Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Missing album art in recent build

2011-03-17 Thread dwilliams01

Any news on this. You cannot use a drive letter when it is run as a
service and that would be a very NORMAl way to do it. UNC is a much
better way, overall, than old school drive letters, anyway. It is
portable accross machines and doesn't require complete consistency in
setup - which drive letters do.

I've voted too... Please prioritize it higher.

Thanks!!

orphaned product, a replacement would certainly be welcome. Are there
any that could be?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Install problem with 31943 nightly (minor)

2011-02-26 Thread dwilliams01

This morning it wanted to auto-update with 31943 (I noticed that the web
page has 31945).

However I recieved an error when it was installing. The file
scanner.exe could not be replaced with an error code of 5.

I hit retry several times, no change.
I checked and it wasn't running so I renamed it with widows explorer,
hit retry again, and it finished installing.

Mentioning it in case someone else wants the workaround. Also, wanting
to know if it is an issue just with my setup or something that will need
to be fixed, etc.

Thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner changes in 7.4

2009-07-26 Thread dwilliams01

OK, spoke a bit too soon.

A few odd things:

1) Scanning reported that it was complete. Shut down SbS and
restarted. SbS reported that it was rescanning but it wasn't. No
scanner.exe was running or was started. Hitting the abort option caused
it to report the completion time that it had reported previously.

2) There was nothing after the artwork import. There used to be some
cleanup/consolidation/optimization tasks that would run and be reported
previously.

3) Many/most albums are not reported properly in the album list. They
are listed multiple times. Looking into the details some tracks seem to
be listed under the album and also again by themselves - leading to 2
album entries. These are single artist albums and do not have any known
non-ascii characters in anything.

4) Even though the MusicIP import reported almost the entire library
being pulled in (mixable only mode) no albums or tracks seem to be
mixable (no M anywhere).

5) I does seem like most of the artwork scanned correctly. Previous
versions had many, many covers missing.

Should some/all of these be added as bugs now? Is there any additional
logging that you would like to see first?

Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner changes in 7.4

Are the scanner changes complete so that we should just file bugs or
is it still undergoing overhaul?

I'm seeing, with the 27567 nightly build for Windows XP, a problem with
some albums ending up not together. Each track is listed as a seperate
album.

I also have some albums that are showing up under various artists when
it appears that both the album artist and track artist are the same
(Queen).

This was from a clear/full scan after a full wipe of the install.

What more information would be useful to help track them down?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Windows installer changes in tomorrow's build

2009-06-26 Thread dwilliams01

Widnows XP MCE SP3
Attempting to run SbS as a service with a named user account.

I need to use a named user id/password to reference the external NAS
that I have the music files on.

If I use the CP to set the server to start at system startup and enter
the user id and password, when I start SbS it creates the service but it
uses the system account. If I have previously set the SbS to start at
login (and started/stopped SbS) so that the service was deleted it
creates it as system. If it was previously setup (from starting it when
set to start at system startup) then the user id and password are
correctly setup in the windows service area (confirmed by
starting/stopping SbS) then starting the SbS from the control panel app
(with the user ID and password set and applied) it changes the service
to be a system service.

It is still taking about 1 minute for the CP to start up (actually for
the splash screen to start showing). Is there something that could be
logged to assist in diagnosing this issue, too?

Aggeed to the advanced user point - why I mentioned it. However,
there are 2 different kinds of advanced users - one who knows Squeeze*
products and one who knows Windows/other OS lines. Even the first time
I installed SlimServer I would have known that I would have wanted it to
run as a Windows Service. It doesn't matter too much as long as the
actual SbS process is not auto-started by the install. Then it just
gets in the way and makes things more complicated.

In fact, if the flow is:
1) final install screen with a checkbox to start the control panel
2) Hitting the Finish button with the checkbox checked.
3) Ending the install process and starting up the SbS CP process with
the initial screen (and probably the squeezetray.exe as well?).
4) Entering the basic information.
5) The full SbS CP screen comes up and allows the user to modify
settings.

