Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for documentation of g.grandfather Antonio Goncalves Born 1877

2018-03-20 Thread linda
So, on the record for the twins, Antonio and Jose:

Using my tablet, I can read the birthdate as January 21. The father’s last name
is given as “Jorge”, the grandfathers’ are Jorge Furtado and Avelar, and The
Godfather’s is Alvarez.

Sarah, I’m afraid it seems unlikely that this is your great grandfather’s
record.

We all want to help, so if you can gather as much of the information that Cheri
suggested to start with, it will give you the best possible leads to go in the
right direction.

Hope this helps,

Linda

It's not Jan. 8th. I need to know how that date is being obtained. Flores
has about 10 churches to search. No guarantee that the dad is a Gonçalves
either. Who are Antonio's parents and how do you know?

Without supporting information, as Cheri says, it's not really possible to know
if it's the right Antonio. If you can get as much data from US sources as you
can, it will save you much time and effort in the long run.

Best wishes,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for documentation of g.grandfather Antonio Goncalves Born 1877

2018-03-19 Thread Cheri Mello
Sarah,

The record you are sending is for a Constantino and a Joao.

Your original email said, "born on Flores but are not 100% sure." You
didn't say family lore. It sounded like a guess.

You need more documentation in America to be more certain of Flores. What
census work have you done on your ancestor? Was he in America during WWI
and did you pull his draft registration card? Did he naturalize and if so,
did you order his naturalization packet from the USCIS? Do you have his
death certificates and his obituaries from the newspapers?

It's rare for our illiterate ancestors to give the correct birth date. It's
off sometimes. Where are you getting that birth date from? Cheri

Family lore says Flores island. I indicated that in my original message. I
don't know the parish, that's true. Please look at the attachment when you
have computer access.
Thanks again,

You still haven't said why you are picking Flores island and that parish. I
believe in your original message you said you only knew that your ancestor
was born in the Azores. I don't understand what has led you to N.S. da
Conceição on Flores. Cheri

2018-03-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Sarah S,

The Azores Gen Web is a great place to start:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/
The "how to" is here: https://goo.gl/dGG4Ar

I don't know why you picked Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in Santa Cruz when
you only know the Azores. That's like someone saying they know their
ancestor is from the United States, so they just pick Waypoint Church in
Omaha, Nebraska because it happens to be in the middle of the country. I
checked Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in Santa Cruz and there is no Antonio on
the date you provided. Make more of a paper trail in the U.S. using the
suggestions in the "how to" on the Azores GenWeb. You need to figure out if
it is indeed Flores and then you need to figure out the village
(freguesia).

[AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for documentation of g.grandfather Antonio Goncalves Born 1877

2018-03-18 Thread Sarah Stinson
Hello Azores group,

I'm helping my Mom to locate information on her grandfather, Antonio
Goncalves, who was born Jan 8th, 1877 in the Azores (we believe he was born
on Ilha Flores but are not 100% sure). I've requested the baptism records
for the Igreja Católica. Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Santa Cruz das Flores,
Horta ) parish, but I
know these documents can be difficult to read (especially since I don't
speak Portuguese...yet). Is there anywhere else I should be looking? Can
anyone prove help with this?

Thank you,
Sarah S
