[AZORES-Genealogy] Help on starting our Azorean family history

2011-02-20 Thread Emily Martin
I am excited to find this google group and am enjoying all the posts.
I have felt inspired to research my husband's Azorean history for the
last 10 years and haven't done much. I am amazed how little his
father and aunt know (who are now in their late 80's). They don't
even know what their grandparents first names were! We do know that
Theodore (Theotonio) Martins (my father in laws father) was born in
San Bartolomeu, Terceira around 1886 and died 1935 in Patterson, CA
and his wife Madeline Rocha was born in 1896 in Porto Judeo, Terceira
and died in 1957 in Santa Clara, CA. I have gone to Family History
Centers and ordered microfilm that my friend who is Portuguese could
not even begin to make out (the scribble)
Anyone have advice on where to start? Is there a good way to search
passengers on ships that came over?...I can guess they came in the
1920's but no idea how they traveled to California.

Have you gotten copies of their death certificates?
It might list who their parents were.

2011-02-20 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Emily,

Since you are dealing with records from the 1880s and 1890s from Sao
Bartolomeu and Porto Judeo, you will have to either write there to get them,
hire a researcher to get them for you, or go there yourself.

To write there (form letter where you fill in the blanks at the end of the
document):
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/genresources.html

Find a researcher:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/azoresindex.html#researchers

For Porto Judeo and Sao Bartolomeu, once you get back to 1873, you can
research via the film.

How to read the handwriting: Either use a researcher or learn yourself. It
takes perseverance and a lot of patience, but it can be done:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo_Part_3a.html#reading
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/Paleography/paleography_01.html
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Portuguese_Genealogical_Word_List
(Scroll down to where it says Additional Resources in purple. Under that,
look for the blue words Basic Portuguese Paleography. It is in 4 parts.

Hope some of this helps.

2011-02-20 Thread bellemarco

Emily,

Do you know if Aguiar is part of their name? I found a ship's record for a
Teotonio Martins Aguiar, 27, born Lages, Terceira, sailing from Angra,
Terceira, November 14, 1920, on the ship Roma, arriving Providence, RI,
November 22, 1920, leaving his father Manuel Martins Aguiar, Lages,
Terceira, Azores going to friend Manuel G. Godinho, 92 Mulberry Street,
Fall River, MA.

Will keep searching but let me know if this might be him as then I can
check the CCA site.

Here is ship's list for other Theotonio. Which one is yours?

Theotonio Ignacio Martins 23, b. Bartolomeu, Terceira, on ship Roma,
leaving Horta Oct. 23/1919 arriving Providence (Ancestry has mistakenly
listed this under NY Passenger List), leaving his mother Maria Jose Vieira,
Santa Luzia, Angra, Terceira, going to his brother Jose Ignacio Martins,
Tepton, Tulare, CA.

Will wait till you let us know which one is yours before I do anymore
research, ie finding him on CCA list.