At least I think that this is what I heard you state it was going to
do. The only suggestion I'd have with this is that I'd move the
initial screen to the first sheet/tab of the control panel and not
have 2 UIs/programs. The 2 programs is a bit complicated/confusing to
the user. They would never have to go to the other tabs since you can
start/stop from the first/basic screen so they shouldn't have to deal
with the complexity. Another thought would be to have an advanced
button if you still want to have 2 UIs but then I'd also always have 2
UIs - consistency is important.

On the music location - agreed that it is the Windows place to put them
but other things put stuff there so it isn't clean. Also, the
recommended location changes over time and I just plain have difficulty
in finding them. Look at how many recommended places there are
currently for downloads, too. Between public, current user, different
user, etc. I get lost. Plus I'm using a NAS for music storage
(something that will become more and more common, I think). It is a
great default, but quite often not used by a large percentage of
people.

On the UNC paths - In the SbS CP I could browse and pick the unc path.
I could save it and load it back up again in the SbS CP. However, the
actual SbS didn't see it and still was trying to use c:\... instead.
This was after several restarts of both SbS CP AND SbS. The only
conclusion that I could come to was that they were looking in different
places for the location.

I wasn't able to reproduce the multiple scanner issue this weekend - I
think that it was most likely a result of some of the other things going
on. When I do some new install and upgrade testing I'll keep an eye out
for them again.

Are the new naming conventions/changes finished being converted yet? I
had a lot of problems after the install. SC seemed to get into a memory
spiral and consumed all available RAM. It can't seem to connect to SN -
I get a Failed message dialog box. I had to key in my sn user id and
password again and then it didn't get to the main control panel screen
(even when it seemed to take the sn user id and password).

The uninstall program and the install program seemed to be running at
the same time (and doing things) - really seemed odd.

Also, the control panel was taking a very long time (about 1 minute) to
open up again.

I didn't have a chance to fully run through everything again and get
all of the details - a bit of a hurry this morning. I left SC
completely non-functional so I know I'll be revisiting it shortly.

Ahhh... Thanks for the explaination - that makes more sense, now.

It was probably the regular log file when it was growing. I never

kept freeing up space and it was instantly consumed so I couldn't
complete the update download. I think that I ended up having to reboot
to clean out some additional files and that is probably what stopped the
growing. My log file normally doesn't grow much. It is curently
sitting at 85K after about a day or so. I had to get rid of the file,
unfortunately. IF it ever happens again then I will make sure to save
it off somewhere so that I can break it up.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Control Panel (Windows) issues - please report

2009-06-06 Thread dwilliams01

Wow! What a difference with today's install. The CP came up (before
the install reached the finished screen, which is a bit unexpected).
I could navigate through it and it correctly displayed most of the
information properly. Most installs have a start application check
box on the finish screen to allow the user some control of that.

The only thing that it didn't have displayed after the install was the
library name. It was blank. Everything else, from music directories to
user account information displayed properly.

I entered the library name again and hit OK. It shut down instantly.
I was a bit worried that it had just crashed but it appeared to save the
library name properly and everything. It did not attempt to start up
another SC service, that I could tell, either.

Manually starting it up worked, although it does take quite a while to
start. I'd suggest a splash screen if you can't get that time down
quite a bit.

Overall, I'd say that this is going to be a very nice tool to use!!

By the way, have I mentioned lately that I really like the change made
to the install where the virus warning/approval doesn't show up all of
the time anymore? Very nice, too.

2009-06-05 Thread dwilliams01

Windows XP MCE sp3

Install finished without error. The last inch of the install progress
bar went by very quickly (much more quickly than usual).

The SC control panel did not start at the end of the install (that I
could tell).

SC appeared to be running normally after the install. With the proper
user, etc.

Manually starting the SC control panel did not work, either. It
started briefly (per the Windows Task Manger) and then shut down without
becomming visible or any message(s) on the screen.

It looks like the install kicked off a scan. The scan was running when
I was checking on the manual cp start. Could that be preventing the cp
from starting? Even if I kill off the scanner process the cp doesn't
appear to stay running.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Anyone try SC 26785 on Windows XP yet?

