There is only a preview of the book. Meaning it is showing you sections of the book. I used the link you posted Sam and once you get to page 20 it shows you that 21 through 76 are not shown in the preview. It let's you look at some pages but not all of them. This book is still under copyright restrictions. You may find a copy in a library or I believe there is an ebook version for $8.99 to download. The Portuguese migration to Hawaii was fueled by poor economic conditions in the mother country, and particularly in Madeira. The production and export of fine wines had been for many years the mainstay of the Madeiran economy. During the 1850’s, however, the vineyards were laid waste by a blight that crippled the wine industry for decades. Unemployment and hunger followed the destruction of the vineyards. As conditions worsened, Madeirans looked for a better way of life in Brazil, the United States and Hawaii. During this same period, the Kingdom of Hawaii was in need of laborers for her sugar plantations. The large scale cultivation of sugar depended upon a continuous supply of inexpensive labor. The demand for plantation workers increased after Hawaii concluded a Reciprocity Treaty with the United States in 1876, which facilitated the exportation of Hawaiian sugar. The dramatic decline of the Hawaiian population had caused planters and government officials to look abroad for suitable immigrants to work the land and increase the population of the Kingdom. Several thousand Chinese emigrated to Hawaii during the 1860’s and 1870’s. Yet the Chinese seldom brought their families, and distinct cultural differences between the Chinese and other residents of Hawaii caused many of the latter to demand an end to the large scale importation of workers from China. In 1876, *Mr. Jacintho Pereira,* a Portuguese citizen and proprietor of a successful dry goods store in Honolulu, came forward with an interesting idea. Pereira suggested that the Hawaiian government investigate the possibility of solving Hawaii’s labor and population problems by encouraging the immigration of Portuguese from Madeira. Hillbrand acted as Hawaii’s agent, and carried out all of the details required to place the first contingent of Portuguese immigrants aboard the Priscilla. *1853* Census shows 87 Portuguese in Hawaii. *1876* Jacinto Perreira, a Portuguese merchant residing in Hawaii recommends to the Kingdom the immigration of Portuguese to Hawaii to help solve the labor problems. *1877* The St. Antonio Society, a Portuguese benevolent association, is established in Honolulu. *1878* Census shows more than 400 Portuguese in Hawaii. *1878* The ship Priscilla arrives in Honolulu harbor on September 30. 1878 with the first major contingent of Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii (about 120 men, women and children). *1879* The ship Ravenscrag arrives in Honolulu harbor on August 23, 1879 with the second large group of Portuguese settlers in Hawaii (419 men, women and children). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] How accurate is death record information
Since this thread is about death record information, I would like to ask a question. Could someone tell me about Obitos? I see there are some on CCA, but where most deaths recorded or was it hit and miss? I have always looked for the baptismos and marriages. Death recs in the 1600's and 1700's sometimes contain less info. Generally i have seen that children and young unmarried people have relatively accurate info with age, names of parents etc., and where they were from. For middle age or older individuals age accuracy seems to vary from what I have have seen, from accurate within the correct year , or up to 4 or 5 years off. Sometimes spouses of the deceased are not listed for some reason, as well as ages. Other times the records may not list the original place the individual was from if they did not know. In any case, the Obitos can be very useful in filling in info and calculating their approximate birth. I use the other baptismal and marriage records to get more precise info. -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores. The bride in mille sette centos secenta e seis = 1766. Portuguese numbers kind of trip me up so I checked my translations and confirmed them. This would mean the groom was 13 and the bride 11? I have never seen such a young couple in the Azores! Here is the marriage record for reference: http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1758-1787/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1758-1787_item1/P94.html I began to think that maybe the Priest made a mistake. He was tired. He really meant 1754 and 1756 (or something else), not 1764 and 1766. I decided to find the baptismal records to see if they were in those years. I found the groom, Joze, in 1764 (bottom of left hand page, son of Matheus Correa): http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-B-1751-1770/SMG-ND-ACHADA-B-1751-1770_item1/P97.html And, I found the bride, Roza, in 1766 (left hand side bottom, dau of Domingas Pimentel): http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-B-1751-1770/SMG-ND-ACHADA-B-1751-1770_item1/P109.html I have not translated out the marriage record in it's entirety yet as I haven't had a chance to really work through it. I wonder what other researchers think. Did these two really marry so young? Would they have set up house at such a young age--would their have been a delay until they were older? Does anyone know if the images on the CCA site are from the microfilmed copies that the LDS Church made? Or have they (CCA) digitized their own copy from the original records. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Copyright and the Copy Machine
