[AZORES-Genealogy] John Enos Goulart born in 1883 Feteira Faial

2016-10-29 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Hi John,
I am starting a new thread since we are talking about our ancestors rather than
the Rosemarie's Merced records, which is the  thread that prompted us to
connect.
I am responding to your email from earlier today in which you said:

Deb,
My grandfather John Enos Goulart was born 1883 in Feteira Fayal. He settled in
California, also he had brothers that stayed in Massachusetts.
John Goulart

Do you have info about your grandfather beyond his birth date and place of
birth? I ask because I think I found his baptism info.  I have made a stab at
translating the record  and have figured out a fair amount of the key info, but
not all of it. (I am new to reading Portuguese.)  If you read Portuguese, I can
send you the link.  If you don't, we can ask the folks in the group for their
help filling in the blanks.
I think there is a good chance we are related.  I will have to keep digging to
make sure.  If I have the correct baptism, your grandfather Joao (John) is the
son of Jose Francisco Goularte and Luisa (Emilia?).  Info about Sao Mateus,
Pico. follows her name. Not sure if she was living there or was born there, but
I have a number of folks there as well.
Your paternal 2nd great grandparents are Joao Homem Goularte and Maria Josefa.
I have five men named  Joao Homem Goularte in my tree. I think this is where we
might find our link.
Your maternal 2nd great grandparents are Antonio Ignacio Pereira and Ana (?)
Luiza.
That is far as I have gotten.  Let me know if this info is useful to you or if
I am re-inventing the wheel for you.  Also, have you had your DNA tested? That
would be another way we could see if we connect.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Deb

John,
Do you have info on the Godparents of the people you listed?  We might be able

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FARIA from Contra Costa, CA

2016-12-24 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
By any chance, are your Faria family members related to an A. F. (Antone) Faria
family in San Leandro?   The San Leandro Faria family lived on Washington
Avenue.  I am trying to connect A.F. Faria's wife to my family tree.  I only
know her as Mrs. A.F. Faria, but do know she was the daughter of Joaquim
Silveira and his wife, Maria Luisa.  The Silveira family lived in Rhode Island
before coming to Alameda County, CA.

Hi Sam,
I don't know where this Faria family is from.  It is one of the things I am
hoping to figure out.  What I do know is that Mrs. A.F. Faria's sister, Maria
Luisa, married Manuel Francisco Martins de Azevedo (my great uncle), who was
born in Feteira, Fayal.

Hi Rosemarie,
I attended an afternoon session with Joao Ventura a few years ago at San Jose

Something different?  More detail?
I am planning on attending the roundup.  I just need to decide which sessions
to attend.

Hi All, Just thought I would remind everyone of the DAR Genealogy Ancestor
Roundup to be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 in Seaside California. I will be
presenting a two hour class on Portuguese Research (what is available to us and
how to read the records). I'm attaching the flyer. Please contact me privately,
at the email below, for any more info. If you do decide to make the trip please
let me know that you are coming as I am making handouts for the class. So far,
it looks like we have about 10 from the list coming. This is also a nice chance
to meet those that we 'talk' to on the list and also others doing Portuguese
research. There are many other classes available expecially two classes on DNA.
It's really a fun day of learning and networking with others. Hope to see you
there!!

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA connection with Pat Girard via Jose Francisco dos Ramos Martins and Maria Inacia

2017-01-04 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Cheri
In 2013, Pat Girard and I made an email connection through the Azores group.
We were able to figure out our cousin relationship via a paper trail. Pat's DNA
was posted to the FTDNA site in October.  We are a match at 180 cms.  Any
recommendations on what we should do next?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help interpreting a Note on University of Minho site: Feteira Francisco Jose Martins

2017-03-16 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
I have a questions about the  content of a page on the University of Minho site
for Francisco Jose MARTINS (1815-?):  it can be found at:
http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=FETEIRA;lang=pt;p=francisco+jose;n=martins;oc=1

