[Bacula-users] Newly labelled tape does not get catalogged

2009-01-13 Thread David Gardner
Group,

You know when you see the message Please mount Volume Weekly-0007 or label a
new one for: _and_ you do label a new tape that it should then start being
written to, mine doesn't.

Can I run a SQL statement to manually insert the labeled tape into the catalog?
If so, what is the correct SQL statement?

Re: [Bacula-users] Newly labelled tape does not get catalogged

2009-01-13 Thread David Gardner
John,

Yep, I tried labeling a couple of tapes and mounted them but no joy. I guess
I'll have to bring the tapes back in-house to make the backups easy.

FWIW, I'm running Bacula 2.4.2 on this machine.

Did you try to label a tape at this point?

I do not think so. I am not sure bacula will reread the table.

[Bacula-users] MySQL server has moved...

2008-11-21 Thread David Gardner
Hey gang,

The mysqld (v.5.0.27) that my implementation of Bacula (v.2.4.2) used has moved
to a different server where multiple instances of mysqld is running. If I know
the port, the PID and the IP address of the new server, can I insert that
information into some Bacula configuration file and allow Bacula to start? If
so, which file and please provide syntax.

I could not find a good reference in the User's Guide, especially in the
section Installing and Configuring MySQL. The section Catalog Maintenance
was also of little help.

During the restore process, you'll get to a yes/no/mod prompt (or
something close to that). Select mod. This is how you can change the
Client and/or Where.

If you set Where to /, files will go back to where they were
 originally.

For example, if you are restoring /etc/foo, a / will put it back to
/etc/foo. /home/dan will put it to /home/dan/etc/foo

eh. The restore creates a couple of directories but is otherwise denied from

Re: [Bacula-users] Migration headaches

2007-12-18 Thread David Gardner
Had to eject the tape the re-insert the cartridge for Bacula to decide to
overwrite the tape. Bacula seems to be happily re-writing the tape.

In the meantime, I am restoring my previous configuration.

Final question...once the migration is complete, can I then move the tape back
into my Weekly pool and attempt restores from it?

Subject: [Bacula-users] Migration headaches

Hey gang,

Now this migration is becoming a headache.

I reread the migration section of the manual and though it does not
specifically say Do not migrate within a pool!, it does discourage the act.
With that, I created the Tape pool and moved one of my tapes from the Weekly
pool into the Tape pool and the source job to the Default pool. I updated
the volume status of the source to Full and the Volume retention time of the
target volume (tape) to 1 hour. The source job is no longer in the pool to
which it was directed so I modified the original job to look there.

DAMN! This is getting to be to much trouble to simply move a 25GB backup to a
tape...(but I bristle, back to the explanation at hand.)

When I run the migration now, bconsole complains that the
Weekly pool has no Next Pool statement. I thought I was migrating from the
Default pool...whatever, I inserted a Next Pool statement pointing at the
Tape pool and bconsole seems happy. It's been more than an hour since the
tape was last used so why if the migration appending to the tape instead of
overwriting?

Note to self, if the backup fails to start...terminate it. It may be easier to
restore...or will it given the above gyrations.

[Bacula-users] Spooled backup to tape blows away spooler directory after first client...

2007-12-07 Thread David Gardner
Hey guys,

I thought it an artifact last week that the spooler directory was blown away
while having trouble with the tape backup job. It happened again last night
without any other apparent issues.

The first clients files were spooled to /tmp/BUspool directory then put onto
tape. The next client tried to spool files to the same directory but it was
gone and the job failed as did the subsequent client backups. For the record,
the only difference between the daily and weekly backups is that the Dailies
are incrementals stored to disk while the weekly is a full backup to tape. All
jobs use the /tmp/BUspool directory to spool the jobs despite the settings in
bacula-sd.conf (see below).

I guess I have two questions:
1) Why is the BUspool folder getting blown away on spooled tape backups? and
2) How is it the disk-to-disk backups know to spool to the BUspool directory?