2009-06-01 Thread dwilliams01

Is that for the control panel app or the actual SC process? I haven't
been home to try the new build yet.

My understanding, could be outdated, is that the control panel isn't
finished yet so I've been holding off really putting it through its
paces. I always figured that there was some sort of timeout it was
waiting for before becomming visible/saving changes or something. I've
also had a couple of them try and come up at once (maybe the install is
attempting to start one or soemthing?). Before I was installing and
then rebooting to let the service (I run SC as a named account service)
do its thing. I'll have to reconfigure it once with the control panel
because I wiped the install this weekend.

By the way, since we are on the install topic. I REALLY like that
install doesn't get tripped up on the virus scanner check anymore. It
took several times without it popping up to allow it network access for
me to notice, but when I finally did it was very nice!!! Great Job!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Anyone try SC 26785 on Windows XP yet?

2009-05-31 Thread dwilliams01

Yes, I did - thanks!

I also noticed that it got downgraded from critical to major. Out
of curiousity, I wonder what it would take to get something rated
critical? Not starting is about as bad as I'd think it could get unless
there is room being left for things like completely wiping out hard
drives and systems, etc.

[SlimDevices: Beta] can't get friday and Saturday builds to even start

2009-05-30 Thread dwilliams01

On windows XP MCE sp3. No log files at all. Running as a service with
a named user or as just a process of the session.

Did an uninstall/reinstall and it also wouldn't start.

Reverting to a version from the middle of the week seems to have
worked.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Please help test nightly SqueezeCenter 7.3.1

2008-12-20 Thread dwilliams01

Downloaded the latest build of 7.3.1 and I've been using it all day.
Also downloaded squeezeplay and I've been using that as the controller
and Now Playing screen. The full screen mode on the PC really makes
the Now Playing readable from accross the room!!! Playing to an SB3
and boom.

There MIGHT have been something odd occur when I synchronized a boom to
the sb3. While the sb3 was playing I sync'd the boom to the sb3 from
the web ui while the boom was off. When I next used the web ui to turn
on the boom I think that it jumped tracks somehow. Maybe it resorted
them - I'm not sure. I wasn't able to duplicate it.

For SC:
Windows XP, sp3
Norton AV
External USB drive
Almost all Flac files.
Music IP integration (playing mixes)

For SqueezePlay
Windows Vista sp1
scrolling albums and artists, MusicIP mixing, now playing screen, and
changing settings

But, even as is, this is a great improvement. Thank you.

Of course I was always having trouble explaining to everyone to hit the

explaining it in the future. The normal reaction is to hit play and
the expected result is to add to the end (like a jukebox). At least,
in my opinion.

Agree that this is a great improvement and really thank everyone for it
too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Playlist Mode - Party Mode

2008-11-20 Thread dwilliams01

From my point of view this is a great change. Very difficult to get a
large number of people (more than 3) to NOT hit the play button.
However, with the proposed change the play button essentially buts the
song in line. This is not how a Jukebox works - you pick a song and it
adds to the end. I'd prefer it this way. Maybe this is the difference
between party and playlist mode - not sure on that.

Also, I wouldn't need it to automatically go into party? mode at all.
I could do that myself before the party and have it locked there until
I go in and cancel it. The automatic mode would be useful for me
setting up playlists so I could do something advanced like insert a
song next - not usually something that I do at a party but useful in
day-to-day activities.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.3 r3309 Issues

2008-11-10 Thread dwilliams01

That will be very useful when a party is going on! Pass the
controller is a favorite party game now except the rule about not
hitting play always took a lot of explaination.

I'd rather it be a settings option rather than a memorized key
combination. The main reson is that I don't want to memorize anything.
The other is that I don't need to turn it into party/jukebox/playlist
mode very often but I certainly wouldn't want it to accidently turn
itself off by someone holding a key down a bit long, etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Artistsort problems redux

2008-11-02 Thread dwilliams01

I think that there is another tag for sorting - something like
SortArtist, SortAlbum, etc. My unerstanding is that if those are set
then they are used instead of the regular Artist, album, etc. fields.

I use jaikoz to do tagging and it sets the sort* ones to last, first
while keeping the regular ones in the readable format (first last).