I am interested in the note at the bottom:
NOTA: Foram expostas na casa deste casal, a Amélia e a Maria, filhas de pais
incógnitos e falecidas a 17 de Agosto de 1843 e a 6 de Fevereiro de 1843.
Google's translation is:
NOTE: They were exhibited in the house of this couple, Amelia and Maria,
daughters of unknown parents and deceased on August 17, 1843 and February 6,
1843.
I know that " foram expostas" doesn't mean "they were exhibited." I believe it
states they were "foundlings." Am I accurate to assume that the note is saying
that Francisco and his wife Mariana Rosa brought into to their home these two
children, who died in 1843? is there any additional significance to this note?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help interpreting a Note on University of Minho site: Feteira Francisco Jose Martins

Hi Linda,
Thanks for your help. The distinction between "found" at the house and "taken
in" is a significant one.  I will check the obitos and baptismos as well.

Hi Deb,

I think the connotation of the note is that the two children were found at the
couple's house and not necessarily taken in by them.  Perhaps a native speaker
could shed some light on the nuances of the meaning.  Otherwise, one could
check their obits for their ages and then their baptismal records to see what
they say.

hope that helps,

:)

I am interested in the note at the bottom:

Google's translation is:
NOTE: They were exhibited in the house of this couple, Amelia and Maria,

1843.
I know that " foram expostas" doesn't mean "they were exhibited." I believe it
states they were "foundlings." Am I accurate to assume that the note is saying
that Francisco and his wife Mariana Rosa brought into to their home these two

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I had to share this with you! Four years ago I saw a post on the Azores Google

excited because I did and it had been a dead end. I contacted Deb McCabe and we
compared notes. We were convinced that we probably were 3rd cousins. Fast
forward to FTDNA. Yes, we are 3rd cousins! We are meeting in person for the
first time in 2 weeks. I'm so excited because she is the first living relative
I have found on my father's side. Previously the only paternal relatives I have
ever known were my father, my grandfather (who died when I was 5) and my aunt

Thank you Cheri, I couldn't have done this without you. You are forever in my

[AZORES-Genealogy] Did your relatives live in Oakland, CA near 98th Ave and San Leandro St.?

2017-04-09 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
My grandparents/parents lived on Denny St. in Oakland from c. 1910- c.1953.  I
started researching the neighbors and discovered some are relatives.  Did any
of you have relatives in the area of 98th Avenue and San Leandro Street? If so,
I would love to figure out our connection.  I would like to write a book about
the families and the journey that brought them to the neighborhood. Here is a

My grandfather came from Feteira, Faial.  My grandmother's family came from Sao

are also from the Azores and Madeira islands and a number spent time in Hawaii

[AZORES-Genealogy] help acquiring records from the Madeira archives

Hi George,
You were kind enough to help me a number of years ago.  I have more records I
need.  While they are on ancestry.com, the company hasn't updated the links
since the Arquivo changed its url's.  I keep waiting, but I'm getting
impatient.  I wanted to check if (1) you have time to get some records for me,
including some passaportes; (2) what are charging for your work?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA Groupon

2017-04-09 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Bob,
If you"purchase" on Groupon, you are ordering the "group coupon."  You will
asked how many coupons you want.  There typically is a max.  When you are ready
to buy, you place your order.  That means that you have to request a purchase
by the deadline, but you typically have 90 days to buy.
When I looked at this offer, there is a $12.95 shipping fee and a $1.00 Groupon
fee.  It says on the order page that you can re-order coupons after the 90 days
passes.  So it sounds like some sort of ongoing deal.
Hope this helps.

Good! All these relatives want to help you stack the deck in your favor. Once
you get the results, you will see what a big help it will be.As for the
Groupon, I do not know what FTDNA negotiated with them. So if the date says
Monday the 10th, then I guess it's Monday the 10th.DNA Day is the latter half
of April. The last 3 or so years, FTDNA ran a brief sale in honor of DNA Day.
They don't tell is project admins if they are doing it this year or what is on
sale. So maybe they will do it again. I guess we play wait and see.

