As I said:

The only way to listen to LastFM radio on your Squeezebox right now is
still to use the SqueezeScrobbler plugin.

Are you a subscriber to LastFM?
Is this in the player or web page?

You should see the extra stations immediately if you are a subscriber.

Ah, I can see where this is going wrong.
LastFM tells us whether you're a subscriber or not.
But when the plugin first starts, we haven't asked them yet!

I could change the plugin to default to thinking everyone is a
subscriber I suppose...

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SqueezeScrobbler problem..please help

2008-01-09 Thread James

Yes, I'm looking at fixing the subscriber behaviour.

The LastFM plugin should have the same effect as listening with the
LastFM player. When LastFM music is 'scrobbled' it has a different tag
from normal music so it can be treated differently by LastFM, but
should be consistent with their own player.
It could be the scrobbling is broken though, I think there's a bug
right now when you use SoftSqueeze to listen. Check the log and see if
the tracks are actually being submitted.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Default skin causing 100% CPU in Firefox???

2008-01-24 Thread James

Where should I be looking in Firebug? I don't really see much going on!

What should changing the debug setting in cmdwrappers_Default do as
well? It just seems to have removed the background from the web page.

I've managed to recreate the 100% CPU usage with all plugins disabled
now, really can't work out what's causing it. Occasionally it just
works fine though!

Oh I see the profile option now. Wierdly, if Firebug is visible, the
default skin doesn't use any CPU time. And if I hide Firebug, Default
uses only 50% CPU time, not 100%!

But here's the result of a couple of minutes of profiling at 50% CPU
usage (I couldn't work out how to save or copy this text so I attached
a picture)

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Default skin causing 100% CPU in Firefox???

No, I didn't do anything during that time. Still 100% CPU (or 50%
although I can't reproduce that)
Doesn't seem like it's anything that Firebug can measure.

I've just tried a new profile and a new installation of Firefox and I
still get the same effect.

The fact that it doesn't happen if I put a window on top of Firefox
(but not completely covering it) makes me wonder if it's some graphics
driver issue. I doubt I have much chance of identifiying that if it is
though!

LastFM tell the plugin if you're a subscriber, which is what causes it

This looks like a bug in SqueezeCenter. SqueezeScrobbler is just

[SlimDevices: Beta] problem with plugin webpages in 6.5

2006-01-29 Thread James

I'm down to just one problem left in my plugins with 6.5 so here it is:

Essentially, my plugin's web page handling function does not get called
if the link carries any extra parameters beyond the player name. So a
request for LastFM/index.html?player=... works fine. But add some more
parameters and the function never gets called. SlimServer never even
returns a page for the request.
You can see the debug output from -d_http below for the two situations.
Note no 'LastFM' messages in the 2nd case. I see exactly the same
behaviour from my other plugin with a web interface.

I haven't changed the code in this area from 6.2 because I'm not aware
any were required? Am I wrong or is there a bug here?

This is just the LastFM/SlimScrobbler integration. The recently played
artists list in SLimScrobbler is used to build some stations for
LastFM. So nothing to worry about here.

dth122 Wrote:
> - Up at the top it says it has a problem with my username

This is also fine. LastFM plugin asks the SlimScrobbler plugin for the
login, and SlimScrobbler is just noting that LastFM didn't ask for any
specific user.

dth122 Wrote:
> - After the SB resets itself, the web interface progress bar continues

That's because the web interface is pretty dumb! I would expect that.

I really can't see anything 'wrong' in the log, although the sequence
of commands doesn't look entirely right - there are two 'opens', and a
'play' - Did you do anything after LastFM playback started?

LastFM then thinks the streaming has stopped for a couple of minutes.
It does that sometimes, but usually only after you change stations or
send a command.

Then there's a 'stop' and nothing for four minutes - until the
Squeezebox was restarted?

It would seem like the problem is at the Squeezebox, but if that was
the case I would expect to see lots of people having this problem!

You don't press FFWD to skip LastFM tracks!
You need to select the 'Skip' option from the LastFM menu.

Strange that would crash the Squeezebox though. Maybe it is trying to
fast-forward the stream and getting very upset about it?

I will try and reproduce this myself...

[SlimDevices: Beta] LastFM stream opening problem in 6.5

2006-07-04 Thread James

The LastFM plugin seems to have a problem introduced in SlimServer 6.5 -
starting the LastFM stream now rarely works from within the plugin, yet
usually works when starting from a stream saved in the playlist.

The plugin calls $client->execute(['playlist','play',$url])to start the
stream. It seems to me that this triggers a connection to the address to
determine the stream type. Then this connection is closed and reopened
for streaming?
Unfortunately the 2nd connection very rarely works and locks up the
player UI with a "Connecting" message. The internet radio timeout
setting is ignored and the player will stay in this state
indefinitely.