I do not chime in too often, but this article from Legal Genealogists is not fully correct. The large library does have scanners, with copyright notices posted next to them. As a genealogist by degree (BA), there is a % of a copyrighted book that can be copied. I am away from my information right now, but if memory serves me right it is about 20% of a book may be copied. It is not a problem to copy a few pages of a book, so do not panic if you have made copies. However, he is genetically related to me, and we share a biologically confirmed ancestor who lived in that same region in the 15th century. Is the kit number of your James A. Miller 228805? I am one of the volunteer co-administrators of the P312 Subclades project at FTDNA, and in this project we have quite a few Miller samples that have tested positive for the DF19 and DF88 mutations. Is yours one of these? My own Verelst family is also DF19+ DF88+, but unlike the Miller / Müller family it has an additional mutation, L644. Any historic connection between the Miller and Verelst lineages thus necessarily pre-dates the origin of the L644 mutation, and because we estimate that L644 originated roughly between the 5th and 8th century AD, we need to go back at least 1300 years to find a common ancestor. I expect that this MRCA lived in northern Germany or Denmark. Best regards, Wim Verelst. Didn't we have something about this dual citizenship sometime back? I was thinking someone said there were some other requirements. I will try to find what it takes. I'm pretty sure my grandchildren couldn't apply directly based solely on their great grandfather's birth in the Azores. Sorry about any confusion. David Perry On Thursday, December 5, 2013 11:38:03 AM UTC-8, David Perry wrote: FYI - Portugal considers all descendants of folks born in Portugal to be citizens of Portugal. All one needs is an unbroken paper trail back to your ancestor who was born there and you can become a dual citizen of Portugal and the US. My father was born in Sao Miguel and after gathering the proper forms and paying a few hundred dollars to my local Portuguese Consulate, just today after about 9 months, I was notified I'm officially a Portuguese citizen even though I was born in Massachusetts. The only wrinkle in my paper trail was my father changed his name from Pereira to Perry and that would have broken the trail except back in 1938 he officially changed his name in this country. Without that document, it wouldn't have happened. It's easiest to do if a parent was born there, more difficult if it's a grandparent - the trail gets longer and fuzzier - though it's still possible. I did this, not for me - I'm too old to care one way or another but for one son who has expressed a desire to open a BB in semi-retirement in the Azores. He too is eligible since his grandfather was born there and now his father is a citizen as well. Not only does it pave the way for him to work, live and run a business in Portugal but as a citizen of a European Union country, he can essentially do that anywhere in Europe. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco da Silveira Villalobos descendant of King William I of England ?
Doug Is you article Gateways to Royalty written in English or Portuguese? You already got some help with the Minho website. Just verify each record as you go, because it's full of bad assumptions as to parentage, especially in some of the oldest generations on Faial in Cedros and places where they have only baptisms, but no marriages to support them. Some lines are just wishful thinking. John Raposo quoted some of your ancestry from the book by Forjaz and Mendes about the four islands in the Horta district. I don't know whether that has some additional links I haven't found myself. But much of that is also mentioned in an older nobility book about Faial families, called Familias Faialenses. That is available online these days - all in Portuguese, of course, but I believe you are fluent in that. For the oldest generations beyond the Azores, turn to Felgueiras Gayo, a genealogist from the 1700s, if I recall. He wrote many volumes on the noble families of Portugal and you can get back to all the European royalty there. It might also be online. But to answer your exact question, yes you have documented ancestral lines that go back to Guilherme da Silveira of Flanders (Willem van der Hagen). It comes from your Vilalobos line, that branches off to Marramaque and then to Willem vdH. If you follow your Peixoto lines, you will find they get back to some Kings of Aragon. On your Carvalho line, it goes back to more kings of Navarre, Leon and elsewhere. I once wrote an article called Gateways to Royalty and I think I have some additional specifics: www.dholmes.com/articles.html That will occupy at least the next 6 months of your free time. :-) Boa sorte. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] GeneWeb to Gedcom
