[Bacula-users] Doesn't want to recycle tape in the drive

2007-11-06 Thread Adam Cécile
Hi,

Here is my problem:
I have five tapes (Dailly-00[1-5]).
Let's assume Daily-005 is purged and Daily-001 is used (but data expired).
If Daily-001 is in the drive, Bacula won't recycle it, instead it will
keep asking for Daily-005.
If I set Daily-005 as disabled, bacula automatically purge Daily-001 and
recycle it.

Any tips ?

Best regards, Adam.

(tested with bacula 2.2.0 and 2.2.5 on a Debian Etch system, with only
one external LTO2 Dell tape drive).

For the single-spindle tapes, like DLT and LTO, retensioning should
never be needed. Thus it's only reasonable for the drive firmware to
not accept this command.

[Bacula-users] What is the strategy for MaximumPartSize?

2007-11-06 Thread Hydro Meteor
Hello all,

This question probably has an obvious answer that I'm missing, but with
regard to DVD backups, the Device Resource in the Storage Daemon
Configuration has an optional Directive named "MaximumPartSize". From the
Bacula Usesr's Guide, I think I understand that setting a value for this
Directive (e.g., 800 MB) is a way of controlling how many bytes (from the
Client backup target) ends up in the Bacula spool directory at one time
(before the bytes get copied to the DVD optical disc). Is this a correct
assessment that MaximumPartSize in essence acts as a sort of flow control
from backup target on the client to the spool to the DVD disc that requires
mounting?

Thanks,

-H

Thank your for your feedback, there is really nothing to apologize for. We
need to keep all our discussions open to all points of view. The only request
that I make is to keep the conversation civil, which certainly was the
case -- if you want to count mistakes (I'm not counting), just look at

Thanks to David and you for the link, I have now added it to the web site on

It appeared that instead of a simple flag, the director uses an MD5 hash of
the fileset definitions which it stores in the FileSet database, which it
creates only if 'ignore fileset changes' is set to no (and upon the first
full backup of a fileset, obviously). That hash is compared to the state of
the fileset before every non-full backup job.

Deleting the last entry there caused Bacula to consider my FileSet as the
newest version again, and thus to continue doing incremental updates.

[Bacula-users] ClientRunAfterJob Problems

Hey all,

I've my jobs setup with the line ClientRunAfterJob = "rm -rf

Well, your request is a bit general, so I am not sure what you want us to do
as you did not suggest any specific solution. I did take a look at the bugs
list, and in the beginning very few people filled in the Bacula version or
other information that we request. However, recently, nearly everyone fills
it in.

It is unpleasant and not very practical for us to constantly request users to
put in information if it is not really critical, because it just delays the
response and makes more work for us. I think our Bugs web page is pretty
clear on what we need, and if we don't find the information we need, we
sometimes either request it or close the bug and send the reporter back to
the web page documentation. The ideal situation would be that everyone fills
in everything and provides *all* the info we need, but this is not the case,
and the problem is rather universal.

When we supply a patch, the patch is very clearly labeled as to what version
it applies, and if we fix a bug generally specify in which version it is
fixed when we close the bug -- sometimes in the specific field provided, and
sometimes as a bugnote, and sometimes both.

A good resource for finding problems and fixes is the technotes or ChangeLog
that are released with every version and kept current in the SVN. The SVN
technotes are typically up to date, and it is really rare that we fail to
mention a problem or a bug fix.

As part of our effort to develop extensive professional support, at some time
in the future we will have a more complete knowledge base, and I expect that
to be much more easily searched. However, a knowledge base is very expensive
to create and maintain (you have to pay people to do it), so I am not sure
whether it will be available only to customers who pay for its creation and
maintenance or to the general public.

I'm not sure what more we can do.

Kern

I can think of a number of instances when retensioning is needed -
particularly if the cartridge has been dropped and the tape pancake has
likely slipped slightly.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula doesn't see tape in drive after label barcodes

2007-11-06 Thread Arno Lehmann
Hi,

ok, I captured some debug output regarding the issue when the SD can't
detect a usable volume in the tape drive.

This only happens (in my installations) when the pool requested is
changed. In this case, the full backups from one pool ran fine, and
the incremental backups for the week started. The former use the pool
"Archive", the latter the "Daily" one.

The state in which I found the system was as follows:
- A usable tape from pool "Daily" had been loaded into the libraries
tape drive (coming from slot 8, having the name 000974L2). This volume
was selected according to the retention periods, and loading obviously
worked.

The debug trace output (this one at level 1000, I believe) shows the
following when I usse a mount command:

This is one of the reasons callbacks are evil (apart from the extra
network loading). They just don't scale.