I've never used Groupon. Someone else explained how it works (from the user
end).

I'm wondering if FTDNA makes a deal with Groupon (for example, through April
30th). So when we get to April 28th or 29th, Groupon say only a couple of days
remaining. Then I wonder if FTDNA renews it. Weird that the Groupon "expires"
and then there's another.

Anyways, sounds like a great way to pick up Family Finder at a discounted
price!  Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Baptism Index_Feteira Faial_CCA book that covers1845-1860

2017-07-03 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
I was looking at the Feteira, Faial baptisms for 1845-1860 on CCA and ranacross
what appears to be an index of births.   The alphabetical list starts on page
246 and ends on page 254.  My guess is that the list is an index of the
children's names followed by their fathers' names.  Is that right?  I don't
know what follows the fathers' name though.
It is the first time I have seen anything like this and thought I would share.
Excuse me if it a "newbie" find that everyone knows about.

Thanks, Cheri.  I will reach out to Kalani.
Just as a point of clarification as I may not have been clear enough. I wasn't
trying to open the file.  I was trying to download it, which my computer can't
do because I evidently don't have the software for it.

Hi Rico,
I am Deb McCabe, the Deb that my prima Pat mentioned in the post you
referenced.  I wanted to reach out to see if we can figure out if we are
related.
I have two possible connections in my tree.  Either could be the Rosa Silvia
Martins (aka Rosa Silveira Martins and Rosa Margarida Martins) you mentioned as
the mother of your  Rosa (born 1898 and married to Rufino Silveira de Faria).
The first Rosa Silvia Martins possibility is:RosaBorn in Feteira, Faial in
1860.Daughter of Jose Francisco Martins and his first wife,  Maria Felicia do
Coracao de Jesus.  Jose is my paternal great grandfather.
The second Rosa Silvia Martins possibility is:RosalindaBorn in Feteira, Faial
in 1874.Daughter of Jose Francisco Martins and his second wife, Virginia
Emilia.  Jose Francisco and Virginia Emilia are my  paternal grandparents.
Unfortunately,  I don't have any info on either of these women.  Nevertheless,
I wanted to reach out in case, as you were looking through the records, you saw
any of these names.
Also, if you know any other names of relatives in the Azores or who came to
the U.S., perhaps we can figure out if there is a connection by starting with
them.  Also, Pat and I both have had our DNA tested.  If you take the FTDNA
test, we will know for sure.
Please do keep me posted.  Best of luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Did your relatives live in Oakland, CA near 98th Ave and San Leandro St.?

2017-12-19 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Without more details/clues about your family, I am at a loss.
I asked about the census info because that would help us pinpoint whether your
relatives were in the Denny Street area, specifically, or in nearby
neighborhoods, or, just as likely, in another part of Oakland.

Can you share any  info on the names, birth years, and their relationship to
one another of your Rebello relatives who might have lived in the Denny Street
area?  If I knew that, I could look them up in the census.
Do you, by chance, have a tree on Ancestry or Family Search I could look at?

Perhaps if you know which village in Faial your family lived and the
names/dates of the family members who came from there, we could use that as a
starting place.
Oakland had a large percentage of the Portuguese population in CA for decades
and, as you may know, the same first names (Manuel, Joao/John, Jose/Joseph,
Antonio and Maria were very, very common) and were used within and across
families.  Likewise, the same last names show up on and across the Azores and
Madeira islands and, therefore, across Oakland.
As much as I love a mystery and would like to help, looking for an Unknown
first name, with a last name of Robello, who is of an unknown age and who lived
in Oakland at some time just isn't enough info for me to see if there is a
connection.
If you would like to provide me with any additional info, I wouldbe happy to
see what I could figure out.  If it just isn’t a good time foryou to look
through your myriad files and papers to provide me some clues, youmay want to
hang on to my info and perhaps reach out again in the future.
Best, Deb