If one cancels the connection (by holding pause) and starts playback
directly from the LastFM url now available in the current playlist, the
initial scan of the the stream does not occur and the connection for
playback is usually successful very quickly! If one stops the stream
and restarts from the plugin, the scan occurs again and streaming never
starts.

It seems to me that the LastFM stream may not like the multiple
attempts to connect in quick succession?
Is there any way I can stop this from happening?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Re: LastFM stream opening problem in 6.5

2006-07-05 Thread James

Ah, that seems to do it.

I added a custom-types.conf file:
lastfm lastfm: - audio

Then I added a custom-convert.conf lines:
lastfm mp3 * *
-
and registered lastfm: with the standard HTTP module as the handler.

Is there any way to avoid needing the conf files? Is the convert
definition OK for all configurations?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Re: LastFM stream opening problem in 6.5

2006-07-05 Thread James

Sorry probably wasn't very clear. It's working fine with the three steps
above - it was very easy to do! I didn't even create a new protocol
handler, just registered the standard HTTP for lastfm:.

I just wondered if in particular the custom-conv.conf addition is
required/correct.
Given that I have indicated lastfm will be a stream of type audio/mpeg,
why do I further have to add a link between lastfm & mp3? (It didn't
work without this) Will this still work if for example someone has set
a bitrate limit lower than the stream size?

Maybe I could have just put
mp3 lastfm: - audio
in the custom-types.conf and left it at that? (I'll try that once I
sort the 6.3 plugin out)

[SlimDevices: Beta] Re: LastFM stream opening problem in 6.5

2006-07-05 Thread James

To answer myself (bad habit) the request handler must be registered for
'lastfm' otherwise it's not treated as a remote stream.
Adding 'lastfm:' to the mp3 type works fine and removes the need for
the custom-convert.conf file.

thanks all

Richard, is there something one has to do to enable the mouse-wheel
scrolling in a custom menu?
It works fine in the main menus but stops when entering the menu for
one of my plugins e.g. LastFM main menu. And then works again in the
sub-menus which are generated using INPUT.List.

Seems like it doesn't generate the standard up/down function call?

nope this is in Firefox.
I looked a bit closer...
the pictures with white backgrounds, link to this:

And the ones with black backgrounds have links like this - but with a
different url each time.

What's that all about? Could they be leftovers from an older version of

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Is 7.0 still going beta today (8/17)?

2007-08-22 Thread James

One reason is because both installations will use the same database by
default. You need to change the line in the server.prefs file that sets
the database:

dbsource: dbi:mysql:hostname=127.0.0.1;port=9092;database=slimserver7

database is normally %s, so here I've overridden it to use a different
one for my 7.0 install.

Make sure there's no other overlap in your config files, e.g. different
cache directories are required.

7.0 is working fine for me too apart from some issues with the iTunes
import.

Thanks Andy - yes, it is --abr.

Transcoding to flac isn't a standard config option is it?
I guess one could disable AAC->MP3, but I don't think I can do that

[SlimDevices: Beta] Playlists - problems and suggestions

2005-09-02 Thread Craig, James (IT)
I've been playing around with playlists in 6.2 and encountered a number
of bugs/issues that I haven't seen discussed anywhere else.
Throwing them out here before I start putting anything in bugzilla...
(Note these are all relating to the default skin, 6.2 from 2005/09/02
and Windows XP)

1) How can one add an internet radio station to an existing playlist?
You can do it fine if the station is accessed through a menu with
play/add buttons, but not from the various tune in pages.
This makes creating a playlist of your favourite stations almost
impossible through SlimServer. Options would be creating 'play/add'
buttons or an 'add new track' button in the edit playlist page.

2) saving/editing an already existing playlist is very confusing.
You have to select the 'overwrite' option and then click 'rename
playlist'?
But I haven't renamed the playlist and don't want to!
Couldn't this be done with a javascript pop-up or at least change the
button names?
If I 'edit' a playlist are the changes saved automatically or do I need
to resave?

3) The playlist ordering in 'browse playlists' seems broken. For example
how does this happen?

iTunes: 90's Music PlayAdd to playlist
iTunes: Party Shuffle PlayAdd to playlist
iTunes: Recently Played PlayAdd to playlist
iTunes: Top 25 Most Played PlayAdd to playlist
II PlayAdd to playlist
xxx PlayAdd to playlist
XXX PlayAdd to playlist
Internet Radio PlayAdd to playlist

5) saving the playlist seems broken. For example, I added a station from
SlimDevices' Picks to a new playlist and saved it. I then 'played' it
(to replace the current playlist) and the internet station had been
replaced with a track called '50' that didn't exist. Attempting to edit
the playlist from the GUI caused a crash. These errors were in the log:

destroyed without saving changes to age at slimserver.pl line 0

6) Seems like SlimServer dumps the playlists to disk for safekeeping in
case I wipe the cache? But note from the example above that the GUI has
allowed me to create two playlists which have the same name within
non-casesensitive Windows (xxx.m3u/XXX.m3u) and hence can't be saved to
the filesystem!

