[Bibdesk-users] Smart capitalisation with BibDesk

2007-07-06 Thread François Briatte
Hello all,

I think the following feature would improve greatly the writing of
personal templates.

The current 'capitalizedString' template key capitalises every single
word in a strong, such as a title.

Example taken from my personal template:

>> Gerring, J. and Barresi, P. A. (2003) 'Putting Ordinary Language To
Work: A Min-Max Strategy Of Concept Formation In The Social Sciences',
Journal of Theoretical Politics, 15(2), 201-232.

I believe having a few exceptions -- not capitalising a list of words
like 'of', 'and', 'in', 'the'… -- would help a lot. EndNote 10 does
this AFAIK.

Ideally, exceptions would be accessible and therefore modifiable
inside an Application Support or Preferences file that would allow
adding exceptions from other languages.

What do you think? Is that very difficult to add?

I apologise if this function already exists.

Best wishes,
François

That's probably a good idea, as I don't know all the answers.
I'll CC the list.

Wow, version 0.7b in April 2002 is the earliest I can track down…

Actually, BSD. Some of the subprograms we package are licensed
differently, though.

There is a feature for networked sharing between Bibdesk users, but I
don't know much about it…

[Bibdesk-users] handling surname and numbers

2007-07-06 Thread Jason Davies
I have an author "C. R. Phillips III" who I want to cite. If I
protect the 'III' with 'Phillips' in BibDesk, then the reference
in the text appears as Phillips III (1986) instead of 'Phillips
1986'. But anything else I do messes up the entry in the Works
Cited section where I want the author's name to be C. R.
Phillips III. I looked up the treatment for 'jnr' but that gave
me no clues. Can I have my cake and eat it here? I'm not sure
how to even look this up in the documentation!

thanks.

In Terminal, what is the output of

ls -l /usr/texbin/bibtex && ls -l /usr/texbin/pdflatex

Make sure the paths in the Preview preference pane aren't red. It
looks like the TeX programs haven't even been run.

Did you try searching for "name" in the Help (I didn't...that's just a
guess)? See
. In this case, you have to use "von Last, Jr., First Middle", I
think, so "Phillips, III, C. R." should give you correct results.

that's a bit obvious, don't you think? :-) (I was being much

when I had finally worked out how to follow these difficult
instructions, it works as hoped.

damn, the syntax is almost like Applescript. Impossible to
guess, embarrassingly easy when you see it.

many thanks.

Why? It is quite standard name formatting. And moreover it's
unavoidable to use such a format in general, because it has to
uniquely define the components of the name, which First Middle von
Last Jr definitely does not.

No problem.

It's certainly unavoidable, but I always have to look at the comment
in BibAuthor.m for the correct order, since I only add a name with a
von or Jr part about once a year. It's easier for me to add names as
First Middle Last, so that's what I use in general.
