[AZORES-Genealogy] Photography Studios in Acores

2012-07-15 Thread Diane Lavely
Hi all. I'm looking for suggestions. I have several very old family
photos which were taken in The Azores. I'm looking for more information
about the photos. Photographer's name, etc are as follows:

1.Photographia Artistica, Rua Esperanca - No. 19 - S. Miguel, Acores.
Comment printed on back also says "conservam se as duche,." I think. Also
on the back there are angels, and what looks almost like a coat of arms in
green and gold.

2. Severini Joao D'Avellar, (Angra ao Heroism) 40 Rus De Santo Espirito.

3. Photographis Artistica de A.J. Raposo, Rus de Esperanca 19, S. Miguel,
Acores.

The only hint I see is S. Miguel - - which is huge for me, as I'm still
trying to determine which island(s) to research. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated!!

I also have many from photographers in Boston and Quincy, MA - - & have
written to the MA Historical Society for assistance with these. Thanks.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Finder Match - Lavely, Kaminsky, Pimentel

I'm sorry about the Gedcom. I'm a computer novice. I have now ordered
FTM, and will have someone help me install it when it arrives, so that I
can create a GEDCOM. Currently, all I have is my tree in .
I believe that I sent you an invitation, if you are interested. It is a
very large tree. However, the line we're talking about starts with me - -
my mother - - my maternal gm (mom-s mother) - - my mother's maternal
grandparents. I look forward to trying to figure out the connection!!! I
am very excited!!! Thanks. Diane

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Testing companies

2012-06-01 Thread Diane Lavely
Hello again, Cheri. You may recall that I had DNA testing done on my
mother - - hoping to find out information on her grandparents sho were from
the Azores. Little info resulted. I am also looking for information on my
father's great grandfather. We had discussed requesting my uncle do DNA
(as the only living relative of that generation). However, he did not
respond to my request and has subseuently passed. Now, I am considering
having my brother do the DNA for that purpose. Any advice? Thanks.
Diane.

2011-07-17 Thread Diane Lavely
Cheri - - I'm looking through the old pictures, with the names that my
grandmother has on them. I found the following:
Mary Costa - - sister of three boys, Enos, Andrew and Joseph (taken at
Bussell, Adams Bldg., Quincy, MA.
Teresa Costa (Mary's sister) taken at Bussell as above)
(notes on the pics say that both Mary and Teresa were "old
maids.")
Enos Costa lll (taken at Beckford Photo, 43 Winter St., Boston, MA.
Enos Costa (which one, it doesn't say) - - "son of Joseph Soares'
sister" (taken at Bekford's Photo Studio,
  43 Winter St., Boston, MA
Joseph - - "son of Enos Costa Jr." (taken at Beckford Photo as above).
Joseph Costa "brother of Enos." (also taken at Beckford's in Boston,
MA.
Filomena Evangello & Matilda Sears (Soares) (taken at Cook's
Photographer, Tremont St., Boston, MA
Enos (Costa?) taken at Bussell's in Quincy, MA.
Enos in Quincy again (no photographer name on photo)
Thomas M. Soares (taken by J. Frazier Photographer, 111 Royal St.,
opposite St. Louis Hotel, New Orleans

And a few others which have only the following information:
tin type glued onto backboard which has the name, "Charles Jiereira de
Sboza"
tin type glued onto backboard which had the name, "Jose Jiereira de
Sboza"
An old picture of a man taken at McCosker, 85 Hanover St., Boston, MA.
2 photos, both of a woman, taken ag Severino Joao D'Avellar, 49 Rue De
Santo Espirito 49
1 photo of a boy taken at Photogrphia Artistica De A..J. Raposo, rua de
Esperanca-49, St. Miguel, Acores
1 photo of a young man taken at Photographia Artistica Rus Esperanca,
S. Miguel, Acores

I also have severl tin types, which appear to be Portugues, but with no
identifying information on them.

Does anyone make any connections with any of these people??? I'll try to
find time to get them put on a disc and enter them on the site. Thanks.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Soares

2011-07-03 Thread Diane Lavely
I'm going to try to give as much info as I have, and hope someone
makes a connection.

My grandmother was Maria Lorencia Soares - - aka Mary L. Sears (1883
-1970). She was born in Cambridge, MA. Her parents were: Jose
Machado Soares - - Born in The Azores 24 July 1833 - Died 12 May
1905. My grandmother had at least two siblings - - an older brother.
Eugene Soares, and a sister, ?? and my Great grandmother, Joaquina
M. ??? (1842 - 1922). Joaquina had a sister, Filomena, who married
Joseph Machado Evangello. They all lived near each other in
Somerville, MA. Eugene lived as a boarder with his aunt Filomena and
uncle Joseph Evangello. My grandmother, Maria/Mary took care of her
mother until her mother died in abt 1922. She then married James
Ethelbert Hiltz (1877 - 1938) at the age of 39 yrs. In old family
pics, I find other names Costa, Machado, Mitchell, Evangello. I
understand that Machado was often changed to Mitchell. Anyone make
any connections??? Thanks for any help or suggestions. My family
tree on Ancestry, com is "Lavely/Hillman/Hiltzs/Soares Family Tree."
My email is" allevacon...@gmail.com. Thanks! Diane Lavely

Laurencia Soares (aka Mary L. Sears) was my grandmother. She was born
in Cambridge, Mass., USA 10/23/1883. Her parents were both born in
the Azores, That is all that I know about them. Does anyone have any
info, or can you point me in a reasonable direction?? Thanks.
