[AZORES-Genealogy] Mother's first name on Santo Antonio, Sao Roque Pico baptism

2016-10-27 Thread Mary Bordi
This is a baptism from Santo Antonio, San Roque Pico...

Can anyone tell me the first name of the mother of the twins? Manuel and
Jose are the babies being baptized. It looks like the second part of the
mother's name is Maria do Coraçao de Jesus. I can't tell what the name
before Maria is. It's the full record on the left hand page.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PIC-SR-SANTOANTONIO-B-1815-1846/PIC-SR-SANTOANTONIO-B-1815-1846_item1/P78.html

The grown up and married Jose and his wife are godparents to my
ggrandfather and his nine siblings on Sao Jorge, so I am trying to see if
there is perhaps a family connection.

On Jose's marriage (in Rosais Sao Jorge) his mother's name looks the same
--still can't read the first part-- but instead of Maria for the second
part it looks like Hilaria. That record is here, left hand page:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-ROSAIS-C-1826-1849/SJR-VL-ROSAIS-C-1826-1849_item1/P92.html

My research is always Sao Jorge, not Pico, and I've never seen that name
there.

Thanks if you can help. And maybe there's someone looking for Jose who
apparently moved to Rosais. :)

Hi Sam,

Even though they don't have an official release date, if your program is having
problems you can let them know and they will advise you on what to do. When
they got back to me, they said my program needed to be updated and sent me the
instructions. Because I was using Mac 3, I qualified for the free upgrade.
There are options to run it on 3 family computers for a cost. I use it on one,
so I have no experience with the family share.  Very happy so far.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread 'Lillian Palko' via Azores Genealogy
Here is officially what Ancestry says about Family Tree Maker:

New Family Tree Maker Options

By: Kendall Hulet

Since our Family Tree Maker announcement last
December, we have continued to actively explore ways to develop and support
Family Tree Maker and ensure you have choices to preserve your work in ways
that matter to you.

Today, I am pleased to announce two options for desktop software that will
work with Ancestry.
Software MacKiev

Software MacKiev, with whom we have a long-standing relationship, is
acquiring the Family Tree Maker software line as publisher for both Mac and
Windows versions. Software MacKiev has been the developer of Family Tree
Maker for Mac for more than six years and is thrilled at the opportunity to
publish future versions of Family Tree Maker for Mac and Windows.

This new agreement means you will receive software updates and new versions
from Software MacKiev, and have the ability to purchase new versions of
Family Tree Maker from Software MacKiev as they are released. You will
have continued access to Ancestry Hints, Ancestry searches, and be able to
save your tree on Ancestry with Family Tree Maker moving forward.
RootsMagic

We have made an agreement with RootsMagic, a leading genealogy desktop
software program publisher, to connect Ancestry with the RootsMagic
software by the end of 2016. With this new relationship, RootsMagic can
serve as your desktop family tree software, while having access to Ancestry
hints, Ancestry searches, and the ability to save your tree on Ancestry.

We have heard your concerns and are working to provide the solutions you
requested. These new agreements will make it possible to preserve your work
on Ancestry and Family Tree Maker and enable future features and benefits
to help you discover your family history. *Be assured that Ancestry, in
cooperation with Software MacKiev and RootsMagic, will continue to support
you as you discover your family history.*
We ask for your patience as we work diligently through all the details to
make these solutions available. Be sure to check back on our blog as we
share more information about Family Tree Maker in the next few months.

[AZORES-Genealogy] HOUSEKEEPING: PLEASE READ: The Queue is Stuck

2016-10-27 Thread Cheri Mello
Some messages that get trapped in the queue are stuck! I try to go to
release them and it won't even let me see them! I've tried from my cell and
computer (and have rebooted both), but it's the Google Group interface. So
if your message doesn't appear, I'm sorry and I'll keep trying. It loads
eventually, but it's frustrating!!

DO NOT compound the problem and make it worse by sending the same message 5
times! That does not help and only makes me grumpy! Send it once please.
Thanks!

2016-10-27 Thread 'Denise' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Elaine,

The upgrade to MacKiev is free for existing customers. Go to their website and
click around for what you need. http://www.mackiev.com/

What I did was explain the issues I was having and my email was answered within
1 day. They provided me with the information I needed to download the upgrade
file. It took about 5 minutes to do. I like the FTM software and I am so glad
that they took over and addressed issues. The problems I was having are gone
with the upgrade.

Good luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese language (continental or European)

2016-10-27 Thread Cheri Mello
Well, they are kinda beta testing it. Right now, you can't sign up until
they get a couple of bugs worked out (a couple of pop-up explanations don't
work, a couple of explanations need to be put into English, stuff like
that).

