A Science Academies’ Refresher Course on ‘Advances in Biotechnology’
for graduate and postgraduate college/university teachers will be held
at the National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, Mumbai
for two weeks from 1 to 16 March 2011. The aim is to give the
participants a hands-on training on some modern biotechnological
techniques and the theory behind them. A variety of teaching methods
like lectures, discussion and laboratory work will facilitate the
learning process.

The course will help the participants to gain and sharpen their skills
on biotechnology. This training will provide them necessary knowledge
to boost their confidence in handling modern instruments used in the
field of life sciences and modern biotechnology. The skills gained
during this course will help them effectively fulfil their role as
better researchers and teachers
in teaching undergraduate/postgraduate students.

The course will consist of lectures everyday along with over five
hours of practical/demonstration/hands-on training.
Teachers who wish to participate in the Refresher Course may send
their application on plain paper (2–3 pages) with following details:
name, age, date of birth, sex, e-mail, official and residential
addresses, telephone and mobile numbers, academic qualifications
starting from B.Sc. onwards, teaching experience, courses taught,
position held and a statement indicating their reasons for interest in

Ten local and 10 outstation teachers will be selected. The outstation

to identify bioinformatics professionals. This will help potential
employers in recruitment of candidates having exceptionally good
bioinformatics skills.

Eligibility
Graduates and above in any science, agriculture, veterinary, medicine,
pharmacy, engineering and technology are eligible to appear for the
examination. They need not have any formal training, diploma
or certificate in bioinformatics. Application and syllabus

The online application can be filled from 13 December 2010 to 3
February 2011. Syllabus approved by National advisory committee is
available online. It consists of five sections: Bioinformatics,
Biology, Physical and Chemical Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics,
and IT.
Examination

The examination fee is Rs 600 for candidates from open category and Rs
450 for reserved category candidates (as per Government of India
rule). The examination is scheduled on 26–27 February 2011.

Apoptosis assays focus on nuclear staining, DNA ladder, western
blotting for expression of Bax, Bcl2 and CAD and FACS analysis.

Angiogenesis assays such as endothelial cell proliferation, tube
formation, migration, microvessel density counting,
immunohistochemistry, corneal micro pocket and shell-less CAM assays
will be covered.

Charaka Samhita describes Ayurveda as a progressive, dynamic and
inclusive science of life, which reviews, assimilates and utilizes
knowledge even from unfamiliar sources.

This inclusive and investigative spirit looks for improved
understanding of Ayurveda, and careful integration with biomedical
sciences. This requires very sensitive, complex trans-disciplinary
studies, because the
epistemology, principles, concepts and categories of the two knowledge
systems are different.

Such research will certainly improve communication across knowledge
systems and may well provide new path-breaking insights into both
knowledge systems. Integrative approaches in medicine are now gaining
global acceptance. Governments and universities in several different
countries have established centres for integrative medicine.

In India, such integration must be AYUSH centric, so that modern
science and technology are used to better understand theory and
practice of Indian Medical Heritage.

I-AIM is a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Ayurveda supported by the
Department of AYUSH. As a part of CoE initiatives, we are pleased to
announce a special opportunity for MD (Ayu) candidates who are
interested in pursuing trans-disciplinary research. Selected
candidates will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of
eminent biomedical scientists from leading research institutions.

Number of Ph.D. research fellowships: 12.

Consolidated fellowship amount: Rs 18,000/month + medical benefits.

Duration: 3 year full time residential programme at I-AIM, Bangalore.

Advantages: Ph.D. research fellowship and registration with recognized
university. Selected students will also be enrolled in I-AIM’s ‘Vaidya

Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, is a graduate and
Honorary Fellow of St John’s College. He is widely acknowledged as the
architect of the economic reforms that have helped propel India onto
the World Stage. In honour of Dr Singh St John’s College, the
University of Cambridge launched the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships in
Delhi in 2007. These awards will enable academically outstanding
Indian students to come to St. John’s College, University of Cambridge
to study for doctoral degrees in subjects like Science & Technology,
Economics and Social Sciences.

The applicant should be:

* The applicant should be:
* An Indian national with a valid Indian passport and currently ased
in India
* Below 35 years of age as on 31 December 2010
* Not already had significant exposure to UK education or received UK
government funding.
* Should hold a Master’s (postgraduate) degree from a reputed/
recognised India university/institution with a First Class award (UG
and PG) in the relevant subject/field
* Evidence of leadership qualities (to be assessed from personal
statements e.g. extracurricular activities and/or evidence of having

ACTREC’s Open Day 2010 has been scheduled for Thu. 2nd and Fri. 3rd
December 2010. Over this two day period, over 500 students accompanied
by their faculty from almost 40 science degree and medical colleges of
Mumbai and Navi Mumbai will visit ACTREC.

Posters on cancer awareness, prevention, research and treatment
strategies will be on display in the entrance lobby. At the start of
the visit, an Introductory Talk covering the thrust areas of basic and
clinical research on cancer at the Centre will be delivered to the
visitors. Batches of 12‐15 students and their teachers will be shown
around different PI labs/ facilities/ departments of the basic and
clinical research wings.

