[Bibdesk-users] BibDesk crashes

2015-02-16 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Hi all

BibDesk crashes every time I try to create a new publication. It occurs with BD
1.6.3 (3444) (the last release) and the latest nightly build. I’m using OS
10.10.2 (14C109).

I understand deleting preferences doesn’t have the effects it once did—what’s
the alternative now.

It happens after after a restart as well.

Any insights?

Adam

Re: [Bibdesk-users] Release engineer

2014-12-04 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
You have to create an svn repository on your Mac with the BibDesk code, then,
when it's time for a release, compile the code using XCode, edit the release
notes, create a dmg on your desktop, upload the dmg to sourceforge, and then
send mail to the various mailing lists. Compiling using XCode is entirely
gui-driven, and the other stuff amounts to moving some files around and editing
text files.

As Christiaan says, there's a how-to document that's pretty clear. If you have
questions, you can ask the developer list.

When you think it's time for a release, check around on the user and developer
lists, to see if there are bugs, or work in progress that people want to finish
up before the release. If a bunch of new features have been added, a release is
probably a good idea.

I have had a hard time getting my machine to cache the svn credentials, for
reasons that appear to be totally particular to my machine. I have spent much
time troubleshooting, to no avail. I just upgraded to Yosemite, so I will
probably have to start from again on a new round of issues with that. Over the
December holidays, I'll have some time, so maybe I can figure it all out then.
If there were a few people who could go the release, we could get them out more
often, with less work for each of us.

I like doing the releases and I have learned a lot by doing them. I'm not much
of a coder, beyond awk scripting and some shell scripts, so it's not like I
bring a lot of expertise. The first time takes a while, and you might have to
stop and come back to it. But once everything is in place, you can do it in
around an hour, especially if you remember the steps from the last time.

In any case, if you or someone else reading this is inclined to give it a try,
please do!

[Bibdesk-users] Release engineer

2014-12-03 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Greetings all

Due to a new set of professional commitments, my time for engineering new
releases of BibDesk is sharply limited. I will chip in when I can, but it’s not
going to be very often—once or twice a year, looking at recent months. If there
is someone out there with access to sourceforge.net
who has some experience with Xcode, I hope that person will step forward.
Otherwise, it will fall to Christiaan, who has been shouldering much of the
load developing BibDesk.

Best

Adam

Re: [Bibdesk-users] importing PDFs

2014-09-26 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
There are some scripts for downloading PDF's from ArXiv, so maybe looking at
those will generate some ideas. I think the approach is to start an auto-file
operation. Maybe Hazel can run a script to create a new record with dummy
bibliography data and that then gives BD the appropriate auto-file location.

You can find the example scripts on the wiki, which I think you can get to from
the help menu in BD.

 Hi all,

Is there any way to import PDFs that don’t already have an entry in
BibDesk? The idea would be that, if the PDF has no metadata (or that
metadata is junk, which is usually the case, that this would just create a
blank entry with the PDF attached to it.

 Thanks,

Re: [Bibdesk-users] v1.6.1 crashes on 10.9

2013-11-14 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Apropos these comments, I wanted do a release last week, but my laptop had a
logic board failure.

Thoughts in whether I should proceed? I'm picking up the computer from the
repair shop today.

I had been using BD on mavericks with no problems at all for several weeks.

Related issue: are we still going to support Lion (10.7)? My 2006 laptop can't
be updated past Lion, so we'd lose people if we dropped it, I think.

What goes into that kind of decision? Support is dropped when the current
release is deemed too buggy to run on the OS in question? Then, what, the
previous release is listed as the last to support the OS?

Re: [Bibdesk-users] Release

2013-09-19 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
I'm having problems committing. I get an error:

Code/bibdesk-svn] zsh % svn commit --username=zcalifornianus -m "Building for
release."
svn: E175013: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: E175013: Access to '/p/bibdesk/svn/!svn/me' forbidden
[Code/bibdesk-svn] zsh % svn list
[z_californianus@shiftingbalance]

Kind of stumped about what to do. I am not sure if I have the right privileges?
My sf username is zcalifornianus

This was during the release process.