I agree with Cheri, try out the sample programs. I however am an Ancestral Quest user. There is a free version of AQ available online to download. It is usable, but does not include all of the goodies that come with the full version. I am biased because AQ is written by a friend of mine. He is the one that originally wrote the PAF program. On the AQ website, I believe there is a place to email questions or a phone number to call with questions. Marilyn On Mon, Nov 4, 2013 at 2:54 PM, Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com wrote: Freddy G, I'm not sure what you mean by GeneWeb. Is your genealogy in the cloud? There should be a command of File Export and you can create a Gedcom that way. Ancestral Quest was supposed to be the next program after PAF. Everyone will tell you that their program is the best, of course! The 4 most popular genealogy software programs on the market (for a PC) are Family Tree Maker (FTM) by Ancestry.com (no free trial), Legacy Family Tree (their standard edition is free), RootsMagic (their Essentials is free), and The Master Genealogist (TMG) which is free for a 30 day trial period. Download Legacy, RM, and TMG and play with them all. Make up some people (George Washington, Bugs Bunny), have Daisy Duck married to Donald and a child by Bugs Bunny and see how the software handles it. Have people with the same name (3 or 4 George Washingtons - one born 1722, another born 1799, another born 1850, and the last one born 1900 and see how to distinguish between them all). Legacy has a fairly intuitive interface and is pretty powerful. RM has the smallest learning curve and has a portability option (RootsMagic to Go) with their paid version. TMG has the largest learning curve, is the most powerful, is completely customizable and has really good filters for handing people of the same name. When I give my Genealogy Software Review speech, I tell those who are nervous computer users to try RM first (Essentials) and see how they like it. I tell people who don't want to spend too much time learning a program but want it to do more to try Legacy. I tell people who are annoyed that their program won't do this or that and who are comfortable with the computer to try out TMG. Because FTM doesn't have a free trial it's hard to say what to do with that program. If you go to your local genealogy society, someone probably has it and can show you what it looks like and what is does. I belong to a Users Group for my genealogy software program. People come to our meetings who are checking out the other programs because they don't like the one that they are currently using. See if there are any User Groups in your area. RM, Legacy, and TMG has a User Groups tab on their respective web sites. They don't have to accept the relationship in order for me to run the filter. FTDNA is supposed to change this where we won't have to assign a relationship in order to run the filter. We will just be able to to it. Don't know when this is coming though. They told us last November at the conference and it hasn't happened yet (they keep IT pretty busy). For people who tested themselves and one parent (because the other is deceased) can run the filter for Not In Common With to get the other side of their tree. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] switching names - research tip
Great post, it also helps me to understand that in one record an ancestor was listed as Rita Josefa and in another as Josefa Rita. thanks Marilyn On Wed, Mar 6, 2013 at 11:33 PM, p...@dholmes.com wrote: For all new Portuguese genealogists: I have run across something just tonight during my research that I think will help out researchers who haven't had enough experience to decide on their own whether a particular record is for their sought ancestor, or not. I met online a man from Terceira who now lives in CA and so has 100% of his ancestors from Terceira. He is from the village of São Mateus da Calheta, which is a little west of the city of Angra. A beautiful church is right on the main road that encircles the island. Since I happen to have many ancestors from São Mateus - it's where my surname combination was created (Rocha Homem/Holmes), I knew there is practically a guarantee that we would be related many times over. Having an interest in his own ancestry, he immediately sent me a list of many ancestors going back to the 1600s in many cases. While looking over his data and comparing it to mine, I was reminded of the topic of this message. Amongst his ancestors are a series of ancestors who used the name FERREIRA da SOUSA as well as FERREIRA BRIOSO. It happened with several generations of this line. One might find them one time listed as Francisco Ferreira de Sousa and at another time as Francisco Ferreira Brioso. Knowing it is the same person comes from the constant name of the wife and all happening in one village and time period. On another of his lines he has ancestors named GOMES RIBEIRO. This ancestor was also called RIBEIRO GOMES. Each time, it is known to be the same person because it was the same name for his wife. But topping it off, when he married, he used yet a third name of MARTINS RIBEIRO. I don't believe I have ever run across this before. And one must use extreme caution when making such a conclusion, or you could end up tracing all the wrong ancestors. To be certain, one must carefully study all the names for all children in the family. Some will be exactly the same as others. Some will be different than the others, but match those of other siblings. But when it came to this marriage, I was at a loss, because it should have happened in one of the villages such as São Mateus, São Bartolomeu, Santa Bárbara or maybe in Sé, Angra. But I have completed all the marriages for these places in this time frame and still came up empty. Just for the heck of it, I decided to search my entire database contained in my genealogy program. There are over 225,000 people so far entered. I figured I must have found this marriage already. So I searched for the name of the wife and then just RIBEIRO for the husband. I don't know if all genealogy programs can do this. I only use BROTHER'S KEEPER and have done so for about 25 years. Others will surely tell me if they can