2017-12-19 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
 Hi Gordon,
Thanks for reaching out.
Before my relatives lived in the Elmhurst section of Oakland, they were in the
Melrose district for a few years and before that near 5th-10th Streets.
Adeline and MacArthur is a distance north and east of those neighborhoods. So
the link wouldn't be an obvious one.
I am a bit confused by your statement that your family came from "Via Das
Lajes, pico Faisal."  I am by no means an expert on geography of the Azores
islands, so my apologies in advance if I am speaking out of turn.  But it is my
understanding that Pico and Faial/Fayal are two separate islands and that Lajes
do Pico is a regional area/municipality on the island of Pico.    Am I,
perhaps, misunderstanding?
My Faial relatives did migrate to the island from Pico some generations earlier
than those who came to Oakland.
If you have any details to share that could help me start hunting to see if
there is a connection, please let me know. It is always fun to sleuth,
especially if the sleuthing leads to new relatives.
Best, Deb

Hi Mary,
My only known "Evangelho" on my tree is Mateus Ferreira Evangelho. I am
connected through his daughter, Beatriz Maciel (? - 1712 Sao Mateus, Pico).
She is the first wife of my 5th great grandfather, Manuel da Costa Goulart

Thanks for reaching out.

I have lots of Evangelho's from Pico in my tree.  The Manuel Pereira Evangelho
born 18 June 1819 is my 3rd great grandfather.  The others on the list are all
related too, I have to look at the tree to determine exactly how.  Are any of
these the same as your Manuel Pereira Evangelhos?  If so, we may have common

[AZORES-Genealogy] visiting the Azores in May

2019-03-14 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Four of us are visiting the Azores in May for  two weeks. Any recommendations
on where to stay on Sao Miguel, Pico, or Faial?   I would appreciate your
opinion on whether to rent a car or to hire a driver on each island.  Any names
for either?
I want to go to the villages where my ancestors lived. We also want to enjoy
the food and do some walks/hikes.   Anything you would recommend?
I would appreciate any thoughts you can share.

If you know where you are going, rent a car. Or you can go to the taxi stand,
ask for an English speaking driver, tell him where you want to go. Ask him how
long it will take to get there and back, and an hour (or whatever to sightsee).
If he says 4 hours, ask him what he makes in 4 hours and pay him that. Many
people on this list have kept the names and numbers of specific taxi drivers
who kinda double as tour guides. I'm sure they will speak up.
I don't know which freguesias your ancestors were from. Sao Miguel is the
largest island, 40 miles or so by 10 miles or so. If your ancestors are from
the western end of the island, stay in Ponta Delgada. If they are from the
northern side, you may want to say in Ribeira Grande. So it just depends.

Others with Pico and Faial connections will probably have recommendations. Good
luck and enjoy! Cheri

Hi Phillipe
I have sent a follow-up email to the Azores Genealogy group website.  THANK YOU
SO MUCH for questioning my work, which led to the correction. I can't figure
out how I made the error since I have  copies of the correct Portuguese
documents showing Guimar as the correct wife and mother and not Ana Maria.
Somewhere along the line I obviously transcibed something wrong
My questions to you are (a) Did you look because you thought we were related?
or (b) Were you just curious? I am hoping the answer is (a).
Either way, I appreciate your help.

2019-04-16 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Hi Phillipe,
I will answer your questions in the body of your message to make sure I don't
miss anything.  I received info on my MARTINS line a number of years ago.  I
paid the researcher Joao Ventura to do the work because I was new to Azorean
genealogy.   I will provide you the information I have in the records he sent
to me and note places where I wasn't concentrating well enough to keep
everything straight.  (See below.)