Re: [Bibdesk-users] Release

2013-09-13 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
I'm in the same position regarding when to release. I can start doing it again.
I think you have to be a little proactive and check with people on the
developer and users list.

[Bibdesk-users] Searching by key word

2013-03-11 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Hello all,

When the searching features were added, there was some discussion of what
fields ought to be searched from the drop-down toolbar-like met of menus. I had
suggested that keyword be one of those fields. I couldn't come up with a reason
why we should add this at the time, but now I have one. There are some words
and phrases that are used as keywords that are common, and appear in titles or
other fields frequently. Limiting the search to keyword would eliminate many
false positives.

Re: [Bibdesk-users] Citing Ancient Sources utilizing BibDesk

2013-03-02 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Well, that's a little more than most of us on the BibDesk users list can read
without drifting off...is there a specific example you can give us from one of
these kinds of sources?

The best place for this question is probably a BibTeX users list, because the
question is really about the style files.

You should probably check out biblatex because of the enthusiasm people have
for how easy it is to customize.

If you are looking for references you can export to Word or Pages, you can
design templates using BibDesk.

Unfortunately, I think I have mangled things so badly that I am going to have
to reattach all the files by hand. I will take a look at the Applescripting
possibilities. The PDF's are named using the cite keys as a basis, so it will
be pretty easy to connect the PDF with the record.

I suppose I couldn't just leave well enough alone!

I can second this. Many times I fill in the author field with editor's name,
generate the cite key and autofile name, and then delete the name in the author

I followed the steps above, or at least, tried my best. It didn't work. The
papers remained linked to the directory called Papers-1 wherever I moved it.
This, even after I deleted the preferences file, selected and re-selected
Papers. I created a disk image and put the Papers-1 directory on it, and then
ejected it, so it could no longer be found. Now none of the PDF's will link to
any folder, including Papers-1, no matter where I move it.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

I thought it would just look for files with the same names, in the directory
autofile was set to when they were filed. But, as you suggest, those files are
not the same as those the records originally pointed to.

So, I think this describes what I want to do.

0. Records are linked to files in Papers.
1. The Papers directory is committed (imported) into the repository.
2. A new directory called Papers-WC is created by checking out the Papers
directory. It has all and only files in the Papers directory.
3. Records point to the files in Papers-WC.

I hope this is more precise…any ideas?

Now I would like to create a working copy of the directory, and have the
records in my bibliography point to the papers in the repository. I am not sure
how to do this and I don't want to unlink all of my PDF's :)

I moved the Papers directory that was uploaded to the repository to Papers-old,
and then created a working copy called Papers. I figured that the references in
the records would point to the files in the working-copy-Papers directory,
which is identical to the initial directory. But the records all point to the
files in Papers-old. Not what I want.

I had the thought of selecting all of the records with attached files and
telling BibDesk to autofile them, but that ended up moving the linked files
into the new directory. I think a new file name was generated as well for the
moved file so as not to have the same one as the file already there. I thought
it would "re-lilnk" to the files in in the working-copy-Papers directory.

OK, I don't know if people can follows this. If so, any help would be
appreciated.

Gah. Data loss bug.

I am now on 10.8. Any advice about how to build with XCode would be
appreciated. Stick with 3.2? My impression is that support for 10.6 is now
being dropped.

I take it you have run LaTeX and BibTeX enough times. You say the other
citations appear as expected.

If you use the LaTeX preview window in BibDesk, what do you see?

Are there any messages in the TeXShop output window about unresolved references?

I'm not a TeXShop user, so I wonder, why is the cite key in bold print?

Have you tried just keyboarding in the cite key?

Create another new dummy reference and see if that works.

