Re: [Bibdesk-users] preview of new file UI
Hallo Adam, I like the new UI for files a lot. Thank you for that work. One thing: What I like a lot about autofile is that it keeps your harddrive organised once you've thought about how you would like to organize everything. I read that it is not like that, but wouldn't one expect that a file that is dropped into your new window is aurofiled? Maybe the user could be asked if he wants the new file to be moved to the location that is defined as the autofile location. There could be a check-box to turn that behaviour of. Related to that: I have the impression that autofile is a powerful feature that is not used very often by many users? Couldn't BibDesk offer a standard setting like: Define as the autofile-location some place in ~Library for example ~Library/Application Support/BibDesk/ Autofiling/NAMEofBIBFile/CiteKeyOfEntry/CitekeyOfEntry.xyz. Of course more advanced users can do whatever they want, but for the beginner, it would be good to have a setup that just works and offers a lot of the features you discover only after a while. However, that is just an suggestion - Daniel - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. This is little more than a UI mockup to test the concept, and so the editor window isn't functional. My hope is that a revised editor window would help new users discover AutoFile and the other file-related features we have. It'll need some background text that says drop files here. I agree that enabling autofile by default is probably not safe. We could add a dialog that asks if the user wants to enable AutoFile when a file is dropped (with a checkbox to disable the dialog in future). I think a present problem is that new users have no idea you can drop a file on a form field, or maybe even on the toolbar button. Adam Perhaps only when it's empty? Exactly. I put up a new demo app at http://homepage.mac.com/amaxwell/.Public/FileViewTest.app.zip that has a first pass at this. It's not subtle. It also has drag-and-drop insert support, and key navigation with arrow keys. Rearranging objects will require a bit more work, but I think most of the UI bits are in place now. I also rewrote the datasource API and added bindings support this afternoon, so I'm curious to see if that's any more efficient with BibDesk's preview. -- adam - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges.