In CRI, scientists and Ph.D. scholars will give poster‐aided
demonstrations of latest techniques and protocols used in
biomedical research in cancer, vis a vis their on‐going research
projects. In the Clinical Research Centre (CRC), clinicians and
technologists will demonstrate high end equipment and facilities used
for cancer diagnosis and treatment.

{Biofriend} MIMANSA – 2011 : undergraduate level i nter-college science competition organized by Science Club, IISER Pune

[Bioexcellence India]

Mimamsa is an undergraduate level inter-college science competition
organized by Science Club, IISER Pune. This competition is different
from the regular science quizzes in that it does not seek to test the
factual knowledge of the participants. The aim of Mimamsa is to
challenge the participants to couple the knowledge of basic concepts
in science with analytical reasoning to arrive at the answers. In that
sense, Mimamsa is closer to the various science Olympiads, although
with some major differences in the skills being tested for.

Mimamsa explores the knowledge of students in the four disciplines of
science – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. There will be a
90-minutes long preliminary round for selecting teams from four
different colleges for participation in the finals (for more details
see Guidelines). The finals will be organized at IISER-Pune, and shall
stretch over >14 hours on two days. The winners shall receive the
Mimamsa Rolling Trophy. All finalists shall win exciting cash prizes
and mementos. All prelims participants will get Participation
Certificates at the venue.

The Preliminary round will take place at four centers at Pune, Mumbai,
Hyderabad & Nagpur.

organizations for the National training programme on ‘Metagenomics:
Method and Applications in Microbiology’ to be held from 11–20 January
2011.

The training programme is designed to provide an insight of
metagenomics. The training will improve skill of participants and
familiarize the participants to metagenomic approach to microbial
diversity and community analysis, designing of primers and validation,
cloning, screening and restriction analysis of metagenome, in silico
restriction analysis, multiple sequence alignment, sequence data
analysis, comparative genomics.

The training will bring scientists and research workers at a common
platform to exchange experiences and will be helpful in upgrading
research and teaching.

The training programme will consist of hands-on research experience,
training and exposure to cutting edge research.

faculty positions.  The primary interest of the centre is research on
the brain and brain-related disorders.   Current research focuses on
the areas of molecular/cellular, systems, cognitive and computational
neurosciences.Candidates with interests in the above areas and in
other multidisciplinary and novel approaches to the understanding of
the brain are encouraged to apply.

Appointments will be at the level of Assistant Professor and above.
Demonstrated record of independent scientific research in the form of
peer-reviewed publications is essential.   Level of appointment will

The Institute provides a significant start-up research grant to the
new faculty and will  provide partial support to cover relocation
expenses. In addition, the Institute provides certain perks to all the

conferences during a sliding period of three years, reimbursement of

A Refresher Course on ‘Modern biotechnological techniques’ for
graduate and postgraduate college/university teachers, will be held at
Manipal Life Sciences Centre, Manipal University, Manipal for a period
of two weeks from 10 to 22 January 2011.

The objective of this short-term Refresher Course is to give the
participants a hands-on training on some modern biotechnological
techniques and the theory behind them. A variety of teaching methods
like lectures, discussion and laboratory work shall facilitate the
learning process. The course will help the participants to gain and
sharpen their skills on biotechnology.

This training provides them necessary knowledge to boost their
confidence in handling modern instruments used in the field of life
sciences and modern biotechnology. The skills gained during this
workshop will effectively fulfill their role as better researchers and
teachers in teaching undergraduate/postgraduate students.

The course will consist of a lecture everyday and over 6 hours of
practical/demonstration/hands-on training. Teachers who wish to
participate in the Refresher Course may send their application on
plain paper with following details: name, age, date of birth, sex, e-
mail, official and residential address, telephone and mobile numbers,
academic qualifications starting from B.Sc. onwards, teaching
experience,course taught, position held and a statement indicating
their reason for interest in participating in the course and their

The International Conference on “Emerging Frontiers and Challenges in
HIV/AIDS Research” aims to provide an interactive forum to the
researchers who have been engaged in addressing the cutting edge
researchable issues such as mode and mechanism of HIV infection and
transmission; resistance to the pathogen as well as anti-HIV drugs;
disease progression; and development of efficacious strategies for
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS.

The meeting will dwell on the key roadblocks to translational research
in the field of HIV/AIDS which includes inconclusive knowledge of the
basic mechanism of HIV pathogenesis, nature of the cellular and
anatomical reserviores of virus infection, limitation of non human
primate models and lack of consensus in the appropriate models for
vaccine research and product testing. Special sessions on the
policymaking and advocacy for the programmes on control and management
of HIV/AIDS will be the other highlights of this international meet.
This meeting is expected to create an excellent convergence of the
perspectives of those with specific interests in fundamental, clinical
and sociobehavioural research on HIV/AIDS. We earnestly hope that the
deliberations during the conference will help in translating
theoretical advances into the clinical practices and contribute
towards deaccelerating the pace of this pandemic.


The scientific programme will include plenary lectures, lectures from
invited speakers and oral /poster sessions covering the following
major themes

Socio-behavioral Research