I don't know what auxiliary files TeXShop deletes, but what happens if you go
in manually and delete everything but your .tex file?

(Back up any files you think you might need by dragging them to the Desktop or
something else to get them out of the way.)

I think that this isn't a good compromise. People are going to lose work, or be
confused; someone might move a file around by accident, or forget that the
files shouldn't be moved, or forget to quit BibDesk. I think this isn't
something that we should put users at risk for. They will not appreciate being
told, well, we told you so, you should't have moved the file around.

Maybe this is a good place for a fork for the expert user for whom syncing is
really important.

There are other ways to sync, not from within an app, but using version control
of some kind, for instance, having your bib files in an svn repository.

[Bibdesk-users] Release of BibDesk 1.5.8

2012-04-14 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Greetings all,

The BibDesk development team is pleased to announce the release of BibDesk
1.5.8. Download the new release from the BibDesk home page at
http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/or, to download immediately, from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bibdesk/files/BibDesk/BibDesk-1.5.8/BibDesk-1.5.8.dmg/download.
From BibDesk, choose BibDesk > Check for updates, which will initiate download
of the new release.

We would like to thank the BibDesk and Mac-TeX users who continue to actively
support BibDesk development by reporting bugs and suggesting and testing new
features.

This is a bug fix release; the following changes have been made:
• Improved BibTeX parse error handling
• Fix MARC XML parsing for XML with additional attributes
• Avoid loss of file location that can happen due to Lion bug
• Ignore linked folders in export of BibTeX and Papers
• Broader support for Web of Knowledge

The problem I was having was that some of my apps (about half of them,
including BD) crashed immediately on opening. The combo installer fixed the
problem. For those using the combo, beware that "1 minute left" can mean more
like an hour.

Now all the apps work fine, including BD.

So, maybe the bug Adam noticed and the general 10.7.3 bug are different.

Re: [Bibdesk-users] beware of 10.7.3

2012-02-05 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Perhaps we should re-release when the bug fix is ready to go? I assume that the
one we're all talking about is the one that makes it so that some apps won't
open. Bibdesk is like that, the most recent release, at least.

[Bibdesk-users] Ignore earlier posting

2012-01-29 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Hello all

The posting I made earlier about problems with scrolling should be ignored. My
preferences file has been deteriorating, apparently, because BD would not
start, or else crash as soon as I tried to open a publication. (!!!) Trashing
the preferences file fixed all the problems and now scrolling is back to normal.

Best

Adam

[Bibdesk-users] Scrolling behavior in main table view

2012-01-29 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Greetings all

I am tinkering with a build of BD I created last night from source, doing my
own pre-release final sanity check. I noticed that I can scroll the main table
view past the first or last reference on the table. Eg, if I am organizing my
references by author, and there is an author whose last name is "Aaron" and so
is at the top of the list, I can keep scrolling upwards so that the Aaron
reference disappears under below the bottom border of the table. I cannot drag
the scroll bar past the top of the table, however.

The usual behavior on Lion is that it is possible to scroll upwards past the
top border of something like this, but there is a spring-loaded bounce, so that
there is a maximum height, at which someone can no longer scroll, and so that,
upon letting go of the mouse button, the table will bounce back down to its
highest level. Eg open a PDF in Skim and try to scroll upwards with the mouse
and let go.

Similar behavior occurs at the bottom of the table.

I take it that the behavior I report above is not the expected behavior.

I am using 10.7.2, 1.5.6 (2451). I have scrolling set to "Automatic depending
on input device."

[Bibdesk-users] Release

2012-01-25 Thread Dr. Adam M. Goldstein PhD MSLIS
Hi all

Judging by the absence of reports of problems on the users list, I take it that
there are no objections to a new release.

Right?

Regarding the preparation for the new release, could users of pre-Lion OS's
take a look at the source list color? I think Adam is referring to the gradient
of the background on the left pane with the keywords, etc.