There are a bunch of supposed "antispam" measures which are bigger
problems than that which they purport to solve. C/R and callbacks fall
into this camp - especially if someone really is the victim of envelope
forgery attacks (Callbacks and C/R have been known to effectively cause
DDoS on smaller mailservers)

Probably there is no file or directory named '*' .
I think you dont have wildcard expansion here.

...snippel
In addition, the command string is parsed then fed to the OS, which means that
the path will be searched to execute your specified command, but there is no
shell interpretation, as a consequence, if you invoke complicated commands or
want any shell features such as redirection or piping, you must call a shell
script and do it inside that script.

So far so good. I can just post this as a workaround. For me, its only
happened when labeling from
barcodes.

[Bacula-users] bat: client list jobtotals

2007-11-06 Thread João Henrique Freitas
Hello,

Anybody has the same issue in bat when:

1- Client -> Rigth click on any client
2- Select "List Jobs of Client"
3- Select (on left panel) "JobList of Client xxx" and right clik on it
4- Select "List Jobs Totals in Console"

On this time the bat show a error about list jobtotals4 command.

In bacula documentation, the command in question (list jobtotals) has no
argument.

On the file src/qt-console/joblist.cpp, in function:

void JobList::consoleListJobTotals()
{
   QString cmd("list jobtotals");
   cmd += m_currentJob;
   if (mainWin->m_longList) { cmd.prepend("l"); }
   consoleCommand(cmd);
}

If I comment out the line cmd += m_currentJob; bat works.

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Bacula speed limitations?

2007-11-06 Thread Shon Stephens
I was just wondering what the factors limiting the speed with which
Bacula writes to tape are? I performed some testing on my LTO-3 drive
and found that the theoretical limit is 276G/hr, while my backups are
writing at around 174G/hr. The client is the Bacula system itself. The
FD is reading files from a filesystem that resides on a SATAbeast FCA
attached storage array. The files are Oracle dumps, and the options I
have specified are:

signature = MD5
verify = pins5
sparse = yes
noatime = yes

The only compression I am using is the tape devices compression, which
at 2:1 compression should be over 500G/hr. I wrote a 3.4T job in
19h30m. At what seems to be a compression of 1.5:1. This should still
be faster than the 174G/hr its acheiving.

Would using MD5 signatures slow this up?
Are any of these settings tunable and do they affect Bacula performance?

mt-back4.director Version: 2.0.3 (06 March 2007) i386-pc-solaris2.8 solaris 5.8

[Bacula-users] Bacula backup running amok with "not configured to autolabel Volumes" messages

2007-11-06 Thread Win Htin
Hi folks,

I have a RedHat EL4 server connected through FC to an IBM TS3200 tape
changer with single LTO4 drive with 44 slots. The bacula version is 2.2.5. I
have set the label to use the barcode labels and wiped all 25 tapes in the
changer clean with the command "mt rewind && mt weof && mt rewind" to make
sure all previous label and data entries from earlier tests are completely
gone.

Entry from bacula-sd.conf:

Label Type = IBM
Check Labels = yes
LabelMedia = no;

Following is the sequence of my test run:

1. Checked status of the autochanger just before the job was started.
Confirmed NO tapes loaded in the tape drive.

message spitted out incessantly.
06-Nov 14:10 nfsserver-sd JobId 1: Warning: Device "LTO4_1" (/dev/IBMtape0)

Any ideas why Bacula is unhappy with the tape(s)? Am I doing something wrong
with the labels? I've been testing Bacula for the plus 1+ month and it
consistently gets messed up with the tapes. Help is much appreciated.

Re: [Bacula-users] Autochangers over Fiber Channel

2007-11-06 Thread Mike Seda
Hi Flak,
I use mtx all the time with my Quantum PX502 Autochanger (LTO-3, FC, One
Drive) on RHEL 4 AS (32-bit). The only gotcha is that FC AL does not
work with the autochanger, and I was forced to use FC Point-to-Point.

If you are doing FC Point-to-Point you need to have an FC switch or a
multi-port FC HBA. My FC HBA only has one port. I was lucky enough to
have extra ports on my FC switch. I used these three extra ports on the
FC switch to make the connection between my HBA, the autochanger
robotics, and the one drive.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Mike

There are problems with the embedded Python:

1. Very few people use it.
2. I think most people would prefer Perl
3. It doesn't function perfectly since it is impossible to call certain
functions. I forgot the details but it is pretty annoying.
4. The links always print warning messages because they continue for something
like 4 versions now to use deprecated code for temp files that has security
problems.
5. The linking code is really quite complicated.
6. Python is single threaded, which means that if multiple Bacula threads try
to use Python at the same time, I have to block them allowing only one to run
at a time.
7. Given the above I would rather not support it -- and no one else is likely
to come forward and do so.

