Re: [Bibdesk-users] preview of new file UI

2007-09-09 Thread Daniel Becker
Hallo Adam,

I like the new UI for files a lot. Thank you for that work.

One thing: What I like a lot about autofile is that it keeps your
harddrive organised once you've thought about how you would like to
organize everything. I read that it is not like that, but wouldn't
one expect that a file that is dropped into your new window is
aurofiled? Maybe the user could be asked if he wants the new file to
be moved to the location that is defined as the autofile location.
There could be a check-box to turn that behaviour of.

Related to that: I have the impression that autofile is a powerful
feature that is not used very often by many users? Couldn't BibDesk
offer a standard setting like: Define as the autofile-location some
place in ~Library for example ~Library/Application Support/BibDesk/
Autofiling/NAMEofBIBFile/CiteKeyOfEntry/CitekeyOfEntry.xyz. Of course
more advanced users can do whatever they want, but for the beginner,
it would be good to have a setup that just works and offers a lot
of the features you discover only after a while.

However, that is just an suggestion -

Daniel

ok ok - the point is not where the autofile location is but to
educate new users to use autofile and give them the opportunity to
learn about it. Maybe ~/Documents/BibDeskAutoFiling/ with a small
Readme inside that explains how to change the location of that
folder. Or a folder relative to the bib-file named NameOfTheBibFile-
Folder. And it should be a one-click operation to turn autofiling on.

The default location is ~/Documents/Papers. though it will probably
not exist anyway. This kind of explanation is supposed to be put in
the Help, where it already is.

Personally, I am really happy how autofile works. But I grew up with
BibDesk and learnt about the features as they were invented. I guess
now new users have difficulties to imagine how powerful this fabulous
 application is

There are lots of features. The first thing a new user should do if
he wants to learn about using it is go to the Help. Otherwise there
is nothing from our side we should do.

I would say that a file dropped on the new UI in the detail editor
should be autofiled. It is like setting the Local-Url in the current
 situation.

Right, that's the plan as we discussed previously. This is little
more than a UI mockup to test the concept, and so the editor window
isn't functional.

My hope is that a revised editor window would help new users discover
AutoFile and the other file-related features we have. It'll need some
background text that says drop files here.

I was actually about to write a chapter about autofile (since it is
among my favorite features of BibDesk) for the wiki - providing
examples and screenshots. That I now delayed until the new features
Adam is working on are implemented. My hope is that having the
information in two different versions (help and wiki) will improve
people's awareness of autofile's power.

We may be able to make some features more obvious. I agree that
enabling autofile by default is probably not safe. We could add a
dialog that asks if the user wants to enable AutoFile when a file is
dropped (with a checkbox to disable the dialog in future).

I think a present problem is that new users have no idea you can drop
a file on a form field, or maybe even on the toolbar button.

The new features (if implemented) won't be available for some time, so
feel free to get started.

Exactly. I put up a new demo app at
http://homepage.mac.com/amaxwell/.Public/FileViewTest.app.zip
that has a first pass at this. It's not subtle.

It also has drag-and-drop insert support, and key navigation with
arrow keys. Rearranging objects will require a bit more work, but I
think most of the UI bits are in place now. I also rewrote the
datasource API and added bindings support this afternoon, so I'm
curious to see if that's any more efficient with BibDesk's preview.