They have a variety of things in one lesson. Most start out with a picture.
It will say "Um casa" and a voice will pronounce it. You'll see a picture
of a cat, a house, and a coat (3 pictures). You pick the picture. If you
pick the wrong one, the correct one lights up.

After a few of those, they have a fill-in-the blank. There are 2 kinds. If
they are introducing a word (I'll stick with "casa'") the picture of the
house will be there and it will say "Um casa" but the "casa" is in gray.
When you start typing over it, it goes away. That's when they introduce the
word. There's a group that will show the house and it will only say, "Um
_." You have to type "casa" all on your own.

Also, they have a few "drag-and-drop." The picture of the house will be
there. In English, the question will by typed, "It is a house." Below you
will see: casa É um. Well, they capitalized the first word of the sentence,
so you drag it in order to "É um casa."

Then there's a group with no picture (they are upping the ante!). It is
typed "É um casa." The voice says it (or you click on the speaker icon -
always click it.5 times if needed!!). 4 sentences are below: It is a
house, It is a coat, It is a cat, It is a car." You pick one. Then they
have the reverse too where the question says "It is a house" and you have
to pick from "É um casa," "É um casaco," "É um gato," etc. There is a
speaker icon by each.

Also, there's the aural part. That's the spoken only. It's really tough, at
least for me. It says, "Listen and type in Portuguese." The voice says "É
um casa." No pictures, no prompts, no nothing. There are a variety of male
and female voices. But sometimes, I swear they are saying, "Éumcasa," just
like how the priests sometimes write our records! I found out early that I
should have been clicking that speaker button EVERY time, even if I knew
the word "casa." I need to get used to the pronunciation. So sometimes I
click it 5 times. I clearly have a problem understanding the verb "to want"
(querer). I can read it, I can read it after it has been conjugated and I
can conjugate it by myself. But when it's the voice only questions, I mess
up. I'm also NOT able to distinguish when a word ends in a vowel and the
next word starts with a vowel. They just get mushed together. As annoying
as it was, I'm slowly getting better at them (and I think the guys slowed
the pronunciation down).

They don't always go in the order above. And you can retake a unit and get
a few different questions. And because the computer generates them, it can
put the aural part way too early in the unit. I was in the color unit, the
aural part came up and said "O pôr-do-sol é laranja." I heard the "é
laranja" but I didn't know what I was hearing for the first part. Later,
the computer gave me the pictures and that's when I saw the sunset and
realized what I heard.

Overall, it's pretty fun. The 2 guys are pretty helpful, but I'm thinking
they won't be answering as many of my questions when they roll it out
officially (I give them some teacher feedback...such as "If I'm in the
possessive unit, why did this question says "A nossa " and I typed in
"casa" instead of "A casa" and have me type in "nossa," the
possessive. And why isn't it __ casa, forcing me to type "A nossa"
since there's that article or whatever in front of "nossa." I asked them if
they roll their eyes when they see me in their inbox! LOL

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread Cheri Mello
Ralph,
As Denise posted, it's MacKiev who now publishes or owns Family Tree Maker.
They plan on keeping it current, which would be Windows 10, 64 bit. And the
same would be for the Mac version with their current Mac OS.

I'm not a computer programmer, but as technology improves, the programs
need to change with them. No company is going to spend the time in
developing a program to work on a 16 bit computer. I can't remember, but
that may be DOS days, without any type of Graphic User Interface (GUI).
It's like cars today. Many don't even need you to put a key in the
ignition. You just need that key fob with you and you push a button to
start the car. Should these car manufacturers have an ignition key as well?
And if they have the keyless with a push button and an key for the ignition
to start the car, why not include that crank to start the car (from the
1920s or something)? And and and and. Lots of technologies have changed
over time: the telephone, stoves/ovens/microwaves, washing machines, lots
of things. I don't know a single person who prefers to wash their clothes
on a wash board. I never hear anyone lamenting about wanting the old
telephone exchanges back. "Hello, operator, give me Thorndale-4567." Yeah,
it's annoying when a change comes in and time needs to be spent in learning
something new. We don't always like change and we grumble about it, but
it's technology and it will continue to evolve.