I don't have any intention of doing away with the basic labelformat. However
the vars code will eventually go, because it is mind bogglingly complicated
and doesn't really have all the functionality that the user wants. I was
hoping to replace it with the Python code, but Python just didn't work out.

Yes, so use Python for the moment. At some point you may have to change,
though I hope to provide you a way to get to Python without having it linked
in -- since I don't yet have it running, I cannot say what changes it may
need to the scripts.

Yes, I have a good idea, am working on it, but aside from a dummy little demo
(1/20 th of what I need), it is vaporware.

Version 3.0, probably won't be out until June of 2008 at the best. I hope it
will have a better alternative. Once I am sure I have a better solution, all
the old stuff will be removed in the following version -- after announcing
it.

Yes, 2.2.6 is due out in a week or so, and is a pure bug fix. The current
2.2.5 is looking really stable, and most of the bugs I have been fixing for
the last few months are long standing one ...

Both Python and variables for LabelFormat are likely to remain in in the
initial 3.0 release. Unless I have a Python replacement, which is unlikely.

That's a report of allocated and not (yet) freed memory blocks.

The key question is: When do you get these lines?

At program shutdown, there's not much to worry about them as they all
show small chunks of memory.

You forgot another quite important piece of information: The version
of Bacula you're running.

Re: [Bacula-users] multiple autochangers

All,
I am interested in purchasing another autochanger.

I am under the impression that the only way to conveniently (without the
annoyance of manual shuffling) use two autochangers is to have different
MediaTypes assigned to them. Is that correct?

Thx,
Mike

Ignore the warning for now, it's not an error.

The problem is that this volume is not recognized.

I think you should do the following:

1. umount the device from bconsole
2. issue 'setdebug level=400 trace=1 sd=LTO4_1',
3. wait for any messages, then 'setdebug level=0 trace=0 sd=LTO4_1'
4. find the lines in the resulting nfsserver-sd.trace file in the
SD's working directory where the tape is not accessible (you might
see something regarding a "rewind error".
5. use mtx to unload the tape from the drive
6. use mtx to load that same tape to the drive again (don't ask...)
7. in bconsole, issue 'mount sd=LTO4_1 slot=21'

According to my theory, your job should run then.
If it does, report back, please - it seems as this is a problem that
affects several installations.

If I'm guessing right, you'll find that everything works ok as long as
tapes from among one pool are exchanged, but once you use another
pool, Bacula doesn't accept the tape because it can't rewind it.

For me, this looks really weird.

If I get this confirmed by others, I'll file a bug report - unless
someone beats me at it :-)

Yes, that's still correct.

You can - and probably should - also set up different pools for use on
the devices, so that you don't have volumes from one pool assigned to
both devices, but that's an extra feature :-)

One filesystem would be enough - you don't have to foresee the space
you need per storage device, but they share a common available space.

Yes.

It should work, at least.

Of course, using one filesystem for several storage devices can limit
the overall throughput. If that's limited by network speed, yozu won't
have a problem. If you're backing up several FC-connected drive
arrays, this will be more of a problem :-)

If you want to have different retention times for full, differential,

in a way that you minimize the space occupied by jobs that are already

[Bacula-users] Auto-labeling volumes from Python

assigns a generated volume name to job.VolumeName. Is that all that's
needed for the system to label a new volume? Does it just label a new
volume using the defaults defined in bacula-dir.conf?

Thanks!

I am even as we speak working on implementing some Python code to

Yup.

I admit /usr/src/linux/Documentation/st.txt is hard to understand and

Possible. I wouldn't claim to know this, though :-) I suppose there

Actually, I start to prefer python - much more readable after a while,

Yes, that's something I and others noticed. In fact, this would need
to be fixed - by someone who knows how.

Yes, I even reported this to you once :-)

Hmm. I've been playing with embedding python into a C program, and
found it reasonably straightforward. And that's from someone who
ususally only uses ./configure && make && make install :-)

That's a serious problem, I think.

The support issue is probably the thing with the most weight here. But
you wrote you "would rather not", so I assume if someone is found who

No. Either you use the "plain" variant with LabelFormat, or you use
the python hooks, but the samples should be heavily modified. You
probably want a new volume name for each label you create, for example...

In fact, to implement a simple auto-labeling mechanism, you don't need
python. Just use "LabelFormat=Poolname-" and you get names like
"Full-0001", "Diff-00123" etc.