Perhaps some of your tracks have the sort* ones set and others don't.
This would explain the randomness you are seeing?

I don't use cue sheets.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Wow, SC 7.3-23767 did some funny stuff.

I see sort of the opposite.

If the controller is in the cradle with the screensaver running it
displays the cover art fine. I take it out of the cradle and move the
wheel the screensaver goes away and the now playing screen (where it
was sitting prior to the screensaver kicking in) is the placeholder
image. It fixes itself when the next song starts, though.
I'll file a bug on this case.

and 9000 forwarded. I remember setting up udp forwarding in my firewall
and the server side of ssh, but it was a while ago and the details are
no longer clear. I am using Bitvise Tunnelier as my ssh forwarder. Is
it just not possible to setup udp forwarding through ssh in general or
just difficult? I was pretty sure that there was a upd need back
with SoftSqueeze as well, but that worked. Odd.

I had installed the latest version available on the nightly when I
originally posted and didn't see any on screen controls - just a bigger
menu. I guess I was a few hours behind... Ill try harder to keep

I can use squeezeplay fine on my local network but I can't get it to
connect through an ssh redirect like I could softsqueeze.
Is this supposed to work yet?

Also, to me, all I see when the skin is changed to desktop is a
bigger footprint - no additional features or functionality. Others
keep mentioning how it is better on the desktop skin but I can't figure
out what additional benefits it would bring. Bigger is actually worse
for me, I like the smaller layout.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New preference default detection for language music source

2008-10-17 Thread dwilliams01

I see from a previous post that there is a way to set the default music
location in Windows. That has got to be one of the more secret options
(of a long list of secret options). I don't know anyone that knew that
(checked with 10 people that do music on Windows). Depending on that
setting to be set properly seems like a bad idea - from an ease of use
point of view. Could a prompt be put in somewhere (maybe the
installer??) to default to that folder and ask? It just seems rather
annoying to go through an install, then a scan, then have to find some
settings page somewhere, change that, and then clear and rescan. One
question up front and all your music is found and everything just
works.

FYI: 7 out of the 10 people I asked also didn't use the my music

- 5 people, 2 others just had it in a different place on C.

Should the controller be auto updating? I'm running 23612 SC 7.3 on

Manually starting up the software update (from the settings menu) says
that it will try and update to version ?

Yes, that's the current behaviour. If there's no iTunes or MusicIP, SC
will try to discover the music path, but let you confirm it.

Of course, I'd be one of the cases where I would have MIP installed but
NOT want to use it as the source of music, only mixable, so I'd want to
have the other directory specified in any case. Nice to know that
there is a prompt, though.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New preference default detection for language music source

2008-10-17 Thread dwilliams01

Philip Meyer;350657 Wrote:
It's no secret that in Windows you can change the location of any
special folder. All information is in the registry, but there are many
ways that the default Windows configuration can be changed, rather than
 edit the registry.

This includes Documents Settings, My Documents, My Music, Windows
 install folder, etc.

SC will simply get the underlying path that is pointed to by the
 special My Music folder.

I changed a lot of those paths in my PC. I think I initially changed
My Music to point to a different folder because of WMP or iTunes, which
insisted on writing to that folder (couldn't change one of those apps to
 write its files elsewhere).

WMP had a habbit of finding album artwork and modifying folder.jpg
files and making them hidden system files. This caused me to lose
better quality images with silly thumbnails from time to time.

So I changed My Music to point to another folder, and keep my real
music files on another hard disk partition, where I believe it is
safer. I configure all of my music apps to read from that path rather
 than rely on My Music.

I don't think I'm alone in this configuration - it's quite common for
users to keep their music outside of My Music.

Maybe not an official secret, but I would certainly not expect it to be
widely known and even less widely changed. I'd certainly expect more
people to have their music library where it is NOT pointing, anyway.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New preference default detection for language music source

2008-10-14 Thread dwilliams01

Most installs have a custom and express install modes. I'd suggest
that model. Although I have to admit I've never seen even an express
mode that didn't ask for directory names of where to install and I'd
think that the music library location would fall into that category as
well - seems pretty fundamental and straightforward a question, you can
default the answer, so worst case it is one extra click.