search for people in this way. If they can't then I would never want such a genealogy program, because I would be lost and have many duplicate couples under different names which I try extremely hard to avoid. Well, I did find a second match and it was in one of those villages, as I expected. And it was in a time frame I expected. What I never expected was this third name variation - MARTINS RIBEIRO. But I even went back and looked at this marriage yet again. Clear as day it's Martins Ribeiro. And he even has a father and brother using Martins Ribeiro. So this is no mistake. I had no children attached to that couple whose marriage I had found. I only had children attached to the them when they used the first two name variations. Just so you know, these are not my ancestors. They are simply part of my massive project to trace the genealogies of everyone who ever was born or lived in Terceira (and also Pico island). So until today, I never searched for baptisms for this couple and when I found the first child with the reversal of RIBEIRO GOMES to GOMES RIBEIRO, it all started to fall into place what was going on here - the common name variation that one always will find in any Portuguese tree. I don't expect anyone will ever find such an example as above. But one will ALWAYS find that one person in their family tree (in Portugal) has a name variation that will throw a curve ball your way and make you think something is wrong. If you have ancestors from Pico or Terceira and are stuck, let me know. Boa sorte! Background: After the Azores were discovered, Prince Henry found it difficult to get the pampered Portuguese nobility to leave their comfortable surroundings on the continent, and venture off into the vast unknown ocean to live in isolation, on a few islands bereft of all of those aforementioned comforts. A timely intervention by Henry's cousin, the Duchess of Lancaster, who appealed to Henry on behalf of the Flemish people, after they had been left destitute in the aftermath of a war for the Netherlands. So, Henry agreed to invite the Flemish people to migrate to, and populate the islands of the Azores (two problems solved). They settled mostly in the central group of islands (Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, and Graciosa). The result of the Flemish colonization brought with it new customs and new names, which the Portuguese islanders accepted, and so, the Flemish were quickly assimilated into the Azorian society. I did a paper in college about the Portuguese in Hawaii. They were not treated will. They were treated like the slaves in the Southern United States. Manoel's sister, Francisca, married on of my gr gr grandfather's cousin's, Diniz de Braga. They also went to Kauai. I couldn't find Manoel's family in Hawaii, but in 1900 two of his children are living with Diniz and Francisca. A couple of years ago, another researcher contacted me about a Manuel Carreiro of Fall River, MA. It turns out this Manuel Carreiro was the son of Manoel Carreiro and Maria Claudina. Manuel Jr. left Kauai and married Annine Cecila Silva in Fall River, MA in 1901. I have been trying to learn more about this family because it fascinates me. I wonder what drew Manuel Jr away from Hawaii. Almost everyone else in the family who left Hawaii ended up in Monterey Co. or Oakland, CA. This is my first known instance of a Hawaii cousin going to Massachusetts. Recenlty, I've learned that their may have been more Muniz Serpa's who came to Fall River, MA. I'm following the trail of Ignes M. Serpa, dau of Francisco M. Serpa Ermelinda da Camara, who married my distant cousins Jacintho Pacheco Remigio in Fall River, 25 Jan 1905. I'm not certain yet but I believe the Ignes is related to Maria Claudina (Muniz Serpa) Carreiro. I'm still trying to piece it altogether, but it appears that their were Carriero's and Muniz Serpa's of the same family in Fall River as early as 1900 on Columbia St. They had my de Mello Castanho's living with them which would make a whole circle of connections to Maia, Ribeira Grande. Is anyone connected to the Carreiro/Muniz Serpa/de Braga/Pacheco Remigio/de Mello Castanho's of Fall River, MA and Maia, Ribeira Grande? In general, the US airlines list their cheapest fares about *5-6 WEEKS BEFORE* departure date. However, I like to start stalking airfares about 10 weeks before departure date so I have some notion of the market, although I know that usually the price I'm willing to pay isn't available for about another month. (I check Expedia, but there are other similar aggregator sites, as well as a few airlines that aren't listed on any of them, e.g., Southwest). In off-season (ca. October-April), SATA typically flies only between Boston and Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, and only on Tuesdays and Fridays (except for a smattering of extra flights around various major holidays), with Tuesday fares generally a bit lower. However, domestic US fares to/from Boston tend to be significantly lower on Tuesdays than Fridays, so substantial savings on those might help you decide, if your schedule permits. One smart move SATA has made lately is to schedule their return flight from PDL to BOS for a few hours earlier than it used to, so that it's due to arrive in late afternoon, allowing sufficient time for connecting passengers to clear Customs, then make the next flight (previously, their flights arrived so late that a continuing passenger had to spend the night in Boston, and hotels there are pricey). Don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions. Katharine. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