I wouldn't worry about the status storage output. I believe unless an
operation has taken place that would cause it to look up the pool, it
just doesn't know. list media is what counts.

 correction
For the record, when labeling tapes in Bconsole and have them go into
the desired pool, the pool for the volume is *unknown* when viewed
with the bconsole command status storage. When I issue the list
volumes command, the volume is in the correct pool.

Re: [Bacula-users] Maximum Volume Size exceeded Error

2007-11-29 Thread David Gardner
John,

As a matter of fact, I did (which is a different issue.) When I started the
back up, I had 50GB left on the volume. The typical backup consumes only 25 GB
The size of the Wednesday5 volume. When I issued list volumes within
bconsole, Wednesday volume was at 77GB and of course the media was fully
consumed. So, the Wednesday5 volume should have been overwritten instead of
tripling it's size (no, 50GB of new data was not created yesterday.)

For the record, this happens several times per week and I have to manually
delete old volumes.

How many volumes do you have in the Wednesday pool? I hope more than
 5
because bacula will not reuse any volume that is currently being used
 in the running backup.

Ok. I see that is not the reason. Did you run out of space on the
 filesystem?

Re: [Bacula-users] All the problems with Bacula

2007-11-21 Thread David Gardner
Hey gang,

I think the Bacula project is a good solution for those just need to get the
job done; nothin' flashy. Having said that, the manual needs to be split into
a technical manual and a HOWTO guide. The HOWTO guide would have plenty of
examples and even more references to the technical manual.

The single most helpful example for me (and perhaps others) _would_ have been a
walk through for setting up the .conf files to backup/verify/restore files from
multiple systems. Bar none! Without that, the learning curve is steep
especially for those with little time to implement a good solution.

For the record, I too am trying to figure out why a mounted labeled tape in
the correct pool will not be recognized...but that's another thread.

DL == Dan Langille [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Bacula is incredibly complex to setup. Its taken 4 months and its
 still not working correctly.

DL You are unique.

I doubt he's unique. I constantly think to myself wow, bacula is
really cool; but why isn't it doing that?

The configuration is complex to set up (but with flexibility always
comes complexity; and bacula is very flexible). Fortunately there are
many good resources to look at, but sorting through them all to find
what you want is sometimes difficult.

Personally, I've been using it for 2 months. On day one I got it up
 and
running and backing up multiple computers (windows and linux both).
But, I've still had issues with it backing up files I didn't want it to
(no doubt my fault), failing to write DVDs properly (questionable
 fault,
but I think I've fixed that through a patch to the dvd-handler),
 failing
to recycle volumes that I believe it should (no doubt my fault). But
even after all that, the flexibility is very necessary for me and I'm
going to keep plugging away at it (just yesterday I had to re-learn
 that
volume longevity for previously created volumes is in the DB, not
relearned from a modified config. Which makes sense, but when you're
editing the config it's easy to forget).

So, let me say: thanks to all the developers of bacula. I know what
it's like to run an OSS project and get yelled at (I've started a
 number
at this point). Realize that the vast majority of your users are very
happy with your work (myself included). Kudos to you all for your time
and even more importantly: your patience in helping us through
problems. Outstanding support!

One thing that I did with one of my more successful projects was to
think of ways to reduce the confusion based on the questions sent to
 the
mailing list. When I got a ton of questions in area X, I decided that
area X needed usability improvements. My thinking about it always
resulted in less questions about X in the future, which was a plus.
Something to consider (or ignore) at will...

Now, the down side is that the questions didn't stop. They just got
harder. If you remove the easier-to-understand problems users start
asking questions about the harder areas of a project because they get
farther ;-)

Final word: I love bacula and wouldn't switch away from it if I had a
choice. But I'm still on the learning curve, and it isn't small. But
very very worth it. Thanks again!

Re: [Bacula-users] BU 2 tape does not see newly labeled tape

2007-11-21 Thread David Gardner
Thank you for your time John.

I tend to use the (grey beard) umount command with bconsole. I know it
un-mounts the tape and is ready to accept a new tape for labeling or such tasks.

