[AZORES-Genealogy] looking for information on my g ggrandfather

2010-02-20 Thread FRANK BARTLETT
Looking for information on my g ggrandfather and his brother. He and his
brother immigrated to the US in the 1870's-1880's as a pre teen and his
brother
a teen as the story has been told. They came through Portsmouth, NH. My g
grandfather was then adopted by a Bartlett family in NH and later moved on
to the Boston area. Much is known about him from there on. But little
mention of his past. We know his brother moved on very soon after arrival to
Merced
CA. They used an anglicized name something like Gerrivas, Gerevas. or
possibly Gervasio. We know a sister joined the Uncle later on in the 1880's,
but
she went directly to Merced. I am trying to find the family name and the
Azorean island of they're origin. Some had mentioned in the ancestry notes
that
it most likely was a western island of Sao Jorge, Pico, Faial, or Flores,
since they supposedly arrived on a whaling vessel. Anyway a trip to the
Azores is on my
"bucket list" but I would like to have a little more info before I go.

Thanks,

Frank Bartlett

Hello Frank,

I can not help you much but the term Western Island refers to all the
islands in the Acores.

I grew up in Portsmouth NH and the Bartlett name is well known and goes
back to pre revolutionary days. There is a house on display in
Portsmouth known as the Bartlett house. There is also a street named
Bartlett Street.

A suggestion I would have is to try and find birth records of Frank
Bartlett's children or Frank Bartlett's marriage record. It is
possible he may list where he was born. Also, if he were listed on
WWI draft registration form. When was he born and when did they move
to Boston area and what is name of his wife/children? We might be
able to help you more with this information.

Yes they are the western islands to Portugal, but I have read that the islands
are clumped in three groups, western group (Flores, Corvo) the central group
PICO, Fial, Sao Jorge, and eastern group Sao Miguel, Santa Maria.

Hi Debbie,

My grandmother Deolinda (Duilinda,Dalinda take your pick) was born in Flores .
That's all I know.  On her marriage license her name is listed as Dalinda
Goncalves Pedro.  Father Antone Goncalves and Mother Isabel Pedro .  So I am
totally confused as to her last name.  I have searched both Pedros and
Goncalves with no luck so far.  She had at least 7 sisters and 1 brother.
Brother died at sea and 1 sister settled in Brazil.  All the other sisters came
here to California.

My grandmother married Frank B. Avila and they moved here to Buhach Atwater,
Merced County about 1901.  Frank and his brothers John, Jose and Antone all
farmed in the Buhach,Atwater area.  One sister Rose (married Frank Dutra) lived
across the street from Frank & Deolinda.

My other problem is I do not speak Portuguese, let alone read it.  She is my
last grandparent to find and  I cannot give up till I do find her

Do you know if anyone has indexed Flores in English?

Hi Debbie,

My grandmother, Deolinda Pedro Goncalves was from Flores.  She married my
grandfather, Frank B. Avila, (1901)in Oakland CA.  They moved to Buhach
Atwater, CA. Merced County had a small farm and raised their family there.  My
grandfather was from Norte Grande,Sao Joege.

I recently found him but I am at a loss with my grandmother.  Her father was
Antone Goncalves and mother Isabel Pedro .  I have been searching the Flores
website but cannot find either one of them.  No surprise there as I do not
speak or read Portuguese..

I am wondering if maybe they might show up in some other list members
genealogy.

My main problem is that no one knows where in Flores she came from.  One her
death certificate  they listed her born 08 Nov 1873 Azores Island.

If you know of, or happen to ever run across these people would you please
contact me?  I would really appreciatwe it...

Thank you

Beverley,

Here is the shiplist with your grandmother arriving.

It's the Penninsular arriving 4 Sep 1900 in New York. It sailed from Flores.
She is on line 17 as Diolinda Pedro Goncalves, on her way to Oakland to meet
sister Catherine Goncalves

Also attached is an obit from 1946 for Katherine Yore. I beleive this is the
sister. She can be found in Oakland on the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

Thank you

I've discovered from connections on this list, that many of the Azoreans who
came to Merced were from Flores, as were my great grandparents.

But little mention
of his past. We know his brother moved on very soon after arrival to Merced
CA. They used an anglicized name something like Gerrivas, Gerevas. or possibly
Gervasio. We know a sister joined the Uncle later on in the 1880's, but
she went directly to Merced. I am trying to find the family name and the
Azorean island of they're origin. Some had mentioned in the ancestry notes that
it most likely was a western island of Sao Jorge, Pico, Faial, or Flores, since
they supposedly arrived on a whaling vessel. Anyway a trip to the Azores is on
my
"bucket list" but I would like to have a little more info before I go.

Thanks,

Frank Bartlett

Beverly,

I've been looking around for information on the sisters you mentioned in
earlier posts. You said all six came to California.

Do you have any more information on them that could place them in
Califronia. If we could get a death certificate, it might name a town.

Beverly,

I have some more for you. First is 20 Feb 1890 birth record from Alameda county
for the daughter of Catherine Gonsorves( their spelling)  and Sylvester Serpa.

Next is the obit for Silvester Serpa from the 8 Nov 1910 Oakland Tribune.

Then the 1920 census for now widowed Kathryn Serpa. Her daughter May has
married John Percy Everingham. They have two sons.

Here is the death record for Catherine

Catherine Serpa

14 Nov 1941

Alameda

1 Jan 1860

Other Country

Maybe her death certificate has a town named.
