[beagleboard] [BBB] PRUSS and EPWM and EQEP

2014-03-21 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi all,

I've seen that many used PRUSS in order to generate the PWM signal needed
to drive DC motors...
Given that on the sitara already has there are the controllers that do it
in HW, I was wondering if it is feasible to program the PWMSS subsystem of
the Sitara, driving it from within the PRUSS implementing here the PID
controller, minimizing the intervention of the ARM core on the low level
motor control.

 Lets... see..

 https://github.com/cdsteinkuehler/linux-dev/blob/3.8.13-bone39-xenomai/version.sh#L32

 branch/tag: 3.8.13-bone39-xenomai
 build: BUILD=bone39

Just checkout the branch like a normal user.

- git clone https://github.com/cdsteinkuehler/linux-dev
- git checkout origin/3.8.13-bone39-xenomai -b
some_local_temp_branch_name

 Hi Robert,

This would be the easiest solution, but Charles doesn’t always keep up
to date with your latest patches. Last I checked, Charles was still at
bone36 when you were at bone41. The way I do this is to checkout both your
linux-dev and Charles linux-dev and then use BeyondCompare to update your
repo with the xenomai changes from Charles repo. I only have to do this
once and thereafter, I simply pull from your updates and I get the latest
 updates.

I understand that I should be able to track both repos using GIT, and
get updates from both, but I don’t know how to do this.

 Regards,
 John

Re: [beagleboard] Read current register values in BBB during OS running

2014-02-10 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
If they are memory mapped register you can also use a tool like devmem2 or
mmap yourself the register to access them directly.

This is not real linux style and a bit dangerous and certainly not portable
at all-- but you can do it

Distributors in Italy (RS components, Mouser, Farnell) are still without
boards. RS says you can reserve boards for April...

I have had Qty 1 on back-order from Digikey since Jan 13th. I would

cover back orders, and yet I am still waiting for one board?

Any clues as to what is happening here?

Please tell me what did you load from the Graphics SDK?

Re: [beagleboard] SGX drivers on Kernel 3.8.13

2014-01-08 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
I built the kernel successfully and installed it and now if I try with the
demo included in GFX sdk I get:

ubuntu@arm:~/Graphics_SDK_setuplinux_5_00_00_01/gfxsdkdemos/ogles2$ *sudo
./OGLES2ChameleonMan *
[sudo] password for ubuntu:
PVRShell: EGL 1.4 initialized
Exit message has been set to: "PVRShell: Unable to create surface
".
InitAPI failed!
PVRShell: Unable to create surface

ubuntu@arm:~$ *uname -a*
Linux arm 3.12.6-bone11.1 #1 SMP Wed Jan 8 10:47:12 CET 2014 armv7l armv7l
armv7l GNU/Linux

ubuntu@arm:~$ *lsmod*
Module Size Used by
omaplfb10139 0
bufferclass_ti 5803 0
snd_soc_omap2834 0
snd_pcm_dmaengine 6073 1 snd_soc_omap
pvrsrvkm 178420 2 bufferclass_ti,omaplfb

Any suggestion?

Hi Olof,

I'm Struggling with this SGX stuff,
I'm building the Robert kernel and it seems to work, but in the Graphics
SDK 5_01_00_01 instructions it says* Ensure that the NFS target is setup *

What NFS target have you used??

Thanks,

I strongly think that it's for the 3.8 kernel, But I'm waiting your
 confirmation :)

Looks like this patch is for the 3.12 kernel.

[beagleboard] Re: PWM: changing Period of EHRPWM

Hi,

the problem is a bug in pwm_test so that once you enabled two channels of
the same ehrpwm you cannot change the period.

Try look at

 Hi

I'm just starting out, but here is what I found. Hopefully it can help
 you.
The period must be greater than duty.
 This worked fine for me:
 echo 10 > /sys/devices/ocp.2/pwm_test_P9_14.12/period
Period is given in ns. Duty is given in ns on/off depending on polarity.

but if you fall into coma when someone starts talking about programming...
maybe you've to hire someone

Hi,

I've tried to build pwm_test under 3.12 and it works seamless BUT the
dts_common file is hesvy changed so I didn't figure how to match the old
overlay with the new kernel... after that I gave up and went back to 3.8.13.

I'm also interested in other experience

Re: [beagleboard] Help: "Fast" ADC sampling on the beagleboneblack

2013-11-27 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
@Fe wi

John is totally right, I'd like to add that you don't have to mmap linux
devices like those in /dev or via /sys but you have to map directly
register,

e.g. in my case (the eqep)

...
constexpr uint32_t eQEP1phAdd=0x48302180; // if you look at am335x TRM this
is the base address of the eqep
map_base = mmap(0, MAP_SIZE, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, fd, (
eQEP1phAdd) & ~MAP_MASK );
...
Please note that I'm continuing to use the linux drivber to the initial
configuration of the device...