It didn't make sense to 'release' a tape (volume) especially if the backup is
going to span multiple cartridges.

Let me be clear what I intend to happen: Friday -Wednesday are Diff's to hard
drive volumes, Thursday full backup to tape(s). Thursday tapes go off-site.

Subject: Re: [Bacula-users] BU 2 tape does not see newly labeled tape

I'm going to rephrase my question about my difficulty backing up to
 tape.

Given the following volume listing from bconsole and my
 bacula-dir.conf
file, will the backup to tape occur when required or will Bacula
 (v.2.2.5)
again ask for appendable media in the WeeklyPool?

Did you unmount the last tape using the unmount or umount command
instead of the release command?

Basically if you use the unmount command it unmounts the tape and
removes it from bacula's access so that you can use the tape drive
with a different utility. As a result of that when you put a new tape
in bacula will not automatically load the tape until the user issues a
mount command in bacula.

With the release command the tape is ejected but bacula retains full
control of the drive so that after inserting a new tape bacula will
automatically mount it if you have automount configured in your conf
files.

If this is not you issue please tell me and I will try to look at your
conf files.

John

 Hey Gang,

I'm going to rephrase my question about my difficulty backing up to
 tape.

Given the following volume listing from bconsole and my
 bacula-dir.conf
file, will the backup to tape occur when required or will Bacula
 (v.2.2.5)
again ask for appendable media in the WeeklyPool?

I think it will ask again.

The console message should say exactly what it is asking for. Please
 post it.

[Bacula-users] Fw: BU 2 tape does not see newly labeled tape

2007-11-21 Thread David Gardner
John, (sorry for the repeat here)

Your assessment is on the mark. This for my clarification...

Do:
I insert a blank tape, label and mount it.
The Thursday night BU commences and backs up the first 36 GB to the first
tape.
When the intervention is required, I release the tape and insert a new
tape to complete the BU.
This second tape gets labeled, mounted and pooled appropriately.
When the backup is completed, is umount the tape.
Until I get an automounter, larger tape drive or both. ;)

Subject: Re: [Bacula-users] BU 2 tape does not see newly labeled tape

I tend to use the (grey beard) umount command with bconsole. I know
 it
un-mounts the tape and is ready to accept a new tape for labeling or
 such
 tasks.

It will be ready of labeling or mounting but it will not auto mount.
That is the difference between the commands. I had this problem a long
time ago and release saved me some headaches.

It didn't make sense to 'release' a tape (volume) especially if the
 backup
is going to span multiple cartridges.

Let me be clear what I intend to happen: Friday -Wednesday are Diff's
 to
hard drive volumes, Thursday full backup to tape(s). Thursday tapes
 go
 off-site.

So after the last tape on Thursday issue the release command to eject
it then insert friday's tape and bacula should handle it.

Or am I misunderstanding??

Martin,

I was surprised to find the /tmp/BUspool directory no present. All of my jobs
from other servers get spooled to there. I cannot tell from the log files or
the bash_history files how it got blown away though. (A different issue...)

Anyway, the directory has been recreated

 Martin,

I appreciate your help in this matter.

The job never terminates, ever. Output from the messages command at
 the console are as follows:

Please use the label command to create a new Volume for:
 Storage: FileStorage (/tmp)
 Pool: WeeklyPool
 Media type: File

 ...snip...

Okay, the storage is incorrect in my bacula-dir-storage.conf file.
The Weekly scheduled BU to tape should read:

 Run = Level=Full Pool=WeeklyPoolStorage=DAT72 Thursday at 22:00

Right, that is what I suspected might happen.

This just leaves me with the dealing with the error:

21-Nov 12:51 DURANGO-sd JobId 104: Fatal error: Open data spool file

 /tmp/BUspool/DURANGO-sd.data.104.DB2-Full.2007-11-21_12.51.08.DAT72.spool
failed: ERR=No such file or directory

Does the spool file not get closed after each use?