No, never thought of that kind of a check. Actually, when I did the
reinstall of a nightly that I had already installed (for the pause
issue) it hit the firewall check again even though I'm pretty sure that
I responded with allow always the first time anyway.

So, if there was a seperate .exe that was called by the installer and
did the actual checking it wouldn't have to change and the firewall
wouldn't ask every time, right?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Installer EXE naming, port checking, and firewalls

2008-10-11 Thread dwilliams01

I've noticed that the installer has a new name every time. I can think
of a lot of reasons why this would make things easier. However, there
is one downside - every time you install you have to go through the
firewall acceptance prompt again. It is a MINOR inconvience, but I
remote connect into my music server and if I forget to look back after
it has almost finished installing I end up leaving my system down and
the first person to try and play something gets a bit of a shock...

Any way that the installer could use the same exe name (at least the
part that is checking the ports)? Any way to skip the port checking?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Warning: Firmware: Failed to download...

2008-10-01 Thread dwilliams01

I think that it has been mentioned a few times before. The issue is
that there isn'ta 7.3 firmware version to download yet so, apparently,
no big deal. It is an annoying message, though. It has been proposed
to put the 7.2 firmware file in the 7.3 place until there is a
different 7.3 one available. Don't know why that hasn't been done
since it semms pretty simple and quick to do - perhaps because it would
mess up internal testing of a 7.3 one?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Please return My Radio to 7.3

2008-09-26 Thread dwilliams01

I like the idea of 2 levels. When you are trolling around station lists
you find some that are interesting but I wouldn't say that they were
your favorites. I wouldn't want to clutter up my favorites with them,
either. But there is no other place to put them. I wonder if the IE
usage of favorites could be the root issue. I'd like to have a
bookmarks and favorites area in browsers as well. Favorites are
things that I use often and want quick access to while bookmarks are
everything that I have found that I'd like to remember how to get back
to at some time.

Discovered Radio Stations may be clearer?? Then there could be 2
options, 1 to add to favorites and the other to add to the discovered
list.

It would be nice to be able to organize both areas with folder
concepts. Adding would just put them in at the top level for
simplicity but you could then move them around (perhaps with just the
web UI?).

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.3 New Streaming anomalies - again

2008-09-21 Thread dwilliams01

Running recent 7.3 build now. I'm getting some strange playback
behaviour.

I last saw this when the new streaming was introduced in the later part
of the 7.2 boom beta testing (when new streaming was added). I haven't
seen it since it was removed from the 7.2 beta...

Since it arrived and left with the new streaming I don't think that it
is either boom or my network related... I am using a late beta boom,
18v power supply, with a wireless connection.

Essentially, I get some odd things like:

1) While playing, display on the boom goes to the large clock which
is the off screen saver. Music continues to play for several seconds
after that and then stops (mid-song). No activity from remotes or
controller. The next track is not started.

2) While playing, display on the boom goes to the small clock screen
saver. This is the on, but not playing screen saver with the date on
the top line and the time on the second. Music continues to play for
several seconds after the display changes, as above, and then stops.
The next track is not started, as above.

3) While playing, display on the boom goes completely blank. The track
then stops playing mid-song and after a few seconds the display comes
back on again and the next track starts playing from the beginning.

I have only noticed this with the boom with a wireless connection. My
signal strength is around 70+ according to the info. display. I notice
no network drops from either the controller or my laptop when these
events occur.

Is anyone else seeing these sorts of events? What sort of logging
would be useful in further tracking this down?

Thanks

[SlimDevices: Beta] New MusicIP Scanning

2008-09-19 Thread dwilliams01

I've switched over to the new way to do scanning and MusicIP. Amazingly
faster and I really like it!!

Not sure that this is related but it has occurred a couple of times
now. I haven't been able to duplicate it at will so I thought that I'd
mention it to see if anyone had any insite on what logging to turn on,
etc.

I have SC doing the scanning and MIP just providing the mixable
info.

