his. I am hoping that the age of Maria at death will point to a birth year I can search. I am reluctant to contact the owner of the tree directly with the these questions because I am not sure I can convey them in Portuguese which appears to be her language.