 Hi Deb,
It's not an error. In his marriage record, the mother of João Francisco is ANA
MARIA, and not Guiomar Felicia.  YOU ARE CORRECT AS SHOWN ON JOA'S RECORD
BPARJJG/PRQ/HORTA/FETEIRA/B/1788 .     i HAD IN MY ANCESTRY RECORDS THAT
GUIOMAR FELICIA WAS NOT JOAO'S MOTHER BUT THAT ANA MARIA WAS.  WHEN YOU WROTE,
I LOOKED BACK AND SAW IN JOAO V'S RECORD THAT THE MOTHER WAS NOT ANA BUT
GUIOMAR.  UNFORTUNATELY, I RECORDED THE UPDATE ON THE WRONG GENERATION.  AT
LEAST THAT'S THE BEST EXPLANATION THAT THIS TIRED BRAIN CAN OFFER.
Your ancestors are mysterious. There is not a couple Francisco Martins * Ana
Maria na Sé de Angra. There is one in Santa Luzia married on 1741. But João
Francisco deceased with 50 years old, in 1818. Then it would be born around
1768 +/- 5 years.  CORRECTI didn't find a João son Ana Maria in Santa Luzia.
And in the Sé, I found only a João son of Ana Maria and unknown father on 15
novembre 1768 (img 153). Isn't possible his father do a legal recognition later
? I don't know.   SORRY TO HAVE YOU THINK THIS MUCH WHEN I MADE AN ERROR.
But, why have you change Ana Maria in Guiomar Felicia? Do you have some
informations about that ? Frequently the 2nd mother's name change : Ana Maria,
or Ana da Conceição But not Ana in Guiomar.
I am not related with this family, neither my wife whose family is from Ilha
Terceira. But José Rodrigues Quartilho, Guiomar's father, is a descendant of
João de Aguiar his 5th grandfather. And the family of João de Aguiar is
described in th Volume V of my collection of books "Familias da Ilha Terceira".
I am completing it to a 3rd edition.  I HAD NOT HEARD OF YOUR BOOKS AS I AM NEW
TO RESEARCHING TERCEIRA.  HOW WONDERFUL THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN ON THE WORK.
I HAVE LOOKED THROUGH BOOK 6 OF SAUDADE DE TERRA .  I FOUND MARTINS BUT COULD
NOT MAKE A CONNECTION TO MY MARTINS. DO YOU SEE ANY OTHER CONNECTIONS TO
MARTINS IN YOUR WORK BEYOND GUIOMAR'S FATHER?
ARE YOUR BOOKS ONLY IN PORTUGUESE?
I am not a profesSional genealogist. Only a scientific researcher who publish
his work, without to sell my datas (except the prices of the books given by the
publisher  and it's cheaper than a profesional). I AM NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY
THIS LAST SENTENCE. DO YOU SELL YOUR BOOKS DIRECTLY TO CUSTOMERS? I SEE THEY
ARE AVAILABLE ON AMAZON.  ARE YOU SAYING THAT AMAZON MAKES MONEY BUT YOU DON'T?

WHEN WOULD THE 3RD EDITION BE AVAILABLE?
THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO HELP ME.  I HAVE BEEN VERY BUSY AT WORK AND HOME.
I AM STARTING TO REALIZE THAT I SHOULDN'T WORK ON IT WHEN MY BRAIN IS SO
TIRED.  BE ACCEPT MY APOLOGY FOR CAUSING YOU TO DO UNNECESSARY WORK.
I hope my msg help you. Best regards.

My family is primarily from Faial, then Pico. We will be visiting those islands

Cheri, Thanks for replying.  Your experience was what I was afraid of.
Luckily, I  do have two or three of the dates to provide.  From your
experience, would it be easier to try the Civil Registry in person or to write
and request the documents?  I am asking because I want to make the best use of
my travel time.
Again, thanks.