When it scans now some artwork is not loaded into SC. I get some
albums that do not get their artwork fully into the album list. I use
artist/album sort with max size artwork settings. If I click on the
album and drill into it I see the artwork just fine. After that going
back to the list and changing pages (and back again) I see it in the
list just fine. The albums are new albums and the artwork was present
prior to the initial scan of the album. I have seen this happen on a
full clear and rescan and with a net change scan.

Version 7.3 from yesterday but also occurred on older 7.3 versions as
well.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Mp3 Streaming Method

If this is the option I'm thinking of...

The reason for its existance, I would think, is to decrease bandwidth
requirements when connecting in remotely. I connect from work to my
home SC and use this to decrease the bandwidth so that I don't get any
choppy playback. The network connection can't seem to handle full
flac's requirements.

No idea if it is supposed to be limited to mp3, but I didn't have lame
setup once for SC and it didn't function (just streamed full flac).

A sure-fire cure for jumping into changes with both feet would be to
install both Windows XP sp3 and Vista sp1 (on 2 different boxes) in the
same week... I did that 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten everything
fully working again (although I can log into the vista box now,
yeah!!!). Granted that they were not betas but that doesn't make the
pill any less bitter.

It's harsh medicine, I agree, but I now might even be able to wait a
couple of weeks for the next MIP beta cut before trying it... :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] lame3.98b8

2008-05-08 Thread dwilliams01

Where did you get it (binary for Windows??)? I just realized, after
going on a trip, that I'd blown my version of lame away so I can't
remote connect and play music (it won't downshift the flac files
without it so it can't keep the buffer full over the internet). I just
started looking around for where to get it again when I saw this.

Workaround: Pause first, then power off. At least that has been
working for me.

Is the position of the splitter bar between the left/right sections
supposed to be retained between sessions? Mine, with safari on Windows
Vista, seems to reset back to the even position when it is launched
again. apr-26 build.

2008-04-26 Thread dwilliams01

If it helps, I tend to stick to one browser window size most of the
time. Keeping track of the left side size or something would probably
work pretty well for me. I think that it would be less of an issue
than having to resize the sides each time.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Main Menu Size Problem

I've also been noticing this more often recently as well. I always have
at least one player connected so that theory doesn't seem to be holding
up very well - at least for this case. Sorry.
Please let me know if you'd like me to turn on some extra logging
somewhere or some some specific cases.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Loosing settings when going from beta to GA

2008-03-07 Thread dwilliams01

I've been tracking when SC resets to default album sort order and
artwork because of some historical issues with it. It has been stable
throughout the later versions in beta. However, when going to one of
the last beta versions to the GA version it DID loose both the album
order and size settings. I'm figuring that this is most likely cause
by some sort of release numbering change from beta to GA, but just in
case I'm mentioning it here. If it really shouldn't have done that
then let me know and I will file an issue.

This is from a computer (Windows XP, running IE7) where SC is installed
and I ONLY go into SC when I install a new version, etc. I last
installed beta on the 23rd, installed GA today.

2/23/18 - installed nightly. Checked artwork/sort - OK. Full library
clear and rescan.
3/7/08 - installed GA release, checked artwork/sort - not OK, album
order reverted to default and size to small.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Loosing settings when going from beta to GA

2008-03-07 Thread dwilliams01

OK, I'll do some additional testing - I guess I was being too
optimistic...

No actions on that box - AT ALL - Logging in remotely, except stopping
the SC service, installing the new version of SC, then it pops up a
brower to SC and I go to the albums page.

OK, I'm probably an idiot. I didn't do anything with SC on the box, but
I did have a Symantic/Norton anti-virus update/scan occur yesterday.

Odds that it cleaned out some cookies? Sorry for the false alarm -
hopefully.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SC7 and MusicMixer (MusicIP) Qs

2008-03-01 Thread dwilliams01

Make sure that UPnP is turned off on at least one side (MIP or SC). In
SC it is in the Server/Advanced/Network page. I was told a while back
that they didn't play well together over upnp.

I also removed the music folder setting (just left it blank) from my SC
installation - it only knows about music that MusicIP has (via the
import). Speeds up the rescanning time.