After all that, I do like the way it's going... But...

[SlimDevices: Beta] "no album" behaviour

2005-10-06 Thread Craig, James (IT)

Can I get SS to just show the selected artist's tracks?

this a 'common album name' issue?)

RE: [SlimDevices: Beta] Softsqueeze track progress problem

Yes, I have!
Quite frequently as of a couple of weeks ago but it seemed to have gone
last time I updated the version (about a week ago) and did a full
rescan.

It was quite unusual, even the web interface was one track behind, yet
SS knew what track was playing because iTunesUpdate/SlimScrobbler were
catching the correct track. Stopping and restarting the playlist was
fixing the problem each time.

I was playing a track, which reported a track length of 05:05. The
track played fine, but then started to play the next song without
updating the display, which was still trying to report progress through
the previous track. The progress bar was at 100%, and the time
remaining reported negative negative minutes and seconds, eg: --1:-12.
After that, as each track finished, the now-playing display was one
track behind what was actually playing.

I went back to the first track that cause the problem and played it
again without any issues. I haven't been able to repeat the problem
yet.

I can't see any related bugs. Anyone seen a problem like this before?

Matt,
Please check your iTunes rescan interval, under Server Settings->iTunes.
You're probably rescanning the iTunes library every time a track plays.
So set it to a much higher number, or use 0 to disable it and schedule a
rescan with the rescan plugin.

I do mention this in the plugin readme file but it seems like no-one
reads this!

RE: [SlimDevices: Beta] 6.2 / iTunes 5 compatability problems

2005-11-02 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Neil,
This is most likely because SlimServer is rescanning the iTunes library.
You can change the interval or disable it completely from Server
Settings->iTunes.

I am surprised you didn't notice this in earlier versions, it's always
been a problem.
I have had a bug open on this for some time.

RE: [SlimDevices: Beta] Re: 6.2 / iTunes 5 compatability problems

2005-11-03 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Neil,
Unless you have a tiny iTunes library this just isn't going to work at
present.
My rescan (10,000 tracks) takes 20 minutes so expecting updates every 5
minutes seems a little optimistic!
I gave up on regular updates to the library a long time ago, and now
live with a daily scheduled rescan while I'm asleep.
There is a bug (1469) open on this issue if you want to add your
thoughts.

I also dont believe you'll be able to update a playlist that is being
played.
If you select an iTunes playlist for playback, you're actually playing a
copy of it so it will be unaffected by any rescan changes.

Faced with these constraints I wrote a plugin that plays from iTunes
party shuffle, allowing you to access a smart playlist almost
dynamically (at one remove).
It only supports Windows but I may be able to get it to work on the Mac
if Mac users (such as yourself) are interested in testing it!

Updating the podcasts will change the itunes library, which triggers the

Anyway, it does seem to be a trend that the new iTunes parser in 6.2

RE: [SlimDevices: Beta] iTunes performance fix in latestnightlyreleases.

Thanks Dean.

That makes sense and means I need to perform a more thorough test!

Phil, I fixed the plugin for 6.5 some time ago,
although the song title not displayed in 'now playing' is bug 3607

RE: [SlimDevices: Beta] SlimScrobble warnings with 6.5 split scanner

2006-07-03 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Phil,
I missed this at the weekend...

It probably means you have two copies of SlimScrobbler within the
possible locations for Plugins. (I find it very unlikely that SlimServer
now comes with a copy of Stopwatch, as that was written for Scrobbler by
the original author).

Also, as I said elsewhere, I have checked in a new version of
SlimScrobbler with the required changes for 6.5 (Plugin.pm is the only
file that needed changing)

Dan,
When running a scheduled rescan, I see a similar problem. My squeezebox
is off, on datetime screensaved.
When the rescan starts, the player displays a message 'rescanning
library' for about 2 minutes.
Then the display changes to the head of the main menu for about 2
minutes.
The player is completely unresponsive for this time.
Then the date-time screensaver starts again and all key-presses issued
during the lockup take effect!

I don't think that's the problem - I have SlimScrobbler, iTunesUpdate &
TrackStat all installed and no warnings.
OSX (and some forms of Linux) are a special case because you can install
a plugin in two different places, that appear identical to the server.

Cream probably is that colour for me - I'm using the default XP theme.

Softsqueeze changes are nice anyway guys!
I can't see the SB3 skin getting much use as it's a lot of wasted space
compared to SB2 but the Transporter skin is very interesting, and will
be very useful for the 99% of us that won't be buying one!

Could I suggest putting the 'windows' buttons such as minimize etc.
inside/on the picture of the squeezebox rather than outside ?
(If that's possible)

Cheeky. There's been a version of iTunesUpdate for 6.5 ever since 6.5
was available!
