[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help reading obituary
Hi Jemendonca642, This is what I could translate/understand: 1 - On Aug, 2nd, 1831 left . 2- the present life, Francisco Munis, 43 years old, 3- more or less, married to Maria Joaquina de Mello, 4- parishioners of Our Lady of Rosario de Lugar 5- from Achadinha, without receiving the last rites because 6- died (the word is not repente - seems something like Regectente but there is no such word) by the troops which entered this Island 7 - in behalf of Her (probably some kind of pronoun treatment for nobility used then - none that I can recognize)... Dona Maria II 8 -... rightful (verdadeira) queen of Portugal , Was buried at this same Parish 9 - being commended by me, João Antonio de Medeiros Raposo. 10 - his wife had the 11 - and had a Funeral Mass said in behalf of his soul - in his behalf and 12 - 20 more Masses for the underpriveleged and which I made 13 - this statement on the 4th day of the same month and hour above mentioned. the Vicar, João Antonio de Medeiros Raposo (probably some cousin of mine...lol) Hope it helps. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] St. Stephen's Cemetery list, Concord, CA
Carrie, If he does not have a stone, and he is not listed on FindAGrave, you can call the cemetery and they will most likely give you the information you are seeking. My brother and sister did not have a stone in the Catholic cemetery they are buried in and that office gave me the information (baby section) and grave numbers and we were able to dig and find the markers and my siblings and I got together and had stones put on their graves.this 50 years later but we wanted them to have a stone and our parents could not afford it at the time of their death. There is a Cesare Angella and Viola Angella buried at Memory Gardens Cemetery Concord. [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for Arruda Moniz, Coreia and Benavides in S. Miguel
Hi All, I am looking for the village where these people might have hung out. The names are Manuel Arruda Moniz, son of Francisco Moniz and Maria Correia. He married Catarina Benevides in about 1900. They have a child in 1904 in USA as a matter of fact all the children are born in USA, but I do not find their marriage in the USA. I’ve exhausted all the resources on line, I even checked the passports for the years 1903- 1904 when they said they arrived. No luck! So Arruda Moniz, Correia, and Benevides in S. Miguel. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] translation help after brides name indicating she is a widow
Thank you again. Does anyone else have my 6x great grandparents in their family tree? Bernarda de Oliveira AND Francisco Barbosa? I am trying to go back on Bernarda de Oliveira direct maternal line, which is also my direct maternal line and I am stuck, stuck, stuck. I would love to go back as far as possible on my direct maternal line (H6a1b2), ideally to the original Azorean settler and of course where that original direct Azorean maternal ancestor came from ... I can dream. So far my mtDNA matches are not close enough to figure that out ... YET. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Researching Antónia de São José, daughter of Manoel Jozé da Cunha and Maria de São José, Topo, São Jorge
Hi Eric: Sorry for the blank responses--have had too much caffeine this morning. Antonia was born 9 August 1812 before her parents were married. Her baptism record confirms the names of her mother and maternal grandparents. See top right http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1801-1815_item1/P197.html Then in 1817 ( top left) her parents, who were married in 1814 brought her to the church, for a ceremony to perhaps "legitimize" her?? The record verifies her DOB, but I cannot read what follows. We need a person more fluent to explain this record and notes in the margins of both records. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1815-1828/SJR-CH-TOPO-B-1815-1828_item1/P34.html Thanks for your help. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Antónia de São José, daughter of Manoel Jozé da Cunha and Maria de São José, Topo, São Jorge
Here is the marriage record for Manoel, her son ... On 10 January 1875, in Topo, São Jorge Island, Manuel José da Cunha, 32, single, shoemaker, natural son of Antónia de São José, married to Rosa Delfina 20, single, legitimate daughter of António de Sousa de Borba and Ana Delfina, all native of Topo, São Jorge Island. Witnesses were José Lopes Constantino da Silveira, landowner, and José Vieira de Sousa Enes, church’s treasurer, all living in the same village. Only the witnesses can write. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Researching Antónia de São José, daughter of Manoel Jozé da Cunha and Maria de São José, Topo, São Jorge
Eric, I'm answering you in both places! try looking at the baptisms right before her (Antonia's) marriage. Sometimes the baptism isn't found by the Priest (forgot to enter it in the book!) and the woman getting married has to be rebaptised right before her marriage. This happened in my greatgrandmom's case. In order to be married in the Catholic Church you had to be baptised and somehow recording her baptism may have been missed.
