[Ontbirds]Presqu'ile migrants

2007-05-23 Thread Doug McRae

Hello Ontbirders,

I was birding Owen Pt. at Presqu'ile Prov. Park from 0600-0800 this
morning and saw some migrants of interest, including some 237
shorebirds of 9 species.

Shorebirds included 2 B-b Plover, 18 Semi Plover, 4 Killdeer (local
breeders), 1 Whimbrel, 5 Ruddy Turnstone, 1 Red Knot, 2 Semi
Sandpiper, 17 Least Sandpiper, 187 Dunlin. Virtually all shorebirds
were on the gravel bar between Owen Pt. and Gull Island - some
resting and some feeding on items off the gravel surface (midges?).
The Whimbrel flew over calling and circling a few times but continued
NNW over Popham Bay. A number of the Dunlin kept flying off NNW in
tight balls only to return a few minutes later, a behaviour that
usually means they won't be staying long. Only about 25 shorebirds
were on the main raked beach (mostly Semi Plovers at or near the
shoreline), which is not surprising since all the traditional
ephemeral spring feeding ponds that were so critical for the
traditional large groundings we used to get here have have been
systematically drained and filled in by Ontario Parks/MNR over the
past five years.

Other birds of note included a single Brant on the same gravel bar, 2
singing Willow Flycatchers along the Owen Pt. trail, 2 Lesser Scaup,
1 L-t Duck, and 3 Redhead - all in Popham Bay. While I didn't have
time to do much warbler watching, a number of spp. could be heard
including a Mourning near the Park Store and many Wilson's singing
everywhere.

Cheers,

Doug McRae

[Ontbirds]Massive movement of Whimbrels in southern Etobicoke

2007-05-23 Thread Wayne Renaud
Between 5:30 and 11:30 a.m. Whimbrel counts totalled 2542 at Colonel Sam
Smith Park and 350 at Marie Curtis Park [TOTAL = 2892]. Richard Joos
arrived early (around 5:30 am) with myself, Jean Irons and a host of others
arrive between 6:20 and 7:00 am were on watch until 10:30 am. A flock of
350 was flying nw over the mouth of Etobicoke Creek/Marie Curtis Park at
11:30 am. Similar to yesterday, large numbers were passing far offshore,
others coming closer, often circling sometimes for 30 minutes and then
continuing migrating west or northwest. I would very much encourage others
who see flocks of whimbrels this afternoon or evening to report them to
ontbirds to get an accurate total day count.

Directions:
Kipling runs directly into Colonel Sam Smith Park and adjacent Humber
College Lakeshore campus, located west of Islington and east of Brown's Line
south of the Q.E.W.

[Ontbirds]Sedge Wren - Long Point Provincial Park

2007-05-23 Thread Mike Boyd

Dear Fellow Birders,
This morning I found a Sedge Wren singing in Long Point Provincial Park at
the 'traditional' location for them here. I originally found him singing
around 6:10am and was last heard around 10:40am. A Least Bittern was also
heard here this morning.
The Bird Studies Canada ponds have also been good lately with a White-rumped
Sandpiper yesterday and a Wilson's Phalarope the day before.
Directions:
Exit the 401 at Hwy 59 near Woodstock and follow it south down to Lake Erie.
The BSC ponds are just east of the intersection with Front Rd, before you
cross the causeway. The provincial park is at the end of Hwy 59. Once you
are in the park follow the road as it winds along the marsh past the boat
launch. On the north side of the road there will be two large ponds that
have a grass path mowed around them, the bird was singing in the grassy
field to the east of these ponds.

Further to Wayne Renaud's report, while on my way to Toronto this morning at
9:20 a.m., I stopped in at Saddington Park
located at the end of Mississauga Road. As I walked out the east side of the
park I viewed a flock of 175 - 200
Whimbrel circling out on the lake. I watched this awesome phenomenon for about
20 minutes. At one point the whole
flock circled over my head at a close distance and the noise they made was
considerable. The flock then moved west and
overland from there.

Directions to Saddington Park:

QEW to Mississauga Road, south on Missauga Road to the lake.

At lunch time today, there was a Grey-cheeked Thrush in the woodlot
north-west of Tunney's Pasture and south-west of the Champlain bridge.
It allowed excellent and prolonged views, which is certainly not always
the case with this species. There was also a singing Canada Warbler, but
apparently few other migrants.

Directions: The woodlot is south-east of the Ottawa River Parkway/Island
Park intersection. I suggest parking on one of the residential streets
such as Carleton (but be aware of parking restrictions). At its north
end, Carleton turns into a paved path that goes down to the river. Take
only a few paces on the

[Ontbirds]Eastern Ontario: Marbled Godwit migrants

2007-05-23 Thread Bruce Di Labio

Hi Everyone,
Spent the day birding various areas in eastern Ontario. At St. Isidore
Sewage Lagoon the Marbled Godwit was still present feeding in the south-west
cell. There was also a good number of Semipalmated Plover 150+. The Alfred
Sewage Lagoon had an interesting variety of waterfowl including 75+ Ruddy
Duck, 1 Snow Goose and 9 Redhead. Both Casselman and Embrun Sewage Lagoons
had very few birds. At the Mer Bleue 2 Yellow Palm Warblers were observed
along the boardwalk along with a few Lincoln's Sparrows. This location has
had Yellow Palm Warbler for the past 3 years.
The Red-headed Woodpeckers were present this afternoon at the Old Burn
Site at Constance Bay. Three adults were observed calling and flycatching.
A total of 11 species of sparrows were observed including a late
White-crowned Sparrow.

   good birding
   Bruce
Directions: Marbled Godwit: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 east to exit #51 and
go north. At St-Isidore turn left on Cty Rd. 3. Continue west to Bourgon Rd
and turn right.
The lagoons are at the end of this road. These lagoons as others in Eastern
Ontario are on private property but birders have been tolerated for a number
of decades!

Directions: Red-headed Wdpk: From Ottawa travel west bound on Hwy. 417 to
the March Rd./Eagleson Road and exit right onto March Rd. Follow to Dunrobin
Road and turn right continuing northwest through Woodlawn. At the hill
turn right onto Constance Bay Rd following it for approx. 1.5 km. Turn left
on Allbirch

Road and drive 1.3 km to the T intersection. Turn left on Bishop Davis
Drive and then right on Bayview Drive. Follow Bayview Drive to Ritchie St.
Turn right and go a short distance to Whistler Rd. Turn left and drive .3 km
and watch for a gate on the right. The trail through the burn area is
opposite the gate. Parking is limited. The old burn area is on your left.
There is an abundance of Poison Ivy in the burn area. It is recommended to
stay on the trails.
If you require additional information , please email me privately.

eating dandelion heads.

Take Hwy 417 west from Ottawa, exit north at Carp Road. Go north to
Richardson Side Rd and turn left. Down Richardson to Pine Ridge and turn right
onto Pine Ridge.