[beagleboard] Re: Help: "Fast" ADC sampling on the beagleboneblack

2013-11-26 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi,

I'm using the same kernel (with xenomai) as you, and I'm facing a similar
issue with the encoder interface

If you use xenomai and then access via sysfs to the driver you0re causing a
domain switch to linux OS over xenomai.
Moreover this way in any cycle you're issuing to many syscalls to reach
high frequencies.

Just this morning I've tried to sample the encoder not using the sysfs
interface but mmaping the device counter to the xenomai task and i
experienced a big performance bump.

[beagleboard] kernel 3.12 and SGX: something is moving

It seems that something is moving, even if this is not a BBB specific

[beagleboard] Re: Kernel 3.12 and PWM_TEST

2013-11-20 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
I've not recorded it but I followed the instruction from

http://eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone+Black#BeagleBoneBlack-SerialLogin

then I downloaded and applied the patch from

https://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RT_PREEMPT_HOWTO

It seems to apply surprisingly clean even if this was not a vanilla kernel.

After that i've built pwm_test as a module out of tree.

(as a side note, I've reverted to the 3.8.13+xenomai and it seems to suit
my needs...)

[beagleboard] Kernel 3.12 and PWM_TEST

2013-11-18 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi all,

Yesterday I've compiled a 3.12 kernel and applied tha PREEMPT_RT patch on
it. It seems to be working, but I've noted that pwm_test.c module was not
included, so I've built it and loaded and everything seems to work, except
that the overlay aren't working now, because the common DTS file has seen
the deletion of the "ocp", I'm not a device tree superexpert, any advice on
how to overcome this issue?

Should I merge back the old dts ocp {} or change the target = <&ocp>; from
the bone_pwm*** files?

Has anyone tried it??

Yes I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 as my userland.

It is working faily well but sometimes (once in a second) I have latancies
that approaces 1 ms... I'm reasoning about writing a xenomai kernel space
driver for PWM/eqep

[beagleboard] Re: Patching the kernel to read encoders

2013-11-07 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi,

I just did it and I followed the instruction on

http://eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone+Black

and then you can patch the whole with

https://github.com/SaadAhmad/beaglebone-black-cpp-PWM

and

https://github.com/Teknoman117/beaglebot/tree/master/encoders/patches

It should be straightforward BUT please note that you should read the Soc
Manual because the default settings Teknoman choose for the eQep not
necessarly will match what you will need (for example when do you want your
counts conter to reset?)

Gerald I didn't want to upset you. Your support is certainly first class.

But this is the way linux works and works good. Things keep changing,
I think that one couldn't blame linux folks for their work... and really it
seems a little strange to me that for a company so big like TI is difficult
to implement the needed update...

Re: [beagleboard] SGX drivers on Kernel 3.8.13

2013-10-25 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
It seems that such a kernel doesn't exist and reading last Gerald post (as
always thank you for the support) it could never exist again...

In my project I'll use two beagle : one for embedded layer (in which I'm
using 3.8.13 - xenomai patched) one for the gui, in which I don't need more
than HDMI e OpenGl support...

[beagleboard] eQep -quadrature encoder controller - anybody using it?

2013-10-11 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi all,

Since I want to use Beaglebone black in order to perform e motor position
controller I need to use an Encoder.
I'm struggling with the eQep configuration.

Searching other posts I found this:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/beagleboard/encoder/beagleboard/mE_ha4zOApM/VewMCyQx37kJ

In which Teknoman117 released his own version of a kernel module driver.

I compiled it, and it seems to work except that the posiotion sysfs entry
is always 0.

Has anybody ever used it?
Or Has anybaody used the eQep?

I'm using a 3.8.13bone28 kernel with xenomai extensions...

Hi David,

the simplest thing you could do is to rebuild the kernel driver using the
patches as explained here.

[beagleboard] State of the Linux Kernel 3.12

2013-10-08 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi all,

I'm developing a setup using two BBB, one as High Level Controller / GUI
and one used as Low Level Controller/motor driver board.

For the GUI i would like to use some nice OpenGl accelerated GUI, and I've
read in some old messages that this should be integrated in 3.12 kernel.

Is there any news in this regard? Apart from USB is kernel 3.12 usable at
the moment?

[beagleboard] [PWM] Changing two Duty Cycle in a synchronized way.

2013-10-03 Thread Giuseppe Iellamo
Hi all,

In my travel with BBB, I have succeded in driving a brushed dc motor with
the BeagleBone Black but the interface given by pwm_test kernel module
operate on one pwm at time.

The fact is that I need to to drive two complementary signals, so when I
modify the duty cicle of one PWM i need to modify the other.

Do you think that this is possible with the current module PWM_test ot do
you think I need to develop a brand new module?

Giuseppe

With the help of Charles Steinkuehler I brought up Xenomai on my BBB and it
seems to work very well. The post is here:

[beagleboard] StarterWare on beaglebone black?

Is it possible to use beaglebone black with Starterware without using a
JTAG connector?

I'm currently using a UBUNTU distro but I wanted to do a motor control
application...