My genealogy program is "The Master Genealogist" (TMG). It is no longer
published. Is it on this new computer? Yes, I was able to load it and get
it to work *most* of the time (sometimes it doesn't load correctly into
Windows 10). Am I going to be using it in 5 years? Probably not, but I'd
like to. I know that there's some people in Australia working on making a
new one but they are a couple of years away. However, I have both Legacy
and RootsMagic on my computer and I periodically play around with them too.
The day TMG quits working I'll need to have a plan ready to go. And yes, I
have a preference of one over the other. It's my preference though. People
just need to pick the genealogy program that suits them best. That is the
best genealogy program for them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread 'Ralph Sellars' via Azores Genealogy
Elaine:
Welcome to the Club !
I dropped FTM "Ancestry" when Ancestry started making complicated changes to
it.   One example: recording of sources !
I bought and have the full Roots Magic version 7  and Legacy 8.0 version's and
found them both far more complex and difficult to load.  I found these are both
good and worth while products and have helpful staffing but having FTM I find
they are more complex than I need.
So to make a long story short after a lot of blood. sweat, and tears, and my
Geek Squad help,  I have reverted back to my FTM version 2006.   It still works
fine,  full fills my every need, is simple, self intuitive, so I intend to keep
it as long as it works.
My distress was created when my 32 bit computer died and I had to buy a new
one.  At that point in time all new computers were 64 bit.  My FTM would not
run on 64 bit so I had to upgrade FTM to 64.  When Ancestry purchased FTM they
developed a conversion program.  When my computer died they had developed their
own new version FTM and no longer supported the original FTM they purchased or
the conversion program.  Fortunately, my local Geek Squad were able to find a
way they had made the conversion in the past and were able to upgrade my copy
of FTM to 64 bit.
I have been using it since about 1990 .
In 2004 I used it to publish a158 page Genealogical History of my Sellars
Family Titled  "NEWFOUNDLAND SELLARS  Facts and/or Hearsay" using Family Tree
Maker V10.  This version of FTM not only  developed the individual reports and
charts it created an all name index and identified every page the individual
was noted on, it collated the reports and numbered the pages consecutively
starting with the table of contents through the dedication, preface,
acknowledgements, introduction and all the various reports and charts I elected
to use.  What more do I need ?  Nothing.  It is a GREAT PROGRAM ! (?App.?)
Copies have been distributed to many public entities, including public
libraries, historical societies, and town halls, which have been helpful to me
in collection of data. It is now out of print.
I would hope that some entity would take an interest in that original
Broderbund program and maintaining the original self intuitive program concepts
windows, etc., make and maintain the program to do things like making FTM run
on a 64 bit program rather than earlier 32 bit  or 16 bit program  or earlier.
I have heard that some company may have purchased from Ancestry the rights to
FTM ?   Which FTM ?
If any one on the list knows who the company is,  or what the current status is
I would hope they could share that information with those of  us who are caught
in this difficult position.
Good luck in your search.

 FTM support is supposed
to end the end of the year.  I have FTM 16.  Has anyone
changed to a different program or the new company who is
supposed to take over FTM users? Any other program to make
an easy switch?  I am looking for an easy switch and how to
do it and what I will and/or will not lose. Remember, I am
not a computer genius...or anywhere near it.

Hi Rosemarie,

When you get a chance could you look for my illusive GG-Uncle please? He went
by Tony Rose in the USA, but he was born Antonio Goulart DaRosa, on 22 July
1870, on Faial. Some of the brothers used Goulart some used Rose after they
arrived in the USA. Tony was the only one to go to CA (in the Merced area as
far as I know). The others all stayed in Massachusetts. I have never been able
to find Tony's death. He had a wife, Maria Ignacio de Mello, from Graciosa.
That's all I know about her. I got her information off of their marriage record
in MA before they went west. Thanks so much! I do appreciate your help! Have a
great day!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Trouble reading this record

2016-10-27 Thread 'Marcio' via Azores Genealogy
Dispensation is by afinidade ( which is by marriage) being first degree means
that one of the engaged was married before to a sibling of the new spouse. In
this case, the bride was a widow of bernardino Jose de Moura, who was brother
of new husband Joaquim Jose de Moura.

You should never find first degree of consanguinidade cause that would mean a
pair of siblings getting married to each other. I have seen first degree and
second degree of consanguinidade which is an uncle/aunt marrying a nephew/niece.
With that said if you find just first degree it should be by afinidade and
never consanguinidade.

Hope I was able to clarify.

Do you know if there are any children for Antonio Pereira and Ana Benevides

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread Theresa Entin
Hello, to all of the people who are using Family Tree Maker, I have used it
for many years and just recently learned of something in the program that
usually fixes any of the glitches it has. Also, on Facebook they have a Family
Tree Maker page that gives advice and also updates to it.

This is the thing that you should do often with the FTM program. Under the
TOOLS pull down menu, there is a COMPACT FILE. You should compact the file if
the program crashes, or if you are having issues with uploading it to Ancestry.
Or just as a good thing to do.

When you compact the file, it will give you a % of space it compacted. It
should compact to 0.0%. You may have to compact the file a couple of times.
Even though I compact all the time now, I usually have to do it 2 times before
I get it 0.0%.

If you use Facebook, it is a good page to join because the programers from
MacKiev monitor it and answer very quickly if you have an issue.