How fluent are you in Portuguese? When you go there, the clerks my not be

Maybe your clerk does genealogy and will do a small search based on your range.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Evangelho surname

2016-08-22 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
Thanks for the email, Prima!
It would be great to figure out just how many generations our relations
overlap.  I made a mistake in my earlier email about my 6th great grandparents
after the Evangelho name caught my interest since I remembered them from my
tree.
My 5th great grandparents are Manuel da Costa Goulart Gigante and Maria
Pereira.  So we are related at that  juncture.
My 4th great grandfather is the couple's son, Jose Pereira Maciel (1719-1774),
who marrived Joana Maria.
My 3rd great grandfather is Antonio Pereira Maciel (1762-1819,) who married
Maria Antonia.
My 2nd great grandmother is Antonio and Maria's daughter, also named Maria
Antonia (1812-1894), who married Bento Pereira da Costa.
My 1st great grandmother is Virginia Emilia (1844 - ?), who married Jose
Francisco Martins (1828 - ?).   Virginia was born, like her siblings, in Sao
Mateus, Pico.  Her husband was born in Feteira, Faial.  I have not been able to
find death info for the couple.
My grandfather is Antonio Francisco Martins, who married Elisa Abreu after the
couple separately immigrated to the U.S.  He came from Feteira, Faial.  She was
from Sao Martinho, Madeira.  The married in Oakland, CA.
Do you have a tree on Ancestry? Have done any of the DNA tests?
I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yes, indeed!    I do have Matias Ferreira Evangelho in my tree and his wife

Deb,
CITCEM shows Matias and Domingas as parents of Beatriz not of Manuel. (You may
need to check their marriage record 11 July 1701 to verify parentage.)  No
birth dates are shown since records start in 1673 and their birthdates would
have preceded that date. Domingas reportedly died in 1701 before Beatriz'
wedding.

These are not my direct ancestors but I have an extensive number of lines
located in Sao Mateus and Candelaria, Pico. So, feel free to ask any questions
for families in those areas and I'll do my best to answer.

Deb,
No to the names Goes and Pinheiro. No to the place Piedade. Yes to everything
else. However, most non-religious names tend to be combinations such as Costa
Goulart so more info is needed to pin down specific connections.
My grandmother's lineage is primarily Candelaria, Sao Mateus and a few from Sao
Joao, Madalena and Lages. All on Pico. So, if you have any questions related to
Candelaria and Sao Mateus where most of her ancestors lived, I may be able to
help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] help with 1837 baptismo n Sao Mateus, Pico- Emilia, daughter of Jose Silveira Homem and Angelica Luiza

2016-09-03 Thread 'Deb McCabe' via Azores Genealogy
I am very new to reading and translating Portuguese.  I am hoping someone can
help me fill in the blanks on this record.  It is the record of my 1st cousin,
3 times removed.  It can be found at:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PIC-MD-SAOMATEUS-B-1836-1842/PIC-MD-SAOMATEUS-B-1836-1842_item1/P39.html
It is the record on the ]upper left side.

I believe the record states:
Emilia, legitimate daughter of Jose Silveira Homem and his wife Angelica Luiza.
The granddaughter's paternal grandparents are Jose Silveira Homem and his wife
Maria Joaquina, both deceased; maternal [granddaughter] of Jose Pereira,
deceased, and his wife Ana Bernarda, natives of this parish of Sao Mateus of
Pico.
I can't read the next word/words; I think the doc says something about her birth
on the 3rd of May, 1837
I can't read the end of the line after the 1837 date or the next few lines
until we get to Emilia's Godfather
Godfather Manuel Homem Goularte of this parish and her Godmother Antonia Maria
Carlota, single, a resident of Candeleria.
I can't read the rest about Alexandrina.
I would really love to hear what I am doing correctly and incorrectly. Thanks
in advance to anyone who is willing to take the time to help.

I think I'll go for Emilia on the LOWER Left, correct?

You've got most of it right. I don't know why there's the scribble scrabble
with her birth, but I believe it means born on 3 May 1837 and baptized on the 7
of the same month and year was baptized in this reference parish by me the
Vicar Vig.ro of the above something. You got the godfather right. After the
godmother, in Candelaria it says and of Emilia, Alexandria, sister of the
baptized.

I see she was a twin to Antonia. Yet there's no baptism for Antonia adjacent to
Emilia's. It looks like it says obit next to Antonia's crossed out name. And in
the text, it started to say godfather of both, but that was crossed out. I'd go
look for a death of an Antonia (could be Antonio) right around that time period.