There's no real significance... nothing is mode 0, the default settings,
l is mode 1, m is mode 2 and a is mode 3. For some drives this allows
you to set the compression ratio (mode 1 being the lowest, mode 3 the
highest) some others use it for density settings etc etc but usually
it's not supported and unused.

[Bacula-users] Last piece of the puzzle...

2007-11-06 Thread David Gardner
Hey folks,

I have four servers I want to backup to a single volume, e.g., one file on BU
server or one tape (drive). It looks to me that I simply need the volume to be
appendable but I don't see a configuration setting to make this happen.

Currently, when a server's file set is backed-up, Bacula wants an appendable
volume or a new media. I'm so close, I can taste it

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula using one drive in a Vchanger

2007-11-06 Thread Elie Azar

Hi Josh,

I have upgraded to bacula 2.2.5 and I'm still having the same problems.

It seems like drive-1 in the vchanger is never used. Have you ever seen it
used, and if so, what kind of configuration do I need; I followed the
instruction in the HowTo document (Rev 0.7.4 2006-12-12). I tried many
configurations but I still can't get it to run more than one job. If I start
a second job it will fail.

What I'm trying to accomplish is the following: I created an LVM disk using
2x500GB disks. I created a vchanger with 2 virtual disks to backup to the
LVM. Originally I created the vchangers with multiple 500GB disks, but I
changed to use the LVM; that setup didn't work either. Even with one
vchanger per 500GB disk, I still couldn't start more than one job at a time.
I can the relevant parts of my conf files if that helps.

I would like to run concurrent jobs to backup to different volumes on the
LVM disk. Bacula doesn't seem to be able to do that. Every time I start more
than one job, each one after the first fails.

Here is a sample console output illustrating this problem:

Well, I was quite sure I saw a technical document once where it was
stated that, for single reel cartridges, retensioning was not
necessary because tape tension was actively controlled when moving the
tape.

Thus, once a tape is loaded and used, the tension would always be
correct (implying that, once you read a tape to its (physical) end and
rewound it, the tape on the cartridge reel would have the normal
tension again).

Unfortunately, I can't locate this document any more :-(

But IBM, for example, in
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S7001798&aid=1 states
that the Retension bit in the SCSI commands where it could be used is
not supported.

HP and Quantum don't have corresponding information available.

So, even while it might seem a good idea to have retensioning
procedure for single reel systems, there are reasons to assume you
don't need them. Furthermore, all the manufacturers agree how to
handle cartridges you dropped: don't use them (personally, I wouldn't
be that strict...)

Re: [Bacula-users] Can't run concurrent jobs to the same resource

2007-11-06 Thread Elie Azar

Hi,

I implemented a setup with one LVM disk (2x500GB drives) and an autochanger
with 2 virtual disks (disk-0 and disk-1) following the instructions in the
Vchanger HowTo document (rev. 0.7.4 2006-12-12).

I created the conf file for the vchanger, and I updatd the bacula-dir.conf
and bacula-sd.conf files with the approrpiate entries. I also setup "Max
Concurrent Jobs = 20" in the director conf file for the directives:
Director, Storage, Client, and Job, and in the storage deamon conf file for
the directive: Storage.

I can start one job at a time, and things work fine. But, if I start more
than one job, then there is no concurrency and every new job will fail.

Is there some trick for getting concurrency to work in bacula; I thought it
would just fall into place once things are setup properly. It seems to
always use disk-0 to bind to the volume it is backing up to; it never uses
disk-1, even though it part of the changer. Have you seen disk-1 used in
similar situations.

Thanks you for your help,
Elie

 Hi Arno,

 Thanks for the quick reply.

The intention is to have a single job per volume. What I would like
is for Bacula to pick up a new volume for the new job, even if it's
on the same storage device. I would imagine that it should be able
to backup multiple jobs to different volumes simultaneously.

Is the Bacula database corrupted? Why aren't the ACLs not being restored?

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula speed limitations?

It is quite possible that your catalog database cannot keep up with your
backups. I'd start there.

What if the incremental and full backups are to different media?

My practice is to have separate Incremental and Full pools, and
to run the daily Incremental even on Full Backup day, so that if
there is a media error on the Full tape, I still have a
reasonable hope of restoring everything to the state of that day,
using the combination of the previous Full tape, and the
intervening Incrementals.

In my setup, the Incrementals usually complete before any of the
Fulls start, but if something should prolong the Incremental so
it is still running after the Full starts, I could still see a
point to letting the Incremental run (unless its start time is
delayed to the point where it is basing its choice of what to
back up on the time of the concurrently running Full, rather than
the previous Incremental).