It uses a new spool file for every job (hence the long name!).

Does the directory /tmp/BUspool exist on DURANGO-sd? A missing
 directory is
the only way I can see to get ERR=No such file or directory there.

[Bacula-users] Include statements in bacula-dir.conf file

2007-11-08 Thread David Gardner
Hey gang,

Can I break the bacula-dir.conf file in parts for easier management?
Specifically, does bacula understand the include (or some variation thereof)
to read in the various parts of the bacula-dir.conf file?

Along the same line of reasoning, can the developers add the reload argument
to the Bacula executable? This would be nice when a small tweak to the
bacula-dir.conf file has been made and does not require a full restart of the
system.

2007-11-08 Thread David Gardner
Heavens no, Chris!

I refer to Bacula as the system to restart.

My apologies to the list if the requested information is in the manual and I
didn't find it. I've had a rough time implementing this system per my manager's
requirements.

I'm use to working with Apache (amoung other systems) that recognizes include
file-path/-name in the configuration file. Reloading the system is generally
done from the command prompt.

Again, my apologies.

I'd like to again request the reload argument be an option to the bacula
executable.

Perhaps I'm being a little too paranoid for my own good but if the last
paragraph of the bconsole | reload section on pg 264 of the user guide is any
indication, I would not feel comfortable adding new clients to a production
situation in this manner.

[Bacula-users] Last piece of the puzzle...

2007-11-06 Thread David Gardner
Hey folks,

I have four servers I want to backup to a single volume, e.g., one file on BU
server or one tape (drive). It looks to me that I simply need the volume to be
appendable but I don't see a configuration setting to make this happen.

Currently, when a server's file set is backed-up, Bacula wants an appendable
volume or a new media. I'm so close, I can taste it

Re: [Bacula-users] Disk-to-disk-tape backups

2007-10-29 Thread David Gardner
Michael,

I need the D2D2T feature or at the very least disk spooling because I am stuck
using an HP Ext. USB(v2) DAT72 drive and the links between servers are slow. I
suppose I could setup Rsync between the servers then fire off the backup

I've successfully used the backup to file feature but the remote disk to tape
fails consistently.

Hi David,

Maybe it can, maybe it can't but I'm sure it can be emulated. bacula's volumes
on disk (media type = file) for instance are similar to tape streams, so
technically speaking you can use bacula's own duplicate backup mechanism for
making a backup to disk and to tape immediately after which looks more or less
like d2d2t to me. Mind, this is not using disk spooling which is a different
feature altogether.

What feature of d2d2t is so important ?

Michael

[Bacula-users] need help defining client files for backup...

2007-10-23 Thread David Gardner

Hey gang,

I've read through all the docs I can find on the subject but just
cannot decipher the correct method of describing in a fileset which
directories on which client machine should be backed up.

Here's the Linux Server:/directories I want backed up where the
connections have all been made and I successfully backed up the local files:

{localhost:}/home/*
RptEngine1:/usr/local/reports/A*.pdf
DB2:/var/lib/mysql/*
WEB1:/web/sites/*

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Bacula-users] need help defining client files for backup...

2007-10-23 Thread David Gardner
Arno,

Are you suggesting I create multiple fileset (directives) within
bacula-dir.conf? If so, how do I identify the fileset with the client?

That is the root of my confusion, I cannot figure out how to correlate a group
of files/directories with hosts.

You define the necessary clients first.

Then you create the filesets you need - there will be at least four of
them.

/home/, /var/lib/mysql/, and /web/sites/ are easy.

/usr/local/reports/A*.pdf will need wildcards or regexes in an options
clause.

Nte that backing up the mysql database files while the database server
is running is useless - you need to shut down the database server, or
dump the databases you're interested in to a file and back up that (or
these) files.

Hope that gets you started,

Arno

Guys,

If I understand you correctly, the following should be a_piece_ of the
bacula-dir.conf. I want to understand this but the problem still remains, how
do I tie the files on WEB1, DB2 and RptEngine into the default job?