I didn't find the death for the Antonia/o in 1837. Weird, it says Emilia has a
twin (gemios (sp) which is crossed out). And what looks like obito by the
twin's name. Something is weird with this record.

My 5th great grandparents are Manuel da Costa Goulart Gigante and Maria

My 2nd great grandmother is Antonio and Maria's daughter, also named Maria

My 1st great grandmother is Virginia Emilia (1844 - ?), who married Jose

Mateus, Pico.  Her husband was born in Feteira, Faial.  I have not been able to

My grandfather is Antonio Francisco Martins, who married Elisa Abreu after the
couple separately immigrated to the U.S.  He came from Feteira, Faial.  She was

Deb,
CITCEM shows Matias and Domingas as parents of Beatriz not of Manuel. (You may
need to check their marriage record 11 July 1701 to verify parentage.)  No
birth dates are shown since records start in 1673 and their birthdates would
have preceded that date. Domingas reportedly died in 1701 before Beatriz'
wedding.

These are not my direct ancestors but I have an extensive number of lines
located in Sao Mateus and Candelaria, Pico. So, feel free to ask any questions
for families in those areas and I'll do my best to answer.

Hi Mary,
I am not sure if there is any sort of connection, but I thought I would share
the info I have in my tree.
I have a Matias F. Evangelho married to a Domingas Pereira. I do not have birth
or death dates for either.
They had a daughter,  Beatriz Maciel, who died in 1712. She was married to
Manuel da Costa Goulart Gigante. He was born in 1683.  He died 5 February 1731
in Sao Mateus, Pico.  I am wondering if they had other children and that one of
them might have been Domingos Pereira Evangelho, the name you mentioned in your
query.
Have you had your DNA tested?  We might discover if we are a match that way.
Please keep me in mind if you find any information and I will do the same.

 Mary,
I'm not sure if you've received an answer to your query, but I'll add my two
cents for what its worth (assuming you won't mind.) If you look at line four
you'll see the word "onze" meaning eleven. It's a bit confusing as the
abbreviated word freguesia on line 3 shows the "g" coming down into the fourth
line. After seeing this, I also went back to my book "Evoluçao Demográfica de
Trés Paróquias do Sul do Pico" and then to the CITCEM website to double check
the book. Both of these sources also show the eleventh as the date. Word of
caution, CITCEM is based on the book so its not a second independent source.
I've attached the webpage source for you to peruse. Hope this helps.
Gayle
P.S. I have several lines from Sao Mateus, although your folks aren't mine. If
you ever want to compare notes, let me know. I might be able to help. Also, I
have a considerable number of ancestors from neighboring Candelaria, where I've
done a lot of extractions for marriages and deaths, if you connect into this
freguesia and want assistance.

Any assistance anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.  I joined

Thank you.
This is what I have for names:
Manuel P. Melo: Born in Teatro Novo, Capelas, St. Michael, Azores, he was the
son of the late Joao and Margarida (de Paiva) Melo and the brother of the late
Maria dos Anjos Paiva Medeiros and Jose Paiva Melo.
Again, not much but if there is anyone out there who may know something please
share!

You can match on paper and not with DNA. Sometimes 2 individuals do not inherit
enough DNA to be reported as a match.
Hope this helps, Cheri

Monica,
Thank you for the generous offer. As Cheri Mello mentioned in an earlier email
to me (see below), the DNA doesn't show a connection; but that far back, it
doesn't mean I am not related to the Paiva line.  I was following up on an
email from my cousin Maria Sue Luna (see below) to Nelia, stating that a match
is likely on Maria's (our) Martins Correia Bettencourt line.
If you are willing to share info, I gladly would examine a paper trail.  While
not proficient in Portuguese, I am able to pick out a lot of the key info in
genealogy documents.

 DBM,
I have mapped out the Paiva's in capelas as far as the records go up to. We are
probably a match as well.
To confirm a paper trail, you  will need to locate information/dates before
1911. Is that an issue for you?
Hope to hear from you.
Monica  :)
