Rosemarie, My grandmother did not say anything about going to New York. I have the List or Manifest of Alien passenger etc. There are 13 people listed on the page. 10 came from Terceira and 3 came Sao Jorge. 6 people had their immigration verified, normally they applied for citzenship. The list states S.S. Madonna left Angra on July 25, 1911. Jack On 3/20/2011 6:46 PM, rcap...@redshift.com wrote: Jack They must have been on the same ship! RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] The Trip they took
During WW 1 most countries did not let men leave because they needed them for the war. After the war US limited immigration. There were three major acts passed 1917, 1921 & 1924 Most noted the Barred Zone act of 1917 limited the immigration form Asia (Chinese Exclusion). The Emergency Quota Act of 1921 limited immigration to the US at the current ethnic distribution in the US. For example if 3% of the ethnic population was from Portugal then 3% of the immigrants permitted into the US were Portuguese. The act of 1924 limited immigration from southern and eastern European countries and Asia. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] The Trip they took
My grandmother arrived in Providence on Nov. 1, 1922, from Pico. She said she then took a train from there to Chicago to Sacramento to Hanford. The trip from Chicago to Sacramento took 2 days. My grandfather came in 1920 and I am assuming that he came the same way. He came right after a child of theirs died from an accident. I've always wondered if he already had plans to come or if he came because of the accident. Does anyone know if there was something else going on in 1920 since it looks like a few others were coming at the same time?
